Personnel in the shop are friendly, patient and highly skilled (especially Brian). But beware pricing of some of the eyewear. I purchased a pair of Ray Ban shades, but shortly afterward learned that Ray Ban itself sells exactly the same model for $80 less. No refunds and very limited exchange policy didn't help. read more

Being new to the area, I was excited to find Voorthuis and to try on some new frames. I have been wearing glasses and contacts for 30 years, so I have a lot of experience in searching for a new pair of frames. Most of the frames are behind locked glass cabinets. There are some that are open on a wall behind where the workers stand. My salesperson helped me amass a large selection to try on, which she threw uncaringly into a plastic container. She was very opinionated, and we had to sit at a table to try on each frame, while she did a little narrative about each one. The lighting was horrible, and it was strange to not be able to walk around the store freely and pick up whatever frames I wanted to try on my own. The grand total was $749. Despite the fact that I liked the glasses, I wear contacts most of the day, so I could not justify spending more than $450 for a pair of glasses. The pushiness of the salespeople really made the experience horrible. If I want something, I will be more than happy to pay for it, but I do not EVER need someone to pressure me over and over to make a purchase, whether it be for a pack of gum, or a pair of glasses! no thanks!! I will stick to my opthalmologist's office for glasses from now on. Their frames may not be from France, but they also do not pressure me for business. read more

This wonderful, peaceful nook has my favorite California Roll in the area: Thin outer layer of rice; and a generous, finely slivered crab mix with fresh avocado. Every component tastes and feels very fresh. The wasabi, ginger, rice, everything! Sushi is pretty "simple"; ergo if one aspect is mediocre, the dish will be ... unspecial. The CA Roll here comes generously sprinkled with those tiny, bright orange roe that pop in your mouth with a faint but welcome added bonus of fresh fish. Every time I have ever ordered this, the freshness, presentation, size (generous on filling, so if you like a low carb diet but are craving sushi, this is your spot. The CA Roll is typically 85-90% filling.) They have a lunch special on prices between 11am-3pm, M-F, with excellent prices on select sushi and bentos. I honestly love their CA Rolls. (I have also greatly enjoyed their tempura meals. The dilping sauce is a traditional thin, broth-like consistency. (I personally favor savory over sweet, and the tempura sauce here is mildly sweet. I suspect that folks in the Mid-Atlantic used to Southern cooking may like the slight sweetness more than I do, but ot is mild and enjoyable. I am from Hawaii and grew up making tempura witg my mom at home.) They make wonderful tempura. The batter is light and crisp! (Not like the heavy, greasy dough that mortified me from a well-received other Japanese eaterie in my county here.). Maki Bar has fresh, delicious, very tastefully seasoned sushi. I am not a big fan of this place. They have a decent selection of uber -trendy frames, but the prices are ridiculous and the service is OK. Neither will they work with insurance plans. I have purchased frames here on two occasions. This place is not cheap, but they have very attractive luxury brands that you will not find at places like For Eyes. How expensive is this place? Well, the frames alone were about $700. Total cost was $1400. I have received many compliments about these frames (made by Lunor), which reinforces my opinion that it was money well spent. Even though they don't take my insurance, I decided to go with Voorthuis because I heard it was the best, and I didn't want to cheap out on my eyes. It was easy enough to make a glasses/contacts appointment and the staff was fine. However, the doctor was way off and gave me a contact lens prescription that way too weak (off by a full point), despite the fact that I went in wearing glasses and he should have been able to gauge the level of correction needed. He was also unable to answer my straightforward questions/concerns about my eye health. I charged the full $170 exam fee to my credit card and ended up just using last year's prescription to order new contacts. I also ended up going across the street to Ilori for my new glasses. I didn't want to spend another $1000 for glasses at Voorthuis that might not even fit my prescription! What a waste of money. read more

I have been meaning to write this review for a very long time. As far as getting my eyes examined- this was a great experience- the doctor was quick, attentive and she answered all of my questions. However, the eye glass purchasing part was horrible. The people waiting on me took personal cell phone calls while I was sitting at their table, there were three people all discussing what they thought would look good on me but did not care at all that I did not want to try on certain pairs. Finally when I did find a pair I liked the glasses were ordered such that the frame was too short. I had to go back, and push and push and push to have the manager come out and yes he agreed with me that the frames were too short. then after putting on new ones, I felt like I had to convince them that no-in fact they did not feel right (as though I didn't actually know what was uncomfortable. they never got the adjustments right and I am now stuck with $400 glasses that slide down my face because I am too frustrated to go back to that store. In total I had to come to their shop 4 times and I am still very unhappy with those glasses. read more

Not a fan. My first time coming to Voorthuis last year was fine. The optometrist, who I assume is always the optmetrist there, was a little cold in attitude but got my prescription right and switched me to contacts that were much better for my dry eyes. Staff was friendly enough and they took my insurance, no questions or problems. Sounds all good and dandy right? Problems came up on my next annual visit: First, there was no notice of the prior optometrist quitting on the fly and me having to meet with an entirely new optometrist who was also not the new permanent optometrist at this location. They could have, in the minimum, mentioned this when I signed in. I ended up having to borrow someone's car (I don't have one) to drive to his other office for a follow-up. Inconvenient at the very least. You know what else they could have mentioned when I signed in? That they recently stopped taking my insurance (eyemed). Instead, they tried to sneak through my appointment completely mum and then charge me for the full cost of the appointment without explanation after my exam. If you haven't had a doctor's appointment without insurance before, a basic eye exam and contact fitting is easily over $150 - not really money I can just throw around. Only after I asked about my insurance, did they admit to having changed their policy. They did then offer a 15% discount and an itemized receipt so that I could submit a reimbursement claim (for all of $20) to my insurance but if I'd known they no longer took my insurance beforehand, I obviously would have gone somewhere else that did. Greedy. Greedy. Greedy. Fine, I can deal with greedy and now I know to always double check a place's insurance policy, regardless of the past, but what really ticked me off was that NO APOLOGIES were offered. When I pointed out (quite politely, I might add) that they should mention their policy change to their clients BEFORE the appointment to avoid inconveniencing their patients, the receptionist responded with a sarcastic "thanks" and fake smile. Terrible rude service and they'll cost you an arm and a leg even if you have insurance. read more

I live in San Francisco and was out here for work. One of my contacts tore and I needed new ones. I didn't want to buy a whole box since I'm still trying to find the right ones for my eyes. I tried Sears Optical - optometrist too busy. Lenscrafters - they would give me a trial pair if I paid for a supply ($79). Voorthuis gave me a trial pair, no questions asked. In addition they tightened and adjusted my glasses that I had stepped on a while back. Super friendly. While waiting, I browsed through their frame selection and was rather impressed. If I lived here, I would definitely be using them for my eye care needs. read more

I like Voorthuis a lot! I've come here for my glasses for around 9 years now, and I've never had a bad experience with them. They have a pretty big selection of various brands and styles. Horn-rims, thick glasses, frameless glasses, hipster glasses, geek glasses... chances are you'll find something you like. They also have some non-brand (or obscure-brand) frames which look great and are cheaper than brand ones. And they've got sunglasses. Turnaround time is also pretty good for lenses here... I think it takes one or two days. I think they also offer vision tests here, seeing as there's one of those strange devices that you find at the eye doctor's office. read more

Wow, I'm kind of shocked by the reviews that are so negative, because Voorthuis has been nothing but nice as pie to me every time I have come in. I work upstairs at the mall, and occasionally needed to have my frames readjusted because I do things like fall asleep with them on, and so they go out of whack. The people at Voorthuis have always sweetly and quickly adjusted my frames - despite the fact that I have never purchased a single thing there. Every time I come in, they have been prompt and friendly, without a judgeful eye. Granted, I wear some nice frames, (coach, paul smith), but still, they don't HAVE to do it for me, but they do. Actually, this company receives NO stars from me. They provided the worst and most humiliating shopping experience of my life, and charged me a fortune at the same time. I told them I was looking for frames that would last me a very long time. They urged me to buy a pair made of titanium. The package, exam, lens and frame cost me over $1000. The frame broke at the nose junction very soon after purchase. I returned them for repair. Then, they broke again at the same place a few days later. I was frustrated by this time. The frame was most clearly defective and the company would not stand by their product. The frame was useless to me. I had put $1000 down the toilet. The V. employee told me they would do nothing more to help, said it was my problem and walked away from me. Period. I said 'Excuse me' and tried to talk with him again, but he would not return. He then called the Security Guard for the mall and had me thrown out of the store. That was a shock. I wrote a complaint to the BBB about the store at Foxhall Mall. The owner of Voorthuis wrote a very nasty letter to the BBB in response, full of lies about how I had been belligerent and thrown brochures on the floor (all lies). I have never ever been treated like this by a retailer in my life. What appears to be going on there is this company is catering to the very senior wealthy ladies in Spring Valley where cost is of no consequence and no one asks questions. I very strongly recommend you stay away from this company. They are terribly overpriced and no one should have to go through this horrible kind of experience. Oh, and BTW, filing a complaint with BBB will likely get you NO relief. read more

We have been going to Voorthuis in Montgomery Mall and liked the service, so we decided to order glasses from this location. Very disappointing! We were rushed and had the impression of being seen as a dollar sign, or a commission, instead of as a customer. We barely had time to try on the glasses, and we were constantly and rudely reminded of the time we had left until the store closed. Considering we were going to spend over $500, we would have appreciated a little more care. So we ended up no getting the glasses there. They should really rethink their sales strategy, if this is their regular MO. read more

I really liked the Voorthuis near Farragut North metro (I got a pair of glasses there about 10 years ago). so I thought I would try this Voorthuis when I was in the neighborhood. All of the frames are behind glass, and i went in and looked around for 20 minutes--all without being acknowledged by the 2 salespeople. I have never been able to see very well with glasses until I came here. I don't know what they do differently but it has made a huge difference. The saleswoman was also wonderful. She was respectful of my price range and after hearing what I was looking for and with a great knowledge of what looks good on different facial features she brought me one pair of glasses--that looked fabulous on me. Since they didn't take my insurance I checked on prices elsewhere only to find that Voorthuis would cost less than the places that do take my insurance. Case in point, A.G. discovered a defect in a set of lenses put in Robert Marc frames after three years of wear. He replaced the lenses free of charge, no questions asked. THREE YEARS! Today, my daughter broke her glasses playing basketball -- we went to a few optical stores near her school looking to purchase a new pair. Each store we went to said that it would take a week to order the lenses. I ended up purchasing frames at one store, and then took them to Voorthuis. I was absolutely thrilled that they were able to make the lenses for my daughter's glasses on site within an hour. This is the 5th excellent experience we've had with the Mazza Gallerie store. Unlike other optical stores, they can cut the lenses on site which I now realize makes all the difference when you need glasses in a hurry. I'm a big fan and highly recommend them. read more

We have been to Voorthuis many times over the past 5 years even though they do not take our insurance - largely because they have a nice selection of frames. Last time, we were promised our glasses would be ready on a specific date and it turned out to be a week later. People make mistakes. This time, we went on a Sunday. My sunglasses (which they made just 8 months ago) needed new screws in one of the arms. They didn't have any that would fit and Waheed said he would order screws from Bulgari and have them fixed by Thursday. My husband also ordered a new pair of glasses. He selected a Hugo Boss frame that was blue, but he wanted it in Brown. He said to Waheed "what about two weeks to get them?" to which Waheed replied "Oh, no. I can have them back for you on Wednesday." Fast forward - today is Thursday. I call to check the status. The fellow who answers the phone says he has the parts for my glasses but doesn't know the status of my husband's glasses and will have to call me back. A few hours later Waheed calls to tell me that they will have to order the screws for my glasses from Bulgari. YES, YOU KNEW THAT ON SUNDAY - to which he replied, but I was off on Monday and Tuesday. Then why in the world did you 1) tell me they would be ready on Thursday and 2) wait until Thursday to even place the order!!!! As to my husband's glasses, the reply was - well those frames have to be ordered. AGAIN, YOU KNEW THAT ON SUNDAY. So why in the world, when my husband expected 2 weeks, did you say they would be ready on Wednesday. And why have you still not ordered the frames. Bottom line - nice frame selection but do not believe a word they say about when things will be ready. read more

wow wow wow wow.....how much more could i say about this practice. i have been to many and when i say many i mean many optical places and i have never ever experienced such great service as i did by our optician/sales person today at voorthuis optical. i was referred by a friend to waleed, and i have to say does he know his stuff. brought over 4 frames and had an opinion about each and every one of them. that being said he makes you feel as he is your personal stylist. i wish there were a button for 12 stars which he deserves. as he was helping me he also waited on 2 other clients and he sure knows what fits best on his clients. prices were great as i had price shopped else where, i would never leave voorthuis at all.. he deserves a raise. thank you so much waleed for making me feel like a woman and fabulous again :) read more

Today, I wanted to get a 'new look,' unsure of what I wanted...as long as it was somewhat different from the frames I've been wearing for ages. I bought a pair of new lenses for an existing pair of frames I had at the Voorthius location. When I first picked up the new glasses (using the existing frames) I had some problems seeing clearly but I realized from previous experience elsewhere that progressive lenses can sometimes take awhile to get used to and may need to be taken back for further adjustments. I wasn't able to get them to work for me so I took them back. The manager was extremely personable and offered to have my eyes re-examined and get a new pair of glasses at no cost to me but in the end I decided I wanted a refund, He gave me my money back without any hassle or problem and did it with extremely good customer service. I am updating my review to 3 stars as I have spoken to the owner's son and the most wonderful manager Jodi at the Bradley store. She was extremely helpful and ordered me new lenses that should be in on Monday. In fact, she ordered a back up pair just in case of any issues. First review 7/28/16 In less than a month, I bought 1 pair of eyeglasses with lenses put in, 2 pairs of sunglasses 1 with lenses put in and 2nd pair was promised today with new lenses put in and a pair of lenses put into an already bought frame from online for a total of $3,340. Went to pick up promised sunglasses at Bradley store and was told by manager that they were not ready but if I could wait about 2 hours I could pick them up at Montgomery mall store. Sure no problem I had an errand to run at the mall. Three hours later, I have a different lady (the manager from the Bradley store left with, no doubt the knowledge that the glasses would NOT be ready) me a pair of sunglasses barely tinted and with a mark on it. She asked me if I would like to take them with me. Seriously, I am going to walk around with a pair of sunglasses with crappy tinted lenses with a mark on it. She had very little compassion and basically couldn't even tell me when they would be able to get them done. She was just ready to close the door and go home. Family run store, care about your customers. I would say no that is not how a family run store works. Hopefully tomorrow, I will be able to speak to owner of store and let them know that two of their employees really put a bad reputation to their store. Employees should not make promises they can't keep and an employee giving you a pair of crappy sunglasses to walk around in should have much much more compassion than this one did. After spending so much money in less than a month, I hope that this issue gets solved to my satisfaction asap. read more

After stopping by the shop to look at frames I found a pair of frames that I liked and asked if they would be able to put my lens, which is very thick, into the frame and was told "yes". I did not have my prescription with me, so the next day i stopped back and spoke to the same disinterested and huffy sales clerk to order the glasses. She took my prescription and I again asked if the prescription would be alright in that style frame, again I was old "yes". after ordering and paying 450 for a pair of reading glasses I left happy and was awaiting the delivery of my glasses. The next week I received a call from the sales clerk telling me that the optician said he could not put that thick a lens in the frame and I need to pick out new frames. I was so disgusted I had them refund my money. When one asked a question two times and is told there is not a problem it is just incompetence that allows such an error. The sales people are not opticians so it seems what they say is irrelevant. This place is expensive and they have incompetent help. read more

It's been a year and half since I purchased my frames and lenses from Voorthuis and I am still very happy with my choice to go there. I have worn glasses for more than 30 years (daily) so I have a pretty good idea of what works for me and what doesn't. I happened upon the perfect salesperson at Voorthuis (Jody) who was helpful in guiding me through their great selection of frames, without being pushy or opinionated. She really listened to what I wanted and after trying on some really great frames, I ended up with a pair of glasses that have been perfect for me and I've received many complements on them. They are just a little different from what you find at the chain eyeglass stores, a bit edgy, but not too much over the top. I have also purchased glasses for my daughter here, and she's been very pleased, as well. The glasses arrived much quicker than were promised and they have held up well. I highly recommend this optician for glasses purchasing. I have not had my eyes examined there, as I have a optometrist that i have gone to for many years, so I can not address the eye exams. They are more expensive than the chain eyeglass stores, but the frames and lenses have really held up for me, so I didn't mind spending a little more money for a great design and a good quality product. The great service was a bonus and will have me heading back that way when I am in need of a new look. read more
