I might have to go out on a limb here and make a statement that it's hard for Vons to miss the mark. However, I would have to give them a 4.5 today because while we ordered the crispy soy wings, the amount of sauce on the wings were so minimal, you actually can't taste as much of the soy. Usually your fingers would be extra saucy almost like eating a bag of cheetos - finger licking good, but not today. I will say that the positive points were that we were able to call and order on the way there and by the time we got there, we paid and waited no more than a couple minutes for the wings to come out. Still crispy and enjoyable, just missing a bit of flavor. Fortunately for them, today is the day we intended to use Korean fried chicken in our last dab challenge so we have flavor AND spicy to go with crispy, juicy wings. Good food, it was tasty but it delivered to us COLD. Could have been a hit with the hard working, hungry guys. Unfortunately cold chicken and cold fries, cold mandoo and cold tenders were not what they waited over an hour for, but that's what they got. Definitely not recommending delivery by GrubHub, but didn't seem like an option. The first experience having Vons could have been entirely different. Never doing that again. I had been to this eatery once before, so I already knew that their Korean chicken wings were delicious. I was looking for dinner nearby that would be quick to order and fast to eat, so this checked all the boxes. I had read a previous review that recommended to call in your order, as they make the chicken wings fresh and it'll take approx 15 min. I dialed their number several times, but the phone just rang and there wasn't a voicemail. I found that odd, but decided to go down there anyway since it's nearby. They're located in the Safeway shopping center next to Repetti's Pizza and Tropics. There are several tables located inside, and the place is clean and spacious. When I walked in, I asked the person at the counter if they take phone orders, which he said yes. I told him I tried calling several times, and when he checked his phone, he realized that it wasn't working. The cook in the back laughed and said maybe that's why they weren't very busy. Despite the hiccup, both employees were very friendly. I ordered the Bone-In (4 pieces) Chicken Plate, which comes with 2 scoops of rice, corn, 2 pieces of mini mandoo and your choice of sauce. I selected the Crispy Snow (cheese and onion powder). It took approx 15 min before my order was ready, so the previous reviewer was right! The chicken pieces were larger than I had remembered. They were cripsy and flavorful. I was very happy that I chose the Crispy Snow sauce! The corn was cold, which I thought was odd. I'm used to eating warm corn, not cold. The mandoo was just average. Haven't been here in a bit but still really good! Ordered 12 piece original and 12 piece shoyu, and side of fries. Love the fries it's super crispy skinny but for take out it's just in a dish with foil under the fries a little hard to carry out but kept its crisp since it wasn't covered. Called and ordered ahead so it was ready right in time for pick up they had lots of orders in the window so glad that they're getting business so that they can stay open. My friend told me that there was a Vons Chicken joint was in Hawaii Kai, and I'm so glad that we stopped by here for da wings! Crispy Shoyu Wings that is!!! So I like drum guy, and my friend loves da flats which makes us da perfect chicken eating buddies. Lol! I asked the nice Korean man if I could get 9 drums, & 9 flats? Which he was more than nice enough to fulfill my request. The nice Korean man who took my food order at the ordering counter, was also da cook (and probably the owner of da biz). After taking my order & money, he promptly headed straight into the kitchen & fried up my Crispy Shoyu Wings. The wait time was very minimal, and I must say....... there's nothing like having freshly made deep frrrrrrried wings! Ummmmmmmmmmmmmm! We stopped here for lunch one weekend because we were craving some Korean fried chicken. There are several Vons locations around the island. This one is located in the Safeway/Longs shopping center mauka of Costco. There is plenty of parking and when we went, we were the only customers. The small family pack fed 3 people and we even took some home. It was a pretty good deal for $45. It came with two wings options. We chose the shoyu for one and the seasoned mild for the other. There was also boneless wings because they were out of tenders, gyoza and fries. Everything is deep fried. We also ordered a side of rice and pickled daikon. The wings are my favorite. The shoyu sauce is a little sweet and savory. It's good. I think I like the seasoned mild sauce just a tiny bit more, but they're both good. The fries were thin and crispy. The platter came with a little container of ranch which was nice to dip the fries into. The boneless wings were surprisingly good. They were like mini tenders. I think I can make better pickled daikon.... So I'll skip that next time. The workers were pretty friendly and we were able to eat inside. read more

Vons chicken in Hawaii Kai is so convenient and it was easy to place a phone order and pickup. We ended up getting a half order of seasoned fried chicken. It was the right amount for two. I just wish they'd throw in some radish pickles. We totally forgot to order because at other Korean fried chicken places the pickled radish is standard. Seasoned fried chicken (spicy) is a solid 4/5. It was hot, had light crispy breading, and spicy sauce. The chicken was definitely fried to order and still hot by the time we started to eat. I'm glad we got the spicy because it was spot on. We were sweating slightly and the burn was just right. For the price ($19.88) I thought a half order was a decent deal and my fried chicken craving was satisfied. Service was efficient and friendly. I love that Vons is no frills and getting my chicken was no hassle. Do yourself a favor and call in your order as it can take 15-20 minutes to fry the chicken. I'm sure we'll be back. I hadn't eaten KFC in a long time after having mediocre experiences at OG KFC chains like bb.q and Pelicana. Even though KFC batter is lighter than American fried chicken batter, there was always too much of it. I had low expectations when we decided to try Vons; We got a half order of honey butter wings and spicy rice cakes. The chicken truly HIT after snorkeling for two hours at Hanauma Bay. No notes. It's probably the best KFC I've had in a long time--hot, sweet and savory, and with the perfect batter to chicken ratio. As for the rice cakes, they were pretty skimpy for being so pricy. I think they were 6-7 dollars--there were 8 pieces of rice cake at most. This is now my favorite go to wings place on the East side. This place is a gem with made to order foods that come out hot and delicious. One criteria I am always looking for is crispy wings and these wings hit the spot. The fries also came out shoe string type crispy. The mandoo skin had a crispy chewy texture with meat in the middle which made for a yummy combination. The restaurant is smallish and I felt more for casual dining and take out. There are smaller tables with guests ordering a medley of pupus. The girls taking the orders are nice and try very hard to get your order out quickly however saying that the wait would be about 20 minutes. Will definitely return for the fried fun foods! read more

We recently went to the new Vons chicken in Hawaii Kai. It's located close to Island Brew and next door to Liko's. We were so excited to have Vons closer to us since we would drive all the way to Kaimuki for some fried chicken. We love the one in Kaimuki. It's nice and crisp and the flavors are on point. The only thing about the Kaimuki one we dislike is the horrible parking. It's hard to get in and hard to get out. So when we saw it came to Hawaii Kai with loads of parking, we were all about it. We ordered full order of their crispy fried chicken, half order of their spicy wings, French fries, and mandoo. It's a small place and you can eat inside but we decided to take it to go. We got home in about 5-10 minutes and was ready to chow down. We were a little disappointed because the wings were kind of soggy. We like to have our wings nice and crispy and crunchy when you bite into them. The French fries too seemed a little soft too. And I'm not sure what happened with the mandoo. There was so weird sauce thing smothered on top. They don't do that at the other location we go to so we were confused. We prefer it without the sauce. Overall it was nice to try Vons in Hawaii Kai but I really hope they work on making their chicken a little crispier. We'll try again someday, maybe they're just working out their kinks. read more

A Vons here in Hawaii Kai! My cousin who is visiting from the Bay area told me she wanted to eat Vons chicken and that there was one in the area. I didn't believe her. She looked it up on Yelp. She was right. :/ BUT happy to be wrong in this case. I always come here to this shopping center for grocery shopping and Long's- how the heck did I miss this place?? So we headed over 40 minutes before closing ( they close at 8pm). It's at the far end of the Hawaii Kai shopping center near the water, next to Liko's. Fairly new-opened this past June. Nice new clean feeling place with a super nice person in front. We called in our order so we got it nice and hot. We got the 1/2 order crispy fried chicken ($15.99) and the fried shoyu chicken ($16.99) with 10 pieces each. Came out nice and hot. Loved the super crunchy outside and the moist inside of wings and drumettes. I suggest if you're not going to eat them right away, get the sauce on the side so it won't get soft. We also got the fried mandoo (10 pieces for $5.99) which were little bite sized ones, not the usual bigger sized. I think the smaller size made them not as tender as the bigger kind. KFC Who? This place is the bomb diggity. So happy they now have a Hawaii Kai location so that we don't have to drive to the busy busy South side! The inside is clean and bright, instantly a welcoming environment. The staff are very friendly and greet you right away. The manager himself is very personal too, and made us feel like an old friend walking through the door! The chicken here is made with the utmost care. Don't mind that Vons is technically a franchise - they treat their craft like a mom and pop. The chicken was crispy despite having sauce on it, and everything was *Chefs Kiss*. Right now, it may be a little hard to see since they seem to be doing some construction around the area, but walk past the annoying wall & there it is! Inside is spacious and clean! Did not make me feel bad for having to call my family member to figure out what to order. & I know I take forever some times with how indecisive I can be.... They do allow you to phone order ahead of time if needed. But unfortunately for myself i just got off work and rushed here to make sure I got in before closing.
