I had a great experience and will happily return when I'm in Athens again next year. The service was fast, friendly, and on the ball despite the place being packed with UGA kids. This was on a Sunday around Noon. I ordered the Fiesta Omelet with toast and sliced tomato. It was excellent! The toast comes buttered. How cool is that? I happily cleaned my whole plate. I sat at the counter and could watch all the goings on in the kitchen. All the employees were working hard. I recommend tipping more than the customary 20%. I have visited the Waffle House in downtown Athens several times throughout the years and have had a good experience every single time. If you visit, be ready to street park and bring quarter coins for the parking meter. I always visit when UGA students are on vacation, so I have not encountered a crowd. I understand that visiting during school season will likely change the experience, but the food has tasted like any other Waffle House; Affordable and delicious. i would give this location no stars if i could! I have been to this waffle house location (down town Athens) two times and both times I have had horrible service. The first time was the night before the G Day game in April of 2018, it was 2am and my friends and I were hungry after drinking so we walked to this location. It was super busy and we were standing waiting in line for a table. About 20 minutes goes by and no one is seated and a few people have walked out at this point. no one is greeted when they walked in and no one is talked to. Everyone waiting is being ignored by the staff. Finally a group gets up and pays and leaves so my friends and I sit down at the dirty table. A waitress then proceeds to tell us that we cannot sit down at a dirty table and it has to be cleaned so we get up and stand. The waitress then picks up the tip and walks away without cleaning the table. We wait another 30 minutes and no one else has cleaned that table or any other table. No other person has been served so we left and went to a different location. The second time was last night 01/01/2019. My friend and I went around 7pm for food before the sugar bowl game. We are the only ones in the restaurant and we sit down. Our waiter was a man named Leroy I believe, we try to make small talk about how empty it was and he made us feel like we were not welcomed there because he said it "just slowed down and he was just trying to enjoy his peace and quit while he could" so from the start he made us feel as if it was a Burdon so serve us. I asked for a waffle cooked light with 2 over medium eggs and a vanilla coke. when I got my food the waffle was not cooked light it was very crispy and looked as if they did not fill the entire iron with batter so it was a bit smaller than usual. I didn't say anything and just ate it. When I got my ticket my total was $7.49 when it usually is only about $5.34 since my meal is on the $5 menu. I tried to say this to them which all 3 employees came at me very aggressively saying that my meal was on the $5 menu but my drink was not included (years I have been ordering this and this is the first I've heard of that) when I pointed that out they very rudely said they changed the menu and took the drink off of the price so it was not included. That is fine and I don't mind paying, but the way they all 3 attacked me like I was trying to get out of paying and how rude they were about it really is unprofessional. This location is really disappointing as its the only waffle house downtown and I love waffle house, But the staff needs some more training on customer service. read more

It seems this is a clever choice for speed and convenience, but even then, you might be better off with your hunger. This is not the way I remember the Waffle House menu. In my college days it seemed like kind of a fun inexpensive treat to go there and get a hearty breakfast, and to be fair, I've since gone vegetarian, but that leaves waffles, pancakes, eggs, cheese, potatoes, coffee... the main staples of the establishment are still perfectly up for veggie grabs. Now and at this location though, it's a double sided, laminated, greasy page with a few items to pick from on each side, and almost zilch that looks appetizing. It's as if they'd like you to leave and never come back. Come to think of it, in the shuttle from the airport, I met a member of the upper management of Waffle House. Between us sat a sweet young Srilankan student on her way to begin the next chunk of her studies in environmental engineering or something like that. This cliche oaf of an American next to her (Waffle House executive) starts showing off his ranch outside of Athens, using my phone to access google earth, etc, etc... In common form, he openly and loudly tries to lather up this feigned familiarity with foreign things (of which he is so proud) by asking inappropriate questions and relating the girls earnest attempt at an answer, to some more unrelated and inappropriate banter. He asked her at some point if she'd been "packing heat" at the airport, and there's where I came closest to smacking him in his dumb mouth, but after all, I didn't and just directed my own questions to the student sitting next to me who seemed at ease with just about anything anyhow. He also asked her if she had a boyfriend (which is perfectly fine for an old man to ask a young girl I suppose) but went on to ask if there was going to be some sort of arranged marriage! Lord have mercy on the movers and shakers of this juicy country. Back to the establishment though, "iiiiiiiiit stinks", and you can do better for yourself. Big up never the less to the employees for carrying on conversations of their own, at the top of their lungs, and for everyone to hear about the latest radio rap song and whether it holds any merit compared with the others. I felt they were at least having a good time, if nothing else. Our server, Kaylyn, had the worst attitude of any server I've ever witnessed, messed up all of our orders, and was extremely passive aggressive. If I were the owner of this establishment, I would never hire anyone with the attitude that she has. We stopped into this Waffle House downtown and had a perfect breakfast. Very friendly manager and staff. Very clean restaurant. The food was hot fresh fast and delicious. We stood in a "line" for 25. There was no organization and we were waiting for a table. When the table was available and it was our turn we went to sit. A few minutes later the manager told us to get up as some girls claimed they were infront of us. We were the second people in line and the girls weren't even in the restaurant when we got there. He then tried to blame it on the line cooks for forgetting to make the waffles (anyone who's been to a WaHo knows it's generally the server's responsibility). So the rest of my order was completed while I waited an additional 10 minutes for him to forget the waffles again. Another server finally handed me my order, which was now ice cold, and I told David I didn't want the waffles now as I'd been waiting for an inordinate amount of time. And to top it all off, I get home and realize I'm missing half of the order anyway. The server, David, appeared to be way too under the influence of some sort of substance to be interacting with customers.
