So, here's the thing, it doesn't really seem to matter when you come here, there are almost never any vegan donuts, which is insane, because AT LEAST half of their schtick is " ermagerd we have vegan donuts!!!" I've been here at least half a dozen times at all hours of the day (truly--2a, 6a, 8p, 10p) and even when I have called ahead to make sure they have vegan donuts, they don't have what I want when I go (which is to say they'll have like a single Oreo donut left when I get there 30min later, which is how long it takes me to get there). Only ONCE have I gone and gotten everything I wanted, and I believe it was a Tuesday in the middle of the day (and I had called ahead that time, too). When a TON of your business is done on your vegan donuts that taste literally no different than your non-vegan versions, maybe up the amount of vegan ones you make? For one, I'm certain they wouldn't have trouble selling, and two, not a single person who eats dairy and egg regularly would know they're getting something accidentally vegan, because they're THAT good. But no, instead they're CONSTANTLY out and just have whatever sad lone vegan donut is on their display carousel to offer you basically all the time.
Last night was sort of a last straw for me, in that I'll only go back if someone else/a visiting guest wants to go. I went in just before 6a, which for every other donut place on the planet is PRIME donut time, but they had almost nothing, vegan or regular, of course. Also, when I walked in, there wasn't a single solitary soul to be seen in the store behind the counter area (not that there was anyone else anywhere else, either). I stood there for at least 5min before I finally sort of hollered "Hello?" toward the work area. Still, no one came for about a minute, and I was actually turning to walk out when a dude FINALLY moseyed out from the back. And that's the thing with this place: almost no one there is EVER in any kind of hurry. The first time we went, they were slammed (2a on a Sat), so the staffer worked with ~some~ expedience, but since then, I've only gotten people on their own time. Which is usually ok, but, like, could they at LEAST be at the register when you come in??? Anyway, this morning, I got a vegan grape ape, which I really wanted (it's so good, seriously--I thought it sounded weird and gross, but was given one via misunderstanding last time and I sometimes find myself thinking about it in the middle of the day at random), and the PB Oreo one, and I left the regular sad Oreo one for someone else. But these people only had a SINGLE GLAZED DONUT IN THE ENTIRE STORE! How is that possible!? The guy said they were low on everything because they "hadn't gotten [their] truck yet," so I asked when it usually comes, so I'd have a better chance of getting what I came there for. He said he couldn't tell me, because they come pretty much whenever they want, there's no real schedule. I've worked in food service before...there was ALWAYS a schedule for our trucks, but maybe this is a carry over of the lack of haste everyone who works there seems to have. Additionally, I went ahead and got 2 maple bars, the lone glazed (as mentioned), and 3 Portland (Bavarian filled), and had one of the maple bars, while someone else in the house had the other. The last time I had the maple bars, I had the vegan ones, which were DELICIOUS, and filled with lots of delicious vegan cream. There was not a single drop of cream to be had in these. And it's not like these were so old the cream had soaked into the pastry either, because there wasn't even a cavity or cavities where it should have been. They just flat out weren't filled. The maple topping was great, but it's not enough to carry a huge doughy donut, ya know?
After my trek all the way down here, I ended up going to the delicious and always reliable Round Rock Donuts to get the rest of the glazed I needed that others had asked for in my order. Honestly, today, I should've just gone there. It's WAY closer, and the folks are always crazy friendly AND fast.
If you're going for vegan donuts and they have a good amount, do yourself a favor and get the grape ape, the maple bar, and the Portland. They're all a delight. Oreo & PB is also a combo I thought would be weird but actually works, but be warned how sweet it is...it's a once in a while thing. As for other non-vegan things, my roomie likes their gay bar, my husband has been pleased with their plain glazed. We did not like their Homer, I had a taste of a cake donut in a mix we got that was weird and off, and their apple fritter is 99.9% old grease flavored fritter with the apple being nearly impossible to find.
Parking is almost always a nightmare, but having a handicripple permit helps, and, this morning, I was able to park right in front. Also, Homeless folks abound in this area, so consider carrying extra small bills (since this place is cash only anyway), socks, gloves, or non perishables and help out where you can. read more
