Annoyed with consistently being ripped off. I've been shopping at Kurkman's since I was little with my parents. Sad to stop shopping here but prices are very frequently higher at the register than marked on the shelves. I'm also really sick of being rudely spoken to when I question price discrepancies. This change has been apparent for about a year now and I can no longer patronize this business. There are other small, local markets I will shop at instead. read more

What's happened here? There are shelves and shelves of items without any prices, making it really difficult to shop. The at-register look up process is time consuming and awkward, and the resulting high prices sadly suggest some kind of bait and switch at work. Staff are not unpleasant, but this is not the tidy dependable operation it used to be. read more

Kurkman's is ..... Your lifesaver when you need a few things for dinner. You don't need a supermarket when this oasis of necessities is right around the corner. Your lifesaver when you DO go to the supermarket, spend like $100 plus but you forgot things. Your lifesaver when your kid decides he wants an Apple from the market RIGHT NOW since he knows Kurkman's for their delightful produce...it calls to him. Kurkman's is so very much a lifesaver. When we first moved to the neighborhood we were told this place was great and it really is. They may not have EVERYTHING but they have a lot of things. Even stuff for mimosas. I've stopped here numerous times to get a bite to eat, or a drink while I'm on my way from one place to another for work. Sometimes their delivery trucks block the curb cut to the parking lot. This is mostly incredibly obnoxious. There is not much parking on the streets at this intersection, due to bus stops, ecc. What's worse than trying to find a parking spot elsewhere, is waiting for some poor bastard to empty out a pallet of soda so you can get the hell out of the parking lot and go on with your life. Since this place changed hands last - or so it seems, the prices have seemed to go up. The people who work here have always been friendly when I've purchased anything. I wouldn't hesitate to stop in to quench my thirst, but I wouldn't go out of my way to shop here. read more

I called this place to ask if they carry a particular spice because the markets I usually go to said they don't (Trader Joe's and Stop and Shop). This place said they do carry that spice. This is an amazing neighborhood grocery store. The employees are honest, helpful, and hardworking, especially during this Covid-19 crisis. Their meat, veg, and fruit sections are top quality. You'll also be able to find really clutch ingredients for those of you who are interested in preparing dishes from Indian/South Asian cuisine. The other selections are great too. I just moved around the corner from here, and I couldn't be more pleased. You see, I love Trader Joes; however, I do NOT love being run over by shopping carts or trampled by throngs of 85 year olds who scold me in Russian. Kurkman's spares me from having to make regular trips to TJs, and makes me feel high and mighty for supporting local business, to boot. And it's not easy to feel high and mighty as a Brookline novice--high and mighty is like an art here. Anyway, Kurkman's is great. Decent prices, surprisingly large selection, and friendly faces. Hooray! And I'm docking them one star because if I'm going to feel high and mighty properly, I'm going to need a little more organic produce. That's all. :) read more

I never write reviews because most of humanity sucks and a small business shouldn't win or lose based on some fools experience and then they suffer on YELP but... Kurkmans is by far the nicest, most familiar, most convenient of the grocers in this area. In fact I moved here from Manhattan and if your familiar Kurkmans is the twin of Merci Market on 20th street. It's got fresh fruit, you can order a toast or pick up dog food. It's not Stop and Shop but we use Peapod and then pop into Kurkmans probably every other. There beer selection is better than the liquor store across the street (including harder to find IPAS) and their wine selection is plentiful and stocked with even some more hard to find of the varietals. Honestly I hate this city but Kurkmans makes it ok. They're friendly, they remember you when you frequent and the guys that work in there would do anything to help a customer. I saw them last week help an elderly woman out to her car and they packed her up too. I'm sorry but that stuff just doesn't happen in this city and if your in the hood Kurkmans is a gem. It's not open Sunday's but they work hard enough to have earned that day off. I've never seen such a hardworking crew. read more

I'll try not to repeat too much of what others have said, but yes: 1. Support local businesses. 2. Super convenient if you live in the area (though closes a little early, and not open on Sundays). Located on the same corner as a bus stop (60), and it's only about a 5 minute walk from the Brookline Hills stop. 3. Very friendly owners/staff - they seem to know all the locals. 4. Incredible selection for the size of the store. Almost anything you could need, and more. 5. Specials on meat and produce are a life saver when you don't want to trek to Trader Joe's/Stop & Shop (oh, to have a car). Also, not having to lug milk home on two buses is heaven. That said, they only lose a star because I can't really justify spending more on almost all of the non-perishables and a few of the fresh foods (though that's probably because it's all name brands). I'm sure for most people who shop here, the price difference isn't that big of a deal. The good thing is, I can always make a meal from the things here that aren't a little too expensive. Thank god for that. Misc: Credit cards are accepted (there's a $5 minimum). I've never waited in line longer than 5 minutes. If that. According to every law of economics Kurkman's Market should have ceased to exist as a viable entity years ago. It's got a small sales floor, it's located far from any major retailing area, no huge parking lot, few frills and attractions and they never seem to run a sale. OK, but...look at what Kurkman's does offer. That'll not only give a clue as to how they've been around as long as they have, but how similar stores can also make it. For starters, they offer a variety of specialty products at lower prices than higher end retailers. This is in addition to a wide selection of the "necessities," such as milk, bread, and snacks carried by supermarkets and department stores...but much closer to home. They're great for people who live in the neighborhood and who don't own a car. Kurkman's is only one store but they've got a lot of the conveniences found in several stores. Although they've been around for decades (Mom and Nana used to wheel me by here in the stroller) they've never though that good enough is good enough and have always worked to improve their product lines based on the neighborhood's needs. I'm partial to their deli, but they've also provided me with cash, cleaning supplies, and paper goods in a pinch. And service in the store is especially fast ...I've never had to wait more than a few minutes in line, even in the busiest times. Often one sacrifice access to conveniences in order to live in a quiet neighborhood. Kurkman's is the kind of place that makes those sacrifices quite bearble. One of my favorites. read more

Kurkman's was actually a big part of why we chose this neighborhood. I do everything from shopping for whole dinners to just running over and picking up a package of sugar because I ran out and am baking. In the past few years, we go a few times per week. I find that their produce is competitively priced when I compare to Star Market and Trader Joe's. Other things might be a little bit more expensive, but they are a family shop and it is ALWAYS worth not having to drive somewhere. They are closed on Sundays, but it is what makes me love them more - I'm happy that as a small shop they are closed for a day so they all get to rest!! This little market is a huge plus for those of us in the Brookline Hills. I'm always shocked by their reasonably priced meat and produce when I consider that this isn't a chain store. The staff is always friendly, the store is clean, and they have things in stock you wouldn't expect from a small grocer (scallops, toothbrushes, wine, you name it). The only reason I'm docking a star is because of their hours. I leave work on the later side, so it's rare I'll be able to make it there by 7:30 pm to grab salad ingredients before dinner. Also, not being open on Sunday is a real tragedy. Apart from limited hours, Kurkman's is the best and I'll miss having a convenient grocery store when I move to a new neighborhood! read more

Kurkman's is small but mighty- they have everything you need, but far from your average milk and bread. They have a great deli, amazing gourmet cheese selection, crispy delicious daily baked french baguettes, and a variety of other gourmet choices. Weekly produce and meat sales even make it easy to make very affordable meals. You still may need to hit up the larger stores for certain items, but Kurkman's carries just about everything and they even have friendly staff! They pack a lot of options into a relatively small space - this has been a neighborhood store for 100 years - but the stuff they sell is new ;) they have a deli, as well as beer and wine, fresh produce, frozen and cold groceries, cheeses, meat, really almost anything you need lots of prepared items of various kinds, there is a parking lot so perfect for a quick pick-up of a few items and plenty of variety to do a "real shop". Oh, how I love Kurkman's. Years ago, I lived 2 blocks from this place, and it was part of my Boston/Brookline landscape. So convenient to walk home from the T and get the basics. Now that I've moved back to metro Boston after 12 years away, I realize that this place was (and is) something special. Since I've been back, I've stopped in a time or two. It's even better than it was. Updated, convenient, with an ATM and a real deli in the back. It has all the basics, yet it remains small. They have some gourmet items, but they've never fancied it up at the expense of staples (which I so appreciate). I even got real homemade mincemeat before Christmas. It was so wonderful in our mincemeat pies. I'm looking to move from JP back to the part of Brookline just for my love of Kurkman's! read more

If I had only known about their delicacies and high quality foods for reasonable prices, I would have checked in long ago. (I've lived in Brookline 30 years!) A neighborhood treasure. Where else can you pop in and in barely a few minutes fashion a meal or do all your shopping, from a selection in a compact store that ranges from the basics to gourmet. Prices amaze me, in that many items are lower than the chain markets...and certainly well below Whole Pocketbook. Even more amazing is that Kurkman's and WP have the same fruit and vegetable suppliers for many items. And BTW, I have never seen the 50/50 rotten noted earlier. The range of fresh fruit and vegetables may not be as broad as one sees as megamarkets, but space is limited, this is a neighborhood market, and we all understand the tradeoffs. Beyond that, Kurkman's picks up fresh fish from the piers many days, with pricing much less than what one sees at WP. And often fresher by a day! read more

Great for stopping by for simple ingredients you may have forgotten for dinner. Prices are higher than most groceries, but that's expected at a Mom and Pop stop in my opinion. Great little neighborhood market! When I first moved to the Brookline Hills area I was apprehensive about the lack of nearby grocery options, and I always assumed that Kurkman's would be overpriced because of its size and location. Not the case! While I still don't do the bulk of my grocery shopping there, I frequently stop by for fresh fruit/veggies and last-minute ingredients. The staff is great too. My only complaint is that the hours are a bit limited (and they aren't open on Sundays, as of Mar 2013). read more

I bought my 2 family on Prince Street in 1984, and the original family was still running it. Kurkman's Market was great then, and the owners since then have held up the high standards. It is a truly remarkable neighborhood market, and is better than most supermarkets on both quality and price. read more
