bought 2 lobsters. One lobster with only one claw. The staff picked those for me. Be careful about those items.

    Fresh Fish Paste 2/2016

Out of convenience, my parents may do their grocery shopping here at Ming's Supermarket, sometimes sharing one of their prepared foods rice plates for lunch first before hitting the aisles. When I had to pick up some balls as my contribution for a hot pot get together, my mom suggested I head over here. In the freezer section I found balls of beef, fish, shrimp, but the one that caught my eye as something a bit different was the curious sounding Fish Pudding balls $3.59. Funny enough, it turned out to be a favorite of one of my hot pot companions - fish balls with a meat center - and I found them quite tasty myself! The shrimp balls $2.49 were satisfying as well. Their ball portions came in counts of perhaps 12-20 balls which was perfect for our small party of 6! Remembering the fish noodles from Kaze Shabu Shabu, I took a walk through the raw area of the market and managed to find Fresh Fish Paste $4.29/lb in the refrigerated section by the prepared foods counter, plastic wrapped in a styrofoam tray. We spooned this into plastic ziplock bags, cut out the corner tip and squeezed it into the hot broth. Yum! Another hot pot companion happily identified the fish paste as having been made with her favorite fish - one with tiny delicate digestible bones - and wanted to know where I had bought it. I later found out that the fish paste my mom buys are found in plastic tubes in the freezer section - yeah, that wouldn't have worked for same day consumption... I lucked out finding this fresh stuff! I was tipped off during the our hot pot meal that Jia Ho Supermarket, located rather centrally below Emperor/Empire Garden, has the freshest meat in Chinatown, my guess being that their more convenient location keeps things moving. And rumor has it that H Mart may offer a greater variety of hot pot meat balls, both in larger bags, and in a pick your own bin for not much more money.

    a stack of surgical masks

An asian market that has been around for quite some time, you would think they would conduct business with ethics. I now have doubts...a month ago, my dad was scammed by them when they were selling one time use medical masks at ridiculous price of $80 for a box of 50 masks. When my dad got home the same day, he opened up a loosely taped up box to check for quality and noticed that those masks were only in a ziploc bag, not in airtight packaging you would see if it came from the manufacturer. Due to the current situation, who knows if that is safe for anyone to use because for 1.) the owners of the market could have packaged it themselves from wholesale and sell for profit and 2.) how would one know what cautions/steps they took to package them correctly without contaminating the masks! So the very next day, my dad took the box of masks back to the store to complain and ask for a refund. Of course the market would not accept due to current health concerns but come on! Don't sell to consumer by saying it's straight from the manufacturer when it is DEFINITELY NOT! I urge people to consider going to other asian markets because clearly, the owners are not very ethical. There are plenty of other asian groceries around the area that is worth your business and loyalty.

Just 1/3 of the fresh seafood selection

The biggest Asian supermarket I've seen in Boston so far (not that I've been to that many)! The outside looks dingy but inside, it's like an entire universe of unexplored taste bud heaven. HUGE huge selection of snacks, dried products (nuts, grains, beans), noodles, fresh meat and seafood (awesome selection!!) and fresh produce. Prices are really fair and they even have their own big parking lot next door!! I like that this place is quite clean, especially the wet seafood area. Expect a ton of people on the weekends that you have to squeeze by. THis place also has ready cooked food for $5.75 + tax (you pick 3 dishes) with rice and soup that you can eat at the tables there. If you're non-Chinese and have never been to a Chinese grocery store In America (the ones in Asia a whole lot cleaner, trust me) then you may be a little off-put by the CROWDS of people and tight isles, but you'll come to love all the fresh produce and meat selection!!!

I had read a few reviews of Ming's before on Yelp and had passed it regularly when I was leaving work so I was excited to finally check out the South End Asian grocery store with my boyfriend. When we came in this past Friday afternoon, the store was not crowded. This gave us the opportunity to explore the supermarket's offerings which ranged from housewares to fresh fish to herbal medicines. I found items to be very reasonably priced, and what's more impressive is the wide range of products arranged neatly and in clearly labeled aisles. Most workers appear to be speaking Cantonese, but I think they will speak to you in Mandarin as well. I also found the number of check out lanes to be another plus.

Duck tongues...who knew they'd be so expensive!

Ming's is our go-to Asian supermarket in the Boston area. Yes it's crazy and crowded on weekends, but once you get into the spirit of things, it's fun. For out-of-towners like ourselves, it has several advantages. First, it's located outside the main part of Chinatown, making both access and parking a lot easier. Secondly, for American sensibilities, Ming's is cleaner and doesn't smell like rancid anchovies and day-old fish. They've got everything that you will need, whether fresh, frozen or packaged, and their prices are highly competitive (often cheaper than their competitors). Quality of fish looks very good. I've always been happy with their produce. And even their meats look pretty fresh. Also a good place to pick up inexpensive cooking tools and Asian housewares.

I think it is cleaner, has a nicer staff, and has a greater selection than C-Mart, Jia Ho, etc.

I lucky spotted a door open at the bottom of a long set of stairs. To my surprise there were people hustling and bustling below. I also saw a bunch of boxes and decided to take a quick closer peek at what was going on below street level. I ventured down a few steps and to my surprise saw a full blown old fashion Asian Apothecary store complete with an older woman behind a counter mixing multiple herbs and dried roots and wrapping them in brown paper. The store was impressive with the high quality of the Apothecary here, from ginseng roots and extracts to 50 lb bags of miscellaneous dried mushrooms to lotus flowers etc. I purchased some Korean Ginseng Tea at a very reasonable price. This is a great find, next time I will inquire if they have any Goji Berry products or Lingzhi Mushrooms which are somewhat difficult finds. I give Kok Wa Co a Solid 4 Stars. I may have gone up to 5 if I could have communicated with them.
