Cute market in the North End with a good selection of fresh fruits & vegetables. I don't live in the area, but I can imagine how helpful this little grocery is to those who do. There's a large deli in the back that was closed by the time I stopped in. They have a large selection of fresh foods, cheeses, non-perishables, snacks and juices. I'll be stopping in again in the future to grab a few items that are harder to find. I found my new favorite juice here, called Natalie's Orange Beet juice! Delicious! The woman who worked here was not very friendly but that's Boston. She wasn't outright rude either, but was not interested in small talk. It was also late and they were still open at least. read more

Great local market! There is surprisingly a lot of options here and it's great for a quick stop if you need something to complete your dinner. The prices are a little higher than a regular grocery store but it does the job for last minute items or a small haul! read more

It's fine. With nothing else close by, it'll do, but I just had yet another experience where a food/drink I bought was expired. This happens all the time: Polar seltzers: flat Meatballs: mold Blueberries: mold Ground turkey: expired Part of this is on me for not checking expiration dates/checking for mold like I should, but still, expired things should not be on the shelf so often. In a space the size of a Buick, the good folks at Going Bananas pack in the highest quality, most reasonably priced foodstuff in the North End. Absolutely, hands down. Seasonal smoothies - made to order with fresh fruit, juices and yogurts, a full service deli counter with Boar's Head products and mouthwatering sandwiches half the price of dose udda guyz. Pantry necessities, which is good because the last thing you need is another bag of artisan flatbreads cluttering up the fridge top. Chicken cutlets and sausages, most likely from the butcher right across Salem, made available after he's closed shop. Lunch on the go? Dinner at home? Done. And to be honest, I've never seen a more aesthetically pleasing produce display outside of high end grocery stores. There's a guy who's always restocking, misting and shifting the goods. Focused, proud. Haunting. Touch a deep green head of romaine, you hear a voice behind you whispering "Everything's fresh buddy." You turn around, nobody's there. A breeze blows. I would normally give this place 3, maybe even 4 stars -- they do a decent job considering the costs associated with running a small grocery in the North End. But tonight I went in and the cashier spent time texting instead of ringing me up. Unacceptable, especially with the line behind me. Also they don't carry Tostitos (they must get a good deal on Utz). This place is okay if you're in a pinch but you can't rely on anything being in stock. Also, their hours are reliable either - they say they are open until 9:00pm but I've attempted to go multiple times at 8:45pm and they're already locked up. Their minimums on credit cards change all the time too - seems like it depends on the cashiers mood. It used to be $1 minimum (I bought something for 99 cents), then I was buying something for $1.49 and I was told the minimum was $2. I was so frustrated that I just left. Meh. I live in the N End where we don't have a ton of grocery options. If its something I can't get at Polcari's or CVS I head here. I always use LevelUp to pay and they give you $10 for every $100 that you spend so I feel a bit better knowing I'm saving 10% always and the LevelUp is convenient. That said, a lot of the products don't even have prices on them so its sort of a guessing a game, which is less exciting than it sounds. The employees are fine. No warm fuzzies, but no hate either. Overall I'm glad its there for those situations when I really need something. read more

They recently cancelled level-up effectively slapping loyal customers in the face....can't wait to the grocery to open near North Station (they'll be DONE when they happens next year). I used to love shopping here but without the 10% off with level up (which rendered their prices somewhat reasonable for the convenience factor) I just won't even shop here again. BEST part - when I asked the cashier about level up (to see if it was gone just for the time being or forever)....she said "gone forever - we're going to make so much more money now that we aren't using it" OMG (eyebrow raise). I stopped here on the way to a Celtics game this past weekend (don't get me started on them...; however, this review isn't about them). I must say that they delivered one of the tastiest little prosciutto sandwiches I've ever eaten on this side of the Atlantic (and on a really tasty, perfectly crisp baguette too). Mozzarella was fresh and delicious. Balsamic was just right. This little grocery store is A-OK in my book. (Next on to-do list is to stop by and actually taste one of those banana smoothies...) ***REVISION*** SMOOTHIES = TASTED. Verdict = wowzas! When we asked the guy making them which was best (we couldn't decide between mango and strawberry/banana), the teenager behind the counter suggested that we get an s&b with a hint of mango (he was right). Spoiled food at this place all the time. I buy a few items here and there and every week I have an item that isn't edible and has clearly gone bad. Today it was the "fresh cut watermelon". Paid $5 for the cubed fruit. Now my options are to walk back and return it (which I don't want to all the time) or suck it up and lose $5. I did try returning a spoiled item once and they accused me of not refrigerating it. Is that good customer service? They should at least put a sticker of when it was packaged so people can decide if they want to risk it. I'm pregnant right now, so I definitely am on the look out for fresh healthy food. read more

Perfect for running out to grab those last ingredients for dinner, although know that your selection will be limited. We always try to buy our Boar's Head cold cuts and salad mixes at Going Bananas. They put together some great packages of arugula and baby spinach, and their salad always looks fresher than the organic pre-packaged Olivias. Their made-to-order sandwiches are also very good. Surprisingly, many of the shelf items are not as expensive as you would think for a small market. My only complaint, and preventing Going Bananas from getting a better rating, is the prepared "salad bar" type foods. I have frequently noticed pasta salads, and potato salads with a sell by date of almost a month away. There is no way that I would eat a deli made pasta salad after it sat in my own refrigerator for more than five days, let alone thirty days on a shelf in the grocery store. This is disappointing because many of the deli-made items look very good, but seeing how much time they allow before products need to be thrown away deters me from these purchases. read more

They updated the prices on their menu (maybe after reading my previous review?). Now they clearly show how much sandwiches, subs, and wraps cost. I am VERY upset though that they don't accept LevelUp anymore. If they were losing money with it, all they had to do was reduce the reward frequency. Even with no rewards activated at all, LevelUp is cheaper for them than credit/debit. Dummies. I love that the cold cuts are freshly cut for each sandwich. I used to be a big fan of the Southwest Wrap, but the last one I got was loaded with dressing. Yuck. Next time I'll say light on the dressing (keep that in mind, everyone). Going Bananas is a local grocery store tucked into a North End neighborhood. The selection is limited, and the prices are very high for some of the items. For example, for meats, they only carry steak, chicken breast, and sometimes salmon...if you're lucky. There is no variation (ground beef, chicken wings, etc.), and each item is expensive in relation to other supermarkets. The only thing "bananas" about this place is the prices. However, on a positive note, the staff is very friendly, and the community atmosphere the store has created is one of a kind. I walk by this place every single day, so yesterday I finally decided to check it out. I wasn't expecting much, but I pleasantly surprised. They have far more of a variety than I was expecting for a small shop. They sell the convenience store essentials (ramen noodles, canned soups, candy, frozen veggies, etc) but they also sell more specialty foods, including a nice selection of pastas and sauces, and even fresh produce and meats. I also noticed some prepared vegetarian foods (such as a vegan lemon chicken pasta), which you don't see in many places. Along with the grocery store, there is also a meat market in the back, serving boar's head meats (and I hear they make subs as well!) There is also a cheese section that looked really good. At the front of the shop you can order specialty coffees, fruit shakes, fruit smoothies, and frozen yogurt. I got a strawberry banana smoothie (all fresh fruit- I actually watched her peel the bananas and put them in), and it was very tasty. I'd definitely recommend checking this place out if you're in the area and tired of the typical cvs and 7/11 stops. read more

This place is definitely a bit more expensive than larger markets (some items are $2 more than what you'd pay at a chain store), but it's great when you need a couple items and don't feel like trekking it to a larger grocery chain. The staff is efficient and helpful. This store has just the right amount of stuff I often run out of, conveniently! And, although I have yet to try them, I've heard they have delicious smoothies. Great little stop right off the Freedom Trail. It has some nice healthier and vegan options. They even had some vegan treats like Unmade which helps settle anyone's sweet tooth cravings after seeing every other tourist with cannolis. read more

This little gem of a market has a surprise out back, a nice little deli counter that makes delicious sandwiches and slices everything to order with very high quality meats and cheeses. Having just moved to the North End I was a little more than concerned when I googled "grocery stores" and my apartment address and the closest one was over 2 miles away. I discovered Going Bananas after walking down Salem street early one morning and, after seeing the shopping cart filled with groceries on the sign, excitedly walked inside. While smaller than the average classroom this little grocery has all the basics. Cold cuts for sandwiches, cereal for breakfast and an assorted variety of milk and juices. While the prices are a little more expensive than a Stop&Shop or Shaw's the difference isn't unbearable. Heading the 2 miles to a larger grocery store has only become necessary to get very specific goods, and I've only found it necessary once so far. I'd recommend Going Bananas to anyone in the North End looking for groceries, a good pre-made lunch or a yummy smoothie! read more

This store is right around the corner from my house and extremely convenient for me to stop at to grab a few odds & ends.....However, from here on out I will be going to Albie's for fruits & veggies and to the Golden Goose for everything else. Going Bananas is a local store that carries a pretty decent selection of snacks/deli meat/fruits/veggies/dairy/frozen foods. The prices are to be expected - 1.5 - 2 times what you would pay in a grocery store, but you're paying for convenience. The reason that I will not be back to that store is because of the employees. They're extremely rude to their customer's and this morning's visit to grab a few things was no different. The cashier was miserable and had a terrible chip on her shoulder. I'm willing to go to a local store and pay extra for convenience - not for an attitude.
