Sweetness overload. Once you get beyond the names and the "cool" flavors, there's nothing all that amazing. It's pretty much, dump more cereal, chocolate, peanut butter, oreos, or any other dessert topping on there. No refinement; just brute force in what feels like directly injecting a sucrose solution into your veins. We swung by Eugene on our way from the Bay Area to Seattle, and tried out this Oregonian "institution." I'm glad we had it here vs. in Portland because I would've been ticked if I had to wait for an hour for this stuff. We ordered the bacon maple donut, the Old Dirty Bastard, and the dirt donut - all of which could give diabetes to a young child (apologies if you're actually dealing with this disease, as it's not my intention to make light of it). It's also not cheap. Maybe their normal donuts are better, but I ain't standing in line to get standard cake and sugar donuts. In Portland, we got Blue Star, which has more interesting flavors and tastier donuts. Even Top Pot in Seattle tastes better despite being a little boring. Voodoo is overrated, but hey, people watch WWE and will vote for Trump, so not everyone goes for refined taste. read more

But I promise you, when In the Portland area there's plenty of great donut shops. However this is the Eugene location (and I have no idea of the Eugene donut options). If you want to know how good a chef is, you order their simplest dish. Why? So that you can see technique, so you can see how good of a chef that person it. So when I went to Voodoo, I did just that. I was curious to know if their doughnuts were truly the best, or if it was the sugar high that led people to believe such a thing. My old fashion doughnut was hard, heavy and the glaze was grainy from sugar. It's easy to overload something and if one element isn't right, no one notices due to the distraction of everything else. You'll miss out on the iconic neon sign and the giddyness of waiting along the golden brick wall in the heart of the bustling Portland downtown district. In turn this location has a jolly piano and a more townlike vibe that I just found to be more endearing. But parking is easier, the crowds are softer, and the doughnuts are the same. I got VD in Eugene. At first I was hesitant to endorse Voodoo in the Emerald Valley. I had been to their place in downtown Portland before and left a little disappointed. Grumpy staff and lackluster doughnut options can do that to you, especially after waiting in line an hour next to a hentai theater. However, I'm convinced that the new shop in the EUG is for the win. I like that Voodoo opted to open in a depressed part of downtown. Doughnuts and food carts now have the potential to create a scene in Kesey Square. Some dipshit urban planner may still have his or her dream realized of a public space that's family friendly, not a gathering place for NA dropouts. The doughnuts are fresh, chewy, and delicious. They have a few vegan options and the counter staff is friendly. My only beef is that nothing is uniquely Eugene at this point, they don't even have any promotional materials that say Eugene, it's all Portland centric. Yes, there is a Eugene cream, but it's the Portland cream with maple topping. Step it up! If you're looking for a recommendation though I'd suggest Old Dirty Bastard aka Dirt Mcgirt aka Old Dirty Chinese Restaurant. I hope that the ladies and germs of Holy Donuts and Divine Cupcake can survive with another sweetiserie in town. The third of anything is (almost) never as good as the original. I can't think of a few cinematic exceptions, but generally speaking most people would agree this is true. So when I learned that Voodoo had opened up in my childhood stomping ground, I was excited, but cautious. Could this be the exception to the rule of 3? I was not optimistic. The Memphis Mafia, when done correctly, is pure heaven. A banana fritter, covered in Peanut Butter and Chocolate. I was craving one so badly that I made my husband venture into downtown (where he had never really been, being a California native) in search of doughnuts. Unfortunately, when he returned my worst fear was confirmed. What I got, rather than the light fluffy banana fritter I had expected, was a regular old apple fritter covered in peanut butter and chocolate. Delicious? Yes, but not what I had been craving. The maple bacon bar was still good, but just not the same. The Old Dirty Bastard, however, pretty much lived up to expectation. But then again, you can go wrong with oreo's and peanut butter. I grabbed my selections (mostly cake, mostly covered in cereal) and headed back to my hotel to eat them in front of the fireplace. THIS WAS SO EXCITING. I WAS SO EXCITED. I didn't even care about the many vagrants who were forcefully trying to grab the doughnuts from my hands as I walked out of the store, screaming things like "can I trade you this joint for your pink box?" because I had waited too many years to have this moment tainted. I get back to the hotel, throw on my pajamas, and I bite into the chocolate cake with cocoa puffs. My entire life was leading up to this very doughnut. It was stale. So I try the vanilla cake. Stale. How about the one with powdered sugar? STALE. How could this be? How could the place who wrote the book on crazy doughnut flavors sell such crappy doughnuts?
