The exam was complete especially since we required non routine follow ups for on going issues. We had an issue with our insurance which they personally called me to resolve, showing their dedicaton to resolving complicated issues and customer service. This was my first visit to an optometrist and I did a lot of research on offices in the area. Then I asked coworkers for any recommendations they may have. Dr. Lobaugh and Eye Rx in Chevy Chase landed high on both of my lists. I couldn't have been happier with the efficient experience. The staff was very patient and answered all of my questions. The intern/technician who performed the initial exam was calm and receptive to my observations (I had a lot -- it was my first time!) and Dr. Lobaugh took his time to explain the parts of the exam, their relevance to my diagnosis, as well as simple practices to maintain healthy eyesight between visits. I also enjoyed the ease of ordering new glasses via the in-house OD. WIDE selection of frames and lenses. A fantastic experience all the way around. Dr. Lobaugh was terse and dismissive when I went in for my exam, clearly in a bad mood. The optical department is treated shabbily by the practice - low pay and condescending management. The doctors have the optical department processes payments and while they have you, the patient, captive, they are expected to do a hard sell on glasses and contacts before you can leave. I wouldn't be surprised if they are paid on commission. Their products are hugely overpriced: Glasses - standard frame, multifocal, after insurance - $685 - outrageous. I can't imagine what their designer frames cost. With Warby Parker and online shops, I thought the model of gouging patients for glasses and contacts was over. I went back to recheck my reading prescription, only to be told by Dr. Lobaugh that they arbitrarily assign a reading prescription according to the patient's age. He charged me $132 for this information. When I politely suggested there should be no charge, Dr. Lobaugh yelled at me until I paid. Go somewhere else. read more

Pleasant staff, competent and thorough exam, and no pressure to buy glasses, but they charged me $50 above list for frames. Another significant drawback is that they share a tight waiting area with a pediatric practice, making it risky for respiratory exposure. read more

As other have mentioned, Dr. Lobaugh is wonderful - professional, patient, knowledgeable, attentive and kind; he is the reason I keep returning - but the office is disorganized and sometimes unprofessional. I started receiving emails and messages that I had eyewear or contacts to pick up, although I hadn't ordered any. I called and emailed, to no avail, to find out what was going on. Finally, I received a call for another issue (apparently they didn't have my insurance on file - despite being told after the exam that the exam was covered and that I had a credit for contacts, all benefits of my insurance, so...ok), and asked what about the order emails. I then got a call telling me that I had ordered the contacts and "must've forgotten". Ha! Maybe this works with less meticulous customers, but not with folks who keep notes from their doctor visits. When I reminded the office employee of our conversation and of the transaction that actually did take place, he suddenly acknowledged that he had mistakenly ordered another box of contacts. No harm, no foul, but I didn't appreciate having to chase them down to answer a simple question, and the insinuation that I was scatterbrained. Mind you, there were several mistakes I had to point out to the same person when I was still in the store (like my prescription inexplicably being valid for 2 years instead of 1 - the end date had been entered incorrectly), who acknowledged his lack of tech savviness (I had asked if I needed a physical card to pay or if I could pay with my phone, via Samsung Pay. I had to ask if they had a contactless POS, and had to explain that phone apps generate a unique code for each transaction instead of giving the merchant the actual CC number). The supporting staff, as in the DC location, are meh. Dr. Lobaugh seems to keep a close eye on them, including asking them to repeat tests or procedures when necessary, which leads me to believe he's aware of their shortcomings, but just two examples that defy logic: coming anywhere near a patient's eyes with huge fake nails (she was putting dilating drops in my eyes) - how is this even allowed?! - and having random people come into exam rooms and turning on lights during exams (which of course invalidates the exam results), but then having to be reminded that it was not the patient's fault (when told by the doctor the exam had to be redone). I would hate to leave Dr. Lobaugh, but I am open to alternatives if I can find better-run offices. read more

They are a lovely pool of water in an oasis surrounded by poor optometrists. I can't praise this practice enough. They are very family friendly and treat a lot of children. If a family trusts them with their youngest, that's saying a lot! Moving onto the rest of the family... they're just wonderful. They take their time to get you what you need and have a lot to offer. I'm so happy to have found them! Dr. Lobaugh along with his associates are wonderful from start to finish. Dr. Lobaugh was very patient and explained every step of the exam, even if it wasn't necessary, but it made the experience so much better than my previous experiences at other optometrists. He knowledgeable and very professional. He skillfully fit me with a proper prescription - something my previous optometrist failed to do. Edgar took his time with fitting me into glasses that fit well and would make me a satisfied customer. Bottom line, they're a breath fresh air and know what they're doing!! Dr. Teller provides detail oriented and thorough exams. He is a doctor who is genuinely concerned about his patient's well being. He always takes the time to address my questions and clarify explanations. You can tell he is very knowledgeable about his field of practice and treats his patient's with the utmost respect. The front desk staff, technician, and opticians are all very helpful and knowledgeable in their respective fields. State of the art equipment to aid in diagnosing diseases. The doctor is great. 5 stars for him. Courteous and friendly. It's a real shame however that the optical department is a disaster. Zero stars. Never got the glasses I ordered and had to have it refunded. Contact lense ordering equally problematic. Complete staff incompetence and lack of motivation. I've known Dr. Teller for some time and there's a reason I keep going back; he truly cares for his patients. When I was new to progressive lenses, he was extremely patient in spending time and effort ensuring I was comfortable with the new frames and optics. Even as I was about to give up, he would take the time to explain to me ways I could get use to the new frames faster. But it's not just the experience of visiting doctor Teller that's pleasant; it's the entire office visit. The staff at Eye RX is extremely friendly, courteous and professional, and I love the automated system that gathers your personal information. It scans your license, insurance cards, and you're basically done. You don't have to fill out any lengthy forms. Overall cannot recommend Dr. Teller and his staff enough; absolutely great group of Doctors, staff and service. read more

The eye exam was fine. Dr. Lobaugh and his team were courteous and efficient. However, the optical department is highly disorganized. I ordered a pair of glasses on the same day as the exam and 7 weeks later, still no glasses. I called twice and received the same excuse both times about the lens being sent to the wrong place, with the promise that it will be expedited and available in a week. And frankly, what really bothered me was their nonchalance about my experience. Left me thinking that they don't seem to really care about not owning their own customer service -- it's UPS' fault or someone else's. So I canceled my order. The doctor and his intern were great, but it took me forever to schedule an appointment and even longer to get my contact lenses. I called for the third time to order them and the person told me that the order "had been started" (but, apparently, not finished.) She was then very helpful in addressing it, but the administrative aspect of the office is putting a drag on the attention to patients. If you do use this practitioner, be prepared to call multiple times. read more

Dr. Teller is an excellent optometrist and I highly recommend him. I am extremely near sighted and wear rigid gas permeable contact lenses. I initially saw an opthalmologist in another practice who tried to dissuade me from hard lenses, most likely because he didn't know how to fit them properly! Fortunately, I found Dr. Teller though a neighborhood listserv. He specializes in difficult cases and has tons of experience fitting hard contact lenses on patients. He also is extremely nice, patient, and truly wants his patients to be happy. I have also seen him for issues with dry eye and he helped with that as well. I feel very fortunate to have found him and my only regret is that I am moving out of the area and will therefore need to find another doctor. read more

Dr. Teller has handled my very complicated gas-permeable contact lens issues for almost 20 years. I have cornea and vision issues that are very challenging. Dr. Teller is a miracle worker. He achieves superior vision for me in ways that astound me. His staff is pleasant and professional (I've dealt mostly with Mallory as my optician, but others have been good as well). I have an eye surgeon who handles my surgery issues; I will not however go to any optometrist other than Dr. Teller. I'm 70 years old, and have seen a full range of eye services - from poor to excellent. Ben Teller is A+++ OUTSTANDING. And he cares about his patients. I would NOT recommend Eye Rx. We have now purchased several pairs of glasses here for my son over the past few years. I have never been impressed with the customer service, but my recent experience has left me outraged. We ordered glasses in early November. They arrived a week or so later, but I never received a call because the automatic system was not working. Instead of being offered compensation because I had purchased a back up pair at full price (not through insurance). Instead, I was insulted by the employees who accused me of not tending to my son's vision. Finally, I was given the option of picking up the glasses I had paid for months ago or a refund of 36 percent of what I had paid. I should have been offered both the glasses and a refund of 36 percent to make up for the poor customer service. Also, it took five or six phone calls before I could reach the manager. She never explained why I was not called by a staff member since there were issues with the telephone notification, nor did she explain she didn't return phone messages from December for weeks or apologize. I let her know that I would recommend that my son's pediatric eye doctors no longer recommend Eye Rx. read more
