LOVE this Asian supermarket! I got to purchase my Ovaltine and Hup Seng Cream Crackers (these are square and savory, and have the consistency like a Ritz cracker). All of the fresh produce and fruit are at the entrance. They have a lot of tropical fruit, which is awesome - rambutan, mangosteen, lychee, longan, jackfruit, and durian. One of the things that stood out was their huge selection of Lays potato chips with Asian flavor profiles. That was fun to walk through. The thing that brought a smile to my face is that they have Schweppes Cream Soda! I can only find this at a Chinese grocery store. Usually, they charge about $3 a can, but here, it's only $1.79! It's one of my favorite sodas that I drank all the time when I visited Hong Kong during summer break. If I lived closer, this would definitely be a regular spot for me. read more

I went in looking for water chestnuts. The aisles were marked so I had an idea where to look. I found them after looking for a few minutes. I picked up three cans. I might as well stock up while I was there. I was there first in the morning so parking was not as issue. They have their own lot anyway. They did have a selection of egg and rice noodles. All the meat I bought was smelly. The packing date was 1/8/2024 and 1/9/2025 and good until 1/12/2025. But they are not fresh at all. They put all the veggies in bags. They hide the yellow leaves in the middle so you won't be able to know they are bad. When I opened a bag I have to throw away 1/3 of the leaves. I will never go back to this market again. read more

I have a theory. This place has three stars because people that review it come here and buy oranges and are like "whaaaat why are the oranges I bought from the Asian supermarket with the giant fish butchery section bad?" My general rule is if something is hard to find in a grocery, it is not good at that grocery. The reverse is also true. Easy things to find at Super 88: every mushroom imaginable, veggies of all shapes and sizes, fish I've never heard of. And all those things are incredible, cheap and really the main reasons to go. Rice, noodles, dumplings, etc, get them and go back to Star Market for your oranges, you savages. The fish section here is pretty rad, pick your fish, alive or dead and they'll kill it again for you, cut it up however you want it and even let you keep the head even though you're a white guy and they doubt you know what to do with it. I don't, but I want it anyway. So come for the vegetables. Stay for the fish heads. read more

Nice that this version of Hong Kong Supermarket outside of Boston has a large parking lot, a large selection of vegetables (even more than the Allston version) and many aisles of sauces and oils. The veggies were fairly fresh, but you have to eat them within 3-4 days of shopping, otherwise they get yellowed in your fridge. The meat section has a decent supply, though the ground pork I got seemed a bit dank (just the slightest bit). The 'wife cakes' in packages were a disappointment - entirely solid or stale. Great flavor, but needs to be cycled out more frequently (or simply not sold). The fish section seemed to have a number of fish tanks inoperable, leaving only the frozen fish available for purchase. The princing labels need to be clearer - I missed out on an opportunity to purchase a buy one / get one free item because it wasn't labelled as such (only learned of it when I viewed receipt afterward). The operations of this store could be improved, but ultimately it's good that these items are available for purchase in the Boston area. Ranch 99 it is not (Cali knows what I'm talking about) but we'll get there!!! read more

The great thing is the variety of kitchenware you can find. Produce is pretty cheap but looks bad. The vegetable were wrinkled (like when you leave you hand under water for too long) Smells awful due to fish and all sorts of meat. Cleanliness is there. I probably would really go there for vegetables. I'm sure there's a reason for people going there. To get specific vegetables and kitchenware etc. but for me personally there are better Asian markets that I could go to. read more

Yes, it never smells all that pleasant when you immediately walk in the door. This isn't your Grandma's all-American grocery store chain and it has never tried to be. They are here to cater to the very needs of the ever-growing Asian population of Malden and they succeed at it quite nicely. There are countless times I've walked in the door and been amazed at all of the pickled items, the exotic parts of an animal I could cook at home (if I knew how to) and the wide variety of fish. My favorite part of the store is getting a Tilapia, freshly killed in store, for less than $8 that we can make at home whole. I did have a bad experience once with the mussels being bad in the seafood section but everything else has been fresh. I wasn't even that upset about the mussels when I spent $2 on a pound and a half to begin with. It's the best place to pick up all of your Asian cooking staples like sesame oil, fish sauce, soy sauce, a vast selection of noodles and everything in between. Go on, compare the prices to your local Stop N Shop, they will be HALF of what you'd pay there. Tofu packages for a $1?? UNREAL! The produce area can be hit or miss and I get confused by some of their specials. Are your limes this week 10 for $1 because they are going bad? Why is most of it dirt cheap and just a hair more than what I could pay at Haymarket?? Still never had an issue with the produce, it just makes me a tad bit leery. The selection of choys is freaking incredible and it has become one of my favorite veggies because of this, I believe I've now tried six different types which I'm quite proud of. Don't be skeered, I'm as white as they come and I've learned to navigate my way around the store on my own just fine. All signs are in English and prices are clearly marked. Holy Crap, this place is monstrous! This was the first time I came to this new location (old location was on Eastern Ave Malden) and I could not believe how big this store is. I was first taken aback as to the entire block has changed. There is a new entire plaza. The old hardware store is still there but again is all changed. Once in the store I was amazed by the huge produce section. Awesome herbs and fresh vegetables. The have a hot buffet bar, hot ducklings a-hang-in, bakery, rice world (entire isle of rice) and also a huge fish market with real live fish, clams, squid, and other semi scary swimables. My purchases: Mango pudding, ramon soup bowls, soy sauce, gummy candy, star anise, frozen lemon grass, and some Chinese New Year decorations. I found the market to be clean, well stocked, and very crowded. read more

There's a lot of good and and lot of bad about this place. The produce area is just bad. A lot of the stuff is in pretty bad shape so I avoid the produce as much as possible. Their meat selection is actually quite nice and the pricing is competitive against some of the bigger grocers in the area. I like to buy their rock crabs but they tend to want to pick out the ones for you (even before covid) and I believe they go out of their way to pick the bad ones for me. Every time I get home, I cook it up and it's mostly the ones with the almost hollow insides, full of water. I can tell the difference if I handle it myself on site but they don't let me. So i know they're doing it on purpose so I've stopped doing anything where they handle the foods and won't allow me to. The biggest highlight about this place is their little food court. It opens early enough where I can get some good authentic asian hot meals in the early hours and it's not too bad or pricey to boot. They are also pretty nice people, unlike the people at the registers in the main store. I come here mostly for the food courts. Another highlight is their non perishables. They have a huge selection of dried and pre packaged goods and though they can be pricey, you won't find these items anywhere else in the area. There is no need want for parking because there is such a huge lot outside so that's always a huge plus. This place has a lot going for it but the glaring negatives keeps me from coming here more often read more

I come here sometimes to go grocery shopping. It's the closest Asian supermarket from our house. It has pretty good selection of veggies and fish which I like but the people doesn't speak English especially at the fish area. It's so frustrating and they make you wait forever. They don't even look at you when you're trying to get their attention. Too bad I don't speak Chinese but atleast look at me. I'm still a costumer after all. read more

So, first of, this place is typical of what you know of a Chinese supermarket: chaotic, products stacked on top of each other, disorganized, etc. It isn't much to look at because ambiance and order is lacking. But shopping at a Chinese supermarket means looking for Chinese goods and products. I am always happy to see any Chinese market in my travels. Honestly, this place is a gem if you're looking to cook real Asian food at home. Sometimes its hard to find particular ingredients and this place is bound to have it. It's a really great place to shop for different types of veggies that you wouldn't typically find at a big corporation market, like stop&shop or MB. They have a great selection of meats, you can really find any piece of the animal here! My absolute favorite part of the Super 88 Market is the fish market area!! Great pricing for seafood- I'm a huge fan! The men behind the fish counter are always friendly. The only thing is that when its busy, you really have to push yourself to the front to have your order taken or else you'll never get a chance! So be assertive! Really poor quality items. I came here to pick up a few items and bought two Asian brooms. I grew up with these brooms my entire life, but the ones I bought here are the worst quality I have ever experienced. They constantly shed. I swept my room twice today and am shocked by the amount of dirt that I saw (even though I just vacuumed yesterday). I realized that what I thought was dirt was actually debris from the brooms. While this place has a good selection of things, the smell here is unbearable. When I visited this place awhile ago, it was ok. But a recent visit changed my mind. I literally gagged and had to leave, I'm Not exaggerating. I know for a fact that items in the refrigerated section are not even close to being kept at the right temperature, very dangerous. I once bought heavy cream and it was solidified, nasty. The clerks here have a nasty attitude as well. I'll be gladly reporting them to the health department. read more

I've been here enough to finally decide on this 1 star verdict: the products are expired - make sure to check the expiration date because they do not allow any return! The veggies are rotten so make sure you check thoroughly. This includes onion, tomatoes and mushroom. Sometimes, you come home and end up with moldy produce. One important thing to note is there is no seafood or poultry / meat section. There is only frozen meat from god knows when. Bad unfresh veggies, frozen outdated meat, this leaves you with the canned goods and other products which either don't have expiration or already expired. Would you still want to shop here? We go here for Asian ingredients and some frozen fruits and delights. They also have unusual cuts of meat and fish and poultry. Don't look for the produce and items that you can find at Stop & Shop - those might not be as fresh or cheap here. But if you are looking for Thai Basil, the spicy red chili peppers, durian, jackfruit, many kinds of tofu (sweet tofu pudding as well as the savory tofus), fresh lobster, fresh scallops, fresh fish, Japanese unagi or milk fish, mochi ice cream or all sorts of Korean and Japanese and Chinese treats, come here! We find fruits and vegetables and spices for Southeast Asian (Thai, Filipino, Vietnamese) and Korean and Chinese and Japanese dishes. Fresh bittermelon? Asian eggplant? Upgrade --- I hadn't been going to this supermarket in a year or two as the produce always was terrible (and Nancy Z. still observed just six weeks earlier --- everything is rotten). But something must have happened. All produce was fresh. The market is much cleaner than ever before. It's great to have a Asian supermarket in the neighborhood. You can't buy the headcheese for homemade banh mi sandwiches at the nearby Stop & Shop. Now, the produce is often times cheaper than Stop & Shop, BUT it will expire sooner. If I was shopping for tonight or tomorrow night's dinner, I'll come here first and get the deals, but if I'm shopping for the week, it's S&S. Now this place earns it's 1.5 stars because the prices are often wrong. About 80% of the time I come here, some price is wrong on the items I purchase. Most often, it's the items that are on sale. The register will ring up the original price. Often time, it's a difference of 10-20 cents, so you don't notice as much. Now, I don't know if they are just lazy and don't update the sale prices in the computers or they are actively trying to rip people off. After my numerous experiences and talking with people who also shop there, I think they are out to rip people off. Worst of all, each time I point out that the price is wrong, the lady at the register acts like I'm trying to pull a fast one and then they get someone else to do a price check, which involves someone from another register walking slowly over the the area where the item is. It's 3 minutes before they get back to verify my claim. By then, I've pointed out a second item and we repeat. All I'm saying is that if you shop here, keep a running total on your smartphone or go old school with a pad of paper. read more

They're not even worth the 1 Star I have to give them! We go on an annual fishing trip & this place is the only place that will clean & cut your fish! This year we caught an abundance of fish! After they serviced 2 of my friends they had the rest of us wait for 2 hours before they told us they wouldn't clean anymore fish for us! They don't speak English so it actually took longer after trying to find someone who did speak enough English to help us! We dumped all of our ice because we thought they were going to service us which put us in a dilemma because we're talking about 30-40 fish; to find out we're stuck with the fish not cut/cleaned! A lot of expired food there! My fault that i did not check the expiration date on the snacks, but it was expired for over 3 months! Did no one notice? I went in for a return but the cashier rudely said, "Well you should have checked the date first." What??? So does that mean they take advantage of people who doesnt or doesnt know how to check expiration dates? Woah, 88 Food court got a revamp. The tables look new and the place isn't as grungy. The market itself got a reworked too. Now with a dedicated beauty and health area and the checkout lines shifted. So much cleaner and with much better circulation. Tons of new product that scream mainland China takeover. It has a parking lot! Super great! Whole corner of just snack foods like chips/cookies/crackers/moys/dried fruit, another whole corner of noodles. Yay! But why are they putting all those shelf stable Korean sauces in the refrigerator section? Are they trying to cover up some supply chain shortages? The store in general will have what you need, but you have to get past the fact that they've used the main entrance as a loading dock area and so it is dirty and all the floor tiles are busted. There's a food court that is strangely unlit and often has just one or two businesses. Today I saw Kung Fu Tea (decent!) and KimchiPapa has an outlet there just for corndogs and mochi donuts (so hipster!) a Pho/ Banh Mi place and a BBQ place for roast pork/duck over rice. Light up the food court! Use a string of Christmas lights if you have to. Replace the tiles and the busted 88 sign. Get a real loading dock area and a floor cleaner. No one was moving the carts or handbaskets back to the entrance so everyone was just shopping with their arms loaded up. You'll sell more if people aren't limited to what they can carry. And why was there an empty cardboard box over half of Cash Register 1's belt? To force you to hold your 25 lb bag of rice for 5 more minutes until the guy in front of you finishes checking out? Small fixes would make a big difference. read more

The sign still says Super 88, but the bags and the receipt say Hong Kong Supermarket. I guess they're in that awkward transitional stage. Their Facebook status would definitely be "It's Complicated." So much improved from the previous incarnation. The cash registers talk and sound like hot lady Daleks, there's fake elephant heads above a wall of rice bags, and there's a certain overall sense that baby done cleaned up for the ball. The produce section was very well stocked, while the quality is a bit off in same cases. Some deals to be found, but not enough that I'd come here for produce exclusively. But completely worth a visit for cheap as chips herbs and Asian fruit and veg. As for the rest of the store, each aisle is now better organized and the shelves are slap full of the Super 88 usual and newly stocked product. What shall I scoop up here today... "Muscle soothing" tea with the photo of a half naked cowboy on the box? Well hay dere. Organic soy sauce? How next level of you! Tofu block for a buck? I'll take two! Imposing pile of sunny takuan? This was one of my favorite places on earth when I'm in the Malden area; what happened! Truly has an amazing variety of eastern delicacies, snacks, produce and foods. The place always and will forever smell like fish; thanks to the massive aquariums they have in the back. The quality of their foods have been strangely off lately and their stock of certain teas and rices disappeared! Major bummer-- considering it's a hassle to find those brands else where. The staff is quite uninterested, very unfriendly, most don't speak a word of English so I can't really fault them. They rearranged some of their shelves very confusingly; wish they could've kept it as is. The bakery's buns used to be amazing, now they taste quite horrible actually; maybe I just got very unlucky. There's more than one location and you can just look it up on the website. The one Ellen and I go to is located in Malden. I love this place. For one, I love different kinds of food. They have sorts of things. I'm a big fan of the freeze dried fish stuff. But they have a plethora of food to go through. It's a typical grocery store, but it smells like the aquarium. So if you're not big on seafood it would be best to steer clear from this place. Usually Ellen will get the Soup Bowls. It's sort of like Ramen but it's in a bowl and they have all these sea food flavors such as, shrimp, lobster, and sea food. Most of them are spicy, which is what I like. If we can we'll get a couple eel fillets. (DONT KNOCK IT THEYRE GREAT!) As I mentioned before it's a great place for finding "different food" but it has your typical groceries to purchase. They got gatorade and soda and all that jazz, but where else would you find octopus jerky? YUM! 5 stars. read more

The last time I went to Super 88 / Hong Kong Supermarket was about 6 months ago. Maybe things have changed since then. This is the largest Asian grocery food store in the area. I think the next closest big box store is H-Mart in Burlington. There is no comparison between the two though. H-Mart is bright, super clean, staffed with English speakers, but is pricey. This store is dingy, feels dirty, and smells of ammonia in certain aisles, but the prices are hard to beat anywhere. Unfortunately, the last 2 times I went the fresh food was useless unless you were going to use it that day. Some items were rotting right on the displays, and I've heard this is has been an ongoing problem here for a very long time... If I lived next door, I guess I wouldn't mind as much as I could walk over and get what I needed for the day, but if you want your food to last more than 2 days, or you don't want to risk getting bad food, you're gonna need to pay the higher prices at nearby Stop n Shop. read more
