I popped in here once while waiting for my spa appointment across the street. I needed a quick snack and some hydration. The store was clean and brightly lit, parking lot spacious and plenty of spots available. People seemed friendly at checkout and throughout the store. The deli-made snack I picked up was fresh and tasty. This isn't close enough for regular grocery shopping but I would shop here if I lived in the neighborhood. read more

Star Market advertises great prices, but it's a bait and switch. The coupons are digital, and if you don't remember, during the other activities during check out you don't get the price. Never going back there again. I think their business model is a hairs breath this side of bait and switch read more

Very dirty store. Their bathrooms are totally disgusting and have no soap in them. Management is very unprofessional and lazy. I can't tell you how many times I've picked up an item there and it's expired. One of them employees there even called another customer a weirdo to another employee based of what the person there was wearing. Used to work here so can speak on exp there's definitely a few rodents in the store management plays favorites with their full timers and spits in the faces of the part timers. They speak to you very rudely and will make you feel like your over reacting or that your causing the issue you speak up on. They don't rotate their groceries for the most part their produce is always on the floor just to be put on the shelf again, their breads and pastries are always torn open by rats. Every night there'd be a damaged food item in the back because they got to it. Management does nothing about this. And when a customer leaves milk in an aisle and it's past the refrigerate period they still put it back. Trust me your doing your self and community a favor don't shop there the one in Porter square is better. read more

Star Market - Prime example of what I mean...DO NOT buy your lobster here - Grocery Near Me - Somerville, Massachusetts

So I had several dealings with whom I presume was the Manager on Duty this evening. (She was a brunette white woman in her 20s, probably 5'6". I didn't get her name.) She really blew me away with her efficiency: in the span of 5 minutes that I was in the store, she supervised the self-checkout area, unlocked the customer service area and helped me return a Fedex package, removed several mis-scanned items from my cart, and found a lost credit card. All with a smile. read more

We call this the Dark Star. I lived next door to it twenty years ago just as the neighborhood was starting to turn into a pricey price party. But the Dark Star doesn't change; it has remained almost unchanged over those twenty years. Even a good number of the employees are still there. And they haven't aged. It's eerie. I've always found it adequate, but since the place is always nearly deserted (whose cars are those in the parking lot then?), I can get in and out pretty quickly. If a line forms, another cashier pops in and takes up the slack. It's small, you're in, you're out. The produce is feh, the specialty foods are interesting and good, and the rest of it is your standard fare, but much better than elbowing people at the surrounding markets, cheap or not. BUT IT'S THE CHARACTER. IT IS THE D A R K S T A R. ...because, it's poorly lit. read more

Rarely crowded, it's a decent alternative to cheap neighbor Market Basket or convenient Shaw's in Porter. A bit pricier - ideal for a short list run. Full disclosure: I originally despised this location. The produce was limp and overpriced, and the pre-packaged inventory followed suit (less limpness, more costly). Unsavory characters would roam the parking lot. Only one register open at any time, even when stacked five deep. And they never had Shark Bites. But in the last six months or so, I've seen a serious turnaround. Better managed, cleaner operations and if you can abandon brand loyalty to gun for sale items, you may in fact find it worthwhile. The parking lot population is still sketchy as hello. Treat it like a zombocalypse - run in, buy fast, scurry out and gas hard. read more

Star Market - Grocery Near Me - Somerville, Massachusetts

I come here for the easy in, easy out (sounds like a cheap date). My vegetarian needs are satisfied with morning star and boca. Large parking lot with plenty of empty spaces. And I won a scratch ticket here for $1,000! read more

Although this Star Market is convenient, right near the T and bus stops, and open 24/7, it's horrifying. - The prices are extremely high, sales don't offset this - I've found tons of expired food here before, so remember to check the dates - I've been rung up for food of the persons behind me, notified the cashiers, and then they still didn't it off until I asked them to - Cashiers won't hesitate to close their lanes in your face - It always takes long to check out regardless of how empty the store is - Try to avoid using the restroom because it's usually a mess read more

This is my all-time favorite grocery place. It's so convenient! The only 24-hour super market around. I like their salad and warm food bar. There are a lot of options including fried chicken, fish, beef and even seafood! read more

When I need a quick fix of Kellogg's Corn Pops, Campbell's Chunky Soup, and a Gallon of Milk, I come here. Don't know how this place stays in business...but I'm glad that it stays afloat. It's shabby and doesn't have the best selection in stuff, but it's never crowded. You don't have to worry about parking or getting your door dinged like the Porter Square Star Market. read more

So last night was the first time my boyfriend looked at my yelp account, and his response was, "I am suprised you didn't review the Star Market on Beacon Street". I was suprised too after he mentioned it, and I layed in bed wanting to. There are reasons why this is the best Star Market. Let me list a few: It's always well-stocked. The store is always neat and tidy. Good normal selection of organic products without being stuffy like some of the other stores. And the main reason: LYDIA! Who is Lydia? The main reason to go there. She rings you up attentively, and is lovingly ginger with all of your food products, as not to damage them upon ringing. You'll here her verbalizing how she is going to bag them "produce, frozen, dairy" and won't let you go until everything is put into your bags with precision and care. And she always let's you know how much you saved. That's care. We watch her with wide eyes everytime we go in, and are in awe of her love for her job. WE LOVE LYDIA! Plus, if you ever drive there, on the way home, Dial-A-Pizza is a few doors down, and it's $5 if you pick up a large cheese. read more

YES! The Star Market that is stuck in the 1970s. If you ever wanted to know and see what an original Star Market looked like (before they merged with Shaw's), go to this one. It is stuck in the past. OK some of the interior has been updated, but overall it still has that 1970s feel to it. I often wonder why Shaw's keeps this store open, because it's never busy. The only thing I can think of is to be an 'off load' for the Shaw's in Porter Square (which can be a nightmare on a weekend). But then again, where this Star is, you'd need to know it was there to know to go there when the Shaw's in Porter was jammed. Even thought it is branded as "Star Market", it is essentially a Shaw's with different signage. So all the regular Shaw's gripes apply. It's over priced, the selection is kinda meh, meats are meh, produce is meh. It's essentially a Shaw's, so don't expect much. read more

Ghetto Super Star! I started coming here cos getting parking in the Porter Sq one can be a headwreck. This place ALWAYS has plenty of parking. Yes, it's a bit grubby around the edges, but it's basically clean and has all the essentials. Best of all, given that I have the attention span of a flea in grocery stores, it's never crowded. I have to mention the lady (Lydia?) who works one of the checkouts - she will call out to you ("Hello! I can take you here!") if you look like you're going to pass her by. She's ever so slightly android-like in her eagerness, but it's a nice change for the surliness you get in most stores. Actually the staff here are generally more pleasant than most. read more

Lydia, a.k.a. "Doods" is totally awesome. Sometimes I see her walking around the neighborhood, and I wonder what her life-story is. She's the nicest, most-helpful, most-awkward employee ever... and I love her! It's cheap, and you can get what you need. True, the Shaws in Porter is open 24/7, which is sometimes a life-saver, but it doesn't have the character of my favorite Star. read more

Although this store is more pleasant than the Star at Porter Square, it has a poor selection of meat, terrible produce most of which is inedible, and the same high prices Star is renown for. The last time I went two employees were actually engaged in a shouting match with one another over some store policy. Couldn't wait to get out of there. But the baggers are very pleasant, so I will give them that. read more

Okay, maybe I'm baised because in NYC supermarkets are damn expensive and anywhere will seem like they have great deals. This Star Market was pretty convenient, not remotely crowded, and had a great variety of items in each department on sale. Friendly's icecream for $1.99?! Sweet. (badum-chh). I also noticed that one of the employees was assisting a handicapped wheelchair customer shop by getting the groceries on her list. Like, accompanied her during her visit. I've never seen this before. The employees were friendly (also a rare commodity where I'm from) and didn't look like they wanted to kill themselves. Incredible. Good spot. read more

My old roommate and I used to call this place "shitty star;" not because it is bad, it is just a lot crappier in appearance than the spiffy Porter Shaws (which, since the redesign has lost a lot of appeal for me). I like this place a lot because: 1) they always have parking; 2) it is never crowded; 3) the staff is nice and helpful; 4) always well stocked; 5) they have a particularly expansive salad dressing isle. I don't buy produce here. It is just never that great. But for all other products: thumbs up! Particularly good when you are looking for an item on sale that is not in stock at the Porter Shaws. FYI: juices, pet food, paper products are in the front beyond the produce (adjacent to the check-outs). read more

I hate this store. I live one street over so it's a 3 minute walk for me but it's still not worth it. Why? 1. It is always understaffed. There are often 10+ lines for the one checkout that's open 2. Often under stocked 3. The stock range is awful 4. The price is not competitive 5. The "loyalty program" ("just4u") is the most illogical thing. I have to login to an app, "choose" from lists of 100s of offers to get discounts. Does star market seriously think I'm going to spend all this time picking these offers out? All it does is disincent me to go to the stores because I just feel like I'm being cheated of good prices because I don't have a half hour to spare messing round on my phone Also - inexplicably - there's another star market hats much better just a few minutes walk away. Anyway - don't bother. Go to market basket. read more

I wish I loved this place because it is conveniently located, always has parking, and is always empty, but the merits end there. Unfortunately, the lighting is creepy and dingy, and the quiet emptiness just amplifies that. The low flow of customers seems to make them unable to staff the place. I walked around the store recently for 5 minutes trying to find a person to help me, but there were no employees in the aisles. I understand that this is probably a company-wide policy but I was frustrated that they don't swipe a store card through for you anymore. The employees claim they aren't allowed to scan their own cards in for you anymore. Kind of a bummer to not get your sale prices when you've chosen your cart-full of stuff based on the sales. On the other hand, they have a very small (but better than nothing) natural foods section. They carry some store brand Wild Harvest items, too, which is nice. But unless I can't afford the extra time, it'd be best to just go to Shaws, Market Basket, or Whole Foods. read more

This place is great for two reasons: it is cheap and it is almost always empty. I went here for all of my grocery shopping while I lived in Somerville and for the life of me I never understood why this place was always empty. Only a few streets away there is a Market Basket which is literally torture to walk through because of how overcrowded it is. You know those end of the world films where the streets are so packed that people trample each other? Yeah, that's how it feels over there and meanwhile 5 minutes away Star Market has the same prices and is relatively empty. As I mentioned before, Star Market had great name brands as well as store generic brands and it had great prices. It's the best supermarket in town by far. read more

When I think of this Star Market, I automatically make a "ehhhh, uhhhhhh" noise. Have it be known that I am not a fan. Although there is never, EVER, a line, you won't find stellar service. In fact, there's a pretty good chance that your cashier will be chatting with another cashier about their personal issues, life events, or complaining about something. At least I don't have to make small talk. Besides being a typical grocery store, the produce is terribly lacking! Arg! But, let's flip this negativity around: here is why I enjoy this Star Market: 1. There's never a line (we already covered that) 2. It's right next to Petsi Pies (go grab a coffee and scone and do some grocery shopping) 3. There's never a line 4. It's never crowded 5. There's never a line There are so many better options nearby: the other Star Market in Porter Square, Market Basket on Somerville Ave., or Whole Foods on Beacon. read more

It's a Star Market. It's open 24 hours. It has a deli counter, fresh fruits and vegetables, a butcher, a huge selection of food -- what more do you want? Did I mention it's 24 hours? Only downside is that it can get REALLY crowded on weekends (or before a big storm, natch), and the store isn't really set up to handle long lines. Before the last big snowstorm, the lines reached halfway down the center aisles. read more

I've been coming here for years as it was still a bit different from Shaw's -- which bought the Star Market chain and rebranded most of the stores. No longer! They have moved everything around and removed less expensive item (like Teddie peanut butter) and added lots of upscale, expensive items. There's also less on the shelves! Arrrrgh! read more

I used to shop here a fair amount, but lately I just drive past. They do have a fairly decent vegetable section -- that's the high point. The deli used to put out samples of sliced pepperoni, but they've stopped doing that. My main complaints was the chickens. Two or three times I had to return whole chickens because they smelled spoiled when I opened the bag. There's just no excuse for that. And when they switched to carrying only pork that had been brined (I'm on a no sodium diet) I just stopped going there. read more

It's a supermarket. It's not a great supermarket, but for those of us along Beacon St/Somervile Ave and too far of a walk from Shaws in Porter (or Whole Foods a bit further south down Beacon Street), it's convenient and has almost everything you'd want. The prices are alright - not great, not terrible, just alright. I can hear you Market Basket folks screaming that Star Market is overpriced, but I'm not sure you've ever been to a Whole Foods, where you'll drop a week of pay on a stash of bananas and cereal. Also, it's a supermarket, so you're going to pay a markup on miscellaneous home goods (toothbrushes, cleaning supplies, etc) - I tend to get these off Amazon, instead. The meat section is again, alright. They *almost* always have what I'm looking for, fresh. Nowhere near the selection you'll get up the street at Shaws -- no extremely lean ground beef, not always a lamb loin chop, and almost certainly no delmonico cuts of steak. But you'll find a perfectly suitable package of chicken breasts and a nicely cut t-bone, if that's your thing. The story is the same with the produce. They never, ever have fresh chives. Well, there was this one time, about a year ago; but that was the only time. They've been growing our their organics selection, which is much appreciated. But the bananas are typically either all-yellow or all-green (no spectrum), and it's a "take what you can get" kind of story with oranges and other fruits. Like other reviewers said -- this place is never busy. The staff never changes, and they're helpful and friendly. Overall, it's a stone's throw from my house, which is why I go here. If I had another option, I'd probably use it instead. read more

I don't really know how to rate this place, I mean... It's definitely not a 5 star, but it doesn't deserve a 1-star. Pros: - Available parking 24/7 - Has the same stuff Shaw's down the street in Porter Square has, so you can still use your Shaw's card here - No long lines at the cashiers Cons: - The produce isn't great I guess with a 3:1 pro-to-con ratio, it should deserve a higher rating. However, I'd only come here if I needed groceries quick or if I forgot an ingredient on my shopping list. Come here if you plan to make a quick and easy shopping spree. read more

Do go here if: you don't mind that it's pricier than Stop & Shop Do go here if: it is "normal business hours" Do go here if: you are walking / using the T Do not go here if: it is a weekend, after work, that rush hour-y time right after work, or a snowstorm is coming Do not go here if: you are driving, the parking lot is a disaster (though it is better in the summer, which is weird to me because since when do college students drive to grocery stores?) Do not go here if: hanging out in grocery store lines makes you homicidal. Honestly, it's not bad, but when it's crowded, it's intolerable. And you should never drive here (I only go here after work, and I commute using public transit). It has a nice selection and stuff you wouldn't find at Stop & Shop, but the prices are higher. If I'm able to leave work early on a Friday, I do some routine grocery shopping here. If I can't, I don't bother going here. read more

Pretty standard, nothing special, but stars based on: 1) price. slightly cheaper than Shaw's, I think. 2) convenience. Right near that staple of mine, Pho N Rice. Also, relatively uncrowded, and no lines. 3) quite a bit in there. Not as big as Shaw's, and a little more lacking in the organic section. It's okay. Nothing special. Nothing wrong. Generally a good place to go if you live nearby. read more

This is a great common US market. Prices are good, nice variety of moderately priced items, good meats and produce - just what you want in a market - especially when you're an out-of-towner and are looking to cook your own meals when traveling. I've been a single-mom traveler for 14 years and amen to being able to prepare pasta and a great steak, grab a gallon of milk and some cereal. We rent a nice apartment (through AirBnB) which is about five blocks away. We were told about another market on Massachusetts Ave last year when we came, but it was one of those older, high priced ones with limited items. I was so excited to find Star Market. As the others have stated in their reviews, It had very few people shopping (how nice though, right!!) and everyone I asked for help was very eager to be of assistance. read more

I'm a regular customer here but only because it's right next to my house. The service is poor and the policies are unclear and seem subject to the whim of the staff on shift. For example, a month ago I able to exchange a bill for $10 in quarters. Two weeks ago I was told that they could now only exchange $3 in quarters. Today I was told that they are unable to exchange cash for quarters. What is the official policy? Or does it change weekly? read more

Conveniently located for the Beacon Street neighborhood residents who would rather not go to Porter Square, not crowded, but prices are often too high (go to Market Basket on Somerville Ave instead if you can) but not as high as Whole Foods Market (also located on Beacon Street towards Inman Square)... not sure about Trader Joe's prices, though both of the latter places have much healthier food overall. For exotic (Asian) stuff, go to H Mart in Harvard Square, Reliable Market in Inman Square, or C Mart at South Station, Boston. read more

Okay, I would be remiss in not mentioning Lydia before I go on to say anything about the store. Lydia is the best (or maybe only good) part of going to this store. She is the best - not sure what her story is but if I see her on register, I will go in her line no matter how much longer I have to wait. She is incredibly meticulous about positioning everything in your bag PERFECTLY and then ties them shut. If she was into video games, she'd be a tetris champion. Now, about the store itself, it's the twilight zone. There are rarely employees anywhere but the front of the store, the selection is incredibly lackluster and the whole experience is just downright depressing. Also, their parking lot is generally a disaster zone with trash, broken glass and potholes galore. I also have been in there several times where I wonder how sanitary the meat or produce sections are. It's a shame because the store is SO close and it's SO much cheaper than the Whole Foods Market down the street. The savings just aren't worth it. read more

I lived pretty much on the other side of the commuter rail tracks from this store so I'd stop here if there were good deals in their weekly flyer for some item or if I was looking for something that Market Basket doesn't carry. Shaw's and Star Market have the same ownership, so you'll see the same items for the same prices (which are definitely generally higher than Market Basket). However the feel of this store and the Shaw's at Porter Square are completely different. Star Market is a bit smaller (so if you're looking for a less common specialty product, you're probably better off heading to Shaw's since they may not have it here). It's a little less slick and fancy than Shaw's too. But it feels so much more like a small-town supermarket than anything else you'll find nearby. Employees are generally extremely friendly and will chat with you as you check out. It's definitely got the feeling of a neighborhood store. How they manage to stay open, given how few customers there seem to be, is anyone's guess (my money's on it being a mafia front, but that's my explanation for everything). Helpful hint: to the left of the store as you're facing it, there's a walkway that goes under the railroad tracks. Very handy if you're living on/around Somerville Ave and want to do some shopping here. read more

I've stopped going to the Star at Porter Square lately unless it's a "grocery emergency" because it's just always so. damn. crowded. They literally don't have enough baskets and carts for everyone to use at one time, and it can be a half-hour to check out, even in the express lane. What gives? Enter: Star Market Beacon Street, which is literally three-quarters of a mile away. It's Star Porter's forgotten, more lightly renovated stepsister. While it seems to be getting a little more foot traffic from defectors as the crowd situation at its counterpart gets more and more out of hand, you could probably still ballroom dance through the aisles unencumbered if you really wanted to. And there's a reason for that. The produce here sits longer since the turnover isn't as fast-- my arugula went smelly and brown just a few days after purchase (compared with 1 week+ at the Porter Square Star or Market Basket). The selection just isn't as good as other grocery stores, with a very limited bakery section and not much in the way of yogurt/dairy or meat. The one exception seems to be the "organic" packaged foods section, where I've found a few spices and teas and snacks I haven't seen elsewhere-- and there's no crowd, to boot! Contrary to popular belief, there is often a line at this Star Market, albeit not nearly as daunting as the ones up the street. It seems to be chronically understaffed, so don't expect more than a few lanes to be open at once. read more

So appreciative for the help I got today!! I was in a pinch and customer service really stepped up to think outside the box and help me get what I needed. Thank you to the woman working on 1/5/13 at customer service!! I appreciate Star Market hiring friendly and helpful employees! read more

Great in every way, just deducting 1 star for the fact that yes, the produce section is not that great, and for the way I have to sneak past that lady who runs the register at the end, since she creeps me out a little bit. This place is conveniently located for the area. It's great that there is a parking lot. That's where the good stops. It's so awkward, small and unorganized. And..... I know Brookline passed a no plastic bag law (which is a change I support btw) But charging 10 cents a bag is ridiculous. Up a couple of your prices by a penny to pay for paper bags for your customers. It's a great idea to bring your own bag but if forgotten or running in for something your shoppers shouldn't be penalized. It's dumb and it's bad customer service all around. Don't worry though, I won't be back. read more

I only give 3 stars because it's so close to my apartment and it is NEVER crowded. Being able to run over there for an ingredient or when you run out of milk or something is amazing. If it weren't for the close proximity, I would probably never set foot here. The prices are the same as Shaw's, which, on average, are at least 30-40% higher than Market Basket. It smells kind of funky and I'm not a fan of the staff. The selection is ok, but the items are never as fresh as MB because there's not as much turnover. read more
