My company ordered some platter from Stop & Shop for a Townhall we were holding in Somerville. to my surprise, platters were fabulous. we had about 30 men and only spent about $300 to feed everybody, actually, we had too much food. we ordered four platters of sandwiches some wraps and some on sub rolls that were cut obviously for a platter. we also had fruit trays and vegetable trays three of each. All the platters looked fabulous. The sandwiches were actually stuffed with meat and cheese and vegetables. As for the fruit and the veggies, the platter with super fresh. I think I found my new place to go for inexpensive big platters. They're worth every penny. The great thing about being at Stop & Shop picking up these platters we also were able to get a bunch of sodas, plates, plastic knives, and forks, etc. one stop shopping. As with All stopping shops, they have a large parking lot so parking is not a problem. I'm not sure of the cleanliness of the store as I did not enter. They were ordered on the phone and others picked up the platters. But all the Stop & Shop that I have gone in uphold a supermarket cleanliness. Anyway, I would definitely suggest if you want to get a platter for $30 or $40 or $50 to feed a few friends during a football game or a family get together. This is the place. read more

Bought 2 cakes today for a Birthday party , both cakes were old and stale. I asked the baker if the cakes were fresh "Oh yeah" he said. This stop n shop is the worst. Selling old , stale moldy cakes, this store should just close down before they kill someone . These cakes were so over priced. I hope my daughter doesn't get food poisoning. This store has the worst produce I've ever seen!! Not only is the selection VERY scarce, but the quality is down-right pathetic! Produce that is wilted, yellowing, dried out, and often lacking in availability on those messy shelves. It's amazing to me how the most important foods (fresh greens and vegetables) are absolutely abominable here. I've complained to the manager at one time, who told me that he was sorry and that they were going to vamp up their produce section (not true), and it's still just as bad as it was back then - for years! And their prices are not cheap for the cheap quality that they offer. Market Basket has a MUCH greater variety, better prices, and better quality foods. S&S you should really be ashamed of yourselves and fix this problem. read more

My 300th Yelp review is of my grocery store. I am so, so lame. But hey, I guess it goes to show you what happens when you find a great supermarket. The Super Stop and Shop on the McGrath is conveniently located (a minute from I-93, two minutes from the East Somerville sign on Broadway), has abundant parking, and is never overly crowded. Comparing the reviews of this Stop and Shop to other local grocery stores shows that this place just seems to do it better. This is a massive grocery store, well-stocked across cuisine ethnicities, and with ample produce and prepared food sections. On top of that, Stop and Shop carries a wonderful selection of Nature's Promise turkey, chicken and pork that would be worth the trip by itself. The Nature's Promise brand, of note, is a nice low-price alternative to the organics you can get at Whole Foods. One last competitive advantage that this place has are the handheld scanners that allow you to check out groceries as you shop. It has saved me a tremendous amount of time and aggravation, as standing in a cashier's line is the stuff of nightmares. Good on you, Stop and Shop. read more

This store always appears short staffed. The deli counter is slower than molasses. I've heard employees curse in front of my kid as they talk to one another- oblivious that families may be shopping. This Stop & Shop reminds me of the one @ South Bay, but it's much, much cleaner. It looks brand new! This store management is extremely disturbing. I agree with these reviews with 3 stars bc it's true that most of the individuals that work there are great at what they do. The deli, seafood & meat etc are awesome. I switched banks to Citizens bc it's more convenient but I've gone back to the BOA bc their ATM etc is right next to customer service (another place to avoid like the plague). That speaks volumes about the sketchy management. SMH it's darn near impossible to get worse than than that bank. This being said, I've personally witnessed one of the (four)managers become verbally abusive and act in a threatening manner. I contacted their corporate office with specific details by email but "Ethics division" at the corporate office in Quincy as yet to address. They have obviously not reviewed the video of the incident that occurred at the most heavily trafficked area in the store-at the entrance next to the DD located in the store. Ppl with nothing to hide, hide nothing. They either don't have the ability to properly keep the public safe via their "surveillance cameras" or they've seen it and it's not up for debate. Couple that with the old saying "The hand of one is the hand of all" and what we've got here is basically any encounter with that store is a crap shoot. We've got a better chance at Encore than this Stop and Shop. I quickly learned how to use the self-check out in another attempt to avoid the manager by any means necessary. It would be a lot easier if he wasn't creepy and scary. He uses his physical size, especially his girth to intimidate ppl. It always stuck in my crawl thinking back to the employee strike. Not bc the employees/union went on strike bc that's probably the only way to get through to this kind of holier than though they've got going on. It's the fact that I clearly remember trying shop for Easter/Passover dinner but to do so I had to cross the picket lines and that didn't feel right so I just bought the kosher basics and my family had the worst Passover dinner I've ever made. This was the best grocery store I've been to in the area. Although it wasn't fully stocked, the prices are a lot cheaper than some of the area stores. After shopping at this Stop & Shop location I have to say that I have many thoughts about the overall experience. After thinking about what I wanted to say about this store I realized that my overall experience was negative with one redeeming moment which is the only reason I bumped it to two stars. To sum up my experience, here at the things you need to know; 1. Finding this Stop & Shop is a nightmare if you aren't from the area and are not coming from a "convenient" direction. 2. The parking lot is a mess and I almost got hit multiple time both in my car as well as walking through the lot. 3. When I called the floral department on the phone I got a lackluster response about ordering a nice bouquet of flowers and eventually told the employee that I would just stop in and buy a prior made one since she was "too busy." When I arrived, there were no employees in the floral department. 4. The check-out lines were a mess, there weren't enough open aisles and the cashier I had was rude. Now the only pros I could put together were the fact that the prior made bouquets were beautiful and the prices were decent. read more

I've always had a gut feeling - though I doubt I'll ever be able to prove it - that Stop & Shop's prices at their stores in New York are slightly higher to allow their prices to be lower and more competitive in Massachusetts, particularly Boston. It felt like, when I walked into this particular store, I found one of those "more competitive" stores. I'm not a huge fan of the chain, but I liked this store. Its in a good location, for one thing - easy off/on I-93. Parking was very convenient. The store itself is very basic - no frills, not a lot of space devoted to high-end stations, just honest-to-goodness groceries. I was impressed by the variety, but even more so by the prices. I kept saying to myself, "Are you sure this is a Stop & Shop?" They also had quite a few self-serve checkout stands open, more than I've typically seen at similar stores. My stop here this evening happened to be one of convenience while passing through. If I lived in the area, I'd definitely shop here. read more

The deli department manages to surprise me every time. I've gotten a pound of provolone sliced so thin, it was almost like it was shaved all because the person before me ordered whatever paper thin and the person couldn't bother to change the thickness. Today I was surprised with this in my sliced cheese. Why on earth this did end up in the trash is beyond me, but to include it is just poor judgement/ customer service which is the norm most of the time. And while the steak tips can be a great deal when they are on sale, they seem to "forget" their butchering skills when the price drops. read more

Moved to the area about a year ago. Been going here at least once a month. I started going early in the morning cus some people hang out front and ask me for food. They got self check out. They play some good 80s music. They got one of those creepy machines on wheels that rolls around and beeps and it has eyes. Good vegan selection of cheeses, tofu and milks. Discount shelves are in the back. I miss going here. I haven't been back since covid19 showed up and i heard they were doing some one way isle thing. Also i heard that seniors are priority when they first open. Sometimes there is a police car in the lot which i like and also helps when walking through from Assembly row. And sometimes they got handles on the paper bags and sometimes they don't. read more

This store is so close to my house, it's hard not to come in and grab a quick something I ran out of like oil, cilantro, bell peppers, cooking wine... I cook mostly vegan and this is not the place to find veggie friendly items. Though there's the 'weird aisle' (as my partner calls it) at the other end of the store where the lights flicker and no one's ever been. You can find some very basic things, but no vegenaise, tofu or other meat alternatives, nutritional yeast, etc. I only bake vegan goods and mostly use ingredients of high quality and those can't be found here (try Harvest Co-op or Christina's Spices). I don't even get the vanilla extract. They have parchment paper , all-purpose flour and cute liners at decent prices. The produce section is weird. Sometimes I walk in there and they don't have any produce. I mean almost nothing, but some onions. I've come in for fresh herbs and have found none. I've come in for easy to find produce like garlic, jalapenos, bell peppers, etc. and found none. And if I did find what I needed, it's never really fresh or flavorful like a veggie should be. I really don't know what's wrong with this place. The staff is always extra friendly. read more

This place has been under renovation since 1995. Every time I go in, something has moved. It's like "Poltergeist" but with more boxes of Rotini. Decent music playlist. Grocers are disaffected enough. Overly-friendly sushi guy who has asked me the same three questions since I started going there. There's a really nice woman who works in produce. She hates the place. We commiserate. Also, I feel like I get my daily exercise during my trips. I swear, it's like a half-mile from the eggs to the bakery. There's always weird, cool stuff on discount. You'd never know you needed an industrial size bottle of store brand B-12 supplements until you saw it was 70% off. Now you're happy. All the time. Large and in charge. Prices creeping up just to increase the discount (I continuously save about 20% each time), yet still rewarding. Good job, SSS. The other day, broccoli was only $0.99/lb! but swiped clean off the shelves. The only back-up -- organic -- was over $4/lb. What's the point? Gobbilee goop. I find myself splitting my trips between three different grocery stores because each offers a significantly better deal than the other by 3-5 items. This is strictly Cambridge shopping. So this is one of the newer stop and shop supermarkets in the area, it will be interesting to see if it stays nice when the new one opens down the street at Wellington Circle and the corporate parent shifts focus over there. But for now it is an excellent location with only slightly sketchy parking and a very diverse clientele. Weird location for the milk and dairy. But not the worst way it could be laid out. I only go here when I need a thing or two because it's convenient. I keep telling myself I will never go back. 1. Having 2 registers open in the middle of the day when each line has ~7 people is ridiculous!!!! I refuse to use the stupid self scanner thing because it never works for produce. 2. I found GREEN, moldy pita bread and brought it to the register when I was paying to tell the cashier. He said "do you still want it?" I said no, it's moldy! And then he frigging SCANNED the moldy pita bread and gave it to the bagger!! I said no I don't want that!!! 3. Why do you have the stupidest bags with no handles?? What kind of idiot thought that was a good idea? Paper is fine, but get bags with handles. 4. This store is dirty and gross. It needs to have to board of health sent there. 5. The employees couldn't care less about their jobs and all complain about how hard they work yet most of them are texting while you're at the register. The prices are good if you participate in their rewards program, otherwise they are nothing special. The produce is good. The fish is the weakest part of the store: it's not very appealing and lacks variety. This Stop and Shop only gets 2 stars because they USED TO have all natural chicken that went on sale for $1.99/pound and because they have really cheap canned beans. Otherwise, it stinks. They sell stale pasta. Yes, that icky, turns-your-water-cloudy kind of pasta. And then they don't believe you when you bring the empty boxes back to the store and refuse to refund you your money. Yes, I am the kind of consumer who returns food to the supermarket when it is subpar. I have returned produce to Whole Foods, lots of things to Trader Joe's (including stale pasta), and even a red onion to Market Basket, whose produce is usually unparalleled, without raising a to-do. But the asshole behind the service desk at Stop and Shop simply could not be bothered. Also, anyone who has been to Market Basket and witnessed the amazing efficiency and skill of their staff won't be able to stand the rude, painfully slow, unhelpful personnel at S&S. The produce is overpriced. I come in when I see advertized specials upon occasion, like coffee or cake mix, maybe. The baggers hate it when I come in with my own bags. It's like a personal insult or something. I usually just bag the stuff myself quickly and then depart. I used to like this store, though. I even came on opening day and saw some Patriots player signing autographs. I felt so cheerful, the linoleum was so sparkly. I was led on. Just a bunch of the meaner Somerville townies here. None of the community-feel you get at Market Basket. Or even TJ's, which gives me the heebies enough due to the hyper staff and overdone overtures at friendliness. I do like it that they have a damaged goods section for pretty cheap. One time I got Luvs diapers, 90 for 3 bucks. Dented cans of sauerkraut for 5 cents. So, I have this thing where I just drive and once I know one way to get somewhere, I always go that way. Well, I stumbled upon this Stop and Shop more than a year ago, I know how to get to it the one way, and it is not too far from my house in the North End (right?), it has parking, so I go. Well, needless to say I had no idea what town it was in (hello Somerville) until now and it probably is not the closest supermarket to my house, but it works. The place is clean, has food, parking, and the baggers actually don't seem like they want to end their lives in front of you. That's really all I can ask for in a supermarket. This is a.good grocery store for that quick thing you forget to get at all the other stores. The store has a large parking lot, easy access from main road. The staff are very friendly and helpful. I get my bottled water and bread here. The store looks a little run down comparing to their other location. It can definitely use a new face lift. read more

This isn't my "home" location S&S, but its close enough. I frequent this location a lot because I have friends in the area and this is where we go. The parking lot is big which is nice because its busy even when it doesn't look busy. The self-check-out service attendant is spotty, just beware if there is an issue with your check-out, it may take a while. Other than that, check-out is usually a breeze. There are two Redboxes (is that even how you would write that?! HA), which is good because there is always a line over there and I see the need to have more films available than just the one box. The guys at the deli are pretty good, same with seafood. The store is big and the layout is different than my home location so I sometimes get caught off guard looking for stuff because out of habit I think what I am looking for will be where I go, wrong but that's fine no issue there. It's always fairly busy and the location of the store is pretty good, I think it's kind of like an awkward spot when I actually think about it too much but it's also really easy to get to. read more

This particular location has messed up my online order on numerous occasions. Being a newer service, I let it go. Until today, I had taken the time last evening to order groceries for a 12pm pick up, I packed up the baby in the car to head over and realized I never got my invoice, so I called to which they told me my order was cancelled by their system accidentally and I could place an order for 6pm pick up. Seeing i wanted to use my groceries to make dinner prior to 6pm, I asked to speak with a a manager. What terrible customer service! He refused to get on the phone and speak to me, saying there was nothing he could do. Not accommodating at all and I will no longer purchase my groceries from this location. read more

It's very, very big. Very big. I've had trouble finding things here on occasion because of the sheer size of the store. And the sign that I've seen a lot now, where 3 lemons are on sale for $4, cracks me up because that's the worst sale ever. But I do like the bargain aisle. I've gotten dish soap for not too expensive. And their produce is always fresh, even if the price of lemons is absurd. It's still over-all cheaper than Shaw's. Bonus: I appreciate a store that carries decent quality, less expensive, leave-in conditioner for curly hair. I'm talking TRESemme Flawless Curls, Sunsilk Captivating Curls, and Herbal Essences' None of Your Frizzness. See also goat rope Although the ethnic selection isnt as vast, the store is clean, organized, never crouded, and there is plenty of parking. If you are looking for something specific or ethnic, I suggest Market Basket, on Slumerville Ave. But be prepared to deal with screaming children, grocery carts blocking lanes, and family reunions in the center of the produce department. read more

I love this Stop and Shop. Really. It's clean, it's HUGE, it's never TOO crowded. And it has everything. All my favorite natural food items, cheap beans, decent produce, and a great salad/soup/sushi bar. Works for me. The only problem I have with this (and all) Stop and Shops (and it's kind of ridiculous) is when the Self-Check out attendants start bagging your groceries. I usually have a small army of canvas bags in my cart, and these asshats (with all due respect) pull out some plastic bags and start wasting resources. NO THANK YOU. read more

This Stop and Shop has the new "easyShop" scanners. They're pretty nifty, you can scan your stuff while you are shopping. You also get some extra discount offers. This is really great because it keeps a running total of everything in your cart so you can stay on budget without getting to the register and not knowing you went over. read more

Wow, a real, spacious suburban-esque grocery store with plenty of parking right here in the city! I like that this place is never crowded. There's also a Dunkin Donuts inside, should the prospect of walking all those aisles wear you down. They have a Red Box, but it seems like the only thing it ever has is something called Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs. I don't want to find out what that is... it can't be good. The produce selection is decent - much better than the Porter Shaw's but not as good as the Somerville Ave Market Basket. I find it kind of disturbing that they have an "about to go south" rack of prepackaged fruits and vegetables, many of which feature a fuzzy item or two in each package. The fish selection is pretty sad, though they did have $5.99 chicken lobsters recently. The salmon, my most purchased seafood item, usually looks freezer burned. Also, like many supermarkets, Stop & Shop puts the sushi right next to the seafood counter, which makes it less appetizing to buy sushi when there's a fishy smell in the air. Whole Foods puts theirs at the opposite end of the store, and as such, they sell more sushi. I've deducted one star because it seems that Stop & Shop is phasing out my beloved ZAZZ seltzer, and the mandarin orange flavor seems to have not made the cut as they've transitioned to boring "Stop & Shop brand" packaging. I cannot begin to put into words the self-satisfaction I feel when I get to walk past rows upon rows of schmucks standing in line to check out, go to the 'express' lane with a CARTLOAD of groceries, and pay and leave FASTER than the guy in front of me who had three items and paid with cash. Love the 'scan gun' method of shopping. You scan the item, bag it in your shopping cart (buggy) and then scan a barcode above the screen in the self-checkout lane. Scan your shopper's card one more time and you're done. Pay and leave. Also use your card at the deli counter kiosk to order meats/cheeses... walk away and they call your number when it's all done. Grocery-wise, this place is a few steps above Johnny's in Charlestown (read my disgust at the review there) but a couple below Wilson Farms (which I adore, but it's a bit far out for me to 'run to'). Also has a redbox inside, and on NYDay, two minutes after closing, Tardell allowed me to go inside and return my redbox rental, like a true gentleman would. That alone cemented my resolve to use this place over that hellhole in C'town. read more
