Found Dr. Ephraim after finding him recommended by neighbors and had a perfect experience. I had been doing to another practice for a couple years, but they seemed to be focused more on senior patients and it was a cumbersome process. My experience with Dr. Ephraim was 5-stars across the board! He was timely, there was never any waiting, and it was overall an extremely pleasant, easy process. There was no puff of air (argh! thank goodness), yet he had technology that I've never had used on me from other places that was able to show detailed digital images of my eyes and its cones, etc. He prioritized both the health aspect of my eyes as well as the accuracy and optimization of the prescription which was exactly what I was hoping for. There was no pressure to buy glasses or contacts from them, which I appreciated. Dr. Ephraim was also super-personable and funny, and his staff was efficient and professional. I paid out of pocket because I didn't like the experience I had elsewhere, and it was worth it, but he does take multiple vision insurance providers. Note: I did originally have trouble connecting with them for an appointment and didn't get an answer the first couple times. I called a bit earlier and that helped to finally connect. read more

Dr. Ephraim is expert and personable. It's a longtime family business (that his father had originally). He talks VERY fast and provides a LOT of information about eyes and vision. You may feel snowed and have trouble remembering some or most of it later. I took a star off because of the trouble reaching someone to make an appointment and the person is abrupt. His optician specialist not only crafts glasses and orders contacts but handles a busy phone, receives patients arriving, triages requests, etc. I give him credit for being able to do all that, but the phone-side or counter-side manner and attention were at times lacking. If you want an expert exam and expert glasses making, and can deal with the above and a smaller but curated selection of frames, you may be satisfied. read more

I am giving a 2 stars because I am a new patient, and liked the warm welcome by Dr. David and the entire examination process. What I don`t like is the difficulty in speaking with his assistants and scheduling an appointment. One time, he picked up the call and said that he was assisting another patient and will call me back-never did. Other times, I will call before 3:30pm and got a message that the office was now closed. A shame because I really like Dr. Ephraim. read more

Dr. Ephraim is a world-class optometrist. In fact, as someone who travels often, I make the effort of flying all the way to Maryland each year to continue to use Dr. Ephraim, that's just how good he is. Forget the optometry-mill outlet centers in malls and walmart, if you care about your eyes, you want to see Dr. Ephraim. He has top-notch knowledge and equipment, and has his practice down to a science (my last full exam took about 25 minutes, which included him going into great depth to explain my eye health. During the period of social isolation we have been limiting our outings to picking up food and medical visits. Well there may be a few visits to the liquor store thrown in there. Anyway, it was time for our eye exams so we called and made our appointments. The whole experience was very comfortable. As of June, Dr. Ephraim is only scheduling one appointment per hour per client(s). Family members can be seen during the same hour. The front door is locked so there is careful control over who comes in and when. Masks are required and the office is thoroughly disinfected in between visits. As usual Rich and I got a thorough exam and plenty of time with the doctor as he explained what he was doing and what he was seeing. So lucky to have so many caring, exceptional medical professionals in this area. read more

It is disappointing to have to file a complaint with the state for Dr. Ephraim to address billing discrepancies. Multiple attempts by phone and in writing were made to resolve this directly with Dr. Ephraim. Read receipts were received for attempts to address in writing - but no response from Dr. Ephraim or his office - even after follow-up attempts. Insurance company EOB states patient responsibility as $0 and does not reflect payments made on date of service - or any service for which patient would be responsible. This really could have, and should have been a simple fix - resubmitting to insurance company to reflect correct charges or payments made, or - simply refund payment if necessary. While my first thought was that this was either a mistake on the insurance company's end, or an accidental oversight by Dr. Ephraim's office - the lack of response suggests otherwise. Super slick way to overcharge patients, as often they do not check insurance company EOB's - and a pretty nice cushion to his income if he's doing this with every patient - or even once a day. Where do I begin? The nicest, most professional, informative, calm and personable doctor I have ever encountered in my accident prone 56 years!!! He should be in charge of the nuclear codes or hostage negotiating or crisis management. He should be performing emergency neurosurgery in a war zone--that is how intelligent and calming he is without an ounce of pretension! He has a gift with people, and he explained the science behind my eyes in a way no one ever has before. I have no anxiety about vision checks, but if anyone out there has a squirmy child or phobic adult or someone just worried about their eye issues...THIS is the guy!!!! The worst optometrist that I have ever been to. David Ephriam took over his father's practice. We had been going there for years. David told me that I did not have Macular Degeneration after having been diagnosed by specialists. This led me to feel that I had been miraculously "cured," which is literally impossible. A change in doctors and a rediagnosis of Macular Degeneration was made with my new doctor. Refraction was faulty, but had to wait a year to go to new doctor to get new glasses. I have been searching for the perfect optometrist over the years and I finally found him. The experience far surpassed any expectation I may have had. I am in my fifties and have had eye changes as I have gotten older. I never can have my eye refraction done correctly over the years and Dr. Ephraim did tests I have never had before. He thoroughly and patiently explained the anatomy of my eyes, he also took the time to examine my eyes internally. The dilation process was amazing... not at all what I am used to. "Mo" was amazing as well... explaining the prescription options and helping me get the measurements very precise. I found this practice after hours of searching online reviews and blogs. I took the chance and booked an appointment. The staff is extremely friendly, patient, and accommodating. My only regret is that I did not find David Ephraim sooner. I was previously a patient of Dr. Barry Ephraim, David's father. After TOO many years in between check-ups, I finally returned to them a little over a year ago, and am in much better vision health now. The other reviews are accurate, David is most capably filling his father's (and grandfather's) shoes. This is a WELL established, LONG running family business now in its third generation. It doesn't get any better than this. Dr. Ephraim is friendly, down-to-earth, genuinely kind and patient. Years ago, his mother "set me up" with some amazing vintage/NOS frames. Dr. Ephraim took the time to get my prescription just right. Half a year later, I'm still really pleased with this Rx. The first frames I got did not have nose pads because I wanted to try more comfortable frames. However, they just wouldn't stay up on my (small) nose; for no extra charge they changed my frames out for ones with nose pads which stay perfectly in place even six months later. And somehow, Mo was able to adjust them so they are actually very comfortable. Dr. Ephraim also communicated with my ophthalmologist to be sure to accommodate the special needs I have with my eye health. read more

Dr. Ephraim is extremely competent and patient. I came to him after my regular optometrist had retired, and I always thought of my eyes as kind of difficult to prescribe for. However, with Dr. Ephraim's help, I now see better than I have in many years. I have not had to wait more than a few minutes to see him when I've had an appointment. I had be seeing "Dr David"'s father for more than 15 years. "Dr David" is, incredibly, a third-generation optometrist. He could have had no better teacher than his father, but "Dr. Ephraim 3.0" stands on his own merit. I think he has an unusually strong academic and professional background, in addition to the strong ethos and attention to detail learned from his father. What one wants is a physician who is careful and knowledgeable, with a pleasant manner, and who communicates well; Dr Ephraim is that. The physical office is underwhelming -- we can call it charmingly retro. But so was his father's in his downtown office and his Kensington office (which Dr. David has taken over). The staff have been with the family for at least as long as I can remember, which helps both in continuity and in communicating the strength of the operation. I saw Dr. Ephraim for an update to my contacts and glasses. I chose them based on the reviews and that my insurance was accepted there. I ended up seeing the son, Dr David Ephraim (but I will go out on a limb and say that what applies to the son applies to the father)... This, by far, has been THE BEST OPTOMETRY appointment i have ever had, and i have had plenty of good ones (and some bad ones). I am in my 40s and have been wearing glasses and contact since 2nd grade, so i have seen plenty of eye doctors over the years. Dr David Ephraim was the most thorough, the most careful and the most knowledgable optometrist I have ever seen. My prescription is such that it makes it sometimes hard to get the right match with glasses and contacts (i am very myopic at -11.00 in both eyes). Not only was my initial appointment thorough, and very long, the time spent did not seem tedious (this is because of his great personality and extremely deep knowledge of the subject of eyes). He helped me with many insights, things I did not know in the care of both my eyes and my contacts. For example, I happen to also use CPAP ....well, he gave me a few easy to manage tasks to help my eyes not be so dry (I never knew CPAP was drying my eyes out--and none of even my CPAP doctors had mentioned this). Every question was answered thoroughly, and in CLEAR detail. He is great at explaining complex concepts. I could go on and on about him...do yourself a favor and check these guys out (the father or the son)...your eyes will thank you!! I must mention it (and I feel silly even saying it) but when i first walked in to the office, it is very very unassuming, meaning that the decor was simple and felt like it might have been from the seventies. The office itself is located in a simple shopping center. no fancy signs, etc. etc...DO NOT let this throw you off !! It threw me off (can i blame my brain?) until ten seconds with Dr David Ephraim. Then I knew it didn't matter. Note that their equipment is very up to date! And that is what matters. That and the doctors. Hope this helps you decide. read more

I would leave zero stars if that was an option. The store manager is either incompetent or is engaged in some underhanded business tactics. He was unable to find my vision insurance, I had to pay for two exams out of pocket. After we chose frames, he said everything was all good and we were ready to go. After multiple phone calls to straighten out the insurance, that part is done. Two weeks later, my daughter still without her glasses, we find that he never even placed the order for her new glasses at all! I got such a weird vibe off the ineractions of the doctor with the manager, looking back it's not surprising what a mess it turned out to be. read more

I always try to shop locally, and this is a family-owned business with good reviews, so I went. The exam was thorough, glass selection is great. I'm sure it's a bit pricier than a big chain optometrist but I'm a firm believer in paying more and buying less so you can live in a community where your neighbors have decent incomes and a decent quality of life. Anyway, after about 18 months I got a huge scratch on one of my lenses right in my field of vision. The front desk staff said it would take about 2 weeks to send the glasses out for lens replacement. Fine. But I got rid of my old glasses because I broke them, so I needed to buy a cheap pair of backup glasses so I could take my "real" glasses here and have them repaired locally. However, the office will only issue me a prescription that is valid for one year from the date I purchased the glasses, about 18 months ago. A one-year prescription is the minimum required by law; in my experience most doctors write them for two years at the very least. So despite the fact that I've worn essentially the same prescription for 25 years I have to get another exam that will no doubt be the exact same prescription, just to get backup glasses so I can repair my regular glasses.... It's just frustrating. read more

All the five-star reviews here are duly warranted and well-earned. Dr. Ephraim is a true professional who actually spends quality time with his patients. You are guaranteed to leave his office knowing much more than when you went in. This is the polar opposite of the corporate drive-thru eyeglass operations where doctors spend a few minutes with you and send you on your way. The only complaint I have is that I was charged something like $50 for a brief "class" on how to insert contact lenses and was not told about the cost until I was presented with a bill at the end. I was simply taken to the back by Dr. Ephraim's assistant who instructed me on how to put on contact lenses as if this was part of the initial visit. When I arrived, I was greeted warmly and with a smile by the office manager. I didn't have to wait at all as the doctor quickly came out to meet me. He explained every procedure clearly and answered all of my questions in detail. I was impressed with how thorough he was and how much time he spent examining my eyes without never making me feel rushed. After the exam, the office manager kindly explained to me what my insurance covered and took care of my new prescription without pushing me to buy new frames as it usually happens at other optometrists' offices. What did not change is the level of quality and attention that you would get from David and his staff. He'll answer every question you have; I see him as the perfect doctor for the curious!
