Great service the gentleman with the combat boots and handlebar mustache with glasses was super helpful. He inquiredif I was finding everything okay while stocking. Since there were no calzones. Customer service is terrible, I told the cashier there was a product I didn't need and she looked at me so confused I would and had like she could not be bothered I would of put it away but the store was closed. There is something interesting products here that are cute, some of their freezer section wasn't fully stocked and it was hard to find some of their items. read more

The prices. The options, The service. The food choices are great but you have to be health conscious to pick the right foods for your specific lifestyle. I choose this place over any other grocery store because they have organic veggies and meat at a fraction of the cost of other grocery stores. Aldi has some brand names, if you're into that, but at the same time, if your find yourself struggling during this economy, then The service is great and their system with the grocery carts is so structured and organized. Keep a quarter handy because you'll need it to release the cart. Once you check out the empty cart belonging to the customer ahead of you becomes yours and is filled with your product as it is scanned by the cashier. After you pay you take the cart and move to the bagging area where you bag your own items. Once you get to your car and unload, you take the cart back to the carting station outside and line it up and connect it with the other carts which then releases the cart and your quarter is returned... ingenious! read more

This is a hit or miss, scavenger hunt type of place IMHO. I was excited to visit the new store since I heard it was a German cousin of Trader Joe's. I was expecting more imported goods such as what you can find in TJ. Instead, most selections were domestic and the variety of every thing was slim. This is a find place to stop by if you are in the mood to be surprised. You may find some cheap salad dressing or a random cookie you like. Overall, I would not go out of my way to visit this store. ALDI is like a "FAKE" supermarket [hint: a play on fake news]. I was expecting some great German oriented bargain mart...and well... all we got.... was like a very few items, and some nice conversations, with some other fellow disappointed disoriented oldsters...also looking in vain for ethnic stuff. I directed a nice English couple, who were looking for a specially butchered Pork-skin Shoulder, to the amazing Arroyo Grande Meat Co. up in the Village, when another mature man overheard me rave about their amazing home-smoked Pork-chops. Sadly, the only German stuff I could find here were some seasonal overpriced cookies. Most of the stuff is crap... like Chinese Garlic...which is likely to have up to 30 pesticides, including DDT maybe [based on a Canadian study on herbs & other recent studies that find large levels of lead in Chinese Tea...from all the new cars, leaded Gasoline, & "Clean...Beautiful...Coal" [from the lips of the Orange Maroon]]. HINT- Gilroy is right up the road....for Rumps-sake! Come to think of it, this store should be Make AMERica Gag Again... what total crap. The portions are small, so even with lower supermarket prices, they are fooling you with any big savings. While I now despise Amazon's Craptastic Rip-off Organic Market, this place makes me reconsider every other place, especially Trader Smoes. Cal-Fresh & Lassens are also rip offs...so that leaves the bargain stores & the amazing Debu Filipino store on Price street. Now that I have gotten rid of my urge to go to WF or Lassen's....I now pick Smart & Final, Grocery Outlet, Food for Less, Costco, & a few other places...even J&J's. Von's is only good for wine & flowers BTW. Beyond some nice staff & some friendly quirky customers, half the crowd in the store, sported either the Walmart/Homeless look with ill-fitting outfits, or looked as bewildered as us. I never left a supermarket with so little, after looking at all products. I bought one huge Papaya, a some ultra-cheap wine [like 2-buck chuck...but in a Moscato form], two bottles of sparkling Apple Juice, & Baklava of all things. As you will notice, there is no meat monger, fishmonger, cheesemonger, bread-monger, nor other monger... except for the dreaded kart-mongers. Even though I read on-line about the pack you own issue [not a problem with so little], the "bargains" [bananas... like Amazon does at WF...but inorganic or 79 cent Eggs... from back East...why not Los Osos?], I was ill prepared for the kart rules & directions. It took two check out people to get my stupid head around on how to switch karts properly....yes I am a "dumb-liberal" LOL. I also got a stern look from the outside kart boss, who looked at me with disgust after I said... Oh crap....a QUARTER...holly crap, I read about this...but who carries those useless round things around, when we have chips? Fortunately a smart kind lady customer handed me a whole QUARTER for free...lucky me! I have not had the need to use pocket change [nor pocket pool :) ] for eons....stopped bothering with that crap since the demise of the pay phone...yes, I am even more ancient than that...I programmed computers with punchcards... watched Black & White TV of the Moon Walk...horrid death in Vietnam...but I digress....why don't you just have that guy who watches you screw up the kart...just go get the damned kart back from you. I would even give the guy a damned dollar or at least a swig of my "Thunderbird-ish" hobo wine for that. The best thing was getting, what I think was, a Grand opening GENUINE FREE ALDI BAG ...which is quite a nice bag.... even nicer than TJ's or WF.... Amazon's WF never gave me a damned free bag yet...even after twenty thousand dollars or so. Last time I went, I got a whole 30 cents off for being a fool Prime member, who waste 1/2 hour of my valuable time to download their crappy SH*t-app. One has a crappy Fake discount app and the other is a Fake supermarket....so it evens out. Conclusion: Unless you a desperate for the few crap-tastic "bargains" like old 79 cent poor caged tortured chicken eggs from 2,000 miles away... say ADIOS TO ALDI... it is Crap-tastically good! CHINESE GARLIC!!!!!!!!!! specially fortified with 30+ Essential Pesticides & Heavy Metals....lead...arsenic YUM....oh, I almost forgot...get the Fake artificially colored "Real" Salmon. It is not marked Farmed, but some BS... like sustainable... yeah right...at $7.99 lb it is likely also from China. To add insult to real injury, since my wife was hypoglycemic, I grabbed a bottle of some cheap sparkling flavored sugar water to give her. The top flew out of it's metal moorings & hit her on the chin...leaving a red mark. Thank heavens we had glasses on. Of course, I still paid for it...but really? Cashier on 5/16/25 seemed more concerned with chatting with the customer ahead of me than doing his job. He put all of her purchases in the cart and then KEPT CHATTING WITH HER WHILE SHE BAGGED STANDING THERE AT THE REGISTER. He then started doing my groceries - still chatting with her - and put them in the same cart. I objected and he said he had to use the same cart. Yeah, no. He wanted me to pay while she was still standing there blocking the way bagging her groceries. I told him I can't, she's in the way. They continued chatting and had a nice friendly good bye, see you later, and she finally got out of way. In the meantime, the line is getting longer and longer. I finally got to pay. In retrospect, I wish I would have just left and let him put everything back. I told him again that he should have made her move to the bagging area, he said again that he couldn't because we both had to use the same cart!?!? Straight up lie. ALDI prices aren't that great to put up with that kind of terrible service. I hear Food4Less beats them overall, and there's a great ALDI in Santa Maria. read more

I have heard about ALDI from friends that live outside of CA. They raved about the prices and quality of food. I decided to check it out. I will say I was a bit annoyed about the shopping carts. I usually don't have change on me, but thankfully I had a quarter today. You place a quarter in a slot in the cart which will unlock the cart so you can shop. If you return your cart, you get your quarter back. Inside, the store is clean, and the quality of the items looks great. The prices are excellent. I spoke to a store employee about the store and the items. The ALDI items have a money back guarantee. If you hate the item/don't like taste, etc... ALDI will refund your money on the item. So you can basically try things for free. The staff told me they are happy and are paid fairly for their work. I think that is really important not just to support jobs in our community, but to support GOOD jobs in our community. You do have to bag your own groceries. The checker will "check out" the items and place in your cart. You then go to this side area and can then bag the items. It does make the check out process quicker. I think everyone should go in and check it out. Today they had regular eggs for 79 cents a dozen. Organic, cage free brown eggs were 3.79 a dozen. (These are over 5 bucks at Vons). read more

Wow.. Just finished reading the first three reviews right after we returned from Aldi's. Hard to believe we visited the same store. First a concession...the quarter for the cart thing. Even though I get what their trying to do, it's ill advised. Long line to get/return carts which leads to this weird unspoken interaction with those that could simply pass their carts off to whoever needs one yet they would have to give up twenty five cents. As a social experiment, it's through the roof, though. Once you enter the store it gets much better. Amazing prices (avacados are 39 cents, organic baby food pouches are 79 cents, etc) It does remind me a bit like the old "Wacky Package" stickers as the knock off versions of products look almost identical to the products they're copying. Everything we bought was excellent quality and much cheaper than other stores, especially Vons. I really like the fact that there is a seperate area to bag your groceries. It really speeds up the process. Adding Aldi's to the list of grocery stores where we shop. read more

This is a great new addition to the Arroyo Grande area for a larger grocery option with decent prices. Aldi is new to the Central Coast and the store is slightly different than what you would normally see at a larger retailer grocery store. Overall great place to try and see if it meets your grocery needs. Here are the pro's. 1) The shopping center is new with several other retailers within walking distance. (Ice Cream, Burgers, Pizza, Starbucks). The parking lot is decent size. I didn't have any issue parking on a Sunday afternoon. 2) The store is new and clean. 3) The selection of the store caters to the population of the city. Con's: 1) You will pay .25 cents for a cart it is fully refundable but it does slow down the line while people learn the system and struggle. Personally, I just handed off my cart to someone else to avoid waiting in the line to return it for .25 cents and hoped for good Karma for my donation to kindness. 2) The store has a strange layout that is hard to follow. One minute I am looking at bread the next second I can by a camping chair and a box of wine. 3) The store doesn't bag your groceries they have a nice bagging area that does move the check out line quickly. However, it is a struggle for parents with young kids, elderly or those with physical limitations. read more

Aisles seem to be set up so that half of the store is set aside for limited time offerings ranging from specialty food products (German, mostly) to candles and some hardware. No hand baskets, grab a cart (25¢) or find an empty box among the aisles. Strange enough to be interesting and good enough prices to have me coming back. read more

I recently discovered Aldi and I'd have to say I could kick myself for not checking it out earlier. It's a great place to shop! My family usually shops at Vons, because that's what we know, and there is one about 5 minutes from our house. Aldi is a bit more of a drive, but it is worth stopping by whenever we are in the area. The reason is they have excellent prices! Some things are half the price or less than what you'd find them for at Vons. You won't find as wide of a selection as in larger grocery stores, nor will you find very many recognizable "big brand" products, but that's part of how they are able to keep costs so low. I ran across a very informative article recently about just exactly how they are able to have such low prices, and in addition to those factors, there are also things like how a lot of the big brand stuff they do carry is either overstock or discontinued, how most of their displays are basically ready to open and put on the shelves, cutting down on stocking time and manpower need, they go for a minimalist approach to advertising and instore decorations and embellishments, they are open less hours than most other stores, and they staff fewer employees at a time than most other stores. All this adds up to some serious savings for the customer. read more

Hmmm...ALDI, the reviews are seemingly "luke warm" at best, and true to the reviews posted so far that's the exact feeling I had. I'm rating two stars, but would leave another 1/2 star...so a 2 1/2 star rating. The quarter cent deposit for the shopping cart, didn't sit right with this Yelper....why, well...I guess because I don't need to do that at ANY other grocery store in SLO county! Why do I need to go through that here?! Okay...over the shopping cart deposit and into the grocery store that has been "hyped up" in the local area for quite a few months. Expectations are high as I walk through the doors (I'm thinking...something along the lines of a full service Whole Foods, but with a European feel.) Nope, more like a clean "box store" grocery outlet. Ugh! Perhaps all the hype was just too much, because "to represent"...I was expecting much more. Drove to Arroyo Grande while on vacation to check this place out and it was kind of cool. This is a discount supermarket with little to no name brand items, so if you only buy name brand then shop somewhere else. First thing you should know is their shopping carts have a trick to them. You have to put a quarter in to use them and when you are done you lock them back into place and get your quarter back. It makes people return the carts. The store is laid out in a wide open straight forward approach so it is very easy to find whatever you are looking for. The store is super clean and very well stocked with plenty of items to choose from. The store is hailed as the cheapest grocery store around and on a lot of items this is true, but not on everything so be careful and pay attention and don't just grab it all. I enjoyed shopping here and if I lived in the area I would shop here often. read more

Such great low prices on Aldi's store brand items! Lots of amazing deals on fresh produce, too. I have bought whole ripe pineapples for $0.25 each when they were on sale. Their prices on regular produce are always good, but when something is on sale, the price is ridiculously good. Pretty good selection of organic produce too - but that's not as cheap, of course. They probably won't have everything you'll need in every shopping trip, but 90% of the time they will, and 100% of the time you'll pay less for it than you would at other grocery stores. I love shopping at Aldi. If you can get used to bringing a quarter to "rent" your cart (you get the quarter back when you return your cart to the cart corral), you'll love it! read more

New grocery store in town. Very disappointing. Perhaps the poorest selection of any grocery store I've experienced. The meat "department" is smaller than most stores dairy sections. The bread section is slightly bigger than what you'd find at a little country store in the middle of Kansas. The tortilla selection wasn't any better. Two package sizes of corn tortillas. No cilantro. I'm guessing there were many other items missing, but I didn't want to waste any more time. (They don't even play Muzak). If you're looking to pay less and are willing to settle for alternative items to what's on your list - have fun. read more

We had an Aldi in my old town in NC so I knew what kind of store this was. I have to say that this store looks much prettier than the one in old hometown. Brand new, it looked run down and sad. This one is clean and bright but not a lot of options. They have one end cap dedicated to gluten free stuff. Yeah it's not a lot, but the one item they have that makes me shop there? Gluten free cheddar biscuits!! They remind me of the Red Lobster Cheddar bay biscuits which I loved and now I can have them again! If you are planning to use a shopping cart, bring a quarter. You insert it into the cart to unlock and chain and when you return your cart to the chain, you get your quarter back. Very efficient way to not have to round up carts in the parking lot! read more

No frills shopping designed to save you money. Yes, you need to put a quarter in to get your cart. You get it back when you return your cart. This keeps lazy asses from leaving the carts all over the parking lot. Aldi doesn't have to pay someone to retrieve carts and passes the savings on to you. The selection is indeed limited as Aldi is a just "the basics" type of grocery store. Don't expect to find a floral stand, beauty section, or any of the other crap you see at the big grocery chain stores. The meat and produce section isn't the greatest because they don't have butchers and produce clerks. So I would augment shopping at Aldi with trips to farmer's markets, butcher shops, or California Fresh in Pismo. What Aldi does have are great deals on staples. Like German Strawberry Jam for $2. Greek Yogurt 32 oz. for $2.50. Ground Beef for $2.99/lb. The staff has always been helpful and seems well trained at this new store. The checkout process is easy, with the clerk putting your items in the cart so you can bag them yourself on the bagging stand before you leave the store. I am glad to have Aldi in the 5 Cities as it blows fellow discount grocer Food 4 Less out of the water on price and an easy shopping experience. read more

I was excited to check out this new store. For some reason I remember reading about this chain and seem to recall the reporting was positive. I do recall also expecting lower prices. My step-mom's sister shops at this chain in Florida. Well lets just say I'm NOT going back. It was a disappointment. I was confused at first by the check out system for getting a shopping cart. I don't have a change on me, EVER. I was able to grab a cart from someone who was finished shopping. I did return it at the end and got the quarter out. Sort of an ingenious way of keeping carts from getting stolen, if people care about their quarters. The store is new, I don't even mind the color scheme. However the displays and the layout of the aisles and food is really unappealing to me. There seems to be no segmentation, just random. And the display of items is sort of like a mini Costco or Sam's Club idea. Items are left in their shipping boxes and they are stacked on top of each other on these very warehouse style racks. There are very few brands I recognize. I did find a few German products there. That said, the prices were quite good. The produce section was "limp" to be honest. It didn't pop freshness and color. The avocados all looked over ripe and too soft. I did find a good deal on mangos and bought a few. The checkout line moved along pretty good. I figured out I had to bag my own stuff, which reminds me of Winco stores I've shopped at up north when I lived in Redding and also in Washington state. Overall I would say this store doesn't appeal to me. I doubt I will ever be back even if I'm in the area. I'm certainly not driving from SLO just to go shopping there, that's for sure. read more

I know go to aldi's first and buy what I need. I tried their tri tip, whole chicken, burgers. The fruits and veggies are in front. Side of store. They have great prices on jalapeño pepper, cilantro ( which I use a lot and it's fresh and nice aroma). I buy grapes, mangoes and halos. I also get groceries. Milk, eggs, the butter is great. Their bagels and bread are tasty. The one great surprise is that when I cash out with a full cart my bills is up to 45 to 50 for 6 bags of groceries. We do not waste anything. I urge anyone to save money at Aldi. Also they have a good selection of Cabernet, white wine. Give it a chance - it will save you money. Store is nice and clean. I have no major problems with this ALDI. I will although agree with a previous yelper on the produce....it can be improved. Other than that, I've never encountered a real issue here with products or the employees. I do however have HUGE suggestion...PLAY SOME MUSIC! Heard a cool story about this store and how the owner is brothers with the owner of Trader Joe's. How it used to be one store but since the brothers had some disagreements, parted ways. I walked in thinking it would be another cool version of TJ's! The fact that we had to pay a quarter for a basket didn't bother me, I get what they are trying to accomplish by that. The wide aisles didn't bother me either. Found that they had some amazing deals! The 2 stars is from the horrible customer service. Our cashier was literally throwing our groceries in our basket. This Aldi store is exactly what I would expect growing up in the Midwest with Aldi being a regular part of my life... Aldi excels at the following: staples at excellent prices. Things like flour, butter, eggs, milk, sugar, canned goods, bulk nuts for baking, jams, peanut/almond butter, cereals, honey, and other dry goods. Their prices and quality cannot be beat. If you are feeding a large family or baking for a crowd this is your best bet for buying. Most of their canned goods, jams/jellies and packaged goods do not contain high fructose corn syrup which I find to be a good thing. They also have a large selection of low carb goods, Gluten free items and other specialty items (at super low prices when compared to Trader Joe's and others!) If you are hesitant to try their items, everything is guaranteed with a money back no questions asked policy. They also have a huge selection of wonderful cheeses, deli meats, imported marinated olives and artichokes, grass fed cheeses from Kerrygold at half price from other stores. Their Aldi brand goat's cheese and other cheese varieties have won numerous awards and are delicious! Being here in wine country this store is a great place to pick up some wonderful cheese to pair with your local finds for that next cocktail or tasting party. Don't forget to check out the Aldi special buys: these are items that are available for a week or two at most. They are usually seasonal, things like garden tools at one recent point (we picked up high quality shovels, rakes and a garden ho at $3.99 each. Same shovels at the big home store were $29.99. I know this because I had actually bought one and ended up returning it after visiting Aldi!) Other recent trips yielded a great metal bathroom 3 tier shelf for $20, a rechargeable work light that my boyfriend uses on just about every project around the house for $15, nice leather sandals for me for $7, a wonderful PFOA free nonstick pan for $8, and a stepstool that holds 300lbs for $10. We also got all our tomato plants, jalapeño plants, banana pepper plants, parsley, and organic potting soil this spring for our patio container garden. They are all growing very well! Our guest room even boasts a queen size 12 inch cool gel memory foam mattress I got at Aldi a few years ago when I lived in Southern California. It was $99 and is better quality and more comfortable than the $1800 tempur-pedic mattress it replaced! Even has a 20 year warranty. For $99! Can't beat that! While Aldi may not have the best variety in fresh meats, seafood or fresh produce, what is there is usually good quality at an affordable price. I like the grass fed ground beef at $5/lb and whenever they have lamb it is usually very good and very affordable too! A visit to Aldi will likely need to be supplemented with another store to make your entire groceries for the week/month but you are sure to save on the things that you do find there! These are just a few reasons I don't miss a week at my local Aldi store, maybe you should too! read more
