My friend told me that there was a Vons Chicken joint was in Hawaii Kai, and I'm so glad that we stopped by here for da wings! Crispy Shoyu Wings that is!!! So I like drum guy, and my friend loves da flats which makes us da perfect chicken eating buddies. Lol! Upon walking into the little restaurant, the menu was posted on the wall but I pretty much knew what I came here for...... and proceeded to order a 18 piece Crispy Shoyu Wings. I asked the nice Korean man if I could get 9 drums, & 9 flats? Which he was more than nice enough to fulfill my request. The nice Korean man who took my food order at the ordering counter, was also da cook (and probably the owner of da biz). After taking my order & money, he promptly headed straight into the kitchen & fried up my Crispy Shoyu Wings. The wait time was very minimal, and I must say....... there's nothing like having freshly made deep frrrrrrried wings! Ummmmmmmmmmmmmm! Although there were several table & chairs within the restaurant where you could dine inside, I elected to do "take-out". The restaurant was very clean, and they even had a large screen t.v. where you watch & past the time away while you're waiting for your wings. Like any Vons Chicken joint, the food/wings are pretty consistent, so I pretty much knew what to expect, and of course my Crispy Shoyu Wings dis not disappoint, as it was deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelicious! Should I be Jonesing for Wings in the Hawaii Kai area, garans I would come back here again!

In my quest to explore the various cuisine scenes throughout O'ahu's Windward side (east shore of the island) after a recent acquisition of an investment/private-use property, I finally made my way to Vons Chicken's Hawaii Kai location. I loved Korean fried chicken and was excited when I came across this business a couple of years ago. After further research, they apparently had locations in California (Torrance location was the closest to me), Washington state, and several countries. I dared to say that Korean fried chicken (KFC!) tasted better than all other types! Would I fly the coop for these chicken wings!? PURCHASE 10pc Half-Order Crispy Honey Butter Wings ($18.99): This was such a unique Korean flavor and I loved it! All was chillaxing - mahalo! PARKING (FREE) Located in the outdoor Hawaii Kai Shopping Center, there were plenty of spots, and I was able to park relatively close to the business - 'nuff said! ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE A simple open layout with a handful of chairs/tables, a main order counter, and various promotional posters hung on the walls. The food was great, the prices were reasonable (albeit under $2.00/wing), and the service was easy and straightforward. I felt this place was geared mainly for takeout. I found total value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $42.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). And, they accepted my credit card of choice... Vons chicken in Hawaii Kai is so convenient and it was easy to place a phone order and pickup. We ended up getting a half order of seasoned fried chicken. It was the right amount for two. I just wish they'd throw in some radish pickles. We totally forgot to order because at other Korean fried chicken places the pickled radish is standard. Seasoned fried chicken (spicy) is a solid 4/5. It was hot, had light crispy breading, and spicy sauce. The chicken was definitely fried to order and still hot by the time we started to eat. I'm glad we got the spicy because it was spot on. We were sweating slightly and the burn was just right. For the price ($19.88) I thought a half order was a decent deal and my fried chicken craving was satisfied. Service was efficient and friendly. I love that Vons is no frills and getting my chicken was no hassle. Do yourself a favor and call in your order as it can take 15-20 minutes to fry the chicken. I'm sure we'll be back. While there is ample parking the spaces close to Vons was sparse. No biggie, and at least it's free. I hadn't eaten KFC in a long time after having mediocre experiences at OG KFC chains like bb.q and Pelicana. Even though KFC batter is lighter than American fried chicken batter, there was always too much of it. I had low expectations when we decided to try Vons; We got a half order of honey butter wings and spicy rice cakes. The chicken truly HIT after snorkeling for two hours at Hanauma Bay. No notes. It's probably the best KFC I've had in a long time--hot, sweet and savory, and with the perfect batter to chicken ratio. As for the rice cakes, they were pretty skimpy for being so pricy. I think they were 6-7 dollars--there were 8 pieces of rice cake at most. Service here was a little slower despite the fact we came during an off hour (I think it was around 2 PM) and were one of two parties seated in the restaurant, but the wait was definitely worth it.
This is now my favorite go to wings place on the East side. This place is a gem with made to order foods that come out hot and delicious. One criteria I am always looking for is crispy wings and these wings hit the spot. The fries also came out shoe string type crispy. The mandoo skin had a crispy chewy texture with meat in the middle which made for a yummy combination. The restaurant is smallish and I felt more for casual dining and take out. There are smaller tables with guests ordering a medley of pupus. The girls taking the orders are nice and try very hard to get your order out quickly however saying that the wait would be about 20 minutes. Will definitely return for the fried fun foods!
2 or 3 tables to sit. TV on wall. You cam purchase bottle drinks. Call to pre-order or allow 15-20mins for your order. Kinda disappointed as it didn't taste as good as the last owner/mgmt. I won't be back. Friendly staff.
Glad to have found this place in Hawaii Kai town center when we just wanted to eat something very casual. We tried the chicken plain and chicken garlic. Kids enjoyed the plain ones. The garlic flavor was just right, not overpowering. The cashier was friendly. We spilled our drink and he kindly cleaned up.
We recently went to the new Vons chicken in Hawaii Kai. It's located close to Island Brew and next door to Liko's. We were so excited to have Vons closer to us since we would drive all the way to Kaimuki for some fried chicken. We love the one in Kaimuki. It's nice and crisp and the flavors are on point. The only thing about the Kaimuki one we dislike is the horrible parking. It's hard to get in and hard to get out. So when we saw it came to Hawaii Kai with loads of parking, we were all about it. We ordered full order of their crispy fried chicken, half order of their spicy wings, French fries, and mandoo. It's a small place and you can eat inside but we decided to take it to go. We got home in about 5-10 minutes and was ready to chow down. We were a little disappointed because the wings were kind of soggy. We like to have our wings nice and crispy and crunchy when you bite into them. The French fries too seemed a little soft too. And I'm not sure what happened with the mandoo. There was so weird sauce thing smothered on top. They don't do that at the other location we go to so we were confused. We prefer it without the sauce. Overall it was nice to try Vons in Hawaii Kai but I really hope they work on making their chicken a little crispier. We'll try again someday, maybe they're just working out their kinks.
As part of a Father's Day potluck, I decided to order wings from here. We got the half order of regular and the half order of shoyu wings.. I also got an order of the honey butter fries for the kids :) I called in my order and they had it ready on time, and the service was friendly. The chicken was crispy and delicious, and the shoyu was crunchy with a hint of sweetness like Joe the other locations make it :) I definitely want to try the crispy garlic and crispy snow wings next time. The honey butter fries were good, but they were short string style and I just wish it was not as crispy (I like my fries still a bit floppy lol) - just my personal preference :) I'll definitely be back
I had been to this eatery once before, so I already knew that their Korean chicken wings were delicious. I was looking for dinner nearby that would be quick to order and fast to eat, so this checked all the boxes. I had read a previous review that recommended to call in your order, as they make the chicken wings fresh and it'll take approx 15 min. I dialed their number several times, but the phone just rang and there wasn't a voicemail. I found that odd, but decided to go down there anyway since it's nearby. They're located in the Safeway shopping center next to Repetti's Pizza and Tropics. There are several tables located inside, and the place is clean and spacious. When I walked in, I asked the person at the counter if they take phone orders, which he said yes. I told him I tried calling several times, and when he checked his phone, he realized that it wasn't working. The cook in the back laughed and said maybe that's why they weren't very busy. Despite the hiccup, both employees were very friendly. I ordered the Bone-In (4 pieces) Chicken Plate, which comes with 2 scoops of rice, corn, 2 pieces of mini mandoo and your choice of sauce. I selected the Crispy Snow (cheese and onion powder). It took approx 15 min before my order was ready, so the previous reviewer was right! The chicken pieces were larger than I had remembered. They were cripsy and flavorful. I was very happy that I chose the Crispy Snow sauce! The corn was cold, which I thought was odd. I'm used to eating warm corn, not cold. The mandoo was just average. I realize they are known for their chicken, so next time I'll probably just order the chicken and not the full plate. I will definitely return again to try some of their other sauces! read more
I might have to go out on a limb here and make a statement that it's hard for Vons to miss the mark. However, I would have to give them a 4.5 today because while we ordered the crispy soy wings, the amount of sauce on the wings were so minimal, you actually can't taste as much of the soy. Usually your fingers would be extra saucy almost like eating a bag of cheetos - finger licking good, but not today. I will say that the positive points were that we were able to call and order on the way there and by the time we got there, we paid and waited no more than a couple minutes for the wings to come out. Still crispy and enjoyable, just missing a bit of flavor. Fortunately for them, today is the day we intended to use Korean fried chicken in our last dab challenge so we have flavor AND spicy to go with crispy, juicy wings. The space looked pretty clean and almost freshly renovated, though, that's probably not the case. Indoor seating is available and the new menu is posted below. We'll be back again. Haven't been here in a bit but still really good! Ordered 12 piece original and 12 piece shoyu, and side of fries. Love the fries it's super crispy skinny but for take out it's just in a dish with foil under the fries a little hard to carry out but kept its crisp since it wasn't covered. Called and ordered ahead so it was ready right in time for pick up they had lots of orders in the window so glad that they're getting business so that they can stay open. Both original and shoyu were crispy outside moist inside. Thanks for being out in Hawaii Kai! Hope they stay open! read more

Delicious fried chicken wings you would expect from a Von's chicken outlet. It is kinda hidden by Longs and Safeway in Hawaii Kai. One lady operation the day we stopped by but she had it down from counter, phone orders and frying the chicken! read more

Coming back for more chicken on my return visit to Hawaii! The food is just as good as I remembered it. I don't really care for saucy chicken, so my go to is the crispy fried chicken. So so crispy. The service is quick and the staff is friendly. Finding seating wasn't difficult. The store is also very clean and air conditioned so it's a great place to grab lunch and cool down. Ample parking since it's the Safeway parking lot read more

Yay, they're back open. Called in my order and it was ready in 10 minutes. My spicy chicken plate was yummy and Jay (new owner) was pleasant. No one was there (on a Friday!) because the business was closed for a month while the new owners were prepping to take over, people stopped relying on them. I'll be going again. read more
A Vons here in Hawaii Kai! My cousin who is visiting from the Bay area told me she wanted to eat Vons chicken and that there was one in the area. I didn't believe her. She looked it up on Yelp. She was right. :/ BUT happy to be wrong in this case. I always come here to this shopping center for grocery shopping and Long's- how the heck did I miss this place?? So we headed over 40 minutes before closing ( they close at 8pm). It's at the far end of the Hawaii Kai shopping center near the water, next to Liko's. Fairly new-opened this past June. Nice new clean feeling place with a super nice person in front. We called in our order so we got it nice and hot. We got the 1/2 order crispy fried chicken ($15.99) and the fried shoyu chicken ($16.99) with 10 pieces each. Came out nice and hot. Loved the super crunchy outside and the moist inside of wings and drumettes. I suggest if you're not going to eat them right away, get the sauce on the side so it won't get soft. We also got the fried mandoo (10 pieces for $5.99) which were little bite sized ones, not the usual bigger sized. I think the smaller size made them not as tender as the bigger kind. But they weren't bad. There were other seasonings to try as well as gizzards, shrimp, calamari, French fries and rice cake and I'll certainly be back to try them. read more

These wings are nearly perfect (if only the seasoning was on each wing instead of just the top layer). I've only ever ordered takeout & it's always constantly hot, fresh, & delicious! My favorite is the honey butter & crispy original. Dining in would be more like a fast food vibe- think bright lighting, a few tables, & K-pop video playing loudly on the tv. read more

Looking at the outside (and even the inside) of this unassuming little place is not going to be what pulls you in, so I felt like a review was in order as their food is TOTALLY what should bring you in. You guys, these are some of the best wings I have ever had in my LIFE. So juicy and yet so crispy, light, and super flavorful. We got the Crispy Shoyu and the Crispy Honey Butter wondering - would they really stay crispy with those toppings? The answer is a resounding YES! With a side order of OMG YES. Highly recommend. We will definitely be back to try their other flavors! read more

You don't know KFC until you try VON'S Chicken! Literally, been hearing all the rave about authentic korean chicken all over town, & THANK the universe they finally opened up a new location in hawaii kai!! So close to my home, & locals can rejoice! Located right in Hawaii Kai Towne Shopping Center in the old Pizza Hut location. Right now, it may be a little hard to see since they seem to be doing some construction around the area, but walk past the annoying wall & there it is! Inside is spacious and clean! Love the bright atmosphere. Staff is friendly! Manager is great! Very knowledgeable on the menu! From the moment I walked in the door I was greeted with a friendly hello! Did not make me feel bad for having to call my family member to figure out what to order. & I know I take forever some times with how indecisive I can be.... They do allow you to phone order ahead of time if needed. But unfortunately for myself i just got off work and rushed here to make sure I got in before closing. Honestly, I highly recommend trying every flavor they have at least once. They offer 1/2 (10pcs) or Full (20pcs) For the quality & prices I think it's a great deal. Tonight I settled on Spicy , Garlic , Shoyu & Honey Butter. Let me just say my favorites we're definitely the Shoyu & Honey Butter! 10/10 would recommend. I heard the Snow is super popular but so I will have to come back for that one. The Garlic is great too, mom says it tastes similar to shoyu just extra garlicky if you love garlic this is your go to! Sadly i'm not a big spicy fan with chicken but my dad literally demolished it so 10/10!! ALL of our chicken was cooked to perfection, it's perfectly crispy with so much flavor and the inside is nice & juicy. Literal FOODGASM!!! My only regret is not ordering more!! Lucky for me I live a few min away so I can always come back. Definitely sharing with all my friends to check their new location out. Great addition to Hawaii Kai. Tried the plain wings, mild spicy wings (not spicy) and plain fries. All great. I wish they did a sampler plate so we could try many flavors without having to buy 10! Definitely will return to try other flavors. read more
