Perishable quality is better than most other MBs because of high turnover. The service at the deli and checkout stinks. I really don't know why this store is so popular. They mark up items such as Coca-Cola 12 pack. In the past few months, even though this is a popular item that many people buy, they have charged $4 while its on sale. Otherwise, its $5. MB's competitors have ranged between $4 and $5 on regular price and have gone as low as $2.50 when on sale. I've also seen 3 for $9 plus a free bag of pretzels when you buy 3. I've seen regular pricing go as low as $3 for 12 packs at gas stations.
Want another example? MB charged $.59 a pound for turkeys in the few weeks leading up to Thanksgiving. Its competitors (S&S, Shaws and Hannaford) were all at $.49 a pound at the stores I checked. Good example since many people need to buy Thanksgiving Turkeys.
Also, MB wouldn't go so low as to offer 9 ounce bags of organic tortilla chips for $.50 or $3.99 for a pack of 6 Dove Soaps, which are deal I caught at Shaws.
So, I personally don't think this store saves people money. If anything, it has a negative goodwill effect on the community with the way the chain has held up the construction of competitor's new stores. Even though you think, not too much skin off my back, it really is because the town is losing tax revenue. That means its all the less they can give back in terms of services its provides to its citizens.
Plus, who ever heard of a store that pays almost everyone in the store the same amount? Well, its true at MB. Everyone gets almost the same amount. Cashiers, front end supervisors, assistant managers, etc. all get the same pay. They start at minimum wage and then they get measely increases. Since I used to work for Hannaford and my friend worked for MB at the same time, I got $.25 more to start and then after 6 months I was making anywhere from $.50 to $1.00 more than him at any given time. The only people in the store that actually get more money than everyone else at MB is people who work in the deli and meat depts, which is $.50 more an hour, and the store manager. And so, I actually made more money than an assistant manager at MB. I also know that Hannaford pays $1.00 to $1.50 more the the front end supervisors than cashiers and baggers.
So what's the big deal about this store? They really do nothing right.
And when you think about time= money, and lines frequently extend into the aisles at this particular location, there are really better choices. Frequently, between the deli line and the checkout line, you can wait a good 90 minutes, plus considering the extra time to navigate the store, you can easily account for a good 2 extra hours. However, unfortunately I don't have the time to food shop during the week. If you monetize that time, now we are talking Stop and Shop is cheaper. Plus, they don't take internet coupons or double coupons like Stop and Shop does, so that counts against them since I like to use coupons.
So at the end of the day, I'm really getting a much better product at Stop and Shop with much better service, and I'm out of the store in a much, much quicker time.
So, in short, once I monetize that time, consider their gas rewards program, and consider for the little extra that I pay (fact they have a gas rewards program plus double coupons and take internet coupons really cancels the monetary savings you get at MB. And yes, there is currently a $3 off Ben and Jerrys coupon on the internet that I couldn't redeem at MB. :( It was convenient for me to redeem it there and they wouldn't take it. So, B&Js is free or greatly discounted everywhere except MB.
BTW, link is http://www.bandjpromotions.com/ to get $3 of B&Js
Try BJs or Traders Joe's for price. These stores are a good 10-15% lower in price than MB. Maybe you can save some time with these stores and save some $$.
Edit: kunsg brings up a good point. MB does overcharge you quite often and although I've ran into a competitors with pricing problems (with S&S and Hannaford), they will give you the item free. At Stop & Shop you have to request it though but the policy is displayed at every register in the 10 Stop and Shop stores I've been to.
When I used to shop at MB, they would always be rude about it too when they have pricing mistakes; out of everywhere I have ever shopped at, MB definitely makes the most errors on average. read more
