We were hungry and all the places had over an hour wait. We popped in here. They were closing within the hour so we quickly ordered: Tuna sandwich: 3/5 good big portions but salty salty! French dip: 2/5 bread was dry, daughter didn't even touch the meat... skip this Beef hash: 2/5 salty dry meat, eggs and hash were ok. Chili: ok Gumbo: ok All entrees are approx $20 each. I visited the wagon train over the last two years around the same fall timeframe with my running group after a run or walk on the trail nearby. This morning, it was definitely cooler after the run and the wagon trains cozy environment, hot hearty breakfast and down home cooking warmed us up! We had a larger group and it took us a bit to trickle in but they allowed us to order on separate checks and the service was very attentive and the coffees and food came out quickly. They have a large menu that would cater to most anyone and they even allow you to customize or deassemble a larger meal & order say a single piece of French toast if you desire. They do have cappuccino's and mocha's, as well as a nice variety of milk. I had an oat milk mocha, and the sausage and cheddar omelette with crispy hashbrowns and the table had a variety of everything from bagel breakfast sandwiches with steak to veggie omelettes. All of the breakfasts were a win both times I've visited over the last two years. Can't wait to go back! read more

Getting lost in Truckee after an early morning drive to Tahoe couldn't have started better with breakfast at the WagonTrain. Pulling into town I noticed two places that were open and serving breakfast. One had a single truck parked in front while the other had about 12. Guess which one I chose?! When I walked inside the place was bustling. Tables packed with four to eight guys eating eggs and pancakes etc. Coffee was flowing as servers hustled about. I grabbed a table and ordered some eggs with their special potatoes and sourdough toast with homemade jam - yum! The food was tasty, service fast and friendly and half priced breakfast before 7:30 am. What a way to start a ski day friends. My teen was thrilled about the chicken fried steak (elk) meal (And at 17, cleaned it up). My spouse & tween enjoyed Wagon wheel & French breakfast - a hearty portion- eggs cooked and delivered as ordered. While I had the Jr. French breakfast - just the right amount of traditional French toast, egg & sausage and it filled me up for the day! Bonus was welcoming our pups to sit with us. Would recommend for anyone who wants breakfast, no dishes and a warm home atmosphere. Early morning Breakfast. I had a early meeting and arrived to Truckee 5:30 AM. I remembered they had 50% before 7:00 AM so decided to try an omelette. Quite a few regulars/locals here when I arrived. There is a sign to 'seat yourself' so I grabbed a table. One of the guys at the counter got up and offered me a coffee. The server remembered me from my last visit and welcomed me warmly. I verified the 50% discount as a omelette with shrimp and avocado is $25.50... What I ordered: Spinach mushroom omelette add sausage Biscuit The biscuit arrived fairly quickly. To my surprise, it was split, toasted with butter and honey! It was late and flaky, I really enjoyed my biscuit this way. My omelette arrived shortly after the biscuits. One thing about the omelette, the cheese was on the outside of the omelette, on top. There was no cheese inside it. I like this idea as I can control how much cheese I want to eat. The hashbrowns though crispy on one side, we're not cooked on the underside. I forgot to ask to have the hashbrowns browned on both sides. All in all a great breakfast, great service at 50% off! Upon arriving in Truckee on a recent Thursday afternoon, we walked through town to scope out breakfast places. We came upon the Wagon Train and a sign advertising "cinnamon rolls" caught our eye and we thought "this is it"! We returned the next morning around 7:30am, and it was already quite busy. Tables were full, so we sat at the counter. Super fun - we were able to talk to the servers, and also watch the TV above the counter, but sound off. It had a warm, comfortable vibe of a true coffee shop, welcoming and fun. We got coffee immediately upon sitting down, and not half bad. I ordered the Jr French Breakfast for $11.00 : 1 egg, 2 slices of bacon, 1 slice of french toast and beverage (coffee). It was wonderful! The french toast was really "eggy' and moist, bacon thick and super crisp, eggs ordered over medium but arrived over easy. It was the perfect amount of food and perfect price. My friend ordered the Lumberjack Breakfast for $16.00: biscuits and gravy, 2 slices of bacon, hash browns, and 2 eggs - whew! The gravy was thick and yummy with pieces of bacon, biscuit moist - all prepared well. While there, we were told by servers, customers - nearly everyone, about the "amazing gumbo". I was skeptical - excellent gumbo in Truckee?? A while later, one of the owners (I think) came by and told us she had grown up in Louisiana, met her husband in Truckee, and moved here. Now she makes her "famous" sausage and shrimp gumbo every day, and it sells out by 2pm. She then put a bowl with small sample of it, in front of us. Verdict: yup. It was excellent! Be sure to try it! All in all, a great breakfast in a really cute, folksy cafe with great gumbo! read more

The older brunette waitress came across as extremely pushy, repeatedly telling us to sit down even though another waiter had just asked us to wait a moment while he cleaned our table. While I was standing near the front, she came up from behind, grabbed both of my arms, and physically moved me to the side. I do not appreciate being touched, and being pushed out of the way like that was completely unnecessary. A simple "excuse me" would have sufficed. Aside from that incident, the rest of the service was good, but that interaction almost made me walk out. read more

If I could give zero stars, I would. We waited 20 minutes while multiple servers walked past us without even acknowledging us. When someone finally came over to ask how many were in our party, I said 6 and even offered to split into two tables since the restaurant is small. She ignored me completely and instead seated the three people behind us, even though there was a table for four ready and another table right next to it that just needed to be cleaned. The staff was incredibly rude, rolling their eyes and continuing to seat other parties while we just stood there with no explanation or communication. It was clear they could not handle a larger group, and rather than being honest or courteous, they just chose to be dismissive. This restaurant really needs to work on their customer service and organization. We left and will not be returning. read more

This was my first time in Truckee and I'm so glad I went here for breakfast. Currently my favorite breakfast spot in Truckee. The decor in the place was awesome. It felt warm and comfortable just as a mountain town breakfast spot should. The service was great, waitress was friendly and attentive. The food was so good. I had the hamburger steak and eggs with a side pancakes. The sourdough toast tasted homemade just as the strawberry jelly was, (can't beat homemade). The pancakes were light and fluffy, so damn good! The hamburger steak was made exactly how i like it (medium) which made me feel not too far from home. It was a great experience and I know I'll be back when I'm in town again. read more

The food here was so bad. I got the super spicy Spanish omelet which was supposed to come with fresh salsa but it tasted as if someone just opened a grocery store jar and dumped it on. The hash browns just tasted like really old, re-used oil. Just too awful to eat with a really bad after-taste. I left all of it. The over-used rancid oil smell just hung in the restaurant too. I will never go back and I don't suggest anyone. No one deserve this treatment. Hopefully it wasn't due to our skin color in our group. We left before eating and they lost our service. this is an absolute amazing place to eat great food all across-the-board the kitchen does a great job getting the orders out very quickly. our waitress was absolutely amazing always making sure our waters and our drinks were topped off and I love the rustic style of the entire restaurant and there's a lot of stories that go behind the photos on the wall and the owner Siobhan we met her and she's an absolute amazing person to get to know the restaurant is one big family over there and they made us feel more than welcome. This was by far the worst experience for catering a party. A few of the menu highlights included a cheese board that was an old cookie sheet layered with dozens of slices of white cheese. The pasta "salad" was a huge white bin of corkscrew pasta tossed with canola oil, and bowls of whole green olives, whole cherry tomatoes, and marinated (black) mushrooms to top. Flavorless shredded chicken and beef in watery juice for sandwiches. The wait staff was inappropriately dressed in bike shorts and an attitude. This catastrophe was $175 per person! The restaurant has a large food menu. Hard to choose on what to get but only wanted something small so I picked a bagel sandwich with a choice of pastrami for the meat. The sandwich was warm and toasty when it arrived. The crispiness from the bread and tender pastrami with pepper jack cheese made it taste delicious. I would recommend it if you like bagel sandwiches. We paid for breakfast and left two entire meals this morning. You cannot feed customers raw food period and old food. We work hard for our money however we won't eat bad food. If you're like your breakfast with a side of NRA stickers, police worship, and "good ol boy" charm then this is the place for you. For me and my house, after one visit we just don't feel we will be back. I don't feel that this is an incredibly welcoming environment for a family like mine. It just screams days gone by but the days that are probably best left in the past. Of course one can have nostalgia for the old towns from the gold rush. Interesting relics from the time. That's all fine and dandy. But bringing some of the social constructs of those times into a restaurant just feels odd. To top it off the food is just what you would expect from a greasy spoon breakfast joint. Overly salty sausage, extra greasy bacon, biscuits and gravy that are extremely heavy on the gravy. Basically your standard coronary on a plate breakfast joint. And some people like that. It's just not for us. Won't be back. read more
