This is a casual Vietnamese place in a strip mall near Walmart and famous footwear. We came here because our favorite pho place was closed, and were fairly dissappointed given the great reviews it has. For the appetizer, we decided to try something new and went with this ground beef dish wrapped in a betel nut. The beef was a little bland and I thought it could have gone with a dipping sauce. We got a large pho sac biet and a bun Bo hue. The pho broth was way too strong on the anise and cardamom taste. The portion of noodles was large but the amount of meat was not. The bun Bo hue broth was a little better, but a bit light on the flavor. Both must've contained a lot of MSG because we were extremely thirsty after this meal. When the check came, most dishes were a few dollars more than the price that was listed on the menu. This was in addition to the extra "0.89" that they add to each dish that was written on a small sticker. If you're going to charge more, that's fine, but just be honest about it on the menu and update the prices.

Had a wonderful experience at VN Pho!! I love how many menu item options there were. Most places only have a select few to choose from. I ordered the pork spring roll with rice paper wrapper and it was sooo amazing!! There was a little crunchy egg roll shell inside that added a nice crispy and flavors were so good. I also got the combo pho and it was so flavorful I didn't have to add anything to it. The small was more than enough! I definitely would come back! The server was very friendly and it was nice cozy little spot with adequate seating.

A hidden gem of Hartford with some of the best pho around today. That's VN pho in a nutshell. Every time our friends come back to Hartford to visit, we insist on taking them here for the best beef based pho. Where they moved to, the pho and Vietnamese food isn't as good and they usually return to their homes thinking about VN Pho. The go to is the P2 pho tai with extra brisket. To say that the brisket makes it is an understatement. My dad was raving on about how he always adds brisket and I was shocked to hear that since he doesn't always add anything extra. My friends also agree with the softness and perfectly cooked brisket going into their pho. My friends who are oxtail fans also order their pho with this delicacy and are satisfied with the results. When available we also get the summer rolls with nam or spring rolls to kick off the meal. Hot Vietnamese coffee or a refreshing ice tea all go with the food here. I'm getting hungry even writing this review. Here's to me probably going there in the next week to satisfy my pho cravings!

I love pho, but especially in the Summer, I love Vietnamese style vermicelli bowls equally. It's one of my favorite Summer dishes because it's satisfying, but tastes light, herbaceous and refreshing. It's also a phenomenal delivery service meal because, besides the egg rolls and pork, it's designed to be eaten cold and it holds up well during travel. Not long ago, a Yelp review for VN Pho appeared on the Nearby Activity section of Yelp. It was a good review and I noted that VN had a good overall Yelp rating. Today, I saw VN on DoorDash and decided to order my usual style of vermicelli bowl - with pork and a fried egg roll. My wife ordered the natural rice paper spring rolls with shrimp and pork and peanut dipping sauce. For the most part, I liked VN's vermicelli bowl. The pork was tasty. The sweet and sour fish sauce -- designed to be mixed in with the noodles, cucumber, carrots, green onions, shredded greens ( Napa cabbage maybe?), peanuts and mint to tie everything together -- was tasty. Most of the vegetables were fresh tasting and had good texture. However, the fresh mint was either past prime or packaged too close to the hot food. Either way, it was limp and lifeless. That's a shame because hardy fresh mint is one of my favorite parts of a vermicelli bowl. I also could have used more vegetable color - shredded purple cabbage, etc. My fried egg roll was pretty good. It had great outer texture. The filling was pretty good, but I would have preferred more varied ingredients. I primarily tasted pork. I'm not factoring it into my score, but my wife had a luke warm reaction to her Spring rolls. She didn't like the pork flavor, thought the shrimp didn't taste as fresh as she expects and the peanut dipping sauce had too much of a soy sauce-type flavor. 3.5 Stars (4 with a .5 downgrade for the mint) but I'll round up to 4 Stars.

I wish I knew the ingredients that make this so unique.

I am updating my review to say I am still coming weekly since my original review. Don't miss out on this amazing Pho. They serve great spring rolls too. Very fresh and wrapped properly. They don't break apart while you're eating them.

My first time in Connecticut and we stopped here for Vietnamese. A little skeptical at first since I'm Vietnamese and usually only prefers moms cooking lol but this place did not let down. We were greeted by a male I think he must of been the son and then the mom took our order. Super nice people and nice restaurant. Wasn't dirty when we came in. We got 2 spring rolls (yummy, bigger sized) chicken wings( they come with sauce on them, warning! Lol) and two beef pho's ( beefy broth and yummy meat). I would recommend to people who are interested in trying Vietnamese food!

Pho is such a beautiful thing. There are so many places to get it too but VN Pho is a great excuse to grab pho after your trip tonthe Walmart on Flatbush Ave. When yoh walk in you will notice the plexiglass divders, nice touch for times like this. You will then scan the QR code to view your menu, order your food and then wait. Just wait for this amazing bowl of broth with raw meat that gets cooked after you apply 1lb of force with your chopstick to the meat pushing it down to the deepest part of the bowl so that it cooks itself so you don't have to. That's my favorite part of pho. Only real pho people will understand. But yeah, I approve of VN Pho. But first I had some summer rolls that had shrimp and pork. Very simple, very good, expected. The pork was slightly chewy in a good way and everything else was great, not sure how else to explain it other than that. This pho had slightly less cilantro, not a bad thing but I noticed. The vietnamese meatballs were also the best I have had, usually I avoid them but these ones were good. I did notice that VM Pho gives a lot more meat than usual. I never usually run out of noodles before meat but this time I did without even trying. I was surprised, I love meat. To top it off, usually at pho restaurants you go up to the register to pay. But here they bring the register down to you. Literally. They have this fancy thing that they just run over to your table and you can tap, insert or swipe to pay. We have all seen this before but then it started printing my receipt and I was like wow. It's funny I'm so used to going up and paying at most pho restaurants but this time they litterally brought a handheld register to my table. Beautiful.

Saw this spot when the sign said "coming soon" and needed to give it a try. When this place opened, I ordered what I always order at other pho places in CT. 3 things I wanna share: 1. Employees were very friendly, which is a BIG PLUS for me 2. The place was very clean and I can tell they want the best for their customers because they check on you often asking how everything is and if there is anything you need. No other pho places have done that and I always had to get their attention to request what I needed 3. The broth was very nice and had a clean aftertaste, which I have not experienced for a long long time. I trust them using the best quality ingredients to make their foods Overall, as a pho addict and trying other pho places in CT, this was one of the best spots, which I highly recommend!

My expectations aren't super high, but I think the "ska club," "night at the Roxbury" music playing…read more that didn't fit the vibe might have something to do w/ it. There were 6 other people at the bar, a couple in the corner & a table if 6 behind me. The manager came out to talk to the couple in the corner about their experience, which is not a great sign, but we'll see. He saw that I was writing a review & never went back in the kitchen after that, unless it was for a brief moment. He involved himself in pouring drinks & barely left my side. He made small talk & I learned that he had been open for 4 years. It was difficult for me to eat, take pictures of the food or write the review with his constant engaging presence. He was pleasant & made sure to pick up the bartenders slack. For instance, a coaster under the drinks, offering me a glass, or putting down a placemats under the food or supplying silverware, none of which she did. I ordered a Modelo, but when she grabbed it out of the cooler, i saw that it was Especial not Negra, so i asked do you have the dark? She said no & w/ out hesitation opened it, not giving me a chance to ask for something different. Not a big deal, but she seemed indifferent & with no affect. None of this is a deal breaker, just an observation. The food, that was a deal breaker. I ordered the (smoked BBQ sandwich) & opted for the brisket. It came with a side & I chose onion rings. They were pre-salted, almost too much, but they were good. No complaints there. The sandwich however was impossible to eat. The meat was very tough & stringy. It was impossible to tear, bite or cut. The roll was soft, untoasted & soggy, causing it to fall apart making a mess. I gave up, turning to fork & knife to cut what resembled a tangled bunch of hair in both in taste & texture. There was something on the meat, but it was more of a marinade than BBQ as we know it. The same goes for the cheese. I did not see any caramelized onions, but there were two jalapeños. The owner asked how the meal was & I said eh. He said only ok? so I elaborated. He said he would relay the information to the kitchen & I thanked him. After that he never came back into the dining area until after I had left. I do feel bad writing this review because he was so overly involved in my experience & he was a nice gentleman that I would like to succeed, but I do not think I would want to return there after my experience with that sandwich, especially for the price. The meal alone was bad enough. Maybe a change in staff would help, unless they were related. I felt bad writing this review because the owner made it a point to be overly engaging with me once he saw that i was writing a review, but the better way to handle things is to make sure that you guest's experience is top notch. I felt like he tried to keep me engaged, so i wouldnt be rough on him, but it is supposed to be about the customers experience, not my empathy for the friendly owner. I wish him the best of luck.

Shout out to Smoke's owner Rich who dreamed up the Dumpling/Prosecco Experience for a dozen regulars and social media followers. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by Rich and a small split of Maschio Prosecco. After all the participants arrived, Rich's wife Claire and Claire's mom (the star of the show) walked us through the process of making homemade dumplings. Claire and her mom made the simple dough using just two ingredients -water and all-purpose flour. We watched our instructors mix the dough, stretch and roll into a thin rope, snap it off into small chunks, squish it into a disk, use a mini-rolling pin to flatten it out into a small circle, fill it from a pre-made bowl of Ground Beef and Cabbage, then fold and pinch it into shape. Then our dozen attendees tried their hand at replicating all of those steps. Our mother and daughter team's dumplings looked as though they came off a 3D printer- just perfect and uniform. Mine looked like rejected factory seconds. The mother didn't speak English, but I had a blast watching and copying her little tricks on folding in the corners and squeezing the wrappers together. Once the dumplings were folded and squeezed together, they went into a pot of water, and we all enjoyed them before dinner. Dinner was a real pleasure. I loved the vibe at Smoke. If you want to cool it hip and chic I won't argue. I loved all the paintings on the wall. There is a large painting of a ghostly looking, red-lipped female blowing out a puff of smoke. I told Rich what a cool painting it was, and he modestly said he had painted it. So not only is Rich a fun and engaging personality, and a talented painter, but the food at his restaurant is great. Our friend ordered a $15 Spicy Smoked Philly Cheesesteak with American Cheese, Peppers, Onions on a Grinder Roll with fries. I sampled a small slice, and it was terrific, and yeah -it was spicy. My wife ordered a $11 Shrimp and Roasted Corn Bisque served with pita chips, She loved it. I ordered a $10 Smoked Beef Brisket Chili served with tortilla chips. It was a big portion, full of flavorful chunks of beef, and packed just enough heat to make it perfect to my taste. Smoke offers a Sunday Brunch from 11-3 and a Happy Hour Mon-Sat 4pm-7pm. Their pricing is excellent, the vibe is super fun, the food is delicious, and the service from Rich and his staff is excellent. What a fun evening!
