This place is so cute! The decor is super nice and my table was sat right next to the koi pond! A friend and I met up here for dinner after work this week. It was 6pm and the place had some other diners in it but not packed at all. The atmosphere was cool and they played hip hop music. We went straight for the sushi rolls, but I did see that they had ramen! My friend ordered this specialty roll topped with mango, and I went with one specialty roll and one basic roll: the Kani Chung and shrimp tempura. Both of us loved our roll selection. The Kani Chung was really good and topped with crab meat while the shrimp tempura was simply and delicious. The place is a bit on the pricier side when compared to others in the area. Service was great! Our server brought over a warm washcloth for each of us to wipe our hands when we first sat down. The staff was super attentive. Fantastic, and beautifully prepared. The Emerald Roll of yellowtail, asparagus, cucumber, avocado - again, great, and points for presentation. Finally, Wakamono Roll: lightly torch-seared tuna & salmon over shrimp tempura, unagi, spicy sauce, daikon sprouts. As their signature roll, I was a little disappointed because it wasn't anything unique, but it too was delicious. Overall the fish was very fresh, the place was hopping, and we BYOB'ed like mad with a ton of wine. The corkage fee is $5/750mL, a small price to pay for cheap imbibing en masse. On my second visit two girlfriends and I had some time to kill beforehand while we waited, so we had some drinks in Wang's bar in the left room. The Lychee Martini is beautiful and apparently a great drink. I settled for a Kirin Light. For appetizers, we split a Crisp Shiitake Ravioli with Pork & Shrimp and some Edamame. The ravioli were savory, but definitely more like fried dumplings than "crisp" ravioli. As for the sushi, we ordered the Peter Parker Spider Roll, a Dragon Roll, and a Salad Roll...all of which were great. Don't be put off by the high price per roll, as each are pretty large in size. My personal favorite: the Salad Roll. Though it had no fish, it still tasted fantastic - tomato, avocado, spinach and brown rice in a fresh ginger sauce that was perfectly savory. Music was fun but not intrusive, and it was a full house on a Sunday night (we waited for half an hour for our table). Every time I walk by Wakamono and see everyone on the sidewalk, sipping cocktails over a roll of sushi I think, "they look like they're having a good time." After going and doing exactly that, I can confirm; they are. A tiny sidewalk table on a summer night is perfection with one of the many delicious cocktails in hand. We went for the Mango Mojito and Mai Tai - they're great and pretty large! We started with the $16 Tuna Flight - admittedly, we were expecting more than 4 pieces of fish at that price, but the quality was great for the Midwest. My Wakamono roll was delicious, but we were both pleasantly surprised by the Fuji Snow Roll. Apples? In Sushi? You're safe to try it here. While our waitress was kind, she was pretty hard to find, and our waters appeared 20 min after we first sat down. Overall, service was slow, but on a nice night with nowhere to be, we didn't mind too much. I have been a loyal customer of this restaurant for over a decade. Their prices have always been steep but unfortunalely the quality has been going down. I often get take out. Tonight I went to pick a sizable order and they only included one container of soy sauce, which was not enough for the order. They have always provided at least two. Alanis, the waitress, refused to provide any more. When I pointed out that they always provide two she implied that other people may not have been doing their job. Not only was she extremely rude and condescending but she was throwing her co-workers under the bus. Considering their prices this says a lot. Oh, Wakamono. I hate do to it. Really, I do. But, I'm downgrading you one star. *sigh* Nadina D. decided she wanted to have her birthday dinner here. Yes, there were 11 of us. Yes, Wakamono is small and ALWAYS crowded. But, c'mon. They told us the wait would be '10 minutes' at 7:30. But, 10 minutes passed and another 10 minutes passed....Yeah, we were seated an HOUR later. They originally told us that we could be seated at the two larger tables by the windows, but....clearly, that didn't happen. They claimed that our entire party wasn't there, even though we all were! So, instead, they sat people that were waiting significantly less than us. Shady. Waitresses here are generally surly. That hasn't changed. Plus, they didn't give us menus until we were seated for like 10 minutes. But, they did make a nice gesture and gave our entire party glasses of champagne - on the house. Food is good, though, as always. The Fire Dragon and the Mango maki (both $12) are really good. Plus, they gave us each a separate plate with our respective orders...so, that was nice. But, not nice enough to make up for the bitchiness earlier in the night. The hostesses really need to get a clue! So, please don't consider coming to Wakamono is you have a big group. Our waitress must not have believed us when we said we were cool with just water because she asked us 3 more times what we wanted to order to drink. My friend and I both gave up drinking for Lent and her constantly asking what we wanted to drink must have been the devil's way of testing us. Food wise...everything was delicious! My favorite items from the meal were the calamari fry and the Peter Parker roll. I highly recommend trying both of these! Thank heavens, no seating disasters like last time. For two people on a Wednesday at 7:30, I just wasn't sure what to expect. We had to take sushi-bar seats, but were seated right away and the host (different guy than last time) was downright polite. The food was still excellent. We started with a tasty, tangy seaweed salad. I ordered the Emerald roll again, along with the yellowtail-scallion and the Spicy Tako. The latter is made with octopus and was perfect. The other two were not as awesome as I remembered the last time, but still very, very good. We finished up with one more roll, the Kani Chung. I don't remember what was on that one, but it was just as phenomenal as the Spicy Tako. It was nice to see that one can have great sushi AND a pleasant dining experience at Wakamono. Their stuff is probably the best that I've had in the city, so I'm going to have to start considering them my favorite. read more

Dined here on a whim--I am directionally challenged and led my friend in the opposite direction of where we were supposed to go, but I'm glad we stopped in because the ambiance was wonderful and the food delicious! The restaurant itself has a lovely main dining room; small and quaint (holding I believe ten tables of various sizes) with a beautiful koi pond near the entrance. I love the simplicity in furniture choices and wish I was dressed in better form (jeans and trainers seemed too simple although we were well received by the greeter). We were given cool and refreshing cucumber water to drink, nutty sesame soy beans to nibble on, and hot towelettes to cleanse our hands with before service. For our meal, we chose a variety of items to share and all of them were good sized portions: The Fresh Tofu with Sesame-Peanut-Chili Oil was light and spicy; I soaked upon the pool of Chili oil with some bread because it was so tasty. An order of Edamame with sesame & sea salt appeared at our table and when we told the waitress, she let us keep the mistake and it was a treat to enjoy. Of all the Japanese items I have eaten over the years, I never enjoyed Edamame out the shell like I have here. It was steamed perfectly and the ends were clipped off, making the slippery little suckers occasionally shoot out onto the table-- laughable moments, for sure! I loved the wordplay of K-Sadilla (Korean Quesadilla) for its crispness and juicy beef bulgogi filling. It was thin and buttery, light on the cheese, allowing the spices to shine. We split the Kalbi Burger, topped with cheddar cheese and a side of togarashi frites, but the Asian seasonings in the burger didn't quite sit right with me. I ate everything but the burger patty and saved it for later when I could cut it up and use it another way. The sauce on the burger was de-lightful and the togarashi seasoning on the frites was so light, I ate every single fry on that plate. We couldn't decide between three rolls, so we tried them all: Catchy theme roll #1 was Moby Dick, spicy scallops, avocado, and cucumber topped with pepper seared albacore tuna. Honestly, this was my least favorite of the three because I felt the pepper seared tuna was too smoky and over seasoned, giving the roll a burnt aftertaste that stayed with me for a bit. Catchy theme roll #2 was Hotel California, and its blend of king crab, avocado, and cucumber covered in sesame seeds & fish eggs was harmonious and flavorful. The satisfying crunch of every piece had me eating the whole roll during the dinner. Catchy roll #3, Œdipus, was my favorite due to the salmon, avocado, spicy sauce, cucumber, and herbs combination topped with wasabi mayonnaise & salmon roe. Each bite presented different flavors of sweet, spicy, salty, sour, and a little bitter. Dynamic!! My fiance and I decided to try Wakamono because we both had a craving for sushi, and we wanted to try a new restaurant that we had never been to before. The restaurant itself is clean and quiet. Service was attentive and prompt. I had no issues with the cleanliness or the services rendered. What drives this review down from a four or a five star is the actual sushi. The sushi was bland and average compared to other sushi in the area. I had the Shrimp Tempura and Gibraltar rolls. The Gibraltar is a specialty roll made with lettuce, tuna, yellowtail, salmon, cucumber, balsamic, and olive oil. I selected this roll specifically because it was made with three different kinds of fish. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either, especially considering the price. My fiance got the Peter Parker roll. This roll was made with soft-shell crab, cream cheese, avocado, eel, scallions, unagi sauce, cucumber, tempura crumbs and fish eggs. We both loved this roll. The roll looks like it comes straight from a Spiderman comic book. This roll was quite tasty. Again - it would have been a better experience had the roll not been 16 dollars. Granted, the rolls were both enormous, but I think they were overpriced. Overall, this wasn't a bad restaurant. The Gibraltar and Shrimp Tempura were average, and the Peter Parker was satisfying. We had a good time by the time the lady came with the bill and asked me why the tip was lower then 15%???? I answered her that i am usually give 15% tip and she said that the tip was lower then 15% and her manager will ask her what was wrong with the service??? I counted in my head the tip around 15% and find out later that was shorter $2 to be exactly the 15%.But she made the whole dinner experience us to forget how good food & time we had that night and she left us with the feeling that we under tip her.So we quickly left the place and it was uncomfortable time we did not speak and finally we start talking about what was wrong with the tip and how I should react etc, and we realize how she took the whole show over the DAM tip. I am not sure that was the manager idea or the waiters to even ask client for a tip. Bed experience :( and will cross the restaurant from coming back or recommend to anyone read more

Don't just come here for the sushi! We got the hirame (flounder) carpaccio with ponzu which blew my mind. The steamed sea bass with ginger and black bean was light and sweet (very similar in vibe to classic miso black cod, it's the same fish but a more savory preparation). Tempura veggies were perfectly crispy but not harshly crunchy. Wasabi soba was fun but nothing special, as was the tofu with chili sauce (I want to make that at home!). Yes! Another good sushi find in Chicago!! Had dinner with Jordan H and soon to be yelper Kate D here last night. I suggested Wakamono thinking that I was picking something new for all of us to try, but apparently I'm the only person who's been missing out on this sushi. Both Jordan and Kate are regulars...in fact Kate was there earlier this week, but enjoys the sushi so much that she was happy to go back for more. As many of the other yelpers have stated Wakamono is BYOB. So it's cheap and you can enjoy your favorite bottle (or 2 bottles in our case last night) of wine. As far as what to order I can't help you much there because since I arrived fashionably late I let the Wakamono regulars just start ordering right away...with me hardly glancing at the menu. But they sure knew how to order! We started with delicious wasabi tasting noodles and the tuna tartare...both not to be missed! And then we had 5 rolls among the 3 of us...a perfect amount of food and every single roll was fabulous. I remember really liking the dragon roll, but I'm unable to remember the names of the other rolls (darn that wine). However, I don't think you can go wrong with anything you order here- Wakamono seems to have their act together when it comes to making creative rolls that just taste really good! They could use a little help in the service department because our sushi took FOREVER to come out, but I was in good company and had plenty of wine to keep me happy. And for dessert...mochi ice! Mango, strawberry, and green tea...all delicious! I"m a big mochi ice fan, but actually hadn't had in a while after one of my friends ruined it for me (which I"m about to do for all of you...sorry!) and said that the outside of it tasted like skin to her. But 6 months later I"m over it and back on the mochi ice bandwagon. The black fermented soybeans on the table are unctuous and satisfying; the tartare and cucumber appetizers were excellent; the sushi was very good. Well, I admit my sushi leanings are extremely tough to garner, but this place was pretty darn good (if a little pricey). Very cute spot on a neat stretch of street - friendly staff, and well-prepared sushi. The jalapeno miso doesnt do it for me bc i love the comfort-food aspect of miso. Tho I give them props for actually making it spicy - and I know my sister is excited to try it whenever she visits :) The Maki Mexicano is where it's at! I loved this roll! The lime isnt overpower, it just gives it enough unique flavor. And why don't more rolls use cilantro? Yum, guys! The Oedipus roll (name alone sold me) was just ok. The salmon roe on top was so divine I thought I would be falling in love here, but once you get past the toppings, the roll itself is rather dull. There are a lot of interesting specialty rolls like the Sweet Potato Roll, the Peter Parker Spider Roll, The Dragon Roll and the Snow White. They were very intricate, probably slightly more intricate than your average sushi place, not to mention delicious. The vibe in there is fun, cool and relaxed. Since I had never been there before, I wanted to try my faves from other places: caterpillar roll, spider roll, and spicy tuna roll. Win, win, and win! My mistake was ordering a Lychee Martini (spelled funny like Lichie - not sure why). It was like CANDY!!! 3.5 Stars I went to Wakamono this pass Friday. I called a couple of days in advance to make reservations, but they said they didn't take reservations. It was really rainy yucky weather though, so it actually worked out. We got there at 8:00pm and were able to be seated right away. That probably wouldn't have been the case if the weather was nicer. Espeically since Lakeview Arts Festival was going on right outside the door. First things first we placed our cocktail order: Geisha (Tasted a little like passion fruit), Xi Gua (Light, sweet, and refreshing), and Mango Mojito (Citrusy and like the carboniation). On the table they have a little bowl of Soy Seasame Beans. They are delicious! Tastes like they've been doused in brown sugar. For our appetizer we went with our usual pick of the sweet potato tempura. The oustide was nice and crispy and the inside was sweet. Whatever sauce it came with on the side was good as well. The part I was more so disappointed with was the sushi. We ordered three different rolls. Red Catepillar (very boring, good if your non adventurous), Mango (Interesting, but a little too sweet for me. I don't like my sushi to taste like dessert), Godzilla (My Favorite. Perfect texture of ingredients and you could really taste the shrimp). We followed dinner up with dessert, which was also disappointing. Our waiter suggested the lava cake, which we probabaly should of went with, but we ended up sharing the pineapple upside down cake with coffee ice cream. The cake was dry (tasted more like a pound cake). The coffee icecream was delicious though!! I don't even like coffee and I was in love. Service was great! We were there about 2 hours and had multiple people checking on us. Very friendly staff and an all around enjoyable time. I think I like this place because it's attached to Wang's and I can get their ginger martini. It's very good, but not amazing. The staff is very polite and nice, but a bit awkward. It seems overpriced to me for what you get. The sushi was very good, and fresh, but it didn't send me into the stratosphere of sexy sushi. I love the interior and the Eames potato chip chairs, though, those are winners. The natural wood makes it seem like a rural Japanese traditional inn, with modern furniture. Love that esthetic. BUT I didn't come there to ogle the furniture. And WHY is the plektron percussion blasting in the bathrooms? I couldn't get out of there quickly enough. I actually signed up to yelp just to write this review. It was my gf and I's second time actually having the sushi from Wakamono. The first time was take out and we fell in love right away. We went there during a weekday on 12/15/15 around 530 since it's ALWAYS packed around 630-7. So about the food... you know it has to be at least decent sushi when the roll has more fish than rice, right? When you put the roll in your mouth you can tell that the flavor profiles they were going for were mostly umami. Your heart definitely melts as soon as the roll hits your tongue. The specialty rolls are delicate, unique, and sophisticated in comparison to most places. Make sure to grab the $2 fresh wasabi they make because that is definitely a game changer in comparison to the powdered wasabi most sushi places have. We ended up having these 4 rolls between the two of us: Kani Chung, Moby Dick, Yo La Mango, and Three Headed Godzilla. While all of it was amazing, I would say the favorite was Kani Chung and Three Headed Godzilla right after that. I'm sure there are better places for sushi art presentation but this place does a great job at keeping it traditional using wooden plates and bowls with silver chopsticks. Enough with all the yuppie nonsense.... despite that being me.... Wakamono in Japanese means "Young Person." The place is filled with young people (like me, my friends, my cousins, my dates....) The restaurant is VERY clean and ambiance is that of an upscale, modern Japanese restaurant. It is also great to sit at the sushi bar to watch the chefs. The place has a full bar. A little bar is attached that you can wait in/have cocktails at. The custom cocktails are fantastic. I recommend arriving early. It is otherwise a long wait to get a table and nearly impossible for a large group. This place gets credit for having good fish. Of the many times I've been, the fish is always fresh (huge points by my standards!) The main reason for my three star rating is that this place is over-hyped, over-done and does not serve much of the classical Japanese sushi. If you are looking for crazy rolls covered in goop and strange things mixed with cheese than this is your perfect dream. If you want real, simple Japanese sushi, this is not your place. read more

Hubs and I met some friends here for sushi, with so many sushi places in the city, it is hard to really stand out. First off, it is soooo far from our house (totally not their fault) but I felt like I was in Evanston, ha. The decor is great and the bar next door looks super cool, I didn't make it in there to check it out but you could kinda see it from the dining room. The sushi was good, I will say though, I am pregnant so could only eat the cooked and veggie stuff, which really limited what I ate. I liked it a lot though! Sushi is always pricey so not sure what others are complaining about. Overall a good experience, the place was packed by the time we left! A girlfriend and I wandered in on a Saturday night. The place was busy but we were able to be seated straight away. The atmosphere is very inviting and chill with dim and intimate lighting, and the sushi was excellent. We enjoyed the Jalapeno Miso Soup and the Dragon Roll. The Yo lo Mango Roll was absolutely refreshing and the Wakamono Roll with its lightly torch-seared tuna & salmon was mouth-wateringly good. The Tiger's Blood cocktail was also perfectly balanced and a delight. Our only complaint was the service: We were pawned off to several waitresses and we clearly asked for separate checks 3 times (from the beginning) but the waitresses made a big deal out of it and kind of punished us by forcing us to wait to check out. I like to think it was a language barrier, but how they treated other guests suggests that isn't so. In any case, the food and drinks were more than worth it, and I would definitely recommend and eat here again. read more

I like the food and still go despite the owner being at J6 Capital riot. What got me agitated is the $3.00 charge for wasabi. We did not order it, were not asked if we wanted it, but there it was on the side of the sushi platters. Who wouldn't think that is an included condiment? I will actually take my time to complain to the city about this unfair practice and sure hope they get fined. read more

Great Japanese place in Lakeview, Chicago. Really great, fresh sushi. I sadly don't go out for sushi too often but need to start treating myself. I had the lobster roll which was spot on. A large roll for 20 bucks. Worth it. We started with the Tempura. My cocktail for the evening was the Ginger Martini. Delicious. They have a really nice sidewalk patio and off to the side is a little, charming, quaint bar. read more

Best sushi spot in the city!!! I'm from California so I have high sushi standard. Great welcoming appetizer of soy beans in a teriyaki type sauce. The wakomono roll is great. However as odd as it sounds tempura is on key! Friend ordered Ramen and loved it. Best yet. read more

I've been here twice and I've loved everything here. The little details make a huge difference! A few examples: complimentary sesame soy beans, warm moist towelettes they bring out, our edamame came with the ends cut. The place is just very nice; I like sitting by the fish :) Sushi is really good. And I definitely recommend their cocktails. read more

This review is being written less than thirty minutes after eating at this restaurant. I am curled in the fetal position and crying for my mother, even though I know that she can't really help the damage that wakamonos sushi did to my body. I would comment about how comically small the portion sizes were, but that may be the only reason that I still have my colon. I would not wish this pain on my worst enemy. In short they gave me violent food poisoning with their substandard and flavorless sushi. read more
