I was thrilled to find this office so close to where I work downtown. I looked at who was a preferred provider with my vison insurance and I was able to schedule an appointment online. The assistant was great at taking my eye measurements, then scanning my retna. Dr. J. Strickland is my new optometrist. She went through the vision tests and explained the retna pictures and my eye health. I look forward to seeing her next time I am due for an exam. When it came time for the cost breakdown, the assistant went over what my insurance covered, my co-pays and coinsurance. They didn't have my contacts in stock, so they will be arriving in 5-7 business days. I was lucky to score a parking spot on the street out front, but I am not sure if they have a parking lot available. read more

I noticed that this business had not had any recent reviews, so I thought it may be helpful to add mine. First off, I decided to go to Vision Source Eyecare because it was one of the few places in-network with my insurance (Ambetter by Home State Health). It was also one of the few places that was open later, so I could go after work (appointment time 4:50 PM). Some of the previous reviews talk about hidden fees, but either I was lucky, or things have changed. I did ask them about what the cost breakdown would be with my insurance over the phone, prior to even scheduling my appointment. For me and my specific insurance plan, I paid $44 out-of-pocket for my glasses exam and contact lens exam (with fitting). This included the images they took of my retina/optic nerve. Pros: Dr. John Burton seemed very knowledgeable and meticulous with my eye exam. Honestly, I felt like he was the best optometrist I've ever had (all my previous optometrists have been with LensCrafters). The staff were all very nice and accommodating as well. I couldn't decide if I wanted to stick with my biweekly contacts or go with the dailies, but I didn't feel pressured to make a quick decision or purchase through them. However, I will say that for a box of Acuvue Oasis for Astigmatism biweekly contacts, Vision Source Eyecare offers a better price ($50/box) than 1-800-Contacts. Cons: This is a busy clinic, and I think that some may feel uncomfortable with the pace. But I found it efficient and didn't feel rushed. I felt I had the correct prescription at the end of my visit. Parking can be a bit of a headache, but I was able to find a spot pretty easily in the parking lot right next to Tannin Bar & Kitchen. I have ordered contacts through Vision Source Eyecare, and I will be using them again for my eye care needs in the future! read more

I'm one of those people where getting regular check-ups can seems like a chore so I was really happy there was an eye care establishment in downtown KC so close to home. Dr. Bales is so kind and amenable. She even took time to answer questions that I had about my family's eyesight (definitely didn't have to do that). A the staff are really helpful and sweet. Since I am relatively new to the world of glasses and contacts, I can sometimes be a little bit anxious when it comes to my eyes. I am that patient that has a million and one questions. I was recommended to vision source by my insurance and chose this location due to how close to work it was and it had convenient parking. They have always gotten me in and out in record time and are always happy to answer any of my questions even when I call later with more questions. They are always extremely patient with me and Happy to help. I recently decided to move from glasses to contact lenses and after getting fitted for my lenses and getting a great lenses on how to put them on and take them out, I called about ordering some boxes but new my insurance wouldn't cover everything. Vision Source actually took the time to email me a full price list of contacts in relation to my insurance and how I can order them to get the most out of my coverage for the rest of the year (a combo of dailies and monthlies). And when the inevitable happened as new contacts wearer and one of my lenses fell out a few days after getting my prescription, they happily gave me a fresh one so I wouldn't have to go about my day half blind and waste a pair of lenses. I decided to visit Vision Source Eyecare for my yearly vision check-up and contact lens prescription. I chose this location because it was close to my place of work and they allow for lunch-time appointments on certain days of the week. I made my lunch-time appointment for several weeks in the future and got friendly reminders and a courtesy call as the appointment day drew closer. The appointment was fast and easy. I checked into the location, filled out some paperwork, and was promptly seen by the optometrist with little to no wait. The exam lasted for about 30-45 minutes. During the exam, I had expressed dissatisfaction with my old brand of contacts due to dryness at the end of the day and asked about her thoughts on Lasik. She offered to recommend a few surgeons to me, which I turned down. The optometrist also suggested a different brand of contacts, Bausch + Lomb, to try and provided me a sample pair. She informed me that if I didn't like this brand or was unsatisfied, don't open the boxes I order and I could bring the contacts back. I was given my prescription and an option to purchase my contacts. She also informed me of a rebate on these contacts. I decided to purchase the contacts with that offer and the assurances she provided me. After trying out the contacts, I immediately experienced the same dryness of the contacts at the end of the day. I was discouraged and explored other options, namely Lasik, and decided to move away from contact lenses. I left the lenses I ordered unopened, did not submit the rebate, and kept the receipt so I could take them back. I contacted Vision Source Eyecare to return my contacts and was shocked to find out that they did not actually take refunds on contacts even though it was within 30 days of my exam and ~14 days from when I received my contacts in the mail. There was a misunderstanding regarding what the optometrist said and what was meant. The policy was that I could bring the contacts back and switch it out for a different brand, not for a refund. I was quite upset as that was not my understanding. However, after a few phone calls, the owner of Vision Source Eyecare gave me a call and informed me that he was working on revising the policy as this was not a situation they see very often. After a few days, he called me back and reassured me that he took a second look at their return policy and decided to make it more customer friendly to allow for flexibility when customers are unhappy with the product. Although I was initially upset, I am now a very satisfied customer not only because the service they provided was top notch, but they were also willing to work with their customers to resolve any issues they may have. I will be coming back for my yearly check-ups and will be recommending to my friends, family, and co-workers because of their high quality of service. read more

This is my second year with them. I absolutely adore this place. The doctors have been wonderful to us. They have advised me both years that I could go without getting new glasses because my prescription barely changed. The staff helped me pick out glasses & even were patient when my husband made me walk back in to change to the frame that I wanted instead of the one that was fully covered. Bear with me as I explain this story, I promise it's going somewhere: In mid-2016, I was downtown doing photography for a news organization of the Donald Trump rally and coinciding protest. I'll keep politics out of this, and make it short: while snapping some shots of attendees leaving the rally, one couple was apparently not happy about having their faces captured at the event, and the husband took a swing at me and my camera. I survived, but the camera did not, and I had some concerns about blurred vision afterward. I ended up visiting Insight Eyecare (now renamed to Vision Source Eyecare) to get a check-up and make sure everything was A-OK. I had multiple eyes surgeries as a kid to correct esotropia, so I'm also quite familiar with ophthalmologists/optometrists. The check-up showed that everything was just fine, and I took advantage of the visit to adjust my prescription as well. Unfortunately, the prescription was way, way off. I think they inverted the measurements, in fact, because I've tried on a substantial number of glasses in my life and never had my eyes spazz out that much before. I took the pair back to Insight's office for an inspection, and they confirmed the Rx was quite off. I was re-examined, the prescription adjusted, and.... same issue. Slightly less nauseated, but still totally unusable lenses. I returned once again and was told that "my eyes might need to adjust to the new prescription for a few days". As any lifelong glasses wearer will know, your prescription changes quite frequently (especially in your teens), so I'm very familiar with what a "normal" amount of adjustment feels and looks like. This was a completely incorrect prescription, and wearing those glasses would have had substantial negative side effects on my vision as it fought to see through the wrong Rx. Eventually, I just gave up and hand-fixed my old pair of glasses. I'm still wearing those to this day, and looking for a solid eye doc in the Crossroads/Downtown area once again. I'm just not sure how one can be *so* far off with the prescription; that's what has been so confusing to me. Maybe their equipment has issues? read more

Had my first appointment there today. Everybody was incredibly friendly and i wasn't kept waiting for my appointment. After having a week full of cancelled meeting and late appointments, this was a breath of fresh air. Nothing makes me more annoyed than having to sit around in a god awful waiting room when i was on time for an appointment. The exam was quick and efficient, and more importantly, i feel like i can see better than I've been able to for years! -- On a side note, the diplomas on the wall all had a woman's name on them, so i wasn't mentally prepared for the super hot male optometrist who walked through the door of the tiny little examining room. with he and i on opposite sides of whatever machine he used to check my eyes, my heart was all aflutter. However, when looking at their website i noticed he's married. Oh well. I guess the optometrist IS the perfect place for some eye candy -- They had some excellent deals on contacts, and when combining that with my insurance i paid what felt like hardly anything for a years supply of contact lenses. They also mentioned some good deals on eyeglasses, however i wasn't in the market for frames today. I plan on getting some soon, however, and i do have to say that their selection, which nice, is somewhat limited. I would like to see more options. Overall, I'm very happy with this eye doctor, and I'll be going back so long as I live in KC. read more

Very mediocre. I just moved to the area, and I went to this eye doctor because of its convenient location. The staff was friendly, and the doctor seemed like a nice guy. But he seemed very rushed. I got a new prescription for both my glasses and my contacts, but both did not work. I ended up having to go to another eye doctor a month later to get my prescription corrected. This place isn't terrible, but there are definitely better options in the area. read more

They were welcoming, no nonsense, and very understanding of what I needed done for my contact prescription. I highly recommend going to Vision Source! 3.5 (blast you Yelp gods for no halvsies) I've been to Insight a few times now, first for my first pair of specs since my freshman year at KU (I know, ridiculous) and most recently for new contacts, as I trashed my last few pairs with a horrible case of pinkeye. (Thanks, 3 year old nephew!) I've had 2 appointments with them in the past week, and both times I've waited more than half an hour from when my appointments were supposed to start. My doctor (cutie Matt E. mentions in his review) was with other patients during this time, so it's not like they were just dilly-dallying around, but I can't help but wonder if maybe they need a better system of timing things? I'd have been glad to have a 9:30 appointment rather than getting there at 9:00 only to wait around and groove to the Beyonce and Dido being played. The space is cute and I got a great deal on glasses last fall. It's incredibly convenient for me (located right next to JP wine bar.) and I won't be switching places anytime soon. Everyone there is really nice and the general experience hasn't been horrible. Perhaps I'm just impatient, but I do like appointments to be kept on time. read more

So, it turns out, I'm getting older. I'm mostly ok with this aside from two or three attributes that I do not want to face. One of these, losing my eyesight! By the time my mom was 30 she was in coke bottle glasses and my dad was not far behind. So, today's visit held the same fear for me that others feel at the dentist's office. I feared hearing that 'blind as a bat' syndrome would be in my prognosis. I was greeted right away and check-in was a breeze. They were able to pull up my insurance information in moments even as a new patient, and I was in the initial exam room within two minutes of walking into the office. The assistant who started my exam was kind and felt more like a friend that I was visiting rather than a professional in an office setting. She walked me over to the next room to wait for the doctor who was there in about 3 seconds. Again, the MD was kind, asked about my history with glasses etc, and helped explain to me what was going on in my eyes-he could tell immediately that I have seasonal allergies and suggested drops etc if they ever worsen. He even said I can call and ask questions at any time if I need help picking out a brand. Again, impressed by their speed and professional attitude. Twenty minutes after walking through the door, I was looking at glasses and having my insurance benefits explained to me. Never did I feel that the exam was rushed, only efficient. The icing on the cake-aside from being given great news about my eyes!-was that the selection of glasses was expansive and covered many price ranges and the interior was modern and made me want to hang-out instead of rush out the door like most Doctor's offices! All in all, a great experience! The exam was comfortable, they walked me through each step so that I knew what to expect, and helped me pick out a pair of sunglasses and glasses to fit my needs...no more wearing sunglass over my Rx glasses! They helped me find two pairs that were affordable and gave me a discount. Because they do not work on commission, I never felt pressured to spend beyond my comfort level. Glasses tend to be pricey in stores like this but Insight was certainly competitive, and in some cases, cheaper from what I have found at other locations. Along as I still have insurance to cover their services, I will be back. I wasn't looking for a new eye doctor when I found Insight, simply an office that my insurance would cover, but they have a new fan in me and I finally found 'my' eye doctor. read more

This was my first visit to an optometrist since....I can't remember. I dont have terrible vision but my job requires me to sit in fornt of the computer the majority of the day. It's not pleasant on the ole eyes. I had an end of the day appt at insight, I didn't have to wait more than three minutes to be seen by the doc who then was very quick and thorough. He explained what was going on with my eyes and why I had been having trouble lately. He also sat with and explained the digital images of my eyes with me. I want to learn everything that I can, ever, so I was actually really excited that he sat with and explained stuff I had no idea about. The location is cool it's in the Crossroads and convenient!! They have a nice selection of frames to choose from. I can't comment on the pricing because luckily my insurance plan covers a ton and it seems my out of pocket expense was minimal. In short, I would definitely recommend insight to anyone. Go on a Wed the doctor is a total babe! read more

Finally decided to get my eyes checked out after over a decade of going without. Glad I chose this place! Everyone was super ridiculously friendly. Dr. Keele was great, explaining that while I didn't strictly need glasses to function (the ones in my pic belonged to someone else, fwiw) I should consider getting some anyway due to my occupation. Basically, I stare at a monitor covered with little tiny terminal windows full of 7-point fonts all day. I had suspected for a while they were starting to look a touch blurry. Turns out I was right. Now everything is crisp and clear, and as a side benefit, I look cool! Thanks, Insight! read more

"I want to look like Sara Palin." Yes, folks, those are some of the first words I heard upon entering this establishment. Another customer-patient was asking for glasses just like this as I started to fill out the paperwork. Maybe I should have listened to the part of my brain that said "Run. And run now!" Anyway, I started this review a couple years ago with three stars and definitely feel like I need to take them down to two stars. So for the plus: The waiting times appointment have been short and the paper work quick. The not so good: I find the office to lack professionalism at times. I don't mind casualness but when you're pretty much close to touching my eyeballs, I do want a certain degree of professionalism and conversations that don't have the word "oops" in them from their end. My first time there, I had taken the time to write my prescription on their forms. The assistant who started out copied it over and wrote the complete wrong prescription. I wrote 4.0 without putting negatives or positives, which one should take to mean as positive. Or at least ask about it. She copied the 4.0 down and wrote little negative signs before that. Thank goodness I was looking at what she was writing because she'd have seriously effed up my eyes with a prescription that was 8 points the other way. If she wasn't sure, she should have asked. This is a MAJOR boo-boo on their part. I now always review what they do meticulously I've also encountered a time when there were no chin papers. You know that thing you rest your head on? All my other doctors had tissues underneath so patients can rest their chin on a non-soiled surface. Not here. I don't know. That's just kind of gross to me. I asked for alcohol and swabbed it down. Also, I know businesses need to make a profit but they really jack up the prices. My contacts have never cost more than $20 a box, and this is in locations that have ridiculously higher rent and costs. They charge pretty much double the price of other places ($25 a box for my Acuvue vs just under $15) so I get my contacts elsewhere. I've only had two other eye doctors in my life (that's basically since I was a kid) and the only reason I switched was because of moves to different states. Both eye places absolutely rocked and I've had super stellar experiences. So there's a higher bar that's been set but why shouldn't the bar be high? Against the two other places, Insight looks like amateur hour. The only reasons I've gone back is it's super close, I'm lazy and I can leave setting appointments for the last minute. If I felt I had even the slightest change to my eyes, this is not the place I'd visit. I basically go here because I need a place that will give me a prescription for my eye glasses and contacts. If I didn't need a script, I wouldn't waste my time going here. read more

Since I was a wee little lad, my eyesight has progressively gotten worse and worse. I mean, I'm not legally blind, but I could be one day. Given my vision challenges, I have to do the whole annual checkup thing so I can keep getting things like contacts. There's lots of things I like about Insight. 1) I got the paperwork on their website so it was done before I went in. 2) It's a small place that isn't full of people waiting around. 3) From start to finish, my exam didn't take more than 30 minutes. That last part is the best. I've had eye appointments that have lasted over an hour and I just don't have time for that. I didn't take the time to look around at the frame selections Insight Eyecare offers, but they seemed to have a decent amount of options. Perhaps I'll go back in the near future to pick up some new spectacles. So, yeah, it's a good place for an annual checkup if you need it. STAY AWAY!!!! This is a scam! Sure, their doctors are licensed (for now - complaints pending), but, as others have noted, they get you for every nickle they can without so much as a hint at what kind of bill you're looking at by the time they are done. Also of note, I had to throw a FIT to get the prescription I paid for ($139.00 WITH insurance!) even though Federal Law requires them to give it to you at the time of the exam. They try to get ANOTHER office visit out of you just to bill you again, before they give it up. TOTALLY ILLEGAL! Wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy. They're scammers!!! read more

They will push an "eye photo" exam on to you with no warning that it isn't part of the basic eye exam covered by your insurance. They try to sneak it in casually as if it's not a 40$ fee out of pocket. Very poor business practice. Even better was after I declined it by clarifying, the optometrist told her assistant that she wouldn't see me if I didn't do the optional photo. The assistant then tried to tell me it would be free "she thought", I told her I want clarification on free from the doctor. The the doctor then was very aggressive and tried her hardest to strong arm me into taking the eye photo. Declined it three times before she angrily told me to have a sit in her exam room so she could "get the eye exam done with" In summary, be very careful dealing with this company. They have very aggressive sales tactics and dishonest add on services disclosures. Furthermore, if you wise up to their used car sales techniques they will treat you very poorly for the rest of the time there. Keep in mind, at the beginning of my exam and check in routine they were extremely polite, so do not trust them based off of this first impression. I luckily read other YELP reviews and was well prepared for their shenanigans. Do not do business with these people unless you absolutely have to. Will not return. read more

I have worn eyeglasses for about 26 years; therefore, I have gone to several optical offices. I had an eye exam at Insight about four weeks ago. A digital retinal scan was done. I told myself, "Good, the insurance now covers it." I picked a pair of frames for my eyeglasses. When the bill came, I was charged for the scan. No one told me that the insurance does not cover it and if I wanted to opt out. I ignored it. Anyway, I would have opted in since I had my last one two years ago. I got my eyeglasses two weeks later. I went to Insight today to have my frames adjusted. When I was about to enter the office, I met Kevin on his way out to throw trash. When Kevin came back, he went straight to me and asked what was wrong with my eyeglasses. I said the right side is lower than the left side. He went ahead and got my eyeglasses. I politely told him that he just got back from throwing trash. He said he would wash his hands. He adjusted the frames. When I put my eyeglasses on they still didn't fit right. He said that my left eye is higher than my right that if he adjusted the frames to the level of my eyes they would be unbalanced at the temples. I had to take a closer look at myself at the mirror and on my phone because he was saying that the frames were OK. I politely pointed to him that the upper right rim is almost at the level of my eyelash, while the left is just a couple of millimeters below my left brow. He said my eyes were not balanced and that he did this every day so he knew what he was doing. I told him I was not questioning his abilities. I was just describing what the fit looked and felt to me. I told him that I understood that every person has some degree of facial asymmetry. To address my very mild asymmetry, I wanted the upper rims to be fairly of the same distance from my eyes. He adjusted the frames one more time. He said the temples were unbalanced. I said they were fine as long as the upper rims are fairly balanced. One thing I would say about Kevin was throughout those 10 minutes, he said and did all these in a studied calm. However, I still will NOT come back nor recommend this place to anyone. I want to go to an office that lets me know before doing a procedure that insurance does not cover it, that listens to the client before making a judgment, and that will take no offense when asked questions. read more

The staff was initially very attentive and spent a lot of time helping me to find the right frames. It all went down hill after that. My glasses were promised in 5-10 days. I called three weeks later and was told there had been a problem, but they would be ready in a couple of days and I would get a call. Next week, no call. I called to check, lots of apologies, but we'll call you back tomorrow. No call. When it got to be five weeks after I had placed the order, I went to the office and requested a refund. They refunded my money with no questions, as if this happens all the time. I took my prescription to Costco and got a perfectly good pair of glasses in almost exactly the same style for half what I was going to pay at insight. read more

I've been visiting Insight Eyecare for a few years now as it is in my neighborhood. Recently I went there with a coupon I purchased online for a discount on frames and lenses. I got a great deal and was so happy about it. The lab had a two week turn around time on glasses, which is the longest I've ever had to wait for glasses. Denise told me the back up was due to the Independence Day holiday. I accepted that and waited for them to arrive. They never called to let me know my glasses were ready. When I finally called about them, the lady exclaimed THEY'VE BEEN HERE FOR DAYS! like I was supposed to know that. Thanks for calling. So I walk over and pick them up on a Friday morning. Absolute madhouse. So unorganized, people all over the place. Denise was too rushed with my fitting. I left with them disappointed in the fit. Noticed that the Monday after my pickup, my lenses were already scratched (it was obvious it was from cleaning, so much for scratch resistant coating). I explained to Denise (again) that they were painful on my ear and left a sore on my ear. She kept fiddling with them but became downright rude when I kept having her change the fitting. She finally decided that my pain had to do with the shape of my head, not the way she was adjusting them. Pretty sure my head has been the same shape for a long time now, i've never had that kind of trouble with any of the glasses I've had in 22 years of wearing them. I accepted her awful customer service and began thinking of where I could take them to have them adjusted or if I should contact OGI for help with the frames (they were great by the way!). So she takes my glasses and tells me that the scratches are under warranty, that she'd send them off to the lab and they'd be back in two weeks. Fast forward two weeks. No glasses. Denise now tells me the excuse is the lab is backed up with back to school sales. She said she'd call the lab. I called back a few days later, still no glasses. The lab was still backed up due to the back to school sales said Denise. Fast forward to this week, still no glasses. A month without my glasses I paid for nearly two months ago. She told me on Wednesday she contacted the lab and they would be in by Thursday or Friday, so I called both days without glasses. Today, Friday, she first tells me the lab is backed up with the back to school sales, but when I tell her I'm not interested in her excuses, she tells me that because it was a warranty issue, they had to contact the manufacturer for a warranty replacement. So I got the number for their main office and called for a refund. Now I get to wait for a check to be issued for the charge I made on my credit card. Thankfully the company where I bought my coupon from refunded my money without question. I found the frames cheaper online than they were selling them for and will take them to a membership warehouse for lenses and will be paying slightly more than I would've paid with the coupon. To be done with the headache and never having to listen to Denise and her awful excuses again is worth every cent. read more
