Dr. Makedonsky is a very kind soul and good at his profession. My vision with my new glasses are better than ever before. He also adjusted my old glasses free of charge. Worth the trip out to Richmond! read more

Several months ago, Dr. Makedonsky performed my eye exam and wrote a prescription for two pairs of glasses. The prescription stated that it was valid for two years, and he also told me that if the glasses did not work out, I could come back and receive a new prescription at no charge. It took me about five months to get around to ordering the glasses. One pair worked well, but the second pair did not. That's not unusual. When I returned to see Dr. Makedonsky, he could not find my file. Then he told me that because more than six months had passed, I was no longer eligible for a free prescription update. I pointed out that it had only been five months since my exam. At that point, he changed his explanation and said that the limit was actually three months due to insurance requirements (or something along those lines). As a result, I had to leave without getting my prescription corrected. Even if he was correct about the insurance restrictions, this is not the right way to treat a patient. The lack of consistency and the inability to clearly explain the policy made for a very frustrating experience. read more

Highly recommend! Easy access, the 38 and 38R stop right in front. Accepts insurance including Medi-cal. Wide selection of cute frames. Eye exam was thorough and expedited. Was able to schedule an appointment within two weeks. Very warm amd friendly Optometrist, helpful with understanding vision issues as related to using glasses compared to contact lenses, vision changes, etc. Will definitely return! read more

Never had an eye doc cancel on me due to strange phone confirmation policies, so I suppose people ought to be aware of what happened. Be sure to check your phone a bunch. Booked weeks in advance. They cancel appointments on the same day by text. Very unprofessional. They will claim they left a voicemail the day before and their policy requires that you confirm by phone (?). They didn't leave a message the day before - but left 6 seconds of silence and 9 seconds of silence in my voicemail, on the same day. Basically, if you don't reply by text to confirm in less than an hour they will cancel your appointment. read more

Vision Care Optometry - They never left a voicemail :( - Optometrists Near Me - San Francisco, California

You can tell he's a caring doctor. Not sure was he able to find a PT Russian speaking receptionists. The poor doctor has to do everything himself... including filing all the patient's prescriptions/files by the old fashion way.... into a file drawer The office is located on Geary Blvd and 33rd Ave. There's another called Richmond Vision Care which is on Geary and ~ 24th Ave read more

Dr. Makedonsky is a very caring doctor. He takes the time to hear my concerns and explain the rationale behind the prescription he chose for me. When I developed an eye irritation he was able to diagnose the cause right away as an allergic reaction to the contact lens solution I was using. He also cares for the community and goes out of his way to help his patients. read more

I love the efficiency in this Russian-Jewish family run business. Dr. Makedonsky is very thorough at explaining costs, finding the perfect fit, and telling you the truth and everything else that might concern you. He's very easy to talk to, and considerate -- he even apologized for being 5 minutes late on my appointment time. The place is crisp, with your typical optometry office cleanliness and crispiness -- but hearing all the Russian made me feel like I was transported to Moscow (aww memories). My favorite is flirting with the receptionist (their son) because he gets totally flustered and the amusement doesn't let up. Overall -- highly recommend him/them. read more

I came to Dr. Makedonsky because I just wanted an eye exam because we were already paying for the insurance, and it wasn't inconvenient. Even though it was a little hard to understand the woman taking appointments (from the other reviews I believe she's his daughter?), I'm sure it would be nice if someone needed to speak Russian, which several patients that were there around the same time I was needed. However, the doctor himself was very professional, careful, and went into the most detailed description of a problem I had been having for the past three years, which my other doctor (one in Pineville, NC, who would not take my new insurance) ever did. He seemed genuinely concerned that I knew exactly what was going on with my body, and why the eyeglasses I wore gave me headaches when trying to use them to read, and why he was prescribing negative lenses. What possibly impressed me most, however, was that while I was there, a older gentleman who wanted to use his frames for prescription sunglasses wanted to know if it was possible, and how much it would be. The doctor himself authorized the frame being reused (which probably saved the patient money), went ahead and ordered the lenses, and offered to have the patient pay whatever he felt comfortable to reserve them. The total for the lenses was just over $100 and the man told him he could pay $40 now. Most of the time, in my opinion, doctors ask for EVERYTHING up front, however, this doctor showed sensitivity and compassion to this man who it seemed was probably on a fixed income. I understand some reviewers' concerns about the woman at the front desk, because she was dressed rather casually, more so than what one would expect at a doctor's office, but she was friendly and efficient. That counts more than what someone is wearing, in my opinion. Also, I did have to wait for a few extra minutes after my appointment time, but it was because he was working with another patient, an older woman, who seemed very concerned about a problem she was having. This, once again, I see as compassionate and a general care for his patients, though some others who have less patience than I do may have been irritated. Overall, I think this doctor is caring, professional, and personable. read more

I had a very good experience with Dr. Makedonsky. Probably the best I've ever had when visiting an O.D. The exam was quick, efficient, and Dr. Makedonsky was incredibly informative. I was in and out in less than an hour for both eyeglass and contact exams. That's super quick! Very professional, kind, and helpful. The doctor gave me some trial contacts to compare them to my old brand. So far, I like them very much! Frame selection was a bit lacking in the "poor student" department, but if you're into Prada and whatnot, VCO probably will suit your needs. The Outer Richmond office is open on Saturdays if your M-F schedule is booked like mine is always. I definitely recommend getting your eyes checked here if you live in the neighborhood! read more

I'm writing this review again b/c my original one was removed by yelp- I will try to be less mean this time. I really feel compelled to write this review, hence the rewrite. I came here for a regular check up covered by my insurance (just to check my eyes-nothing special.) Dr. Makedonsky's daughter happened to be working the front desk. The reason I mention this is because she was ill equipped to be working there, creating a very unprofessional environment. She chatted with her friends, played on her phone, and argued with her father. I showed up a little early so I got to witness all of this unfold. The most inappropriate part was the dysfunctional family fun. He asked her to do something and she refused; he was unhappy- and they had a little father/daughter moment where they were arguing as if they were in their living room. NOT OK behavior at what is supposed to be a doctor's office. Ok, check up time. Doctor is nice -asks me why I'm here and wonders if I have any concerns. Good, we are moving along. I know that my insurance covered this visit, but he kept trying to tell me that things were going to be extra and he could do them, but I would have to pay out of pocket. I was skeptical about this, so I just had him check my eye health and didn't get any of the extra's. There is nothing wrong with coming here; just a warning to be prepared for some nonsense. read more

This doctor is laughably unprofessional. A simple phone call to have him explain the numbers he wrote on the prescription turned into one of the rudest and most unprofessional situations. Because the woman I was helping IS ON MEDICAID I was trying to decipher his "Aold +2.50" which no one could make sense of. He was pissed off he couldn't charge for glasses (which had been bought from him before but the elderly lady had inadvertently lost) so he refused to help (and I quote). How hard was it for him to EXPLAIN HIS OWN HANDWRITING? read more

Been going to Dr. Makedonsky for years. At first only came because it was convenient to where we lived, but now that we've moved across town we're still coming here! He's good at answering questions and giving you his full attention IN PERSON. Do not try to get him on the phone. Also the lady that answers the phone is not quick to pick up spelling of your name or figuring out what you want over the phone. He's got other patients in office and appointments going on as well, so its understandable that the phone questions and consultation don't work. He's attentive and has recommended numerous solutions for my eyes. He's honest and to the point. read more

I had not had an eye exam in 4 yrs. Dr. Makedonshy explains everything as he goes and a very thorough. The have a great selection of frames and give you there honest opinion. I will definitely go back next year. There prices are extremely reasonable. read more

Dr. Makedonsky was very professional, honest, gentle and answered all my questions. He prescribed me to wear glasses which I really needed. Saturday appointment was very convenient for me since I work full time. Id definitely recommend him to my friends. They have large choice of glasses, I will come back and pick one. The waiting time was a little longer, but overall I had a great experience. Thank you, Dr. Makedonsky. read more

I have been coming here for several years now. Always feel welcomed, very friendly family that owns the place. Usually I am struggling to find frames that fit my face without deforming the frame, but this place actually had a pretty big selection that I could choose from. The frames that they sell are predominantly European. The optometrist is very knowledgeable. He always explains what options with lenses would be beneficial. I know that most of them are not covered by the insurance, and he is very upfront about it. However, those options really do help - like ant-reflective coating, etc. I would highly recommend this place. read more

Dr. Makedonsky is the best optometrist in the city! I've been coming here for a few years and he always remembers our conversations. He explains everything he is doing during the examination, and is very patient with answering any questions I might have. He really takes his time to do a thorough exam and make sure that I am comfortable and I have all the information that I can. The woman at the front is also very lovely! She is helpful and patient, and she was great with explaining what frames were covered by my insurance and helping pick out a style that I liked. I couldn't recommend this place enough! read more

I just had a great experience here at VCO. Came in for a eye health checkup (was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes) and to get an updated prescription and was more than satisfied with the service I received from Dr. Makedonsky. He is very kind and professional and made me feel very comfortable during the entire process. Not to mention he is a UC Berkeley School of Optometry graduate. To top it all off VCO accepts VSP patients. Highly recommended for people in the Richmond district. read more

I was referred to Dr. Makedonsky by a relative in helping me get fitted for contacts. After going to several other doctors with no luck in getting me to feel comfortable with putting my contacts in and out of my eyes, Dr Makedonsky had me in contacts after about an hour. I was almost a pro by the time i left his office. Office staff was very helpful, the office was spotless, and very conviently located. Dr. Makedonsky acted in a very professional manner, and had a very attentive, caring demeanor. I will be recommending him to to all my friends and family. read more

Dr. Makedonsky is absolutely amazing. I have worn glasses for over 10 years and was hesitant to switch over to contact lenses due to a fear of touching my eye. I was always scared to put them in and take them off and thus never used them. After 1 visit to Dr. Makedonsky's office and a few short demonstrations, I was able to put them in and take them out with no problem at all. This is something that Lens crafters failed to accomplish after 5 or 6 visits. The office staff is friendly, the office is clean, and Dr. Makedonsky is very knowledgeable. I have since recommended several friends and relatives and they too have all been quite happy. Greg R. read more

I've been a long time customer. Those who wear glasses know how hard it is to find a good optometry and more importantly good frames. I've been struggling with it until I found this place. Every time I come here a have so many options that it becomes hard to... choose. Never had a problem with my glasses afterwords. Every time I get a new pair I get compliments from my friends and coworkers. Needless to say that I love my glasses. read more

A gem in the Richmond. I had just gotten my nails done next door when I walked past and remembered I needed a vision doc appointment. They took my insurance, so I made an appt. Two weeks later I met with the doc. He's a funny guy, from Kazakhstan, super smart, and super interested in getting me the right glasses. During the appointment when they do the whole, slide a or slide b thing, he did an extra measurement test that I've never had done before. I don't think my prescription has ever been this accurate. When choosing frames he actually encouraged me to get the cheaper option, because they looked better on my face. Legit place. Oh, and I just picked up my new glasses. They fit so well and my brain is still trying to process why it can see so far. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Makedonsky for years. I am a little amazed at some of the other reviews. It seems that they rate everything from Dr. Makedonsky's ethnicity to his staff. I'm going to go out on a limb here and actually rate him as a doctor...i know..it's scary and unheard of. He's extremely knowledgeable and professional. Very courteous and listens to my concerns. They do a great job with suggestions for glasses for every budget. The check up thorough and efficient. I am a happy customer. read more

I had a very good experience with Dr. Makedonsky. I walked in hoping to make an appointment for a future exam, and he was able to do the exam immediately. He was thorough, patient and professional. Highly recommend! read more

My experience was great. They squeezed me in same day (on a Saturday) only a couple of hours after I called. Everyone was nice and professional. Dr. Makedonsky gave me and eye exam and had me try out some new contacts for a week, that are much more breathable than my old ones. After a week I came back and he ordered them for me and had them shipped to my house. read more

Full disclosure: I was a classmate of Mike's in Optometry school. Looking back, I wish I had written this sooner. As you likely know, he was trained as an ophthalmologist. Largely due to politics, his scope of practice is limited here in the U.S. It took me years, but I now realize the compassion he showed when checking my eyes in school. Briefly, I'm at increased risk of vision loss later in life, because of my high nearsightedness. He knew, but we had not learned this yet in class. Maybe similarly, he always argued for science based medicine, even if it put him at odds with an instructor. If I lived in the area, I'd feel fortunate to have him follow the health of my eyes. read more

I can't believe I am talking about the same doctor after I've read the bad reviews. I am absolutely happy with Dr. Makedonsky. I go to his Walnut Creek office, and his receptionist is a nice polite lady. Probably, it happened that his daughter acted unprofessionally, but the main thing here: he is an excellent optometrist. I ordered glasses at Dr. Keener's office - paid $300 out of my pocket - and could not wear them. And everybody in his office was very polite to me. They redid my glasses once and it did not help. Dr. Makedonsky explained to me that the distance between pupils were measured incorrectly and the glasses were a bit stronger that I needed. He wrote another prescription and it worked for me! I wear glasses on regular basis. I am really glad I found this doctor. read more

Dr. Makedonsky made updating my contact lens supply quick and easy. After verifying that Vision Care accepted my insurance, I made an appointment for the upcoming weekend. I like that the people here apply just the right amount of friendly to their work: enough to make a pleasant experience, but not so much that you sneak a peak at your watch. Dr. Makedonsky was really cool to keep it real with me by explaining I didn't need to update my prescription, even though technically my eyes did weaken slightly. He also did an excellent job of going over pricing--how it worked, how much my insurance covered, and what options I had that would affect cost. I really appreciated this, because there's nothing worse than an expert going way over your head, skimping on details and assuming you know all the jargon they do. Thumbs up, Vision Care. The only factor holding back that elusive fifth star is the bathroom's appearance--a tad dark and under-decorated, it felt less than squeaky clean, though I'm sure in reality it was. read more

Professional, knowledgeable, honest, and attentive. I do not understand the comments re Medi-Cal as I recently had to go from private insurance to Medi-Cal and had no issues. Medi-Cal does not pay for glasses or contacts only an eye exam for glasses. I paid a VERY small fee out of pocket for my contact lens exam and was given my prescription to either be filled with his office or at the place of my choice. Dr. Makedonsky was extremely patient and pleasant. I will definitely be returning and referring my friends to his office. read more

Dr.Makedonsky is an excellent optometrist. He cares about giving his patients the best vision examination and explaining everything clearly patiently. He wants to make doubly sure the patient chooses the most comfortable eyewear available for individual needs. Allows his patients to try new contacts for a week and make double sure prescription is 100 percent accurate and the best. Then he questions you to make sure they are completely comfortable for you. He is completely honest and straightforward. Wants the very best for you. I give him my highest reccomendation. And his assistant Julia is very professional and wonderful too. You will not go wrong. Came here yesterday to get an exam and contact prescription. I was visiting San Francisco for the outside lands music festival and I lost one of my contacts right before. I have the ugliest pair of glasses and definitely didn't want them to ruin all my photos! I called this office and the dr was able to squeeze me in his earliest availability and was so accommodating. When I arrived at his office he apologized that his receptionist wasn't in that day so he was slightly busy handling other things and asked that I excuse him if he had to answer incoming calls. After I filled out the paperwork we headed in to the exam room and it was done in 15min! The dr was so friendly, professional, and made me feel extremely comfortable. :) very happy with this optometry!! read more
