Voodoo Donuts: A Letdown in Doughnut Delight When it comes to doughnuts, I'm a bit of a connoisseur, and I must say, my recent visit to Voodoo Donuts in Eugene was, unfortunately, a disappointment. While their quirky, offbeat charm usually hits the mark, this time, the doughnuts themselves fell flat. I tried their seasonal offering - a vanilla with espresso doughnut - and it turned out to be quite lackluster. The doughnut was overly soft, lacking the chewy, satisfying bite that I look for in a good doughnut. Moreover, the flavors were muted, and the espresso note was hardly discernible. However, I would like to point out that the service was commendable. The staff member was friendly and courteous, always wearing a smile. He was quite persuasive and sold me on the seasonal flavor with such enthusiasm that I couldn't resist giving it a try. As for the ambiance, it was quieter and less lively than I expected. Unlike the usual bustling atmosphere, it felt empty which was a bit of a letdown. I fondly remember their Vegan Gay Bar, a cream-filled doughnut crowned with Froot Loops, which was always a treat. I wish they'd bring that delightful concoction back. In the end, Voodoo Donuts has the potential to deliver. However, this visit was a miss. I moved back to Eugene recently, and my friend took me on a tour of local hot spots to get me reacquanited with my home town. Voodoo was one of those places. I've lived various places in the US, and the way she built this place up I was expecting donut perfection. What I got was marketing perfection - they really know how to create an experience, and have a lot of fun concoctions, definitely creative and pushing the envelope of donut technology. But, if what you really care about is the actual donut and not the toppings, they fall short. I have to stress here that I do not love top-heavy sugary confections, so I'm not really their target consumer. I am also not a fancy donut lover, so for me it was a very "meh" experience, because the donut iself was not that great, and (in my opinion) was overpriced. However, I don't regret going, because I had a lot of fun marveling over their creations and seeing other patrons enjoy donuts I would never have the courage to eat, like one with bacon on it. (shudder!) I give it three stars because I feel it's one of those "go once for the experience" places for me, but not something I would return to. read more

I stopped by this donut shop for the first time while visiting from out of state, and I'm so glad I did. The donuts were fantastic, but what really stood out to me was the incredible service. There was one woman working behind the counter who truly impressed me. I didn't catch her name, but she was handling everything with so much care and energy. You could tell she was working hard.. juggling multiple orders, keeping things moving, and still taking the time to greet everyone with a genuine smile. Even as a first-time customer just passing through, she made me feel welcome, like I was a regular. If I ever find myself back in the area, I'll definitely be coming back. Not just for the donuts, but because of people like her who make the experience that much better. read more

What can one say about Voodoo Doughnut that hasn't already been said? Oh, okay: The Eugene location is far less busy than either Portland shop. That's probably because Tony Bourdain didn't stop here. But the doughnuts are just as good (yes, I've tried One, Too and Tres), and you won't have to stand out in the rain for half an hour to get them. My favorite? The Memphis Mafia. It's a monster. Don't plan on eating it alone, unless you're really, really hungry. Remember, this place is cash only. And it's right downtown, so parking is at a premium. Walk, bike, take mass transit (Eugene Station is less than two blocks away). A little exercise may assuage any guilt pangs you might feel over all those delicious calories. read more

Kitschy, pop culture, wow factor, and shock value all come to mind when I think voodoo donuts. What doesn't come to mind is a particularly good donut. Not that they are BAD, if nothing else their volume all but assures a fresh donut each and every time. But it's just that everyone wants to see the weird-ass donuts here and the truth is Dizzy Deans in town is an infinitely better stop for donuts. I'd give them a 4, because again it IS a good donut and all, BUT the cash only register paired with a heavy surcharge ATM in the back is just straight up a crappy thing to do to your customers. It's tacky, crass, and a good way to make sure THIS GUY only comes when relatives ask them to take them. read more

Visited: frequently BRING CASH, especially if you want to score a souvenir (hat, t-shirt, hoodies, etc).  This is why I selected "moderate" for price range. With that minor criticism out of the way, I must confess that I adore the Voodoo Donuts.  My husband really liked the one with crumbled oreos on top, while I liked the one with chocolate and peanut butter.  If you want to taste the donut that made this place famous, try the voodoo doll donut, complete with raspberry filling and a pretzel "needle" so you can stab your voodoo doll. You may have to wait in line, but it is well worth the wait for the experience! The line is very short compared to the one in Portland! read more

Honestly, I think this place is pretty creepy. I really didn't appreciate the satanic symbol or the private part shaped donuts... Just creepy and gross. The donuts were pretty yummy except the ones with cereal on top. If you like stale cereal you would love these, but I'm not a huge fan. The donuts themselves were really great besides that I'm just not a fan of the message they give out personally. Definitely not family friendly but it seems to be a hub for college students. So, I guess it depends on what you are looking for. read more

Don't go there in the morning. I was told that the donuts are not fresh; they are made the day before. I went in to test that, and my donut was hard, like it had been sitting out overnight. I don't recommend them; they used to be really good, but now they taste bad and rushed. Also, when waiting for them to pack the order, I saw that the floors were a complete mess, like they don't even try to clean them. Employee high on their shift I was walking to Voodoo Donuts. While walking, I smelled the smell of Devils Lettuce.. I saw a girl smoking it. I didn't think much of it. When I went inside the shop, I watched the same girl who was smoking the devil Lettuce. come into the shop and clock back in. I view that to be very unprofessional. I guess management doesn't care about workers being high on the clock. Voodoo you guys need to do better read more

The donuts here are OK but I think they are over rated. Some the local shops have better donuts and I don't need to worry about my 11 year old daughter asking about the phallic shaped options. It is a little prudish, but my daughter doesn't need to see this when we go into a doughnut shop. The staff should keep these options in a place where young children are not exposed to this adult theme. read more

I would give it 5 stars if the employees that work there would have more of a personality and not have music blaring that every other word is f*** this! also selection is limited like the other reviewer says. I've never been a fan of this place because the service and quality are so poor. Last time I was in there I found a cockroach under a stack of papers. Absolutely disgusting! Do you like fighting for parking? Being harassed by the homeless? How about a dark dirty dining atmosphere? Would you be willing to overlook these factors for cold stale doughnuts? Neither would I. Good late night doughnuts, not a good variety unless you show up very early??? sells out quick. Staff is okay, seems your are inconveniencing them if you do not know what you want, right away even when you are the only customer in there... Not really sure what the hype is all about. There's nothing special about them to wait half an hour in line. You can buy cheap buckets of doughnuts that are a few hours old but they are just the unpopular doughnuts obviously. Bacon Maple bars and gummy worm donuts are TOO awesome to not mention! There can be a really long line, but they are open late. If you are out at one of the bars downtown at night, it is a great place to get food that is away from the feral street kids asking for money and smokers. read more
