Chili cheeseburger after chili cheeseburger, building something between community and cardiology. Maybe that's loyalty. Maybe I'm just projecting. I look at the burger for a second before I eat it, the patty, the chili, the cheese, maybe onions, stacked up like it's been doing this exact thing since before I was born. It is genuinely, embarrassingly good, in the way things are good when they haven't been overthought. And it was delicious in spite of health value. If you're eating at The Clock for health value, I direct you to the salads with prejudice. The menu runs from salads, to tacos, to hot dogs to a meat and three (or for those in Greer, a meat and four), which is not a range you encounter often in a single establishment. It is the culinary equivalent of a man who says he can fix anything. You are skeptical, and then you watch him fix the thing, and you don't know whether to be impressed or slightly ashamed of your own limitations. Ask anyone around town and they'll tell you about roller skating car hops, late night gatherings after high school games, real ice cream milkshakes. Those stories aren't really about the food. They're about who they were when they ate it. I order the sweet tea. It arrives cold and correct. Next we tried the sweet potato gnocchi, again.. very unusual.. presentation was very good,flavor of the sauce was great,but the gnocchi was two whole long logs, not little pieces.. and it was very undercooked or RAW?! At first the server & one of the chefs said that's how it's supposed to be. Later as we're leaving they apologized and confirmed it was undercooked. They have a Carolina Ale on draft, perfect, but they bring me half a glass (comped) since the keg was a dead soldier. So then the bartender comes over and says I get to choose the next keg from amongst two options, one is Allagash White - i said, thats it, not even hearing the other since this is an award winning Belgian wheat beer akin to Blue Moon....but it turns out the keg is Allagash Dark, so i reverted to their lager which was Comfort something or other. It was just a big laugh for us all. But, cool that i had a shot at keg picking. My pizza was a small, individual, Taylors Station (New York style, marinara sauce, pepperoni, salami, Italian sausage, red yellow and orange bell peppers, black olives and red onion). The toppings were well distributed across the pizza providing a full bite, every bite. The marinara was good, maybe if picky it could've had more spice, the crust was substantial yet thin and held all the ingredients and didn't flop. So, this is a 9.63 out of ten. (Get it?!) My wife enjoyed her wedge salad and the cheese wedge potato fries. It was all very good and left us wondering why we have waited ai long to come back here. But driving into the mill village to get to the old bleachery is like driving through Escape From New York type setting, perfect abandoned old factories and a great place to film a horror movie.
