Stanley Kaplan is a truly excellent eye doctor. Dr. Kaplan thoroughly knows his business, understanding not only eye health but also other health issues. For example, a few months after I got bifocals, I developed numbness in my hands which my regular doctors could not diagnose. Dr. Kaplan explained how using bifocals at a computer screen can pinch nerves in the neck. He prescribed special glasses that I use with my computer and the numbness cleared up. Another aspect of his thoroughly knowing his business is that, whenever something significant has been happening with my eyes, he has always referred me to a specialist who could immediately handle my needs. For example, once he determined that I needed a retinal specialist and he recommended someone who was excellent and who would see me that very day. Dr. Kaplan is very accommodating, finding an appointment that will suit my schedule, taking time to be thorough, and always treating me with kindness and respect. He is a fascinating, kind, brilliant, funny, and very caring human being. I recommend him highly. read more

You know when reviews can be so contradictory it's hard to make a decision about a potential business? I have learned that one red flag is when someone complains about a business and nearly writes a book cataloging the details of their frustration, that those tend to be the isolated incidents and are only one side of the story. I hope my review makes potentially choosing this office a little easier. Yes, the office is in a tight space in a building that has been around a while. This is a VERY small operation. But if you can get past that you will get outstanding service and treatment here! Dr. Kaplan is old school with 40+ years of experience. He takes his time with each patient, which means longer wait times you won't regret when it's your turn. In my personal experience, Dr Kaplan discovered that I had had the wrong prescription for the last several years. This explains an awful lot of problems I was having. He explained the risks of getting a new prescription, that most people have a very hard time adjusting to a new prescription that was radically different from the one they were currently wearing. But once he showed me what my eyesight could be if I adjusted to the new prescription it was a no-brainer. I've been very happy with the glasses, the prescription, and all the wise counsel he gave me and the length of time he spent with me to get it right, and how he explained everything he was doing throughout the entire procedure. I can live without an ultra-modern looking office and showroom, and I would not trade those for the level of service I got from Dr Kaplan for anything. I highly recommend this office. read more

If I could give 0 i would, after many years of average service the communication and respect has declined. Dr Kaplan is stuck in time, disrespectful and rude. His optician clerk is not well versed in varying insurance, if not VSP; such that she fails to inform you of any additional options available to you. Dr. Kaplan is awesome. He saw me on his day off to fit my schedule, had excellent bedside manner, answered all my questions, let me try on frames for over an hour, and was willing to negotiate a fair price for my new frames. Clean small office with an excellent selection of frames including Rayban, Hugo Boss, Gucci, and frames for any budget. Staff is friendly and accommodating. I started seeing Dr. Kaplan over 30 years ago and, though I have lived abroad for the past 20, I still wait for my annual visit to the States to have my eyes checked. He is the only doctor I've found who understands my prescription (it's really bad) possibly because he's the only person I've ever met whose eyes are actually worse than mine! As other reviewers have mentioned, seeing Dr. Kaplan is an experience. Be prepared to spend some time, not only in the exam chair, where he will provide detailed information about your current state and possible future needs, but also in the waiting area, where he will likely have a bit of a chat with you, asking for the latest news about you, your family, possibly even your pets (Dr. Kaplan has a prodigiuous memory). This is a good thing. There are few doctors who will ever show this much interest in you... He also has a great selection of all types of glasses, including sunglasses and sports glasses, and I was even able to find a very funky (and therefore acceptable to wear) eyeglass chain so that, as per his recommendation, (sigh) I can keep my now necessary reading glasses eternally available for use. TL;DR What an odd experience...the female employee at the desk needs to learn to stop screaming at everyone for no reason. Also, if she says, "you didn't get my message?!?!," she probably didn't even attempt to give you a message. My appointment itself was...odd...and the follow up care from the female employee at the desk lacked any kind of pleasantries. When I checked in for the appointment, the employee began (from her seat) SCREAMING Dr Kaplan's name multiple times in the small office. He didn't respond, so she told me to have a seat in the waiting area. So I did. Multiple people called the office (seeming to be complaining about not receiving their glasses/contacts) while I was waiting and she responded to all of them, "you didn't get my message?!?!" and then proceeded to tell them that the product has been in their office for some time and that the patient needs to come get it. I didn't think much of it at the time, but we'll come back to that. While waiting after my eye exam, the same employee told me that my insurance would cover some contacts, so I ordered them. I asked about having them shipped to me. The employee told me it'd be extra to ship them, but she could leave them at the front desk of the Kenmore, which has concierge 24/7. I told her that would work perfectly, as my boss lives in the apartment complex and could pick them up for me and bring them to work. She agreed to do this and told me she'd call me once my contacts came in and that it'd likely take ~3 business days. I re-confirmed there'd be no issue with having my boss pick them up for me. More than a week passed and I hadn't heard anything from the office. I randomly happened to be at the Kenmore late one evening and the Kenmore front desk concierge confirmed my contacts still weren't there. I called the office 13 days after ordering and told the same female employee that I was checking to see if my contacts had arrived, as I still hadn't heard anything. She responds, "you didn't get my message?!?!" While having a flashback to the phone calls that came in during my appointment, I told her I did not receive any type of message/call and then explained how I even checked with the Kenmore concierge the other night to no avail. She then begins scolding me about how I needed to tell her that the contacts should be left at the concierge desk. I told her that I did, in fact, tell her at the appointment and then reminded her of our conversation about my plan for my boss to pick them up for me. She then agreed to leave them at the concierge desk for me. I text my boss that my contacts are in and asked if she could bring them to work with her. When I get to work, my boss gives me the contacts and explained how the same female employee screamed at her as well. My boss said that she didn't know I meant the concierge desk and instead went into the office to get the contacts. When my boss told the female employee what she was picking up, the employee began screaming at her as well. My boss said the employee then screamed, "I TOLD YOU! THEY'RE AT THE DESK!" while pointing out of the office. My boss had to tell her, again, that she was just doing me a favor and to stop screaming at her. The employee continued to scream and my boss ended up leaving the office. How. Freaking. Embarrassing. I'm sure my boss won't be doing any favors for me again! read more

In spite of the distance from my home in Alexandria VA, I've been seeing Dr Kaplan for my eye care needs over 30 years. His eyeglass prescriptions have always been exactly right. He and his friendly low-key staff are always a pleasure to interact with. I have purchased both my eyeglasses and contact lenses there; they have been perfect, stylish and competitively priced, even with thin lightweight progressive "invisible bifocal" lenses. Unlike many medical professionals, he takes the interest and time to fine-tune his prescription to how I use my eyes (including my specialized professional needs) and has risen to the challenge of keeping me happy and comfortable in contact lenses, through various systems as my eyes have changed over the years. If only I could find an internist half as satisfactory as Dr. Kaplan! read more

I've been going to Dr. Kaplan for years. I started using him after another eye doctor gave me a prescription that gave me severe headaches. Dr. Kaplan gave me contacts that were one eye for near vision, one for far vision. Now I wear only glasses and Dr. Kaplan has been great with those as well. I feel silly saying this, but there's just no other word for it. Going to Dr. Kaplan's office was magical. He is so funny, helpful, caring and curious about his patients. He answered all of my questions and made me laugh uncontrollably. He gave great advice. My whole visit, I was thinking about how lucky I was to have found him. His colleague Monique helped me pick out a pair of frames and she was so delightful. After my eye exam, while I was picking frames, one of Dr. Kaplan's patients knocked on the door and said "hey can I just ask you something?" and Dr. Kaplan took him into his ofice and checked out his eyes. I think the patient's insurance covered the exam, but Dr. Kaplan was just so accomodating and friendly to him. He's the man. read more

Dr. Kaplan is odd, yes, but I have to say, he is EXCELLENT. He knows his business and does a complete exam. He explains everything he is going to do to the nth degree. He has checked the eyes of all four of my children, each with different issues. I love that it is a boutique office, yes small, so they know you. Great selection of frames and the front desk assistant is AMAZING! Love her. The complainers are missing out on a fabulous doctor, more appointments available for me and my family!
