French Toast
Sara C.

I hadn't been to this new style of Village Inn yet, but visited this location recently (a few times) and was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed it. (This VI location is right by the Electrify America charging stations we use to top-up our car, so we have been here about three times since we got the car.) The new new design is a little more modern than the old green and orange palette, and the touches of the diner style they have added make it all work super well together. Modern with a touch of the old classic diner ambiance! The service has always been great when we went, even when we were there during/right after the lunch rush or the Sunday morning after-church crowd. Always checking on our drinks, asking if everything came out okay, etc. The food is pretty much the same as the old menu, but they do some limited time menu things and have some more coffee options and new menu items - so there is a bit of a difference! Our first visit, we had the Eggs Benedict (my husband is a huge benny snob, and said they were actually great), and the French Toast, which was cinammon-y, warm, and delicious. On a later visit I tried the Cookies and Cream Oreo Pancakes (which may be a limited time thing?) and they were to die for. Almost a dessert vs. a meal though, of course - but I did have it with the side of sausage and scrambled eggs to cut the sweetness of the overall plate! And on our most recent pop-in, we shared the Slow Roasted Turkey meal, and that was surprisingly great too. It was savory and so filling - it felt like Thanksgiving on a plate (in April!) I've only been to this one location of the newer style Village Inns, so I can't speak for all of the newer style ones (I think the one on 140th serves alcohol, if that's your thing). Not too much is different about the food (a few small things), but I think it's worth it to check this location out, as it feels a lot cleaner, modern, and homey than the old Village Inns we were used to.

French Silk Pancakes and chicken Chicken-Fried Steak Skillet*

We haven't been to a Village Inn in years. So this is the first time checking it out since the rebranding. I'm actually quite impressed with the re-branding. Everything looks so modern and the decor is really minimalistic and goes really well together. We went on a Sunday morning, around nine and to my surprise it wasn't that busy but I was glad we were able to get in right away. I ordered the French Silk Pancakes and my dining partner ordered the Chicken Fried Steak Scrambler. Overall I was a little disappointed in the pancakes, because they were over $11 for three pancakes, with just a little bit of chocolate topping. I'm not entirely sure what I was expecting but French Silk Pie is my favorite so this was a bit of a let down. The Scrambler was actually quite good, and had good flavor all around. This was definitely a better experience than we've had at IHOPs in the Omaha area so I hope the rebrand does well for them.

So much fresh yummy goodness!!!

Gilberts you've been knocked down to number 2. I love the calamari and the dips they came with. It has the perfect chew and wasn't overcooked. It's hard to remember, but I believe my husband had some kind of chicken Alfredo or pasta. He has to write his own review. It was good. I also had a wedge salad, which was delicious as well. The ambience of 402 is nice and seems upscale but at the same time casual. I like that because we weren't dressed up. The waiters and waitresses wore T-shirts and jeans, but the atmosphere is still fancy for a nice date night.

If you get a choice of spots to sit, I would request not to sit on west side of restaurant where there is a long bench seat and tables lined up. It felt pretty close together, a little too cozy for me. The table next to us was in our conversation too often and we could definitely hear their conversation just fine. I'm also not sure what our "Universal Service Fee" was for, but wasn't an outrageous fee. We paid cash trying to avoid the extra fees. In all, it's a good spot as long as you get to chat with your party and not have unintended visitors from neighboring tables.

Most of our group had been to Cheddar's before, and we were all excited to try some new menu items. Overall, the food was a hit. The onion rings came out hot and fresh, the lemon pepper chicken was especially juicy, and the white fish ended up being another favorite at the table. That said, there were a few service missteps that took away from the experience. Two people in our group ordered the white fish blackened, but only one plate came out as requested--the other was pretty bland. When our server eventually checked in (a bit later than expected), we mentioned the mix-up. His response was pretty casual, something along the lines of there just being less spice, and he didn't offer to fix it or have it remade. We ended up just swapping a fillet between the two plates so each person had one blackened and one not. It worked, but it felt like something that should have been handled differently. There were also a few moments where drinks went empty for a while, and our server wasn't around much. At one point, a manager actually stepped in and refilled waters for the table, which we appreciated. Overall, the service felt very laid-back...but to the point where it came across like he didn't care. One bright spot worth mentioning: my salad came out before the meal with a lot more cheese on top than I expected. As I was picking some off onto a side plate, a manager happened to notice and stopped to ask if I'd prefer a new salad without cheese. I explained it wasn't a mistake, just more than I wanted, but I really appreciated the attention and the offer to make it right.

Suffice to say (before reading my long review) it was not on par with the L street location! The staff were definitely new and learning the menu, but that is to be expected any time a new place is freshly opened. Our server, Blake, was nice though and was learning fast. But with a few other servers, there was one thing that did not come about from being a server in a new restaurant. We were eating and could CLEARLY hear the staff around the corner talking loudly and cursing left and right. I am not a prude about language but it's just not something you see every day at a restaurant with families/kids dining. The size of the restaurant seems a little smaller than the L street location, too. That may be a psychosomatic thing when trying a different location of a place you know, but I definitely felt more cramped. The food is on par with the OG spot, so no complaints there. My usual is the bourbon glazed salmon with the cheesy broccoli on the side. So it was just as tasty as the other location, but I think I'll stick to the L street one mostly going forward.

Service Communication…read more Food Valentine's Day...of course they are packed! No worries. They inform us the kitchen is behind and may be a slight wait for our reservation. No worries! Seated within 15 minutes so not bad at all. Place is packed. Tables that were seated after us have a server. Hmmm. About 10 minutes after being seated our server shows up. Very nice but hurried. The other tables were asked if it was their first time; talked about the menu for the evening etc. again, not a huge deal. Drinks were great..an old fashioned and a black Manhattan. I'm assuming it was a manager who came over and apologized for the delay in getting our dinners. Again, we let them know we were not in a hurry. We get the craziness of Valentine's Day. But let's get to the food...did they remove all the seasoning from the kitchen??? Our Brussels sprouts were undercooked and little to no flavor. The steaks had absolutely no seasoning and the mashed were like paste. We had to ask for salt and pepper. Why can't they just put it on the table? My prime rib was blood rare which I talked to the server about before I ordered and said I would like medium and he said they could. Oh and no horseradish sauce like it said on the menu. The saving grace was I had the French onion soup which was terrific. Like I said, knowing how crazy it is on Valentine's Day, we expected a wait. But after waiting quite a long time for our food, I think they could've made sure it was cooked and seasoned properly.
