My friend and I wanted to check out the roof-top bar on a Wednesday but it was at capacity due to a company holiday party. We were told to return at 7:30pm. Hence, we went to check out the hotel bar first. First thing first: Everything is expensive; even items on the bar menu! lol The place was busy but we were lucky to get 2 seats at the bar. I originally wanted to just order a sparkling wine but their drink descriptions were pretty creative so we ended up getting their cocktails. We had: 1) Grand Prix ($14): Campari, Grapefruit, Cold Brew Coffee, Lime, Tonic, Served Long. I thought it was an interesting combination. I definitely tasted the bitterness of Campari but it was the taste of coffee that lingered in my mouth the longest. I think I liked it but I don't know if I would order it again... 2) Section d'Or ($14): Blanc Vermouth, Pedro Ximénez Sherry, Ancho Reyes, Mint, Bitters, Served on Crushed Ice. This drink was so pretty. It looked like a Christmas snow cone. It was sweet and I didn't taste any alcohol in it. Both drinks came with a metal reusable straw, which I was not a fan of. It left a weird metal taste for me and even though it was better for the environment, the fact it's reusable was a turn off. So drinks are totally made with love but I guess I am just not a fan of crafted cocktails (gasp!) 3) Halibut Sashimi ($12): Granny Smith Apple, Horseradish, Daikon. My friend and I shared this dish. We each had a bite and it was gone. We both agreed that the best part was the fried lotus root garnish. Overall, it's a fancy place to meet up for a drink or two. Such a delicious lunch! It started off weird because I had a reservation but there's no formal host stand. That's a little confusing but honestly the service, food, and atmosphere made up for it. Staff is so friendly, easy to talk to, and just great. The decor is to die for. I started with a delicious tuna tartare on fried chicken skin. It was very hearty and refreshing, while the fried chicken skin was the perfect crispness. Next I moved on to the dashi flan, which I think is their name for a chawanmushi. It was a savory umami deliciousness topped with clams and mussels. It was amazing. Last but not least i had the gnudi which was fantastic balls of cheese and fondue and some crispy things that complimented the softness of the balls. It's a rich dish, so I'd recommend sharing with the table. Overall, can't wait to come back and I'm interested to see if they change the menu often. read more

I've had a terrible time trying to resolve an overpayment/billing issue with Villon/Prosper. I had brunch there (our 2nd) before going to a show. We liked the meal enough to go back, but never again. There were 7 of us at brunch, including 2 pre-teen girls, and the total came to something between $250 - $300 if I recall correctly. I paid electronically and don't know if I pressed a number wrong or there was a glitch, but the total came to over $500. I usually tip 20% so $200 - $250 was a crazy amount. I immediately brought it to the attention of the manager, and he said I'd have to call on a weekday when the accounting team was in the office. I called the next week, and there were several months of back and forth regarding the credit card number (some my fault -- some Villon's). There was trouble finding the transaction on their side so I sent multiple screenshots. Anyway, they finally said they would credit my card, and I called with the full number. Villon called back later and said the cc number did not match what was in the system (although the amount of the charge did match) and recommended that I dispute the charge with Chase. Chase told me that as the purchase was made through Square, the numbers may not match as Square generates a virtual number for privacy purposes. Chase also said the window to dispute the charge had passed. I asked Villon if they could just give me a gift card or something, and they said no -- that they had never heard of Square generating virtual numbers and they would only refund the credit card number that I don't have access to. So there's $150-$200 down the drain. Heckuva an expensive brunch! Be careful if Villon provides you with an electronic payment system -- just give them the actual credit card! Also, be careful if anything goes wrong -- this is not the type of customer service I'm used to used to receiving at most places. read more

I took my husband to Villon for his birthday. I was looking for hip ambiance, amazing food, and trendy decor. Villon got an all-around 5/5. We were both thoroughly impressed with the entire meal experience, starting with the server's knowledge of wine, and ending with a special birthday dessert. This was truly one of the most decadent meals I have ever eaten. The food is very rich, and we probably could have ordered fewer items, but I'm glad we got to try so many things on the menu (even if I needed to be rolled home). I absolutely love the decor/vibe of the restaurant. It definitely does not feel like you are on Market Street once you step inside. The artwork and light fixtures ooze coolness. The servers are knowledgeable, professional, and friendly. They have an extensive cocktail list, I recommend trying at least one or two different ones. In terms of our favorite dishes, the bread plate is absolutely mind-blowing. Whatever you do, get the bread. The oysters were also a favorite - beautifully displayed with a delicious horseradish cream. The pinwheel is also a must-have - the combination of mousse, grapes, and bacon is surprisingly wonderful. Last, but certainly not least, we went for the big ribeye for 2, which came with two sides (creamed corn with truffles, and an heirloom and melon salad). The steak was phenomenal!! Came here for Mother's Day tea. We always go to tea for Mother's Day for the past 9-10 years, and this is the first time my husband did not complain about the food. They served 4 sandwiches, roasted quail with asparagus, scones, and a generous assortment of desserts. We liked everything. The roast beef sandwich was the only one we didn't like as much, but it was decent. The service was impeccable. Even the hotel staff were very courteous. The Mother's Day tea was $75 per person, it's pretty pricey, but still reasonable compared to other restaurants' price for afternoon tea on Mother's Day. We dined outside, and they spruced up the area and it still felt festive. I would've docked a star for the vallet parking (I think it was either $15 or $18 an hour) but then this is San Francisco, and this is the price you pay here. Came here on a Friday night, as it was pretty easy to get reservations for 2, even last minute. The interior was really interesting, and the drink menu was extensive. For food, we got: - Hawaiian bread (4/5) - Nice, hot bread with excellent butter. - Peppers (3/5) - A bit of a weird dish, with nori mixed with peppers in an almost creamy sauce. It was decent, but probably wouldn't get it again. - Pasta with shrimp (3/5) - The pasta was overly firm, although the shrimp was really good. - Duck - The one bite I tried off my girlfriend's plate was pretty good. With two cocktails, the bill came out to $140 pre tip, so definitely on the expensive side. The portion sizes were pretty solid, but we probably wouldn't come back for the food. Wonderful brunch here! There were 6 of us and our table was kind of off by itself which was great. Food was perfection. 3 of us has the Proper breakfast (restaurant is located in Proper Hotel) toast, eggs, bacon, sausage and a delightful mix of delicate squash, shitake mushrooms and kale. The rest of the group had porridge with a salad on top and a egg. Doesn't sound great but they raved about it. The service was great at the beginning but when they had trouble finding salt & pepper for the table and bringing more coffee and some jam, it was frustrating. For ambiance and venue, this place is 5 stars. It has so many nice details, like copper utensils, logo-emblazoned ice cubes, and the 7x7 themed drink menu. No surprise they were voted most beautiful restaurant by SF Eater! In terms of food, I was equally impressed. You must get the Everything Hawaiian bread, which, as its name suggests, is a hybrid Hawaiian roll and everything bagel. It comes with 3 different spreads, but my favorite was the blood orange chicken liver mousse, which I thought was super unique. Another highlight was the squid ink tagliatelle, which was not too salty like it's often prepared. My only qualm was that I was expecting uni, but I think it only used uni butter, which was a little misleading. Nevertheless, it was still excellent! I called the Villon at Proper hotel multiple times, including Christmas Day to confirm the change of my reservation for holiday tea, which I thought started at 12pm not 2pm. I made this reservation in early Nov, only to find that the person over the phone who re-confirmed for the new and later reservation did not do that all. The food at Villon was impeccable. My fiancee and I can't recall the last time we had a meal this delicious. We ordered the brussels sprouts, chicory salad, roasted chicken and gnocci. Every dish was perfect. The roasted chicken was particularly remarkable: the chicken was cooked perfectly with crispy skin and juicy breast meat - a rare find. Ambiance was perfect for a date night - noise level low enough to be able to hold a conversation, lighting dim but not dark with a beautifully decorated venue. The service was good and the waitress had the perfect balance helpful when asked for recommendations and always available without being obtrusive/ bothering us too often. read more

We had brunch on Saturday before going to see Moulin Rouge. They advertised a Moulin Rouge "French theme" buffet. The pastries were standard, and could be found at any Holiday Inn. Yogurt and overnight oats with granola were available. Avocado toast was only good item. Shakshuka was mediocre, after we waited 20 minutes for it to be refilled. Waffles were cold. Bacon and sausage were sparse, and when delivered, lasted only a few minutes. Monte Cristy sandwich bites were the only thing French offered, as the scrambled eggs were deeply overcooked. All three of us wanted a drink, but no one came to check on us once they found out we were there for the "Moulin Rouge" special (which was $10 off per person). Very sadly disappointed, and with all of the fabulous breakfast places nearby, would not suggest it. read more

After not getting our drinks for nearly 20 mins, the server told us that they were overrun from serving 'high tea' in the afternoon. This place is pretty much "fine dining" and all the dishes we had were delicious, but the one that I'm still thinking about are the Corn Tortellinis---delicious! Oh, and try the "Grand Prix" cocktail, it's so good and something I've never had before! The service was great too. We had a very nice server. And what I liked as well was that we were able to have a "conversation without yelling" (which has somehow become the norm in SF restaurants) since the music was played at a "normal volume"! There is nothing at all that wasn't perfect. We were seated promptly and the service was as good as it gets, helpful and prompt. The food was excellent, exactly what we wanted for a brunch before the theater. Some reviewers objected to the price but, at least at brunch, prices were well below what we expected and really low for the quality and quantity of the food. This will be a bit of a lengthy review but... Worth it. I stumbled upon Villon while searching for a place to have dinner before seeing a show at the Orpheum. It took several searches which I now find odd but I'm so glad it did finally pop up in one of them. I have dined there twice in the last 7 days and this is what I thought. First - the staff. SO FRIENDLY and wonderful. They have great thoughts about the cocktails, wines and the food. Let them guide you a bit if you're unsure. My ONLY not so great thing was that on my second visit, we ordered 5 dishes to share. We had been sitting there about 15 minutes and dish 3 was already arriving. It felt so rushed that I had to ask them to slow it down. I like to enjoy dining out and not feeling as though I'm sitting in some sort of dining express lane. On my first visit I dined alone and on my second I was with a friend. Both evenings were enjoyable. The food is very good. Some items are fantastic and some weren't so much. This is what I ate and what I thought: Hawaiian Bread - Warm rolls with 3 "spreads". The liver mouse topped with warm nuts was DELICOUS. The butter was, well, butter. The third was unnecessary. It was something sweet to go on already sweet bread. Hamachi Tataki - I had this both nights and it was delicious. Just enough to savor and leave us wanting maybe 1 more bite but still feeling very satisfied. Ceviche - I had this both evenings as well. On night 1 I seriously took a picture and sent it to a friend with the caption "This is HOLY CRAP FANTASTIC!" and I was being completely honest. I could eat this over and over. (I may be there for it again next week) Absolutely loved it. Night 1, it had a touch of spice. Night 2, while still fantastic, the heat had been kicked up about 10 fold. I still loved it but it seems a bit inconsistent. If you don't like spice, I recommend asking about this before ordering. Falafel - Just delicious. Simple, clean, little bity bites of wonderful. Absolutely an "order again" dish. Grilled Octopus - I LOVE GRILLED OCTOPUS. I did not love this dish. The octopus was nice but the beans and the something sweet in there just didn't work. I probably won't order this one again. BBQ Tri-Tip - It was like meat butter. Yes, that's a good thing. SO GOOD and so tender! The maitake mushroom tempura just added a whole new level of delicious to the dish. I do have to say that the daikon almost blew it for me. It just didn't work. It was overpowering and took away from the flavors of the dish as a whole. That aside, the dish is something I will order again. Now I'm going to start pulling apart the dishes. I'm Southern and so is the friend that joined me on night 2. So we both felt these were pretty much a no. Berkshire Pork Shoulder. - Well, it was interesting. The meat was dry. It really needed something to pull it together and keep it moist. The grits and collards...I'm not sure what those were but grits and collards, they were not. The presentation felt very dated and why there was raisin jam on collards, I'll never know. Too much smoke in the "grits" too. A bit less smoke, some good cheeses, chunkier greens with some smoked meat and a dash of heat - That would have had both of us singing it's praises. Dessert - Beignets - Well I will say these were the closest thing to beignets that I have had here in California but they weren't not real beignets. I'm not even sure what the lime, pumpkin-y, custard thing that came with it was but it was a hard pass at our table. The flavors just don't work. Cheesecake - This needs another name. It is so deconstructed that it's really just stuff on a plate with a made-up name. The "cheese" was good but honestly was better with the beignets. The "crust" was a no. Just no. It had the texture of an oatmeal cookie but without any flavor. We both took about 2 bites and left it. So a few negatives but overall a very positive dining experience. I will be returning and I will be ordering more of their wonderful cocktails (I've tried 3 and a few of the wines so far) and without a doubt, that ceviche too, very soon. Happy Eating! read more

We decided to check out Villon after reading about it in Eater, and finding out that the chef used to work at Canlis, a restaurant we loved when visiting Seattle. Dined on a Saturday night. Positives: + Villon has got to be the most beautiful restaurant in the city. The turquoise walls, wooden coved ceiling, unusually shaped mirrors and beautiful lighting, makes for a super lux dining environment. + Cocktail list. Huge and great selection for every taste. A lot of thought went into it! + Food was generally quite good with lots of innovative selections. We had the following: * Hawaiian bread. This is just bread but the most delicious thing ever. In fact I just had a left over piece for bkfast as I type this, and it is still awesome. * Tuna tartare. This was ok. Lots of flavors, but I didn't like the chicken skin cracker. Some bits tasted like the oil had gone off. * Okonomyaki. Delicious with chorizo and prawns! * Steak. Very good. I think the meat was sou vide'd, and really flavorful and tender. The sauce was divine, wish there was more. * Beignets. Really churros. Just ok. * We had a bottle of the Bordeaux that was available by the glass, and it was delicious if a little over-priced at $68 for a village wine. Negatives: - The service was terrible. Not only was not attentive, our server really lacked knowledge, and was obnoxious and condescending on top. Some examples: * The wine by the glass list had one bubbles, from Veneto, but didn't list the varietal. So, I asked if it was a prosecco. I was told, "no we don't serve proseccos (as if there's something wrong with it). It's a sparkling rose". OK, I ordered it any ways, and what would you know, it was a prosecco! * We ordered the Bordeaux, but my husband referred to it as the Cab/Merlot blend. He was first told that they are out of Cabs, then upon clarification, was told that it was not a Cab, but a Bordeaux. Geez. Give me a break. * My husband's drink, just a JW Black on rocks, came 15 minutes after mine. * The server brought the wine, then inexplicably left without opening it, only to return much later, while we stared at our empty glasses. * Our cocktail glasses were never removed. * Our second courses, the steak and the okomiyaki, came while we were half way through our starters. The tables were really small and made eating quite difficult. * We sat around for 15 minutes waiting for our check. The server never came over. We would see him wandering around, but was never able to catch his eye. Finally another server took pity on us and brought the check. What really got me was not just the bad pacing and service, but the "I know more than you" attitude. Maybe we should have given him a resume of all the wine regions we've visited all over the world! Super annoying and ruined the early part of the evening. I guess I should be thankful he made himself scarce. So, in summary, 5+ for the decor, 4 for the food, and ZERO for service. read more

Yum! Villon is a swanky new restaurant in the Proper Hotel and the perfect location for a GNO dinner. Reservations were easy to make online although the only time they had available for a Friday was 9:30. The restaurant is located off the lobby of the hotel and there are some lounge seating areas spilling into the common area as well. The decor is very Great Gatsby and I could see it as a great place tor a date as well. If you end up with a late dinner reservation like us check out Charmaine's upstairs! Here are the items we ordered in ranking of favorites: 1. Tuna tartare: Delicious! Serviced on fried chicken skin with deviled egg underneath it. Crunch, creamy and refreshing. Hits all the taste requirements! 2. Okonomiyaki: I was surprised by how flavorful this dish was! The pancake itself was perfectly cooked and very crunchy and the sauces were both spicy and creamy. Very satisfying! 3. Octopus with mole: My friend is allergic to chocolate so they were very accommodating in placing the mole on the side. The octopus was perfectly cooked regardless and the mole was sublime. 4. Sunchoke gnudi: Great sunchoke flavor and it's served with a sunchoke fondue as well. Perfectly fluffy, great bites! 5. Hawaiian bread: This is one of their top items and I found the bread good but not a super standout. The fresh butter and chicken liver mousse they serve it with, however, hit the spot with flavor. 6. Dashi flan: Kind of a like a chawanmushi with mushroom and all sorts of umami flavor! All in all we enjoyed all the unique dishes and the service was superb as well. Highly recommended! read more

I'll start with the good. The drinks were tasty and the rolls were fresh and delicious ( but ask for real butter and don't ruin it with the seaweed butter.) My friend that got the chicken really enjoyed her meal. The burger and fries looked good as it went by but we did not order it. The menu is a weird combination of ingredients that leave you unsure of what you are ordering exactly. Sadly for a couple of us, it was not a successful experiment and neither of us could or wanted to finish our meals. To top it off the service was soooo slow and they tried to soothe us with an amuse Bouche and some champagne but it didn't do the trick. Inside the restaurant/hotel has a cool vibe but you step outside and you are immediately reminded of how much poverty and substance use has overtaken downtown. It's an unsettling juxtaposition. Our server was honest, courteous, and helpful. Bartender, not so much. Nonetheless, the food was just so so good. Love their food so much not only delicious but also very beautiful presentation! Every dish is so colorful with fresh ingredients. The portion is small compared with typical American brunch but it's perfect size for me or ladies. The vibes of restaurant is good for socializing with friends. Nice decoration inside because it's the part of Proper Hotel property. I would definitely come again. read more

This place is an oasis in an otherwise sketchy part of town. The moment you walk in you are greeted with a friendly face & warm chic decor. I decided to have a salad & cocktail at the bar which proved to be an excellent choice. The bartender Robbie was not only very attentive & knowledgable about the menu but also an absolute delight to chat with & quite handsome. My salad came out perfectly with not too much dressing & the right amount of chicken. I also enjoyed two of their creative cocktails that Robbie recommended.
