I had been visiting a friend who lives in this neighborhood and when I was heading home I stopped off at this store to get a bottle of water. This is an independently owned convenience store and not part of a chain. It is a nice store and it is very professionally run. I saw some things that I don't ordinarily find in convenience stores such as some small bronze statues of Indian gods as well as plates and drinking glasses, Indian groceries and some Indian bath products and facial cleansers. I decided just to try something different I would buy one of the facial cleansers in addition to the water that I had already planned to buy. They also had plenty of what an average convenience store has such as chips, bottled beverages, candy and so forth. When I got to the cash register to pay for my items I saw some candy bars nicely displayed right at the register so I grabbed a candy bar for the trip home. The man working the counter was very pleasant and welcoming. He gave me some good information on the cleanser that I was buying without me even asking which I really appreciated. He seemed to be very familiar with the items that this store sells and was very knowledgeable. He was a pleasure to deal with. The store was well stocked with plenty of product and the products were arranged very nicely on the shelves. Next time I am in the neighborhood I will definitely be stopping in here again. read more

They don't let you try on their gloves and hat to see if you want to purchase. Tell me how do you expect to know if the gloves and hat will fit you If you can't try them on first? I could have bought and returned right there in the store just to spite but instead I decided to let everyone know they shouldn't buy anything here that's requiring you to open it first. read more

First of all, the "fresh" produce is anything but fresh. Most times I go into the store, most of the veggies are wilted, wrinkly, and on the verge of rotting. I once tried to buy a gallon of milk there only to discover that it was a month expired. From what I have experienced, it's a big scratch ticket place. I guess lots of people have won with tickets there. Not my thing, but I must say that the cashier will straight out ask you for a little sumthin' sumthin' for him. A tip. He's asking for a tip out of your cash payout. I witnessed it firsthand when this poor Hispanic dude who seemed very inexperienced won $500 and before the cashier paid him, he muttered something about a tip under his breath. The customer did not understand, but at the end, the cashier asked again, and eventually received $20 in "tip". All the while, I just want to buy a ginger ale and he told me to wait when I just asked the price so I can pay and leave. Yeah, that did it. I'd been waiting patiently, witnessing this extortion take place and eventually couldn't take any more of this absurdity. I guess this place makes money off of lottery and scratch tickets and the money they scam out of the winners. Don't go there if you actually want to buy anything fresh or legitimate. read more

Allston Market is my secret place to stock up on Soya Vadi and almost anything Indian that I can think of -- dal, spices, roti, it's here. I must recommend the soya vadi to vegetarians -- if you haven't had it before, it's quite tasty. Sort of like huge TVP chunks. I used to get something similar at the old Super 88 on Herald but haven't been able to find it at the Asian grocers lately. Luckily vadi does the trick. Plus, the woman working the register last Saturday was really nice. Always a bonus. read more

Stay away!!! I was very happy to find an Indian store in the neighborhood, and I bought a ton of frozen food (mostly of the brand that I really like and that usually cannot be found in supermarkets). Unfortunately, almost all of it was long expired! In fact, two of the seven packages I bought had MOLD in it!!! Yes, mold. Like a huge white stain of cotton-like mold, and, in another package, several yucky black stains mold. I almost threw up. The rest of food also tasted sour or smelled funny, or looked suspicious at best. I also noticed that not a single item had an expiration date printed, and then I remembered that the refrigerator did not seem very cool at all. The place deserves a good Health Department inspection. If you go there, buy spices or canned food, but avoid anything that can perish, because it probably had. This is an amazing store - full of hidden treasures and groceries and supplies you may not be able to find anywhere else, just have take your time to look through it. Also the owner is very honest and nice, I love giving my business to kind and honest people and mom and pop shops in the area. Good stuff! read more

I bought a bottle of dish cleaning detergent. The nozzle won't come off, realized it was resealed. The detergent it contained was half as thick as it normally is. I guess they made two bottles out of one. Both bottles comprising half detergent - half water. This place is a rip off. Stay away from this place. read more

I don't often write reviews but after today I must share my story. I have been going to allston market almost every day for about a year and a half now. I have lived all over the country, have been to so many different corner stores and I have never felt as welcomed as I do at Allston market. They have treated me like a true neighbor and friend and have helped me many times. Today I went in like any other day to get cat food and what not when I accidentally left an envelope with my rent check on the counter. I get home and realize I do not have it. I start panicking searching every where and realize I might have left it at the store. I go back and the owner immediately looks through the videos to see if I may have left it and what might have happened to it. He sees another customer take the envelope on the video. He finds out who the guy is and goes through alot of trouble to contact him to return the envelope. He took a lot of time out of his night to track it down for me and really saved me from a very hard time. This is only one story out of many times they have helped me and my fellow neighbors. I have zero doubt if this happened at any of the other stores around here (Tedechies, CVS) I would have gotten such special treatment. I feel honored to be a customer at this store. This is a big reminder of how important mom and pop stores can be to a neighborhood and Allston market will always have my business. read more

Horrible business. I bought an e cigarette here (for $50!), it didn't work . Tried to get an exchange or refund for the product, the manager blamed me and said I broke it and it was my fault. When he sold it, he claimed there was a lifetime guarantee, such and such. But, now that it doesn't work, won't exchange or refund. Horrible business, said it's not his business that I don't know how to use it. I asked him for the owner's number, he gave me a false name and number! What the hell, such a jerk and dishonest way to do business! Unbelievable. Do not support their store! Please, these people should be taken to court for dishonest business.
