This store definitely needs some new carts. I spend the first 5 minutes that I'm in the store trying to find a cart that doesn't have messed up wheels! Earlier this year I gave Von's Bakery Dept. in Grover Beach rave reviews with good reason. But now it is time to say that store management and some employees need to be accountable for disrespecting customers and/or selling mis-labeled food products. When I took back a receipt for a rotisserie chicken that was overcooked and shriveled, the female employee at the front desk wanted to know if I brought the chicken back. Really? When I could not produce the chicken, she reluctantly (as if the money was coming out of her pocket) issued a refund. And last week I bought Lucerne Grade AA Large 18 Pack Eggs. Imagine my dismay when I started to make a cake recipe that called for 4 large eggs, and I found these so-called large eggs were definitely not Large, as defined by the USDA. I had to fiddle with the recipe and ended up using 5 of these so-called large eggs to get the equivalent of 4 Large eggs. How does Lucerne get away with this? I won't be taking these back because I fear I might encounter the same unhappy female employee at the front desk who might expect me to have brought back the eggs and the chicken that laid them. Do Von's employees receive continuing training or does the store manager consider everything fine? Does he read on-line reviews to identify possible areas of improvement? read more

I've been shopping here since 2008, usually such a nice staff, very clean and welcoming. I called customer service over the phone tonight... I was just there! I was un-bagging at home, and I noticed I was missing an item. The bagger didn't put the item in my bag (my personal bag) that I had paid for, and that is clearly on my receipt. Which, hey, it happens! :) & we are human... plus the bagging staff is so nice... but when I called customer service to let them know- the gentleman over the phone said he was too busy and to call back later... as I'm making dinner. I asked him to "please call me back" when "he is not busy" respectfully. He declined, along with a huge sigh then "call back later," I then said "I will never shop here again, this is terrible customer service- is there a manager I can speak with?" Then "CLICK." I only shop here when I need that one thing the reasons I don't shop here for everything is because the prices are so high, it's hard to find anything in the store, the bakery usually is well stocked with stuff that is what the 2 stars are for. Just returned to this Vons after refusing to shop here based on their pet-friendly policies- they will look the other way on any animal brought in. I'm no animal hater, but a grocery store, where people are touching the food including the produce is just disgusting. Sometimes shopping at a big chain supermarket can be impersonal and uneventful experience BUT at my Vons on Grand the employee really go out of their way to make my shopping trip extremely satisfying, they care about my wants and needs, they always greet me with a friendly smile & welcoming words, APRIL in the meat department is extra helpful, she makes excellent suggestions and recommendations, the other day I was on the hunt for pork neck bones to make pozole, unfortunately they don't sell very well in this area, April suggested I use pork ribs & helped cut them to just the right size! ROXY is my favorite cashier and gets the lines cleared out quickly and WILLIAM is always helpful whether it be helping me locate an item or adjustments when certain items are unavailable-and I don't know the name of the employee in the fruit and vegetables area but I feel he went above and beyond when questioned about the cut up watermelon,he actually let me taste it and decide for myself rather than lie to me (it was sweet which was a pleasant surprise in high winter) I realize they're employees but my family & I have come to think of them as friends as well! I am a regular here. I come to vons for all of my grocery needs. The employees are always super friendly and helpful. They have great selection of fresh organic fruits and vegetables. Delicious baked goods from the bakery. The deli is loaded with awesome selection of different fresh foods. And an added extra perk, they have Starbucks and jamba! read more

The other major supermarket in the area was taken over by that expensive place so I have to drive to San Luis Obispo to do most of my supermarket shopping. Out of necessity I've been coming to Vons a bit more than I used to for the deals, but I read over my previous review and find it still stands. I still have to look carefully at who is at the register in order to avoid an unpleasant experience. My family and I avoid the bakery after bad customer service there. We avoid the deli (same problem) unless it's something quick like a breakfast wrap. We shop very early in the morning to avoid the clientele and to have a chance at accessing the milk and eggs in their crowded unlabeled corner. Any chance the expensive place across town is on its way out and we'll get a decent inexpensive supermarket in its place? I sure hope so because recently I've been seeing much more of Vons than I'm comfortable with. My new list of grievances starts: the other day when I was there I asked a young woman stocking items in the refrigerated deli section, "Do you know where this smoked salmon is that you have on sale? It says deli pack." She said, "Uuuummmmm, in the deli." Oh Vons, thank you so much for another excellent customer service experience. read more

Without the other grocery Store vacated by Hoggan and Albertson's, you would expect the Vons store to step up and add some gourmet items. But really it's catering to the Pismo crowd lower and no gray cheeses mediocre fruit. Even going in at 11 PM at night there were lines and I need to open another register. You would think with the added volume of business because of the shortage of grocery stores this chain would step up and increase their support and staffing but they have obviously chosen not to do this. This review is for the bakery; i give 1 star because i went in to get a cake made for my boyfriend's daughter who was turning 9, and i requested they put a picture of the group One Direction on it. The lady said they cannot do it because of copyright issues. She says if One Direction were to find out they used their pic on a cake without permission they could get in trouble. What a joke!! Went a few miles away to Arroyo Grande Bakery and they made the cake with the pic of One Direction on it with no problem at all!! I've been here for 6 months and have not noticed this Vons being as crowded as some of these reviewers make it seem. I've been at random hours, and yes I notice it's busy late at night on the weekends, mainly because they only have one cashier and they're THE only grocery store in the 5 cities open until midnight, 7 days a week. And the late store hours make it the most convenient store to go to in the area. There is always a decent selection here, although I've yet to find a perfect grocery store in the area that has everything I want. But for what's around here, Vons is the best. read more

I don't love grocery shopping here because the organization. It can be a little confusing to find what you are looking for and the bread selection has much less options then the other stores in the area. It has a good meat selection and deli area has been efficient when i've accessed it. They let the lines get a little too long without opening other checkouts though. read more

Don't bother showing up to get a sandwich. They may not have staff that knows how to do them. Stopped by today at 6 o'clock to get one of their big sandwiches. None were out, so I asked and the response was "no we won't have any because nobody here knows how to make them". What??? Nobody knows how to make a sandwich?? Along with Trader Joe's, this is my go-to store for getting groceries. At first, I thought that the prices were a little high, but once I started using their online app (and they mail me coupons too!), it helped A LOT. I'm seriously in love their produce -- never bought anything that hasn't been perfectly fresh and lasted a long time. In fact, I'm eating the most amazing Vons watermelon right now. I also love their selection of vegetarian frozen items. The staff is not overly friendly, but I typically don't need much help, so I'm okay with that. read more

i had an amazing shopping experience yesterday at vons grocery store in grover beach. i went in feeling a little like thanksgiving. i approached the deli, and was greated immediately by the clerk. i ask for the best turkey for sandwiches. She had me taste a sample and it was perfect. I ask her to direct me to the cranberry sauce,she did..my shopping was complete. **Review for deli** Their deli has some of the best sandwiches in the county, and for half the price of most sandwich places. The service is just okay. They're almost always busy so there's usually a bit of a wait. There's also some inconsistency depending on who makes the sandwich. Closest Starbucks location to the Oceano Dunes Camp Site. It takes about 15 minutes from camp to the store. That's super cool about camping at Pismo not like Glamis. You can slip out for restaurants and grocery stores while on your trip. Makes for less packing. Vons has everything including hot deli food to go. I'd be up early and back to camp with coffee from Starbucks and fresh donuts and muffins from the bakery. read more

My fiancé and I shop in Vons almost every day-we are currently between homes and having to stay at a hotel, so we have little room for storing or preparing food. We stop by each evening to get what we need for snacks or dinner. Always a pleasant experience, the store is immaculate, employees are friendly and helpful and the produce is fresh and reasonable. We even got to try some new variety of apples due to the helpfulness of Cody in the produce department. The cashiers always interact with smiles and light conversation, considerate of our waiting time and patient with us fumbling around in our pockets for correct change. My go to grocery store. They have really great sales. Most of the staff is very friendly. The store is very clean. We live right around the corner and come here often. Usually there are not enough cashiers and I get a bit grumpy. The other day I went there for balloons and this wonderful customer service representative named Heather helped me and she was so wonderful! She helped me get 18 balloons blown up quickly and even helped me to my car. She was awesome. I will keep coming here but I really wish they would hire more cashiers. read more

So here's the deal.... this vons is pretty clean, organized and well stoked. But here is why I gave it a 2 out of 5 stars. My right hand is damaged and it is really hard for me to carry bags of groceries home. (I walk to and from the grocery store by the way.) so, I wear I little backpack so I can stuff my food and walk out without having the trouble of walking with my bad hand of groceries home. But today, I was followed around the store for over 20 minutes. And when I left the store, I was stopped (really rude) by there manager (I'm guessing) and he told me to never come back with a backpack on. Now, I understand, it's shady. But I wasn't dressed like "a typical shoplifter" or anything. And when I tried to explain it to him about my hand, he shook his head and walked away. While I was walking away from the store, he kept looking at me. He stood there and just looked at me. Now I do understand it maybe shady, go about it a different way. Don't stop traffic to talk to me like that, and to walk away without even hearing my reasons, that's even worse. Dangerous to stop traffic for that. That is why I gave it 2 out of 5. read more

Amanda in the Flower Shop ROCKS. Went to a local flower shop Grand Bouquet Flowers in Grover - horrible experience, rude owner, i left. I thought why not Von's they have awesome arrangements in that section. Went in, met Amanda, told her my story - she said "oh you're not the first with that experience", and took my order - easy, flexible, friendly. Picked it up and she floored me with her creative work even more than expected. Lovely and perfect! Flower Gal inside the Von's in Grover. My go-to almost daily store for groceries, meats, Chase Bank, pharmacy, bakery, deli, liquor, you name it. Great staff too: love Roxie, Crystal, Jennie, Steve, David, Judy, Jim, and of course Fred in produce. I don't do Starbucks but they have one if you want, and the juice bar. Floral is very good for arrangements and potted plants. Small peeves: Fred can't get yellow crookneck or patty-pan squash; the bakery stopped selling the delicious croissant/donuts for no apparent reason--"corporate" the baker told me, and they run out of the small milks way too often. Kudos: they managed to get rid of the panhandlers in the parking lot, the young healthy types with a cardboard sign....good riddance. Overall a good store in these times that are so unstable for grocery stores. read more

I agree with Cathy. I shop at this Vons a lot. It is convenient and I prefer the produce dept. over Smart and Final's. I also agree that there needs to be some sort of crack down on service animals. Who knows where they have been. They should definitely not be allowed to ride in the cart. There may something on their fur, paws, or other parts of their body. Also why do grocery stores not consider the rights of shoppers who may have pet related allergies. It should be a no brainer that while Vons and other stores may have to allow service animals, there should be rules that the owners of service animals should have to comply with. read more
