Great place to pre-game and catch up with friends before you go out any night clubs in theater district in Boston. Literally located in the middle of Cure, Bijou, Royale, Rumor, Venue - you can get to anywhere in 2 min. Good to go with your date and also with big group. Music is hip and I would say at least half of the crowd is hip and young. Also, drinks are very good! When we went to this place last time, I got Mojito and Margarita and both were very good. Waitress was very friendly and gave lots of attention. We waited for our first drinks for about 10-15 min - it was not a short time to wait for few drinks but we didn't care cause we knew the place was busy. TLDR: they told our friend, a plus size woman of color that she couldn't enter the bar and conveniently wouldn't give us a reason. After waiting in line for 35 min, a man named Max pulled our friend out of line saying that she was clearly intoxicated. This friend was clearly the most sober person in our group, was standing and walking completely fine, was alert, and having full conversations with him. It was immediately obvious he pulled her out of line as a plus-size woman of color, especially since he then told another girl who was leaning against the wall almost falling asleep she could "go on in." We attempted to ask him several times why he had pulled our friend out of line, and he repeatedly told us he's not obligated to tell us and could refuse service to anyone. Another man named Mark came out and asked what the problem was and we asked him to please tell us what was wrong with our friend that she couldn't come in. He legitimately couldn't give us an answer and asked us to tell him what Max had said. We said he said she was drunk and asked him to tell us legitimately made them think she was intoxicated. He wouldn't answer us and repeated they could refuse any person without having to give a reason. When we pointed out she was the most sober of us and pointed out the obvious fact that this seemed like discrimination he laughed and said that was dumb. I asked for their names and Max refused to let me ask Marks name, saying over and over you don't need to know that and finally called the police, despite up until now nothing had happened, we had left the line and were calmly trying to asked questions while he screamed at us. The police came and we explained the situation and they left, further evidence we were not causing a problem. Max then left the bar, which was odd to me if he is supposedly the bouncer, so I asked Mark if he worked there and he said yes then refused to tell me what his job was. Bottom line this bar is clearly fatphobic, racist, and you have no business going there. As Max said "there are plenty of other bars around here, you should go there." I'll be calling tomorrow, and I'm sure it'll get nowhere cause we live in a messed up place, but go to a different bar, this is a terrible environment that no one should want to be a part of. read more

Located directly across from the Wang and the Wilbur, you'd think a restaurant could make a killing in this location. Unfortunately, in order to do this, it would need to be able to serve food and drinks. We arrived on Friday at 6:50 PM, hoping to get appetizers for an 8 PM show at the Wang. While they were busy, they found us a table (for 2) quickly and we were seated. Our waiter arrived almost immediately to take drink and food orders (7 PM exactly), and said we should be "fine" for an 8 PM show, guessing we'd be done by 7:45 PM. However, by 7:25 PM, our concern had grown for 4 reasons: 1. We'd never received our drinks (much less food) 2. We'd never even had our water glasses filled 3. Waiters were visible, but nowhere near our section (there was no one to waive down), and 4. The 3 tables closest to us all seemed to be very delayed for food or drinks. In one case, a couple who had been seated before us STILL hadn't been able to get anyone to take their order by 7:25. Seeing the writing on the wall, we left. (We explained why to the hostess as we left -- she said nothing, making me think our complaint wasn't uncommon). We ended-up eating at the Panera across the street. It wasn't fancy, but the staff was cheerful, service was prompt, and we saved some money, too. read more

Went here to kill some time before Venu opened one (Wednesday) night. Pretty suave crowd, mostly twenty-somethings. If I were staying at the hotel, I'd def be hanging out down there. Mind you, it was only a Wednesday, I could imagine this place really buzzing on a Friday or Saturday night! Grabbed a few drinks at the (small) dark bar and mingled with a few other patrons. The drinks were EXPENSIVE! Sweet baby Jesus, $14 a pop! Thank goodness we only got one each, not knowing how much they'd be! Can't speak to the beer, as we were tipping the cocktails. I'd probably recommend hitting Rock Bottom accross the street if you're going for beer anyways; far better selection and more reasonable prices. The atmosphere was - shocker - very lounge like. Cool lighting, music, contemporary furnitire and design. Service at the bar was quick and friendly. I liked that! All in all, I would return and I would recommend to a friend, albeit a wealthy one. Minus one star for the drink prices; on an aside, I only give 5 stars to an establishment that is the best in its category for me. My family and I arrived late on a Thursday in Boston. After looking for food options in the area we settled back on the hotel lounge. I'm glad we did. The service was great, and on a thursday the lounge was totally accomodating to my family (including my 7yo -- and I'm glad I got to see her first experience ever at a "club"). Aside from the loud music for what felt like a pick-up-joint at a hotel lounge, the burgers were amazing. My 7yo still craves their burgers (and for a person who has a few years experience eating almost only burgers, this is high praise). If I were in the area of the W Lounge and I needed a good burger to keep down a nights worth of drinking or if I needed a foundation for a nights drinking, the burger at the W Lounge really cannot be beat. It was arguably one of the best burgers I've ever had (coming from NYC where a great burger is on every block I feel this is high praise). read more

Cool, relaxing feeling on couches with throw cushions or '70's style chairs. 8pm on a Friday and you can score a prime seat. 8:30 it becomes standing room only, with narrow walkways (not to impressed with that - new hotel and prime location you figure they would have considered that -1 star). The lounge is a little on the small side, but then again it's a hotel bar... If you want something nicer than the Rock Bottom (across the street) and want to catch a casual drink before a show, this is a good place to be. read more

While I gave the hotel 3 stars, I think the lounge at this W was nice. Friendly and attentive bartender. I was here on business on a Wednesday and the scene was an interesting mix of locals that lived in the residences, grad students, businessmen and a smattering of people who may or may not have been working the room. The food was above average for bar food. I ordered the salmon tartare, which was really good - mild, with a slight acidity to it - no fishy flavor or aroma. The burger is not on the menu but the bartender suggested it and it was fantastic. The 2 items came out to just about $30 and was well worth it. My only knock was the slow kitchen. read more

We just celebrated my son's 26 Birthday at the W lounge this past Saturday night and it was an epic night. One if the best times I've had and more importantly my son and his guess had a blast, 1st off the W was able to accommodate us at the last minute, I was a little concern because when I went to book a section it seemed more conservative, but on the weekends it's another story. The DJ was on point, the food was delish and the atmosphere was perfect, outside of the doorman the staff was welcoming. My only complaint will be the guy st the door wouldn't let the birthday boy in even when I made him aware, then he wouldn't let guess in but walked the line letting certain people in, I found that out the next day trust me I would have made it known that night by management if I was aware. We paid for our guess to come in to enjoy the party and how they was treated at the door wasn't fair. All in all I would not mind having another event there...thanks to the W for hosting an awesome event read more

Odd hotel vibe but bonus star for really strong drinks. I had a very lovely French 75 and one of the specialty cocktails- a mojitoish creation that left me a little lightheaded. I actually visited twice in one evening and both times were equivalent. The calamari is TASTY. I mean, one of the best versions of this ubiquitous dish I have ever sampled. This was quite a surprise. Both waitresses I encountered were polite and efficient and I more than kind of wanted their LBDs. Aloof service but polite and fairly efficient. This place isn't necessary bad but it isn't good either. With a boring pricey lounge like this right in the middle of entertainment central in Boston why would you possibly go here? There are so many other great places right down the street or in the area. I came here thinking that it would be something special, it was not. It had expensive drinks and just a bad vibe in general. Even if you are staying at the W just go down the street for a much better legit Boston experience. They also ripped my friend off we had all reserved a table in advance but after being at the table for about 2 hours (bored out of our minds) we were told we had to buy a bottle to be able to stay at the table when the night was already almost over, please. Been here a few times for drinks with the law school buddies. Its kinda of small, and it is not designed well, or designed too much and the overall feel and ambiance are lacking. Some chairs I would steal out of there, but they also have a few that are not only "too much designing" but very uncomfortable to sit in. The drinks are pricey, but strong and well made, which is something I need, I dont like tasting alcohol in my drinks. The service is pretty good, but sometimes I feel like they are sizing me up. Going to a bar at a hotel that is designed to make you feel like you are in NYC means that prices are going to be a bit above what the typical Bostonian is going to except. Other than that I can say that I love this place. Joe is the best bartender, he always has a big smile, fantastic drink recommendation and entertaining game to play. The crowd tends to be a mixture between suits on business trips, vacationing theater goers, and adventurous/ambitious college students on a busy night. My only complaint would be the overly aggressive locals (you can't hide that accent) in suits attempting to pick fights with multiple different people in their vicinity for somehow disrespecting them. Maybe it wasn't that obvious to the bar staff but it seemed pretty obvious to me sitting a ways away from them at the bar. It has been decades since I lived in Boston but unless that's what Bostonians aspire to these days, the bar staff should have addressed it and asked them to calm down or leave. Terrible experience with this place. I ordered drinks at the bar. Everything was fine that night though I found it strange that they charge an extra $2 for ice when you order liquor on the rocks. A few days later I noticed that my credit card was charged more than I had signed for. Thankfully I kept my receipt. I then called them 3 days in a row and the Bar manager was never available. I finally had someone confirm that the tip was incorrectly increased even though they had my signed copy in their records. It seems the bartender increased the tip either on accident or on purpose. They promised that they would correct the issue, but after waiting several days nothing was fixed. And I found out that my friends bill from the same night had the same issue. A few friends and I booked a table at the W Lounge through Tablelist on a Friday night. We were greeted by the super friendly staff and ended up being seated in one of their insanely comfortable couch/VIP tables right next to a fire place.The decor in the W Lounge is beautiful, its very modern and chic. Great music & overall vibe. A perfect place for a girls night out or catching up with some friends. We decided to order the cocktail service option when we booked the table and it was a great choice. It allowed us to try a variety of the their cocktails- all of which were amazing. Our waitress was extremely knowledgeable and helpful on drink suggestions. I'm visiting Boston from Arizona and my friend wanted to bring me to the W for some cocktails. Apparently, you need two forms of picture ID if you have an out of state license. The bouncer was rude and said the I didn't look like my picture on the license and asked for another picture ID. In AZ, you don't have to renew your license for 50 years, and mine was issued 8 years ago, so I'm sure I may look a bit different than my pic on it. All I brought with me for the night were two credit cards along with the drivers license. I tried to show him my credit cards with my name on them but he refused to even look at them. He then preceded to interrogate me and asked what address I had on my license and asked for my birthdate. I answered his questions and he shook his head and told me he couldn't let me in. Ok, I understand that if you truly need two forms of picture ID to let someone in the door, just explain that and leave it at that. Why go on and interrogate me and be such a jerk?? I came here last night to get drinks with a friend. The scene was comprised of older gentlemen in business suits and women in their late 20s/30s looking like they want to pick up/get picked up men in business suits. The service here is slllowwww. It takes a very long time for them to get you a drink and one lady bartender was downright rude. The others were nicer but it was difficult to get served. The bar was quite crowded but they did have some comfy couch seating for more intimate conversation within the buzz. It had a nice, upscale look to the place. One man told us that he had eaten there and the food was actually quite good. The drinks were on the pricier side but I did enjoy my raspberry lychee bellini and the mojitos were decent. One word of advice: DO NOT VALET. Go find a parking garage or something for the love of God! We paid $32 without tip each because apparently they charge by the hour. After looking at the attendant incredulously and asking if he was serious, he stared back with a blank face. At least he opened the doors for us when we walked out. read more

If you want to be cramped in a small basement lounge with an awkward layout, pay $28 for two shots and an arm and a leg for a cocktail served by blank faced, unfriendly bartenders, and not have a supervised coat check, this is the place to go. If you want your expensive coat moved, thrown around, or stolen, then you're definitely in the right place. It's a "place at your own risk" kind of deal with their unstaffed coat check. I am normally a fan of the W Lounge but they recently lost me as a customer for life. Earlier in the day it had snowed 18" so I had been wearing tan waterproof work boots since the sidewalks and crosswalks were a snowy, slushy mess and I didn't want to ruin my sneakers or shoes. Some friends and I tried to go to the W for some drinks and the bouncers said I couldn't go in because of my boots. When we asked them to give us a break because it had just snowed earlier in the day, they said "sorry that's the dress code, we have to follow it." What a bunch of crap. This is New England. When it snows, people wear boots. Nevertheless my friends and I will not be going back. read more

This place is in a corner of the lobby at the W hotel, and the first thing you think is, "Hmmm i wonder if that collection of chairs and tables over there is the highly-praised W lounge". The reason why you're underwhelmed at first is because the W's frontside wall is entirely glass and the lounge sits in the corner. This causes the lounge area to have an open "airport waiting area" feel to it since you can see right through it to the outside. And there are several long chainmail curtains draped through the middle of the lounge in an attempt to break it up. Chainmail is sword proof, shark proof, but not see-through proof. Overall it makes you feel as if you're just standing in a random area of the hotel... not in a lounge. It was packed with dress shirted men and short yet business acceptable skirted women. Age range...ehmmm... 27 thru 55. They had the fireplace going in summer weather. No place to sit, and not enough open standing area to stand. Pricy drinks, good music though, but it's fun to watch the older crowd hit on each other. [original]. [update 6-25-2010] Came back here as a place to meet up. I got up to the hotel door by myself and there was an female "bouncer" at the door so I assumed she was the ID checker which she was. God bless the girl, she was probably 4 years younger than me, wore braces and shy as a field mouse, so the next things I'm going to say are no reflection on her at all. I got my ID back from her and was about to walk past, when she said, "Can you please wait a moment. It's busy in there and just need to wait for 1 or 2 people to leave first." I looked around and didn't see anyone else on the empty sidewalk and asked, "Why would we need to wait for 2 people to leave if I'm the only one here?". She smiled awkwardly, embarassed and I smiled back and told her that I could understand a need for buliding up the repuation of the place by creating a line. Because I've visited the W Lounge in Hoboken, New Jersey, I expected the same level of excitement I felt in Jersey in Boston. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. Where the lounge was setup was in an awkward area of the lobby directly across from the concierge desk. The decor was lackluster and the music didn't make me wanna get up and dance. I've been to some great W Lounge's (yes it is a franchise) San Francisco and LA and the Boston location just doesn't cut it. The problem here is its poor design and cramped feel. It gets crowded here too quickly cause of the limited space and the drink prices are high but what you would expect for the location.
