Conference center hallway

Vista Point is nice. I've been several times over my career with the Navy for retirement ceremonies, change of command, Christmas parties, speeches and other training events. They host weddings and other receptions here as well. There is plenty of parking in the attached lot and it overlooks the HRBT on the conference center side so the windows have a pretty view. Food is decent but not at all spectacular. It's easy and efficient and convenient if you are already on base and has nice clean open spaces.

It has been nearly three weeks; I can stop thinking about No Frill Bar and Grill…read more I'm a military spouse, so I know my time in Hampton Roads is coming to an end soon. I visited a Hampton Roads Restaurant group on FB and asked if someone was visiting from out of town: What is your go-to place to take them? Out of 90+ comments, No Frill Bar and Grill was mentioned the most - six times! So when I finally had a day off and some other business to tend to in Norfolk, it was the perfect excuse to finally try them. No Frill Bar and Grill has been open for nearly 30 years by Jerry Meltsner. Jerry's nephew Jon Kliner helps co-own and manage operations. It originally opened on Tidewater Drive, but the space didn't allow for much growth - 10 years later, he moved to a location off Colley Avenue and Spotswood Avenue. Growth continued, moving from counter service to table service. The second location, at 1620 Laskin Road in Virginia Beach, opened in 2005. The restaurant's longevity stems from quality, consistency, price, service, and staff who genuinely care about the business and serving the community. I asked the server for her opinion on two options - Salmon, Shrimp and grits won. The dish was incredible: lightly blackened salmon, for once blackened food that doesn't just taste like salt. I don't dine with the swine, so I asked for no andouille sausage. The sautéed shrimp, caramelized onions, tomatoes, and spinach simmered in Norfolk Canyon ale sauce over cheesy grits and Boursin lavash cracker. The cheesy grits were smooth, and the Boursin lavash cracker was a nice touch. The Boursin added extra creaminess to the meal. The cracker wasn't really a cracker - more like little toasted bread. After this first meal, I know two things for sure: 1. I definitely understand why it is such a local favorite, and 2. I will be back.

My husband and I enjoy No Frill when you're in the mood for just that -- no frill, laid back, good…read morecomfort food. the portions are huge and it's always consistent. The service is always great and the hosts/servers are always friendly. Our go to is the meatloaf. when you're looking for a good ol' comfort food - that's the best. They also have amazing desserts that are worth a try. We found this restaurant good for families (including our toddler)! Food was toddler approved!

I was curious about barbecue in Norfolk so we got some takeout from The Fishin' Pig…read more I decided to get the fried green tomatoes and the beef brisket platter with extra brisket (because two people were sharing), collard greens, and green beans. I had a few allergy-related questions and was able to get answers quickly because the cashier checked with the kitchen. Unfortunately my questions were focused on dairy so we were surprised by the bacon on the beans and other meat (probably pork) under the collard greens. My husband doesn't eat pork so he ended up only eating the beef. The cashier said the order would only take about ten minutes so I enjoyed a quick drink at the bar while waiting. If we get a chance to return I'll probably get the fried green tomatoes and just beef brisket (no sides).

The best thing we had and the only thing we'd probably order again was the green beans. They were…read moreflavored so well - a nice bit of smokiness, good about of pepper, and perfectly salted. A couple specific food problems were: 1) Friend green tomatoes. Given the presentation, we asked our server if they were fried pickles. Nope! Okay, that's fine. At first. Thought they were just super hot and need a minute to cool down. But they were drenched in oil from the fryer. At first I tried dabbing them in the basket. Then, realizing that was doing no good and the breading was just going to be soggy, I took them out and blotted them on the brown paper table cover. We only at a few. Not good. 2) The meat - pulled pork, brisket, and Alaskan haddock - were all lacking flavor.

Finding 10-Top was fortunate and completely random. On one of my explorations, I noticed it tucked…read moreinto a mini-strip mall next to a laundry mat. The unusual sign, a red and black circle (the colors of anarchism!) and bold lettering drew my attention. The window display of vintage/odd toys kept it and the door collaged with band flyers sealed the deal. It was closed at the time, but I knew I'd be back. A few days latter, I was. The inside was better than expected a "WE HAVE WINE" sign displayed prominently near the drink cooler, swag section. Quotes of the famous adorn the walls, in chalk so they can be changed based on whim (I hope). Gandhi, Toni Morrison, F. Scott-Fitzgerald to name a few. Everything on the walls likely has a story, known only to the initiate. I am but a humble pilgrim, seeking knowledge that is withheld, but the meatloaf sandwich did not disappoint. 10-Top has been a Norfolk/Ghent institution since 2001, the current owners have been in charge since 2011. Everyone I have met here smiles a lot. They are enthusiastic about the food they serve. Do you want to have a bowl of soup for your side? No problem! Everything is made in house, except the bread but its great. Nothing is the same-same here. Everything you think you know, has been reinvented, reinterpreted, and reimagined in the best ways possible. You will not be disappointed.

Had to…read morelaugh cause one of the waitresses was new and asked for a drink menu bartender said they threw them away.... HUH??? What chu mean so we don't do signature drinks we just do rando's I'm done. OK, so I normally don't edit my post after I post them but this one I definitely had to edit my post so I eat like a bird anybody that knows who knows that so my daughter always gets the same thing from Chili's the old timer so I noticed that the three for me had the appetizer which suits my my bird like pigs the Alzheimer would fit her and her drink so as I'm talking to the young lady at the Togo counter, I said for the starter I would like a baked potato old timer just cheese no side salad the lettuce none of that fries she places to order drink boom Pepsi no ice I said hey can I add the white cheddar mac & cheese? Wanna try it place the order pay for it as I'm waiting like I always do I go to the bar I get a drink cause that's what I do. Young lady brings the bag out. I finish my drink. I tipped the bartender pay for my drink. Take the bag go to the car. We drive home. My daughter brings me my mac & cheese and I'm like where's my baked potato she said all you got was cheese and according to the receipt, all you got was the mac & cheese no, I specifically know my verbiage hey can I add when you say can you add what does that mean? That means an add-on that doesn't mean instead of or replace of those are words to replace or instead of I'mma eat chilies to get somebody that pays attention to their customers now I'm pissed because I really wanted to baked potato. The mac & cheese was just a test run which was way too salty so now I know my blood pressure is gonna be through the roof because that was sodium loaded not happy even though the banter at the bar was entertaining now I got back my stars down. I'm pissed.

We visited during the lunch rush. I'd say during our stay the location stayed about 70% or more full. Sorry, no pictures, but the wifey and I both had one of the 3 for deals. Drink, burger and fries for $10.99. The burger was done well and tasted good. Same with the fries. Now I will say the fries serving size was a bit small but again it was a $10.99 meal. Total bill was just under $25. As for the service. Our server (I think her name was JJ) was really good and I saw her bust her tail for our entire stay. I'm not sure how many tables she was working. But she checked on us several times and made sure we had refills on our sweet teas. Again she did a great job. As for the location: It's a bit older but it seemed to be clean. So again. We had a nice experience. I hope you also have a decent meal.
