You know you are in trouble when you are grabbing donuts at 1am! Is it because of your stomach? Is it because you didn't eat anything? Or is it because someone placed a curse on us all. Does someone hold our strings and tell us what to do? If so, that person holding our strings are telling us a great thing. Whatever ritual they have placed on us, lead us the dangerous, but so filling home of Voodoo Doughnuts in Denver.
After arriving from Denver and checking into our hotel, my fiance and I roam the streets of Denver at 1am. The nightlife is booming at the "Mile-High" City. We were craving food and not because of a medicinal nature. We wanted to visit the famous donuts that we heard about in Oregon. We welcome Voodoo Doughnuts in our Denver trip.
Located on the south side of E Colfax near the Park Ave/Franklin St. intersection, you will find the pink building with a logo with a man and a top hat. We had parked a few block to the west at a famous kitchen. Most residents know what that kitchen is. So, parking is very limited in the area. You may have to find a spot in the surrounding area. Before you walk in, you will notice a line before you even get in. Voodoo already has poles to control the crowds since they are open 24/7. Please note that they will HIGHLY emphasize that they are a CASH BUSINESS ONLY! However, there is an ATM onsite. Glad, we had cash because this trip would have been a very short trip.
When we walked in, it was so busy! So much going on. High emphasize on Bob Marley though. You will see the menu board with the many offerings that Voodoo Doughnuts has to offer. The much more interesting thing is the display case of the donuts going in circles. They will definitely make you go in trance and forget about a lot of things. Someone got us out of that trance and his name was Raymond. Raymond was a pleasure to be our Voodoo server of the early morning. He was EXTREMELY helpful with our selection. My fiance got a couple seducing items. She got the Voodoo Double Bubble ($1.75) and Grape Ape ($1.75). Just like my fiance, when you come in to a place that has the name Voodoo, you have to order something with the name. I got myself the Voodoo Doll ($2.25) and an Arnold Palmer ($1.30). An Arnold Palmer?! That sounds crazy!
Before getting to the review of the doughnuts, the wait was about 20 minutes and AT 1AM! I see that the ordering process is long because of many people who are not familiar with the doughnut ingredients. Some of us had to visit the website to see what they were. However, you will have the one customer ask many questions about each doughnut. However, each doughnut is served fresh. With each freshness, they don't stay great that long. So, Raymond suggested that you put them in the refrigerator when you get these bad boys home.
Now onto the doughnuts! I don't know where to begin. I loved the Arnold Palmer! Taste of the vanilla frosting with sweet tea and lemonade sugar n a cake doughnut. Don't know why there is a cereal "O" on it though. Many hours later, my fiance had me try her Voodoo Double Bubble. OK, I don't know how they did it, but it tastes like BUBBLEGUM! Gum on a doughnut?! Normally, I would expect it under my shoe, but never on a doughnut! Next up is the signature, Voodoo Doughnut Doll. Although it is dangerous, it is so SWEET! Each Voodoo Doll looks different. For some reason, mine looked like I had two cooked eggs as buttons and white beard. Could it be Santa? So, I broke the arms off and gave it agony before taking off the pretzel that is stabbing it's neck. What is it filled with?! Not blood, but raspberry jelly! So GOOD!
After visiting Voodoo Doughnut, it wasn't because the doughnuts that I want to come back, but it was because of Raymond. I told him that we just arrived and welcomed us to both Denver and Voodoo. He gave us extra doughnuts to take home. Yes! Take home to SoCal. BTW, doughnuts are allowed on airplanes to take home. Raymond is one of the many friendliest people in Denver that we've met. When our total came out to $7 and change, we were surprised. We used the change to give as a tip. If you are in Denver, bookmark Voodoo Doughnuts, you'll be taken in one way or another!
