The current location was opened in 1983. The library is on two floors and I a few hours at a desk upstairs where it was quiet and peaceful. Power outlets for charging, free wifi for surfing and working, and no interruptions other than a couple of kids who got shushed by the librarian. A more than pleasant time. Non-residents can use the library and the wifi. You only need to be a resident if you're wanting to borrow materials from the library. And they have more than books! She was kind, thoughtful, knowledgeable, and went beyond the call of duty to help me in my complicated case. She then referred me to someone for a new appointment and the same day, but they had to close the office early because of weather! Nevertheless, that same afternoon I got a phone call from another wonderful person who spent 45 minutes on the phone, helping me with another aspect of my case. So, this office gets five stars. They truly deserve it!

There is a large quiet section with large cubbies & other areas which I have yet to explore. The lower level has a large selection of CD's & DVD's. Going to the restroom felt a bit ominous because the lower level is usually less populated & the bathrooms are secluded. I would definitely be back here for quiet study or for a change of scenery from my local library. The staff have not been too friendly or welcoming but I did not interact more with them besides exchanging a simple "hello" or "goodbye."

While Montvale Library is not the largest or the…read moremost bustling (the quieter the better, i say), it has a good selection of materials (books, music, games, movies, puzzles, magazines, hot spots), periodic events and book clubs, and some of the friendliest librarians around, just the types you picture. There are a couple private rooms and enough tables and chairs if you need to stay awhile. Like other library systems you can order materials from any of the bergen county system libraries. There's a private lot so parking is always easy. Closed on Sundays.

The librarians are always kind and helpful. They offer different programs on Tuesdays for children, including Zumbini, Music Together, concerts, story hour and music/stories. It's wonderful. I might be wrong, but I get the vibe that if you are not of a certain skin complexion or from the same area, then expect to be treated differently. This is mostly a predominantly white area and they like to stick to their own cliques and people and will let you know that you don't belong there. At least that's the vibe I get every time I visit. Of course it's subtle prejudice and you can't really call them out on it because there is no evidence. No evidence, no crime. But you will feel like a second class citizen if you visit this library. If you think there is nothing wrong and are used to the way you are treated here, I recommend you to visit other libraries in the area and see how much better of an experience you have when you visit there. Don't take my word for it. Experience it yourself! At the end of the day , its still a public library and we can't expect all libraries to be equally good, but it's just sad knowing that our tax dollars are going towards hiring people who aren't even competant enough to do their jobs nor aren't interested in providing a service without injecting their subtle prejudices into it. Respect your patrons and stop talking down to them.

The service here is super helpful, and will walk you through everything the best they can. I came in to get a replacement card and to remedy an error with what was on file. They explained the situation and gave me the forms I needed to do what I had to do. I am satisified with my experience and this office in particular. Way better than calling in!

This whole experience has been extremely frustrating. I have been sent back and forth between…read morecalling and going into the office in person, as if I do not have responsibilities at home and a special-needs child to care for. I should not have to keep making unnecessary trips and repeated phone calls just to get a clear answer about my child's benefits. When I call, the employees often seem confused and I keep getting different answers, but at least most of them are polite and try to help. My biggest issue was with the last employee who assisted me in person. I was simply trying to explain why I was there and what had already happened with my child's case, and instead of listening, she accused me of giving her an attitude. I was not there to argue with anyone. I was trying to explain the situation so she could understand why I had been sent to the office in the first place. It is extremely frustrating to already be getting the runaround and then be treated like you are the problem for trying to explain yourself. I understand these offices are busy, but that does not excuse being rude or dismissive to people who are simply asking for help. Families should not be made to feel like they are asking for a personal favor. We deserve clear information, consistency, professionalism, and basic respect. The communication between employees seriously needs improvement, and the in-person customer service needs to be handled with much more patience and compassion.
