I've been seeing Dr. Dabit for a few years and feel very comfortable under his care. I can confidently say he is of the most knowledgeable and personable doctors I've encountered. Every visit feels thorough, and although the office is usually very busy, I never feel rushed. Dr. Dabit takes the time to explain things and answers all my questions thoroughly. That said, I do think the front desk staff could use a bit more training. On more than one occasion, my appointment time has been incorrect, or I've received reminders with conflicting information. It can be frustrating, especially with a busy schedule, but I'm hopeful this is something they can tighten up over time. Overall, I would say the quality of care at EyeCare Associates is top notch. Cataract surgery for my wife in both eyes yielded 20/20 in one eye and 20/30 in the other...much improved over the pre-surgery vision. From start to finish, at both the office and surgery center, top notch patient attention and sensitivity. Technical skills are excellent and patient interaction feels like concierge level service. A big shout out to Dr. Tarik Dabit, the optometrist in Stonestown, who gets the bulk of the patient interaction. This gentleman probably graduated top of his class, because he knows his stuff. If he had his MD, I'd want him to treat everything. You're not compromising anything by being a patient in this practice. read more

I have just completed surgery on both eyes for cataracts and finished my last post-op checkup. Everything is A-OK with 20/20 distance vision in both eyes. Dr Tan did a fantastic job with both surgeries and Dr Dabit was spot on with the follow up post=op checkups. The office staff were very efficient. Dr. Tan's practice tried to rip off my mother (who is over 80) for her cataract surgery. They lied to her, saying that both insurance and Medicare would not pay for the surgery and that therefore she would have to pay out-of-pocket -- and pay in full 2 weeks prior to the surgery, no less! They charged her 3x what the insurance would have paid, and when she submitted a claim to her insurance, Dr. Tan's practice pocketed the insurance payment with no offer of refunding the money my mother paid. I been waiting for long time at this office, last time for my glasses waiting almost 1 hour, now also waiting almost 30 minutes after the assistant put an eye drop on my eyes. I actually at first told the assistant before she took me to a room to instill the eye drop that I am afraid my car get towed, if I can just go out for 15 minutes & back? She asked where I park my car ? I said about 1 block, she said No, so I let her instilled the eye drops, after we drops I was waiting almost half hour then finally I.told front desk I have to move my car, better than keep waiting, she is ok. I found my car get towed un fortunately. I am disappointed to go to this office & waiting for long time, at least spent 2 hours last time at office total from first check in until finished. I love Dr. Samuel Gelbert , never waiting too long w him, but he is no longer at this office. It's been a year now since I've gotten LASIK from Dr. Tan and I'm glad I got it! Last year was a struggle, as I'm sure it was for everyone, and I had already scheduled a week off where I was supposed to go on vacation and obviously that didn't pan out. So I decided, why not get that eye surgery I always wanted and use that week to recover. Plus after a couple of months of foggy glasses I was fed up with glasses at that point. For me personally, contacts never really worked for me because my eyes would always become bloodshot after a few hours. I made an appointment with Dr. Tan's office for a consultation. Even tho his office is near Stonestown, they had me go down to Union Square for the consultation. The staff was very nice and they took my temperature so they took COVID seriously which I appreciated. Dr. Tan had told me all the risks and benefits of getting LASIK and he said I was a good candidate for it, so I went for it. The day of the surgery took less than an hour. It was surprisingly fast, and I was fully conscious for all of it. It is slightly freaky having surgery while you're awake, but Dr. Tan eased my worries and was great at directing me on what to do. Like I had said before I had taken the week off from work to recover, but little did I know that the recovery is basically only a day, you're not even blind when you come out of the surgery. But they do require someone to drive you home after as I'm sure that's a liability issue. They do end up giving you these lenses to tape over your eyes while you sleep, which is fine, because I know I can't be trusted. They also give you a lot of papers with great information on how long to take each medicine for, but whenever I had a question, Eyecare associates were great at answering my questions. I was a little worried about my new eyesight because of the brightness of some lights at night, but eventually after time that was reduced. I don't believe it's completely gone, but after a while you forget what it used to look like anyway and get to focus on how great it is to see things without fumbling with your glasses. "WHOA, this looks like a walker parking lot." -Receptionist, Eyecare Associates of San Francisco Come Thursday morning, I woke up with an inflamed eye. I went to work in my glasses (I'm a contact lens wearer) and have everyone asking me, "What's up with the glasses?" I tell them I might have pink eye and all the responses were, "What did he/your bf do to you?" Unfortunately, my "bf" is a 10lb hairy, toxic gas emitting pomeranian that wakes me up every morning with his truck driver snore. I couldn't get an appointment with my primary physician or my regular opthamologist so I was given a referral to Dr. Solomon Gelbart at Eyecare Associates of San Francisco. I was relieved when they were able to give me a same day 4:15 PM appointment. However, everything went downhill from there. Upon my arrival, I walked in to what I thought was an AARP Convention. Every patient had walkers with tennis ball stoppers and/or canes and were slouched over the seat snoring. I thought maybe my coke goggles led me to the wrong office, so I went outside to double check the Suite number. Suite #448 it was. Timeline of Events: 4:07 PM: Arrived at reception desk. 4:16 PM: Finally, got acknowledged and given new patient forms to fill-out. 4:20 PM: ZzZzZzZ *crows feet start forming* 5:18 PM: The receptionist asked for my medical history (shouldn't that be in the new patient forms?). 5:22 PM: My name is called and I scream to myself like I've just won the lottery, "YES!". 5:34 PM: After an eye exam, I was told, "You may go back to the waiting room now and the Dr. will see you soon". (WTH?!?! You mean, you aren't the Dr.?!?!? #*@&) 5:35 PM: ZzZzZz *white hairs start sprouting* 6:00 PM: My name is called again and I go to the back. 6:01 PM: ZzZzZz *turkey neck starts sagging* 6:14 PM: Dr. Gelbart walks in. 6:20 PM: I leave the office. Although Dr. Gelbart apologized for the wait, a 2 hour wait with an appointment is absolutely ridiculous and inexcusable! I could have been seen faster at the ER (which I had been before). And, if they knew they were going to be busy (as they admitted), well then don't overbook your appointments. I have to add that the receptionist told another patient that he was after me but Dr. Gelbart saw him first. With the atrocious wait, no wonder everyone was disintegrating in the waiting room. I waited a week after my procedure to write this review to be sure I still felt the same way a week later. I would say that I am even angrier than I was after my procedure. I went in for a chalazion (stye) removal. I have had this surgery done at least 4 other times by other doctors with no issues whatsoever. I saw warning signs early in the visit as the Dr. (I don't even know who he was, he didn't introduce himself) started squeezing on my stye in a rough way. Fast forward to the surgery, the doctor injects me with numbing medication in one location, all my other surgeries the doctor's carefully numb multiple parts of the eyelid. When the procedure starts, he flips my eyelid and the pain was excruciating. I have never had an issue with this part, or any part of the procedure before with any doctor. I let him know that it was painful, and he sounded annoyed and told me to look down and don't look up or else I could get my eyeball stuck with the needle as he put more numbing medicine in. Then 5 minutes later after the medicine had set, he comes back and flips my eyelid to begin the surgery, again very painful but I just wanted to get it over with. He then starts cutting my eyelid and I ask "Am I supposed to be feeling this?" And he responds with "you should feel pressure." I told him "I feel a lot more than pressure," as I felt the knife slicing into my eyelid. He then says to me "It's fine it will be over soon anyway." After this as I can feel every thing he is doing, I am noticeably uncomfortable. His assistant was pulling on the tool used to flip my eyelid which causes the device to come off my eye. He then has to reflip my eyelid, again causing massive pain. At this point with the digging into my eyelid, and having to flip it over again, I am seriously about to pass out. I told the doctor that I am about to pass out, and it was only then that he started taking me seriously. After all of that, the doctor then proceeds to tell me he would like to pop the small stye that was next to my bigger stye. I didn't come in for this particular stye as it seemed it was small and well managed. He popped it, again, extremely painful as he squeezes it with two q-tips. Now that particular stye a week later is even larger than the one I originally came in for. This whole experience from start to finish was terrible. I strongly urge anyone reading this not to visit this practice. It is a week after from my procedure and I am still bloody and bruised, plus my eyelid is now bigger than it was before. I now have to visit another specialist to get this resolved. Update: December 11, 2020 I want to point out the business owner's reply. It seems as though this business owner is willing to accept credit for a good review, but a bad review is the patient's fault. I should reiterate, I've had this procedure done at least 4 other times. Came in for an eye exam on my OB's suggestion to rule out preeclampsia (I'd see blind spots briefly, which used to happen right before a migraine). The assistant who took down my symptoms rolled her eyes at me and shook her head when she thought I wasn't clear enough in describing my symptoms. I get it, they were 45 min behind schedule, but pretty sure I wanted to be done at least as quickly as Claudia was itching to get me out. Everything after that was fine, and Dr. Tan was patient yet efficient explaining what I was experiencing. This might be a great place if you need eye surgery, but go elsewhere for something minor - my routine eye exam took from 10:15am to 12:35pm, and the rudeness did nothing to expedite the process. read more

I initially gave Dr Tan an excellent post on Yelp. I have since deleted it. After my initial post, my experiences with Dr Tan have been problematic. I have found him to be contentious and condescending. For example, in my last appointment he walked into the exam room and asked, in a petulant manner, "Why are you here? I have no idea why you are here". No hello. No how are you. Contentious. I was there due to an issue with my left eye. This issue had been brought to the attention of his associate, Dr Lee, who recommended the appointment, also the front desk receptionist when making the appointment and his assistant who came into the exam room minutes before. Yet Dr Tan had no idea why I was there. When he examined my eye he initially said he could not see anything. This is after I sent a photo to Dr Lee. Dr Tan obviously did not bother to look at the photo prior to my appointment. I could see the problem, my girlfriend could see the problem, an ophthalmologist I made an appointment with this week could see the problem. Perhaps Dr Tan should give himself an eye exam. After going back and forth, Dr Tan did eventually concede he did see something. He then went into a spiel about the whites of the eyes that only another ophthalmologist would understand. I had no idea what he was talking about and he knew it. Condescending. Zero empathy. He did finally determine the eye problem was no big deal. But I did not know that. That is why I made the appointment. I left the exam room apologizing for making the appointment. And this was not the only time I had a bad experience in Dr Tans office. People these days like to complain, or find this or that wrong, and are really nit picky, we are unfortunately in the age of "Entitlement". Unfortunately I did not buy my glasses at Dr. Tans office because I simply did not look around, and inspect, I should have asked more questions, I just was thinking Ophthamologist, not Optometetrist. Dr. Kevin Tan I think is a good lobbyist, influence peddler, fix it man, someone who is an insider with a vast amount of contacts, a Roladex. The Good Dr. Should engage with his patients 3 times a year to discuss what he has been doing as an eye Doctor, and the many different institutions that he has been working with, and dealing with in the City and County of San Francisco. You have a good Front Man with Dr. Kevin S. Tan. In the City and County of San Francisco you need a Fix it Man, that is very very important. It would be great for Dr. Tan to Host 3 pot lucks each year with his patients. People always need a Fix it person. We all have money, we just need things fixed in a City of Willie Lewis Brown Jr., getting things fixed is not a bad thing, it is a good thing. The Good Dr. Dr. Kevin S. Tan and his staff are very organized, and efficient, everything went like clockwork, going through all the procedures with my eyes, and very glad that my eyes are ok, it was very thorough, he and the staff covered everything, moving from one room to the next. After her careful examination, Dr Tran advised that my prescription changed quite a bit, but since I ordered my contact lens, she advised to recheck my prescription when I pick up my contact lens before I order my glasses. I really enjoyed the experience here. The staff are true professionals and everything was done efficiently. Dr. Tan took his time to fully understand my issues and did an outstanding exam. I had the eye exam for the annual check up and returned a week later for the contact exam and fitting. I did have to wait but that's not a deal breaker. It had been a few years since I visited Eye Care Associates in San Francisco. With all the downtime of Covid19, I've been catching up on my appointments including reinstating my routine appointment of every so years to an ophthalmologist. Though I'd visited their Stonestown location in the past, I decided to go to the one at 360 Post Street since it was closer to my office. Let me start with this location at 360 Post Street. If you're concerned about potential HIPAA violations, or at the very least, having your private health information heard by everyone, patients, staff, etc. the walls at this particular office are paper-thin. While waiting to see Dr. Gelbart, I could hear everything a patient just on the other side of the treatment room I was in was saying. I do mean everything. Secondly, I would caution ANY individual seeking service from Dr. Gelbart to please go elsewhere or see another doctor from this office. After what I experienced with him, while I sat there vulnerably with my eyes blurry from drops as part of the procedure, I wouldn't want another patient to go there with similar health pieces to my own only to be insulted and shamed for simply living your life on your terms. I returned to Dr. Gelbart who I'd seen at the Stonestown location some time ago. To be clear, I was there for an ophthalmology appointment, not for a routine physical, which I'd had just a couple of weeks earlier, not for an appointment with another specialist per any other health reasons but specifically for O-P-H-T-H-A-L-M-O-L-O-G-Y. As we began, what I believed to be a routine ophthalmology appointment, Dr. Gelbart took it upon himself to show me his personal cell phone with an app that tracks a certain health condition his daughter has. While I was polite as he explained the intricacies of this tracking app on his cell phone which he used to track his 30 year old daughter's health, which we all know like any technology held close to the body, is not healthy and certainly any phone can be hacked, I let him know very clearly, I wasn't interested in the app nor being tracked health-wise in such a way. My answer, which was reasonable, polite, yet direct seemed to set Dr. Gelbart off on a tirade of insults to me, personally and about my health with a tone and volume that could be heard throughout the office. Dr. Gelbart first let me know that I, "really needed to be humble." He said this multiple times to which I looked at him in disbelief! I didn't know Dr. Gelbart was a psychologist in addition to being an ophthalmologist and this was part of his services? I firmly attempted to set a boundary and let him know that I was there for an ophthalmology appointment and could we please proceed. He simply wouldn't let up at this point. Dr. Gelbart lost all professional pretenses and tore into me with his litany of insults about my personal choices for my body and my health in a tone and with words that would make most people back down. When I didn't back down and essentially told him my choices for my body are my own, Dr. Gelbart asked me more personal health information which, when I gave my answers, he responded in a degrading tone bereft of compassion or empathy. I let him know, at least once during Dr. Gelbart's checked-out, ungrounded and verbally abusive attack that I was there for an ophthalmology appointment and could we please get on with it. I'm still in shock and have been since my appointment this past week. I honestly couldn't tell you when I finally got up, went out of the paper-thin walled office we were in, went to the front desk to pay and leave, never to return. On my way out of the treatment room he mentioned something about my personal state of health, which I'm obviously not going to mention here, with the sliding door open, in full earshot of his two employees at the front desk. Though the walls are already paper-thin at this office, and everything Dr. Gelbart had said could clearly be heard by anyone there, when he decided to open his mouth about my personal health pieces while opening the door, this was a clear HIPAA violation and will be reported to the proper authorities. Dr. Gelbart CHOSE to take out his frustrations, anger and whatever other nastiness he had pent-up within him that day to pour out onto me, a PATIENT in his practice seeking a routine ophthalmology exam. Once again, I would caution ANY individuals against seeing Dr. Gelbart for ophthalmology services to save you from experiencing the insults and abuse I did during my visit to 360 Post Street. read more

I selected this practice based on the positive reviews and convenient location, but was severely disappointed by the delays and poor customer service. I arrived on time for a 4:00 PM Appointment, and was shown to a waiting area 30 minutes after arriving. After an initial 5 minute assessment by an assistant, I still had to wait over 30 minutes just to be seen by the one doctor in the office who was otherwise preoccupied with getting photos done of herself by a photographer. Also surprising was the lack of a sincere apology for the wait, or any empathy for how this had impacted my schedule. This is not rocket science. You should staff up to handle demand, and save things like photo shoots for times when no patients need to be seen. read more

Great Experience! My first appointment at Eyecare Associates of San Francisco was fast, educational and thorough. I arrived early for my visit and I was greeted by a warm and friendly receptionist. I waited for about 5 minutes in the cozy sitting room before the opthalmic technician invited me in to run a series of routine tests. She was very helpful and efficient. Soon after I met with Dr. Tran who was very friendly informative and professional. I liked how she was very thorough and walked me through every step of the exam. I felt very comfortable as she examined my eyes for both vision and health issues. I was in and out in about an hour and left thinking about how organized the practice was. I would recommend this practice to any of my friends and family looking for a great eye care experience! read more

Got LASIK by Dr. Tan & would definitely recommend! Side note: I started going to Dr. Ahn for my regular optical appointments per a recommendation from a colleague (also great - very personalized care compared to the general place I had gone to previously) This was really great because (a) was a one-stop shop & (b) had all my background. I appreciated the thoroughness of the process from the initial appointment (they credit the $50 if you get the surgery) to ensure a good fit before before moving forward. Their cost is all-in, so includes any pre or post-ops (would cover any additional corrections if needed, etc). Ended up being less than 6K total for me & they take FSA (current max is over 2500), so definitely suggest getting the initial appointment before you update benefits for the next year :) read more

I went to the best of the best in San Diego; Dr. Kent Blade, and Dr. Mark Smith, for treatment of the idiopathic eye disease Pars Planitus. I had treatment for my eye disorder for 4 years with steroid drops and injections. Nothing was working, so I decided to take it a whole new level... I had decided to get a Vitrectomy on both my eyes that was performed by Dr. Mark Smith. It gave my normal eyesight back which was great! So now to Eyecare Associates.. My eye was extremely watery, hurt like hell, and I thought it was my eye disorder; and or an issue from the surgery that I had over 5 years ago.....? Heidi the office manager understood what could of been the problem and did not hesitate to get me in right away, and I mean RIGHT AWAY! I got to see the owner Dr. Gelbart who has by far one of the best bedside manners a physician can have! It turns out I had a scratched cornea and that it wasn't anything serious except for the horrible intense sandpaper feeling it had when I blinked. He hooked me up with pharmaceutical eye drop samples so I wouldn't have to wait at the pharmacy, and put me on a regiment that really worked to heal my eye. The Opthamologists here are top notch, very transparent, and blunt with your current conditions. I suffered from a Corneal Ulcer due to my contact lenses, and one of my eyes got infected. Immediately, they scheduled an appointment, and I went in. I ended up screwing up my appointment time, but they worked with me to see me, and immediately provided me antibiotics. They've been very responsive on the next steps on repairing my eye, and I am very impressed at their professionalism and transparency. I will frequent this venue moving forward, even for my optometry visits! read more

I noted that some of the reviews are not updated. My understanding is that this practice has changed hand in the summer of 2015 and now headed by Dr. Tan. After spending a miserable 4-month with Pacific Eye Associates, who failed to properly diagnose and then refused to treat my chronic chalazion, I found Eyecare Associates and Dr. Tan in October. He explained to me what the treatment options were (consistent with what I had found online), and proceeded to treat it with a simple steroid shot. My debacle was over in a week. The chalazion has since subsided with no sign of recurring. Dr. Tan is very matter-of-fact and professional. The day I first visited the office was packed with people, but he still managed to make time to walk me through the pros and cons of the treatment the best he could (he was in a hurry as I could tell). It is true that I had to wait somewhere between 45 mins to an hour in every visit in the waiting room, but same as Pacific Eyes Associate, which I went to multiple times this summer but they never fixed my problem! I would recommend Dr. Tan to anyone who needs a good ophthalmologist. read more

I just moved to SF and it was hard for me to find an ophthalmologist to help me with my dry eyes. I stumbled across Dr. Kevin Tan through my insurance network. I saw Dr. Tan and he helped my eyes so much by adding plugs. His office is located in Union Square so it was an easy walk for me before work (parking can be a little hard but I think there is a parking garage next to the building). I was really nervous before my appointment but Dr. Tan was very patient and explained every step of the process with me. For a few months I had been thinking about LASIK in the back of my mind. I've worn glasses my entire life (20/200 vision), tried contacts but could never get the habit of putting them on and taking them off, plus they'd bother me after extended use. I wasn't really planning to take action with regard to LASIK, just wondered if it was for me or not. I recently went to visit Dr. Kevin Tan for an annual exam and he casually mentioned LASIK as a option for me to consider, and helped me appreciate the cost-benefit of it. Basically, the earlier I get LASIK the less I'm spending on multiple pairs of glasses each year or two which will eventually add up to the cost of LASIK, and then some. I explored the option with Dr. Tan in the office and continued the conversation over e-mail. He was more than happy to respond and very timely. He helped address all of my concerns, medical and financial. The greatest realization I had to face was when I get older (older than 40/45) I'd have to wear glasses again. Turns out that's just a fact of life for everyone and I'd eventually have to wear bi-focals if I didn't get LASIK. After preparing myself for it, I scheduled the operation. I strongly recommend taking something for anxiety before the operation, it was very helpful though I was still quite a bit anxious during the operation. If I hadn't taken anything I probably would have freaked out just for the fact that someone was operating on my eye. All in all the operation was over in probably less than 10 minutes and after resting for a few hours I could notice my vision was already better than without glasses, and it seemed to progressively get better through the night. I e-mailed Dr. Tan that night with some questions about eye maintenance and making sure I understood the recovery protocol. He responded within minutes! After my checkup the very next day I discovered I now have 20/15 vision, better than with glasses! Dr. Tan was great the entire process from beginning to end. I'm really glad I chose him as my doctor for LASIK. He also works out of two offices, one near Stonestown Mall and the other near the financial district, both were convenient to me at different times.
