I don't have a lot of experience with Indian markets. They had a relatively decent selection of things, but not huge with a lot of variety... ..but the overall feel I got from the place that it was dirty and kind of grungy. I don't expect things to be spic-n-span/bright and shiny, but I at least expect them to be relatively clean. read more

This place is half liquor store, half Indian grocery store. I am reviewing the grocery side. Pros: Lots of good snacks (mixture, Kukure, peanut chikki, stuff like that) Condiments (pickle, Kewar water) Fresh vegetables (like bitter melon, brinjal) Frozen vegetables and food items (moringa, curry leaves) Most pigeons I've ever seen in one place on the roof outside Cons: I was looking for soya chaap but the lone employee seemed extremely busy and stressed out and I felt too bad to ask, but that's more of a me thing Shelves looked a little scant in some places read more

Coming out from Market Basket I saw this store and thought of checking the place being Indian. After checking I asked when they usually top up their store items from the lady standing at the counter, she reacted very rudely while making faces with another lady standing next to her who was also indian. I really felt offended by the kind of attitude they showed me ( especially the older lady standing at the counter always). Never gonna visit that store again. read more

Conveniently located next to Market Basket, you can come here after shopping at Market Basket to pick up Indian food as well as some beer and wine. They had a lot of rice, spices, snacks, and a small selection of frozen food. I could not find the expiration date of some of the frozen food. My advice would be to take a good look at what you are buying to make sure it is not expired. The other side of the store has beer and wine, with decent prices. The cashier tried not to give me a plastic bag since plastic bags have to be free during COVID. I had to ask nicely and she gave me one. read more

This place is awesome. They sell homemade samosas at the register that are packed with potatoes and veggies with delicious spices. Better than from a restaurant and they're enormous. The price for cinnamon is literally three times cheaper here than at any grocery store! Look out for expiration dates though!! Lol read more

Buyer beware, CHECK THE EXPIRATION DATES ON EVERYTHING! My parents and I went to this store today to purchase a few essentials. I picked up 2 of the 5-pack Naan. My mom wanted to know if they were fresh and asked to check the expiration date. It had expired in May 2019. I took it back to the owner of the store and before I could say anything she said that she was aware that it was expired and that's why she had kept it aside. Uh, "kept it aside"? It was on a shelf for purchase. That was red flag 1. My dad purchased a talc, and when we came home, we found out that it had expired in 2013. 6 YEARS ago! And again, this was on a product shelf, for purchase by unsuspecting people like us. Lesson learned. I will never come back to this store. What kind of ethics do these owners have?? read more

I go here all the time. They have an excellent selection, and they give good cooking tips when I have questions about Indian food cooking.

If you have any connection to India and miss it, come to Little India. It's in a vintage brick building near the parking lot of another grocery store. Indians own the store and carry all kinds of spices, drinks, and foods from India. The aisles are a little hard to navigate, but that's part of the adventure! read more

I think that whoever decided to combine a liquor store with an Indian grocery store had a stroke of genius. The grocery section of the store is most excellent, they are quite large and have numerous brands of Indian groceries, their produce section is decent and they have a good selection. The liquor store side of the store has a surprisingly good selection of microbreweries and other basics. This place is worth the trip. Plus there is a Market Basket in the same parking lot, so you can get your standard food staples there if you wish. read more

Little India - Store front Sep 2012 - Grocery Near Me - Somerville, Massachusetts

Came here to get some Shan spices for cooking. They weren't wearing masks. And the lady coughed on the samosa at the counter I asked for. When we asked for a different one, she asked why as she our back the one she coughed on the tray. We just left and told her to keep the money. read more

Little India is a little gem of an Indian grocery store in Somerville. They have been so helpful and accommodating always , but more so now during the time of Pandemic. I am a senior citizen with underlying health issues and have been asked by doctors not to go to any store or enclosed facilities. Nandita , who manages the store has been so kind and has gone out of her way to help us. She collects the Indian Groceries and bags them and all my husband has to do is give her a CC and get the stuff. She has always helped in finding stuff, telling us when the new shipment will be in and recommends other products and brands when one is not available. At this time of Covid, when the supply chain is not always smooth, we have to understand that we can only get in small supply. We appreciate a small Indian business do its best for its customers and try their hardest at this difficult time. read more

I've never been there before, so I went there in the morning on a weekday when it would probably be less busy. I was the only one in the store, so I was able to get in, make my purchases, and check out quickly. They have a lot of items there, but I didn't take time to look around because I am trying to limit my time in shops due to the pandemic. The woman at the counter was pleasant and helpful. I look forward to going there again when the pandemic is over. read more

MY FEEDBACK: PLEASE AVOID THIS STORE. Owners are disrespectful towards the customer. I have witnessed this a couple of times in the store, and finally, it happened to me as well. I came to exchange an unused item, that I got the day before, as it was about to get expired in a couple of weeks. I want to exchange it with something which does not expire so fast. It is entirely alright to have a shop policy not to accept return items, and I respect that. Nevertheless, in the name of this policy, being rude to the customer is not acceptable, and I don't approve that. read more

**** STAY AWAY*** If I could rate this place as zero stars, I would. I bought a bag of basmati rice from this place, and when I opened it, there were small bugs inside. I called the store and the lady that answered replied "No one has complained of that". I replied, "well maybe not all bags have them, but mine does". She said she would replace it. I drove all of the way there and she said she talked to some "uncle" and he said I couldn't exchange it. The customer service is of low priority for them as they sell bug infested food, and DO NOT have the courtesy to replace/refund the products. Unfortunately, I learned the hard way having moved here from another state and this being the closest store to where I currently live. I will tell all of my friends and acquaintances NOT to shop here...I will drive farther and go to Patel Brothers. read more

Little India recently opened up next to Market Basket. I have been in here twice since it opened. Little India is tidy and spacious. The women who work here are friendly. They sell indian produce, spices (including bulk spices), teas, baked goods, and prepared food. They carry beer and wine in a separate room from where they sell groceries. Selling beer and wine right next to Market Basket is a smart move because the location is very convenient. The prices on beer seem to be good, not inflated like some places. Also the prices on spices are really cheap compared to Shaw's or MB. I bought a bag of of green Cardamom pods (about 70) for 2.99! I like this place and I will be back. read more

The people who run this joint are extremely cheap and it really shows. This guy relies on most people A) not checking their receipt or B) not caring enough to put the stuff back once they're at the check out and realize how horribly they're being ripped off. Stay away!! I was charged over $23 before tax for two items I purchased. I had my friend call back the same day and ask what the cost would be for the same exact items. He said over the phone $19. It's not very much money to most of us but I'm sure it adds up for them to change their prices liberally after gaging the customer. read more

This place is too legit to quit. I'm in the middle of the Union, desperate for food stuffs. Let's go down to the ravenous hellmouth that is Market Basket. Oh, I'd like to pick up some beer while I'm there too. Too bad the hellmouth swallowed it all. But wait. What's that? Sparkling in the distance, like a beautiful blood-free diamond amidst the squalor and bloodshed of the MB, sits my beloved Little India. Divided into two parts, to the right is the booze and to the left is all the delicious everything you will ever need to lead a happy life. The price is right on the beer and wine--what up PBR and Franzia! But the real draw of this place (aside from the low-priced and easily accessible alcohol, duh) is the Indian market to the left. It's got dried goods, spices, veggies, herbs, and AND prepared foods. And not crummy mass-produced white people-centric prepared foods. Delicious wonderful sweet sweet everything. Desserts! Meals! OMNOMNOMS!!! OK, so in case it's unclear, I love this place and I don't know why you're still reading this when you could be eating all the jamun and gajar ka halva right now. read more

I shop here regularly, mostly for Indian groceries. I'm addicted to the masala bread, which they can't seem to keep in stock--75% of the time I walk out disappointed. But then I remember that I can just head over to When Pigs Fly for my bread fix, and all is well. They never overcharged me, and I do the math every time before they process my purchases. Sorry to here the complaints about them overcharging. I noticed that one of the cashiers tends to add up the prices of my two or three items in his head, and I suppose he could get the total wrong on occasion. Little India is conveniently located next to Market Basket, which makes it extremely convenient to shop for Indian food. regular groceries, and alcohol in a single trip. read more

The only kind of place that does not do receipts where the item name is listed with the price are scammy ones. Receipts here are a list of prices, that's it. Many items in the store have no price on them, so they can charge whatever they're in the mood for. read more

It's a useful place to get your Indian spices and groceries. I usually just get spices and dried beans. The prices aren't particularly cheap, but I'm always glad and grateful for ethnic grocers. I think the $15 credit card minimum is really annoying, so that's why I'm dropping it a star. read more

Pros: -Good wine/beer selection (haven't bought food from them). -Fair prices. -Can usually find parking. -Basic tobacco selection. -Owner is a nice and relatively professional. -If you request a certain wine/beer to the owner (that is not in their inventory) he will most likely put an order in for you. Cons: -Items are not correctly priced on occasion. -Some of the cashiers are not helpful and often do not charge the correct amount. Beware of this! (the older cashiers are good while I found that the younger ones seem nearly clueless. -Closes relatively early compared to other wine/beer establishments. -Don't bother asking for advice on alcohol. -Not a huge deal but the lighting is dim and somewhat uninviting, also the signage is not great, as the business is somewhat tucked away. read more

This store has a great selection of fresh produce and spice blends. The owners are kind and helpful. They also have a sizable wine/beer section. I love coming here! read more

Groceries part was okay but I purchased an idol of Ganesha for Ganesh chaturthi about a week ago. I chose the ganesha idol which was wrapped in plastic bubble wrap over other idol which was open thinking it would be safer to buy idol thats wrapped in bubblewrap. When i opened it for pooja it was completely broken/cracked in multiple places which felt horrible. Although I had to put tape around it and use it for the pooja, i still want to report this to the store. Its not acceptable at all. read more

Fantastic service! The cashier gave me a free party decoration -- a giant lime that says "Corona de Mayo" on it -- with our purchase of beer. The staff is also always friendly and very helpful. Thank you, Little India! read more

Store specializing in Indian spices, sweets, biscuits, vegetables and a potpourri of other ethnic items. It also sells beer and other beverages. Unlike some other Indian spice shops which are very cramped and double up as butcheries ( not an inviting prospect for vegans and vegetarians), this establishment is spacious and well-stocked. The cashier is friendly and helpful. It is basically in the same lot as the Market Basket supermarket on Somerville Avenue.. Entrance to this shop is to the right as you face the supermarket. There are also several bus services, including 85 and 86, to Kendall and Harvard Squares.respectively. read more

Shop here. Parking in rear. the store offers great Indian food and beer/wine at a great price. It's awesome. I plan to visit Little India often, but I won't shop at the MarketBasket next door. Welcome to Somerville! read more

I admit I have been spoiled by India Market in Worcester, but this a decent little Indian grocery store in Somerville. 3 stars by Massachusetts standards, but 4 stars by Boston standards. It's a bit out of the way for me and navigating the Somerville streets is no pleasure I must say. But if I am at the Market Basket next door, it's a perfect little stop. It's Gujarati-owned so no fish, meats and chicken to be found here. But you can find all the spices and spice pre-mixes for making an awesome chicken curry! I just buy my meats at the Market Basket and I am all set. read more

This place is perfect for those out of the ordinary ingredients that Indian recipes call for (red lentils, garam masala). I looked over the beer on the way out and saw they had a good selection of microbrews. Prices were very reasonable and selection was great, I will definitely be back read more

I was surprised to see how big this place is. That allows for a great selection that the other Indian grocery stories around don't have. It's a great place to stop in before you head in to Market Basket. They have everything from frozen naan to an array of chutneys. I walked out of here with Thai curry sauce, tamarind, ginger garlic paste, and some cookies for under $10. read more

I love this place. I come here often for spices which are WAY cheaper then their next door neighbors. Not sure what the big fuss is about people being rude here other then some people are uber sensitive. I never had any issues and always am greeted with a smile and a pleasant hello when I stop in. The alcohol selection is pretty good too!! read more

Disgusting. I've been in a few times, so I'm used to the grime and rudeness, but what happened yesterday is why customer service has gone to hell. I was buying a jar of curry sauce, brought it to the counter. Had to repeatedly call over to the man sitting not ten feet away...apparently the internet and his soap opera were just too engaging to do work. I asked to use my debit card, he said no...ok, fine, but don't just gruffly tell me no. As I'm pulling the cash out of my wallet, he turns back to the soap opera. Getting the cash took me all of five seconds, but I was left saying "excuse me" and "I'd like to pay" for a few minutes. Finally I was waving the money in the air and had to yell at the guy. I was the only customer in the store but he couldn't be bothered to take the 30 seconds to check me out? So he takes the money and lays it on the register, rings in my item, while still paying more attention to the tv. Then, and this is the best part, he sneezes, a wet, gross, snot flying sneeze, all over his hands. He doesn't even attempt to wipe them when he reaches for my item and the money. I stopped him and asked him to call over the other man working because he needed to wash his hands. He shrugs and moves to continue without the slightest care. I then informed him that I didn't want the item and I was reaching over to take back the money he had yet to touch, post-sneeze. I understand that this was risky and I was a total jerk doing this, but given how little interest he had in personal hygiene... This place is a market, with produce and other groceries. I expect people to be at least somewhat sanitary while working here. I mean come on, at least pretend you are when people are interacting with you! I told the guy he was disgusting and I'm never going back. Ironically, I'm not feeling well today and have a sore throat and a headache. Thanks buddy, your disgusting habits are rewarding us all. read more

I used to frequent this shop for my Indian grocery needs. I was overcharged twice and I saw many expired products. Once is understandable - twice and no refund is not acceptable. Would prefer the Central Square Dosa Factory attached grocery shop & Waltham Patel Bros. better than this. read more

Solid shop. Has all the essentials for Indian home cooking, plus a bunch of nice extra (ready-made foods, puja supplies, drinks, etc). Customer service is pleasant -- very helpful staff, answer your questions, if you need just a chili or two they throw it in for free as is usual in India. They do enforce the credit card minimum, which is reasonable for a small business. Location next to MB is icing on the cake. read more
