This is a great store, with lots of less-common items that my family likes to eat. However, my review today is about one cashier. I go there often, and EVERYONE there has been GREAT...except for this kid. I checked out my groceries around 11:45am today, 6/5/22. She didn't have a name tag on, so i will describe her: teenager, straight hair with lighter dyed front parts of her hair and multiple nose piercings. The person in front of me was an older lady, and after she cashed out, the lady had to ask the cashier to help bag her groceries. The cashier reluctantly started helping, but filled one bag with what looked like 20 cans, before the older lady asked her to not make the bags so heavy. The cashier let the older lady do most of the work. When it was my turn, a bagger appeared, Mohammed, and he was awesome. The cashier didn't say a word to him or to me the whole time, even though we both said hi to her. Then, the cashier started bagging some of my stuff, and actually put heavy boxes of drinks on top of chips. Mohammed did most of the work, excellently. After mashing multiple bags of chips, the cashier turned and sat in the thing that holds plastic bags. I have been a teacher for a long time, mostly at the high school level, and I have tremendous patience with teenagers. However, this girl does not (yet) have the maturity to work a job where she interacts with customers. Please do everyone a favor, and give her hours to one of the many hard-working employees at that store. read more

Great Star market location and a combined pharmacy in the store. Nice section of groceries and some prepared foods. The self checkout lines help to make getting in and out of the store a breeze. Ample parking in a neighborhood where parking is a little tight. read more

On top of other poor encounters with shoppers and staff, noted below, Today 11/19, my car was scratched in the very front parking spot, less than 20 minutes of going in for coffee. Other Experiences: Food = Ok, watch dates on all items. Shelf life not always as posted on the products. Service = Mediocre at best, every associate always looks angry, unapproachable. I love coming here for the abundant parking. It can sometimes be more expensive but I use the app for coupons and there are always a ton of deals. The app also lists the aisle/location of any product if you're having a hard time finding it. It has been a long time since I have been at this location (at least 6 or 7 years) but I was nearby yesterday and ran in for yogurt; I left with $40 worth of groceries. While some of the characters outside might be interesting (there is always something happening at this plaza, yesterday it was a bunch of guys yelling at each other about something), parking is plentiful and you can park far away from the store if you don't want anyone just pulling in quickly and banging your car. Best thing about this location is how much space there is between the registers and the aisles themselves: many stores - not just Star/Shaw but the others - have just a few feet of space and trying to get through is tough even without a cart. Not here, lots of room to move around whether you are going aisle to aisle of heading to checkout (or just do self checkout, it is quick). read more

I went in specifically looking for sardines. I could not find what I was looking for but happened to pass a man that worked for Star Market. He was more than helpful pointing out that for some reason sardines were split into two locations on the same aisle. Go figure. I would never have figured that out on my own. I had to be impressed with the customer service. I did not find the brand I was looking for but there were a number of options available to me. The store looked like it had been updated. I noticed that they now had 5 self-service registers at check-out. The store was clean. This location is rather pricey. I prefer to shop at Trader Joes or Shop and Stop but I figured I would give Star Market a shot. All in all, if I needed something, in the future, I would return to Star Market because of their selection and customer service despite the prices. read more

Not sure when they renovated but it is sooo much better now. When I first moved to the area about 4 years ago, it was a horrible excuse for a supermarket and I never went back. Last summer I stopped in here to grab a couple things since I didn't want to drive far and I was impressed with the selection! They have a wide selection of produce that is fresh, a decent organic section and the shelves are well stocked (as well stocked as a grocery store can be right now). They also have prepared foods like pizza, chicken wings etc. the store is pretty clean except sometimes the self checkout stations get a little gross and they aren't wiping them down at all throughout the day. Now I shop here pretty regularly for groceries instead of trekking to Trader Joe's or Wholefoods. read more

The sign may say Star market but it is a Shaws. They have lots of hot foods for lunch time meals from sushi to hot soups and sandwiches. I enjoy the salad and olive bar too. The have a florist to pick up flowers or balloons and the staff are very pleasant and nice. It is clean and organized. I stick to buying the items on sale. read more

I went to the star market at Western ave Brighton on Sept 5,2022 at 8:50am to purchase a bag of shrimp at the self checkout register. I pay for the shrimp & 5 cents for the bag as well. The person work there jump out accusing me not paying for the bag. The words coming out from her mouth is full of discrimination and unprofessional manner, making me feel so uncomfortable & insulting. I'm not deserving that kind of attitude. This 5 cents I PAY can prove she is an uneducated person. Very BAD experience at this location compares with your competitors. Service need improvement. read more

I live within a 5 minute walk from this place. This is the only reason I even shop here. I never do a full grocery run because their prices are higher than Stop & Shop and their selection is sub par. The meat is usually close to the expiration date. The deli counter usually doesn't cut the meat and cheese thick enough so it's impossible to pull apart. The dry goods frequently have dust on them. I have also found countless items past their expiration date including gluten free crackers and medicine in the pharmacy section. There is never less than 3 people in line at the 10 items or less lane. Yet there are 2 registers. There are usually 2-3 regular registers open. You should SEE this place on the weekends. There are so many people in line they're blocking the pathway to the rest of the aisles. They don't open additional lanes yet they have people sampling food and the managers are re-organizing displays. Usually you have to bag your own food. The management here needs to look at their priorities. read more

I visited the Star Market on Western Avenue in Brighton tonight around 6 PM and the cashier's name who scanned my items is Edwin. I went to the register and there was a woman in front of me who only had two items on the conveyor belt. He scanned hers and started scanning the items that I had placed on the conveyor belt. She said "those aren't mine". He said " You two aren't together?". She responded "no", then he said to me "register #8 is open". I said "most of my things are already on the conveyor, so I'll stay here". He scanned my 47 items and after I paid, he didn't help me bag any of the items. I had my own bags and while I was bagging he had the audacity to check his phone. Another person arrived and he rang up her items as they piled up with my remaining items. He then bagged her items since they were mixing with mine. I can't believe he didn't offer to help me bag my items! Can we do less than 1 star. I would if I could. First of all, the prices are higher here than other locations. They think the neighborhood has Harvard money. Employees: hike.except for a few, (Franz, Mohammad, ashwani, Nidea,) are horrible.Jay, manager, is miserable. He hates his job, customers and fellow employees. This five star is for their great bakery department. They tempt you with some kind of sample by their counter, then you are hooked. They had sugar cookie out today, I don't care for sugar cookie, it looked so pretty with all the fancy frosting that I had to try it and ended up eating the whole cookie! Got this cinnamon chip muffin from them. I had never seen this in any other location. Another muffin that's absolutely awesome. The grocery store is good but it's really the bakery that draws me to star markets. . read more

I hate everything about this grocery store. Even after the recent renovation, the produce section is terrible. Certain items are only sold organic (and I'm talking staple items like parsley). You can't get lettuce that isn't brown around the edges. You literally need to open the packages of herbs or berries to check that the bottom pieces aren't already moldy. It'd be one thing if questionable items were priced down for quick sale, but the prices aren't even competitive. I got so frustrated with the poor quality yesterday I just gave up and went to Whole Foods, where I got all the produce I needed for cheaper than Star Market had them marked. To me, stopping at a Star Market is always unique because I don't live close enough to any to justify the trip just to shop at one and I have fond memories of them as a kid (before they rebranded in my area to Shaw's). I was surprised to see a low overall rating for this location as I really liked it. I found it clean, the aisles were clear, the displays looked nice and they had a wide variety of take home foods. I ended up buying my birthday "cake" (which was just a gooey delicious slice of triple chocolate cake) here and also found some great prices on cat food and brisket. Yes, my trip to find a birthday cake had me come away with a brisket, cat food, bacon and a slice of cake. And it was well worth it. Prices are a little high, although I attribute that to prices in general having gone up and it being the Boston area where everything is higher than closer to home. My one issue was the self scanning where no one was monitoring and it was very sensitive to things ringing twice so we had to wait to get help. Maybe because it was evening and quieter so no one was actively monitoring, who knows. Anyway, I'm always happy to stop at a Star Market. If you're in the mood for Afghani food there is a wonderful place (Ariana Restaurant) located basically across the street that I also totally recommend. read more

Why do I bother getting more then a few items here!? It is just not worth getting all my groceries here, if is spend $100 or $300 at groceries rush hour 4 to 7 there is never anyone to bag my groceries. Or there is one manager just helping out. Plus, half the time people are on break and the lines a 4 deep. The help is friendly and compliant enough, but the Star on Mt Auburn in Cambridge has extra baggies and cashiers for rush hour. I'd rather pay a little mor at Trader Joe's or my local and get service and a smile, not the Sad Sack this place hires. read more

For the record, today Shaw's/Star/We change our name every 3 hours was out of: 1.) Entenmann's Marble Cake. What is so hard about stocking this lovely treat? It is my Papa's favorite. I returned home, defeated with a crappy bakery made banana loaf. Not good. You did have roughly 42 boxes of crappy looking donuts and 1 box of pound cake. But, NO MARBLE?! What the Eff. 2.) My favorite Orville Redenbacher Microwave Salt and Cracked Pepper popcorn was on sale today! YESSS! For shits and giggles, I decided to live luxuriously and pick up TWO boxes. I get home and methodically check the expiration date, like I always do. Dec 2008. Thanks, fuckers! I'll be seeing you tomorrow so I can get a box that is not EXPIRED. 3.) Oh sweet delicious black plums. Spring is here. The plums are not. You had them for the past two weeks. Now, you have old, wrinkly black plums that basically resemble old balls. And, for the record, there were about four of these "plums". You might think they are doing a science experiment to see how long it will take for people to not buy the plum, because next week they will be on sale. Only, they will be called Prunes. 4.) The checkout girl who could not crack a smile, or give me any eye contact when I said "hello", no, she was too busy chatting with her co-worker. 5.) Right now at star market, you can SHOP to CHOP! Earn stamps for fun cuisinaire utensils, like chopping knives. Woot woot! 1 stamp for every $10. I already earned the kitchen scissors! Nice and sharp. Plus, this particular grocery store, though smaller than some, is VERY clean and I've never seen it very busy. You can pick up a bagel and a coffee to kick off your ventures in shopping and weave your way through produce, deli, bakery, Italian, organics, shop-the-world, condiments, grab your meats, head down granola bars, cereal, get some paper goods and the bad candy/salty things, bacon, creamers, frozen dinners, milk, oj, bread, yogurt, cheese, eggs, and swing around for baby needs... Yes, in that order because I've memorized the layout for the shop. Woot! If you want fresh pizza dough, it's actually near produce/flowers and the deli. Good stuff. read more

According to me, this is the best supermarket in Boston to buy day-old donuts. And, according to my admittedly skewed priorities, that's worth at least four stars. For 75 cents, you get three day-olds shoved unceremoniously into a plastic sack. I make a beeline for anything which chocolate frosting, because that stuff inexplicably gets exponentially more delicious the more time it spends smearing around and fermenting in a cheap plastic bag. The day-old bakery rack is in the back of the store, against the wall between the seafood and the deli meats. They take it down at 4 p.m., but the pickin's are pretty slim at that point anyway. Also, unlike the other baked goods, the day-old donuts have the sort of label that rings up correctly at self checkout. So that's good for antisocial donut lovers, I guess. read more

Blurg. I go to this Shaws because I can walk there, and then give myself a pat on the back for walking. But honestly, I get aggravated most times I go there. The frozen section has a super limited selection, and they never EVER have fresh basil when I go. The produce is ok, but can be super grimey. The lines are always UBER long because the cashiers are mostly awful, so you can't ask questions or confuse them, or you'll end up spending about 45 min more in the store. I'd say use the self-checkout, but half the time people don't know how to use them and end up staring at the blinking light like, DUR? What's going on? The best part about this store is the Liquor store. The lady who works in there is super sweet and always gives good wine suggestions. They don't have much selection, but they have all your essentials. read more

Like the other two people who have reviewed before me I go to this particular Shaw's because it's walking distance from my house (and I don't drive). I also like it because it's a Shaw's/Osco/Liquor store all in one. I don't do a ton of food shopping because I never know how many nights I'm staying at my apartment so I'm usually only running in for a couple things. They've always had what I was looking for and I've never run into any major problems. It's never been super crowded and I usually use the self check out so I don't have to deal with any a-hole cashiers. I have no earthly idea why they are out of iceberg lettuce. It's lettuce. They should have it in spades. Also, they never have stand-n-stuff taco shells. It's like they order one box a week and when it's out, everyone is forced to buy the whole damn stand-n-stuff dinner kit. It's insanity. Their green peppers are NEVER fresh, and there are usually four of them. This is my main grocery store and it makes my heart yearn for a freaking Wegmans here in Boston. I know I should really be asking much of Shaw's, but jesus christ would it kill them to have fresh produce at 5:30pm on a weekday?! Really? Or meat? They are usually almost completely out of ground beef or good cuts of chicken that aren't in the family packs. I don't understand this, and it's typical of any grocery store that I've ever been to. They also got rid of one of their two types of pizza dough, keeping the more expensive one. I make my own dough now but it's still annoying when I'm in pinch and need to pay extra because they changed things around. I fear change, damnit! One good thing is that they do have a beer and wine shop inside the store. And the people that work here are wicked nice. Parking is always easy and ample at this Shaw's. read more

I just had a very unpleasant encounter with the checkout clerk. I pointed out to him that the discount sticker should be applied to the lowest price that was on the item, but he kept on saying I was wrong and that he's right because he's been there forever. Instead of holding up the line over one item, I said I will decline in buying the item and I started walking away. As I was walking away, he just started to insult me. I've been going to this star market for roughly a decade, and I've never had such a bad encounter until now. read more

I have been using this supermarket a lot as a student at HBS and I am fairly impressed with its pricing and selection. The service is good too. I was once looking for this pizza dough and asked a manager where I might find it. She said that they didn't have it in stock but then continued to show me a bunch of other options. Is this weird to write a review for a supermarket? Probably. But I'm not actually writing the review for them. It's a Shaw's/Star Market. They have food. I'm happy. But they also have the wonderful addition of the wine shop. It's a bit pricier than a standard liquor store for non-wine liquors, but I love the convenience. And the woman who works there most times I head in is lovely. We chat about sports, she bags my beer. It's a good, good feeling on a Friday. So, really, Massachusetts, the wine store hasn't turned me into a raging drunkard who buys booze for underage people. Why is this so hard to do? read more

This review is really just to include the Wine Shop, which has been awesome to me. I shop at this Shaw's a lot, as it's on my way home a few nights a week. Basically, it's a grocery store. They tend to be well-stocked in the items we buy. The cashiers are usually kind, although occasionally we'll get someone who seems to be having a bad day, but that happens. It's clean, spacious, they have a Redbox... it does the trick for us. Really, just the grocery is probably 3.5 stars. The wine shop, on the other hand, is a surprisingly pleasant experience. It's just a small little place, but I always find something that'll make do. The prices are medium-low. Obviously, it's super-convenient. I'd shop here pretty much all the time if they had the specific type of wine my girlfriend like. The one thing they can control in their space is service, and they do that excellently. I've been rung up by a few different women and a man and they've all been very kind and helpful. They make suggestions and can point you to anything you ask for that they have. Overall, a good, convenient experience. read more

I'll put it out there: I love this Shaw's. I'm happy to drive from Inman Square to Brighton to go to THIS Shaw's. It's my favorite Shaw's (which, of course, is not that much of a compliment since the once in Central Square is disgusting, and the one in Porter Square feels like a Harvard Law School meat market). For starters, it's never, ever crowded (this could mean that it will shut one day...), they have a far bigger organic section than the other Shaw's, they have far more organic produce than the other local Stars/Shaw's, and -- !! -- have you seen the "premium" candy aisle?! So many Lindt bars, so many Black and Green's, so many Cadburys... it's heaven. Oh, and unlike the aforementioned Stars (Central and Porter), the self checkout is STAFFED, so when the machine goes crazy and starts incorrectly shouting that you have illegally placed something in a plastic bag, a staff member will quickly come over and fix the whole thing. read more

This is my go-to Shaw's for a reason: it's just damn good. But, the layout of this one isn't as good as some others in the area (Comm. Ave, Brighton Ave., to name a few...). Although there is off street parking, there is only one way in and out of it, so it can get pretty backed up if you come during peak hours. And, because it is a rather new Shaw's, the parking lot lines (in the "road", not the spaces) are faded from construction and people just drive like idiots in the middle. There are cameras and a security guard patrolling, so it is a safe lot. The selection of items here is as good as you can find at other Shaw's and Star Market locations in the city limits, as are the prices. I haven't had a problem with freshness of any food - produce, meat, seafood, or anything else. There is one Red Box near the registers if you need to get a movie, which is nice, although having more than one would be better! The Breugger's bagel shop that is in the entrance is a nice touch. A huge perk is that there is a Hubway bicycle "station" right at the store entrance, as well as a big bike rack under the awning of the entrance. If you are a cyclist, it's a great spot to shop because it is near many overpasses that take you to the Charles River bike paths. read more

I can't say that this is my fave grocery store of all time, but it gets the job done. It's not quite as brightly lit or as spacious feeling as, say, the Stop and Shop on Everett (which I frequent fairly frequently--how's that for alliteration?), but it's got some good selection. It's closer to my office, so it's convenient that I can grab some creamer or yogurt or something when I need to, and just schlep on over to work, but it's kind of annoying that there's all that construction going on nearby (okay, that's actually my employer's fault, and not Shaw's, so guess I shouldn't complain too much about that). Overall, decent store, decent selection. I like that they've got a liquor store attached, as well as that Bruegger's. One stop shop! read more

Is some kind of rule that everyone who works here has to be rude, apathetic, & hateful? Today was the 1st, and last time we ever visit this store. While we were initially really impressed with the cleanliness/presentation/prices, our "so-far-so-good" mentality was quickly destroyed when we checked out. The Cashier barely made eye contact, and when we asked about the price of an item, she literally rolled her eyes, didnt say anything, and just walked away from us. I guess she was checking with someone at Customer Service, so I went to the nearby aisle and took a picture of the advertised price. She nodded, made an update, and continued to ring us out. We noticed price discrepancies on several different items, but it became too awkward to say anything. Another Associate came over several times to help out, but never acknowledged us as Customers, just kind of whispered instructions to the cashier. When I asked if I could put my phone number into the key pad, they both looked at me and the other Associate said, "Well, she already hit 'NO' so we'd have to ring in your whole order if you want to do that". I said never mind, and the Associate said, "You should've put it in at the beginning when it asked you" meaning the keypad? I explained that this was our first time in the store, my husband was standing in front of the keypad, not me, & I just signed up on the app. They offered no solutions, instead became defensive & kind of blamed me. I find it difficult to believe there isn't a solution or store code that can be put into the register to automatically deduct sales from the items purchased. She then asked if we played Monopoly, my husband - annoyed and tired of the whole experience just said "yes", and she handed us a huge stack of monopoly playing cards. Not that we have a playing sheet to put them on, but okay? That's supposed to make it better? We missed out on about $40 worth of savings. If you want to take photos of the price for everything you put in your cart as proof, and be demeaned by the rude employees - by all means, shop here. As for me, I'll keep looking for a decent grocery store. read more

This Shaws has done a great deal of renovations, and still they haven't really caught my attention. I stop in here every once in a while when at work and would rather choose what I want to eat in a salad, or grab some odds and ends from the fruit/veg section (usually some good choices hidden in there somewhere...) it's conveniently located. I don't do my grocery shopping here though. The selection looks like it goes on for miles, but I still don't feel like it makes sense to spend that much money and not get food from WF instead... It's nice to see that they are trying to cater to the people looking for organic/healthy options. read more

I am disappointed with this Shaws. The sushi here sucks compared to the one on comm ave. Literally, it sucks. I bought some sushi there and threw away more than half of it because it tasted old and nasty. There is plenty of parking, and there is a petco right next door, but nothing really impressive. The layout seems really awkward too. Also, don't even try waiting in line to get a bagel at the bagel store right next door. It takes those people 15 minutes to make one sandwich. read more

I really like how this store has a Brueggers attached to it. It makes early morning shopping trips so much easier. And it's not unusual for me to go food shopping at 7am on a Saturday morning, so the convenience of grabbing a bagel and coffee makes this a great store Overall this is a decent Shaws because it is well lit, clean, organized and I always can find someone to help me locate something. I find that the butchers are really helpful. On a recent visit I was getting ingredients for meatballs. I could not find my standard chuck/pork/veal mix so I talked to the butcher and he helped me locate all the components quickly. On the down side, I went in there looking for red food coloring for red velvet cake and they did not have it. I found it else where but when I randomly checked back a month later they were still out, or out yet again. read more
