My husband and I visited Porterhouse Grill for our anniversary. We experienced outstanding customer service, and the cocktails and steak were amazing. Our waitress was attentive, and she made the best cocktails. The mashed potatoes, the crème brûlée, and the cheesecake were good. My husband loved the garlic bread, but I thought it was too salty. I did not love the steamed veggies. I felt they were overcooked and over-seasoned. I would have had a better experience if my reservation note had been considered for where we were sited. It was a special occasion for my husband and me, and we were sat at the first table from the entrance, in front of the bar, when the restaurant only had seven guests. It was cold outside, and every time the door opened, I felt the wind come in. We were sited immediately next to another couple, and it was a table set for four people when it was a date for two. I understand the need to make a reservation, but why would the restaurant ask what the occasion is if the staff will not consider a special setup for the occasion? Porter House Grill gets a 5 out of 5 because it is a steakhouse, and their steaks are absolutely delicious. Additionally, their cocktails are amazing, and Customer Service was terrific, Porter House does not have a private parking lot; consider bringing quarters for street parking, or you may use a parking garage nearby. Our experience at Porterhouse Grill was disappointing from beginning to end. When we arrived, our waitress commented that it was "really busy for a Tuesday." The restaurant was bustling, but there were still empty tables and an unused back section. Regardless, the restaurant appeared overwhelmed by the customers it did have. Upon entering, I noticed an old, aged smell and visible black/brown grease or grime buildup on the vent hood near the kitchen pass-through. Our appetizers were fine. The problems began with our entrées. About 30 minutes after ordering, we were told several steaks we'd ordered weren't available and had to change our orders. Approximately ANOTHER 30 minutes later, we were told additional steak selections were unavailable, requiring more changes. One person attempted to order surf and turf but was told to order a steak and add lobster instead. The lobster add-on alone was approximately $70, yet what arrived wasn't an identifiable lobster tail--it was pieces placed over the steak. Based on the size and taste, the person who ordered it compared it more to crayfish and questioned whether it was actually lobster. Service was extremely disorganized. FIVE different people checked on our table while our actual waitress appeared to disappear for over an hour. Eventually everyone received food except one person. We learned his meal had apparently been delivered to a table seated after us. After approximately an hour without food, something was finally brought to him--but it STILL WASN'T HIS ORDER. He was apparently given the other table's meal instead. By then everyone else had eaten, and his food ended up being taken to go. When our waitress was asked about his missing meal, she simply said it would be out in a minute and was very nonchalant. That attitude continued throughout dinner. When asked why online menu pricing differed from the restaurant, she casually said the online information was outdated and being updated. At another point, water was spilled at our table without even an "excuse me." When someone in our party clearly had questions about the bill, she repeatedly walked by without addressing him. She was eventually given the card for payment and never returned. After approximately 15 minutes, he had to go to the front and pay with someone else. We also watched similar problems happen around us. A nearby table sat unattended for approximately 45 minutes before a waiter apologized and admitted he hadn't told anyone they were there. After finally ordering drinks, one woman received something different because an employee had apparently decided to make her a different drink instead. Another waitress later apologized and offered to make what she'd actually ordered. We saw other customers waiting without food, drinks, or attention, and some eventually left. We could also hear confusion between staff and the kitchen about which orders should or shouldn't be prepared. Porterhouse Grill isn't inexpensive, and the price tag should fit the delivery. This wasn't one isolated mistake. It was repeated unavailable items, long waits, incorrect orders, absent and dismissive service, visible disorganization, and problems affecting multiple tables throughout the evening. Went for dinner last night, and it was not busy at the time we arrived. The bread tasted very off, and multiple people agreed it was. My wife ordered chicken masala ( which to my understanding tends to be grilled chicken) but came out fried and doesn't say that on the menu. The potato didn't have flavor and after having asks for a lot we didn't ask for salt and pepper that was not on the table already. The green beans were good! Other family members ordered spaghetti, surf and turf, and another dish I can't remember. That dish came out cold and was obviously warmed up in the microwave when it came back and was still not that hot. They offered 10% off the bill which never was on the bill at the end and double charged kids spaghetti despite's the 2 kids sharing 1 order. It's been a while since I had eaten here but definitely will not be back. Unacceptable experience for the quality and price of food when much better options exist around the corner. read more

Been here twice now for lunch and it's a pet good deal especially with the portions. Lunch ranges from $15-$40ish and they aren't usually busy during the day. It's a causal fine dining restaurant so don't worry about having to dress up. Just worry about where to park since it's in downtown Athens. My friend and I were sat immediately, and ordered the loaded fries and chicken carbonara tortellini. Food took a decent amount of time, and was very flavorful and filling. We both were full till the point we needed a box. Our server was also very attentive and nice. I'd highly recommend coming here if you're ever in Athens!! If you are in Athens and are looking for a place in a good location, decent name, and really short on time and not too picky, this place is for you. However, if you want a good steak place, are entertaining your staff, clients, or have a group more than 2, avoid this place completely because I promise you will leave disappointed. I have gone here a few times over the years but they have adopted a very tacky over-emphasis on your time limit. I took a group of 8 people and the server was very vocal, after we initially ordered drinks, about how we have already used 10 minutes and only had just over an hour left. Really?! We just sat down and the server is already talking about our time limit?! Forget the fact that later on there was a 15 minute gap between the first dinner entree served and finally bringing out the last one as people waited for everyone to eat as their dishes got cold. No time left later for desert, coffee, etc. I still spent $1400 for the group and would have spent more to get desert, etc. but I guess they needed the room for a small group of college kids. The Last Resort was happy to serve us desert and coffee and suggested we should come there instead next tim for dinner. I will never take my staff there again. I am not expecting Capital Grill Orlando or Prime at Bellagio to be in downtown Athens Ga, but Porterhouse in Athens isn't even mid. It completely sucks if you are a discerning and experienced diner and maybe just ok at best if you are a young college kid and Mom and Day are paying. Otherwise, I hope they go back to the way it was. If not, I look forward to Porterhouse closing and making way for cheap fast food because that's the vibe they are selling now. Good downtown location with an easy walk from a parking lot if not able to get street parking. The food was good for those in our party with salmon, filet meatballs, shrimp scampi, steak, and chicken. The drink menu offers good options with a mule I had never seen that was more fruity than the traditional Moscow. The bad was unfortunately they were out of several food items. We went for a friend's birthday. When we went to order, we were told multiple things were unavailable, including the 20 oz. Ribeye. They said the delivery truck didn't come that day. Logistics problems happen and we still found something on the menu. My friend and myself ordered the Steak Frites, that comes with a 14 oz. Ribeye. Several minutes later our waiter let us know they also were out of the 14 oz. Ribeye. They said we could replace the Ribeye with the Strip. I asked for Pittsburgh Rare and my friend asked for Medium Rare. When our steaks arrived, mine was over Well Done and my friend's was Medium Well. Our waiter took our steaks back to be recooked. When they came back, my friend's steak was correct however my Pittsburgh Rare Strip had came back Blue Rare. I like Blue Rare as well and was ready to eat so I let it slide. However, when the check arrived, I learned they charged us an up-charge to cook a steak at a steak house Pittsburgh Rare, and then didn't even cook it that way. My sandwich was so phenomenal; I will say the cheese inside was incredibly dense and rich and was somewhat overwhelming but it was delicious and a new experience for my pallet! Porterhouse grill We had multiple issues. We went with a party of six for my son's 24th birthday celebration. We made reservations, but we didn't need to because there were not many people at the restaurant when we arrived. We were seated and placed our drink order. The server was fantastic throughout the whole night. And our issues were not his fault at all. So we ordered some appetizers and my father-in-law asked for bread. Server said they are out of bread because they had a party going on in the back room and they ate all the bread. And we were surprised and asked if they could please try to find some, but that never happened. Now my father-in-law is a bread man, and if he had known there would be no bread at this restaurant, we would not have gone there. Anyway, the appetizers were fantastic. We had the meatballs and the shrimp cocktail. My husband ordered a $12 wedge salad with ranch instead of blue cheese and he also wanted shredded Parmesan on it. When it came, the lettuce was brown and the only thing on it was blue cheese dressing. So he was upset about that and sent it back and they brought him another one that looked a lot better. The menu said the salad had tomatoes on it, but his was naked. So he had to ask for some tomatoes and shredded cheese. When we ordered our food, my in-laws wanted to split the meal and they charge six dollars to do that. But when their food came, they got sides on different plates, but the steak was only on one plate and it was not split in half. They said they do that to let the steak rest. I think they should've let it rest in the back room for a few minutes and then cut it and put it on their plate. But that was fine. My husband ordered his $70 ribeye rare and it came out medium. Huge disappointment. He just ate it anyway because he didn't want to wait for another steak. I ordered the steak salad with no onions and dressing on the side. when it arrived, I had extra onions and no dressing at all. So I picked them out one by one and then waited for my dressing to arrive. All the steaks came with green beans and something was off on them and no one ate them. We finished our meal and offered my son a choice of crème brûlée or chocolate lava cake for his birthday dessert. He loves crème brûlée and ordered that. Then the server had to come back and tell us that they were out of crème brûlée because the big party ate it all. My son is not a chocolate lover, but he took the lava cake anyway. The server brought two of them to the table and we ate them and it was delicious. Then the bill came. Right away I noticed that the price of my son's steak was incorrect. Then I started looking at the bill and noticed that they had overcharged us on six different items. Anywhere from $1-$5 dollar up charge. it added up to $20. I went and got a menu so I could compare the prices and show the server what was going on and he said he would have a manager come talk to us. I'll say it again, the server was fantastic and he had a smile the whole time and he was not the problem. So it took about 10 minutes to have them change the bill, but we never saw a manager and that was disappointing. I would've loved to tell him about some of the issues we had. But anyway, we paid our $500 bill and got out of there and I don't think we will go back. There are only a few really good steakhouses in Athens, and if this place wants to charge the high prices, then they need the service to back it up. read more

Disappointing Experience at a Steakhouse That Promises More Than It Delivers Tonight, my family and I had one of the most disappointing dining experiences we've ever had. Wanting to celebrate a special occasion--my son's recovery journey after a serious motorcycle accident--we decided to try the Porterhouse Grill in Athens, GA. Given its name, we expected a premium steakhouse experience. Unfortunately, what we received fell far short of even average. We started with two appetizers. The Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls were inedible--greasy, with no detectable cheese, and had to be sent back. Things didn't improve with the entrees. My wife ordered the Surf & Turf medium well; it came out medium rare, and the shrimp were so overcooked they were rubbery and inedible--$66 for a plate she couldn't enjoy. My son and his girlfriend shared the Tomahawk steak, which was ordered medium rare but arrived more on the rare side. They were able to eat it, but it still wasn't cooked as requested--for $95, that's disappointing. I ordered my favorite, a New York Strip, medium rare. It arrived well done, almost burnt. I rarely send food back, but this was simply not edible. The replacement steak also came out overcooked, closer to medium well--another $66 wasted. What made this experience worse was that the restaurant was empty. These mistakes didn't happen during a dinner rush--we were the only party in the restaurant. Despite multiple issues, including two items sent back, one appetizer changed, and one entree removed from the bill, no manager ever came by to check in or offer any sort of apology or resolution. It was clear from the noise coming from the kitchen that the staff were more focused on joking around than on preparing quality food. For a restaurant named after one of the finest cuts of beef and charging premium prices, the execution and service should reflect that. Sadly, this was more in line with what you'd expect from a chain steakhouse, not a fine dining experience. I truly cannot recommend this place to anyone. What should have been a celebratory dinner turned into a frustrating and upsetting evening. read more

The service at the bar was very nice and helpful and the smoke Old Fashioned was wonderful, but the fried oysters I ordered were overcooked and 7 of the 12 oysters were so tough and chewy that I could not swallow them and had to use my fork to remove them from my mouth and leave them on my plate like chewing gum. The service was very good, but the food was mediocre. Went there today to try a nice lunch and ordered the fried oysters which were ok but mostly tasted like just fried stuff. I ordered the tortellini which was served luke warm after waiting 30 min for it. My husband ordered the ribeye but I'm pretty sure it wasn't ribeye. It was pretty dry and needed seasoning. The service was good and I was hungry (pregnant) and after waiting half an hour for Luke warm tortellini I didn't have much faith in them making it better so I decided to eat and leave. When at a steakhouse get the steak! The staff graciously hosted my party of 13 without issue! Everyone in my party raved about their steaks. They were cooked perfectly! My daughter said, "I've never had a steak that didn't require steak sauce." And we've been to really nice steakhouses. So our expectations were high. I had the crab cake appetizer, a margarita, and the chicken salad. The crab cake was tasty. But the salads were mid, so skip the salads and go for the steak. We were seated in an area large enough to fit our large party which is rare in Athens and were provided with 2 waitstaff. We decided to leave. 70% of the restaurant were sitting with no food. Our friends at another table decided to stay. After our long wait, one order was burned and black, eggs were cold on another, and the last plate to come out was all wrong- the steak was well done instead of medium rare and the eggs were scrambled instead of over hard. We asked to speak to the manager on two different occasions and was blown off in the middle of the conversation. Very disappointed in this experience, especially on Easter. Will not be coming here again. Wish we could give it zero stars, but sadly that is not an option. :( read more

Horrible service. It was move in weekend but somehow they were totally unprepared. No one came over for 20 minutes. They were out of the first two entrees I tried to order. My steak took 90 minutes to come out and was overdone and inedible. They told me "6 minutes to replace" but 20 minutes later my server said "oh your food didn't come out?" Someone else in our party got crabcakes and they were mush. They comped my steak because it was inedible but I still spent $250 plus tip for four people (including me with no entree) and I couldn't even get a free beer for my inconvenience. Horrible experience and horrible service. Total rip off and they just took advantage of me because I didn't get angry with them. There wasn't even a manager in sight. Avoid this place at all costs. We had a bad experience here. We were in town and I was excited to show our friends the place that I once loved to go to for special occasions. I don't know if it is because we are young (late 20s, early 30s), but the food we were served was unacceptable. For starters, the bread was burnt. I mean black. When asked if we could get fresh bread, we were told they were out. The filet meatballs were so dry and undercooked. The steaks were the only thing cooked properly but even then it was nothing to write home about. I never tried fried green tomatoes before and I had them here for the first time, now I'm hooked. We were in and out in about two hours. By the time we left, all the tables were full. They have a few tables outside if you want to sit in the fresh air. I give four stars because as a vegan, there weren't many options and I didn't have an option when deciding where we were going to eat. I had a salad, fries and Brussel sprouts.... Pineapple on my salmon tasted like vinegar. My husband's prime rib was smaller than advertised by at least several ounces and more medium well than medium rare. Never offered the front where air was okay in 2/3 empty dining room on a Saturday night. I arrived to meet friends at the bar. No bartender for 10 minutes. When seated the last two meals came and everyone else was finished. It was so hot that server had to bring ice for our water. It kept melting in the heat. I ordered Chicken Saltimbocca. It is supposed to have prosciutto and Fontana cheese. It had neither. The overcooked green beans still had the stems. They would not let us bring a birthday cake. Drinks were ordered for the four of us and them, plus appetizers. Everything slow. Our orders finally come before appetizer or salads. We tell them to cancel salads and appetizers and find our mashed potatoes and French fries cold. They come out with more cold potatoes and then after 3rd attempt they get properly heated. The ones that ordered the rib eye said it was good but that is the only compliment. I had the spaghetti with filet meatballs, blah! We spent over $450 for an extremely disappointing meal. Our server never even came to see how our meals were. We definitely didn't let it spoil the amazing time we had celebrating the graduation of my beautiful doctor daughter.
