We had reservations and the hostess put us in the corner, probably where the employees eat the table was Ugly used and worn and carved, compared to a completely empty Restaurant of nice tables, see my pictures. When we got there all the fans were on ( Winter) we were freezing the guy was nice he turned them all off and put the heater on. He was an awesome waiter but ambiance and lack of food on the plate would leave me to lend an extra star to make it to three stars. As we sat there and Regular's were seated much different then us. They were Greeted with it's so nice to see you again seated at a nice table, and let me start you off with drinks and appetizers . Well we live here full time and will probably give it One more try maybe only because the Food is really good. I do recommend this establishment, but be prepared if you order the Sea Bass and pay $ 39 for a plate you are only getting a quarter of that fish. I know this I fish. I was fairly disappointed with my visit. We drive an hour to eat here for my wife's birthday. They recommend reservations so we made one. There was possibly 2 other tables in the entire restaurant, I only saw 1, but it is an oddly laid out restaurant. The first issue was the cocktail I ordered. It listed Chartreuse as an ingredient, which is very hard to get at the moment, but some restaurants do have some, there are also some acceptable substitutions for it, though not many. They were out of Chartreuse, which wasn't the issue. The issue was that the bartender made the drink and served it to me with no mention of that fact. It's an equal parts drink with 4 ingredients, so she just left out 1/4 of the cocktail. I asked her after a few sips and she said that they were out and she put some mango in it instead. Mango allergies exist, you can't just put something in a drink that's not listed, what if I had an allergy. The other issue were around service, incredibly slow, had to wait for the server multiple times, refills weren't prompt. And we were her only table. I also had an issue with the seating choice. They knew we were coming, it was only my wife and I, and they sat us at possibly the worst table in the restaurant. Right next to a TV, the only one in the entire restaurant, that was blaring basketball pregame commentary. Eventually my wife got up and found a remote and muted the tv. The restaurant is beautiful, there are several rooms with nice views, and a better ambiance, but we were seated next to a loud tv, in a room with no views. I would assume so that were were close to the bar, the bartender was waiting on us, but it definitely didn't help the service and just made our whole visit a poor experience. My wife and I don't get to go out very often, so it was disappointing that we had such a poor experience when I was taking her out for her birthday. This was our second visit and it didn't disappoint. Please check hours of operation before visiting. I don't think they are open for lunch anymore and are closed on Mondays. Also, there are a lot of steps inside the restaurant so if you have mobility issues, be cautious. Now that all of that is out of the way, we love this place! The restaurant is in a real villa where a family originally lived. It is on a hillside and we dined in a room with a canopy of trees outside the windows. The food is upscale and this is a place to sit, relax and enjoy the dining experience. When my husband and I were trying to decide where to get away for a few days I asked him where he would like to go to dine again. Villa Montez was his request and this visit was just as good as the first one! read more

Villa Montez has made its way to become a Tyler, Texas staple for me. I currently live in Austin, but still call Tyler home. This place rivals any Austin restaurant of its kind. I beg my parents to take me to this mansion on the hill whenever I get a chance. The atmosphere is great. It's an old mansion restored to look like a Mediterranean elites house. They have a small bar area tucked away that is fun to check out before you dine, and an awesome basement made from an old wine cellar. For drinks, I recommend the cucumber mojito. I don't usually go for these, but trust me, you can't beat freshness like this if you like mojito's it is a must get. This time, my family and I ordered the Oso Buko, a special for the night, that is to die for. Fall off the bone, orange flavored, and melts in your mouth. We also had the New York strip chimichurri steak, which you can't go wrong with. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. This place has great price points and I highly recommend. read more

Ambiance and service was decent. It looks fancy, and has a nice fun and higher class atmosphere, but has higher prices to go along with it, nothing crazy. We spend 65 before tip with an appetizer, 2 entrees and two desserts. Waiter was helpful and nice, but the food was mediocre and had no seasoning. Very very bland. The only real " bad" thing was tres leches. I am a diehard tres leches fan, this was probably the worst I've ever had. It was dry (somehow) and had little to no milk at all. It also had that taste when something sits in the fridge too long uncovered with other foods and you get other tastes on it, if that makes sense. All in all, wouldn't go back but the ambiance was nice, but not worth the price.. ALSO edit, some things were more expensive on the receipt than what they were on the menu, like 3 or 4 dollars more. This was perhaps the worst dining experience I have had in 30 years. It was a beautiful evening, and I had made reservations about 2 months in advance. When we arrived, we saw a haggard staff, apologizing for the wait (we were seated about 45 minutes after our reservation). That in itself was not a big deal - after all, it's tough to know how long people will stay. When we arrived at our table, the family next to us had 3 kids playing video games at top volume (it was a room with just the four of us and this family). I asked the staff if they could reseat us or at least tell the family to turn the damn volume off, but they did nothing. The waiter was clearly overworked. He was always breathing hard and very sweaty from running up and down the stairs. After waiting 20 minutes for him to take drink orders, he came back 15 minutes later and said that he forgot our order because he had taken someone else's order. After another 15 minutes, our drinks and appetizers arrived. Here is the good news: the margaritas were excellent. Unfortunately, that was the only good news. Food took forever and did not come out at the same time (2 plates delivered, 10 minutes later, the other two plates). For the prices, the food was an extreme disappointment: crunchy rice, and food that had clearly sat under a heat lamp for quite some time. They could have fixed this for us by offering an apology, a free appetizer, a coupon for a future visit or something else. Nothing. This was a special day (1 year anniversary of our daughter), and it was the lowlight of our weekend by far. We won't ever return. read more

I ordered a "steak" burrito. It turns out the $16 "steak" burrito is pot roast or at least it was that night. Pot roast makes me very sick so later that night I spent 3 hours in the bathroom and the entire next day in bed. Just a warning because a lot of people can not eat pot roast. I had only had a few bites and brought the rest home but those few bites really affected me. The rest of the burrito had to be thrown out. I will forever more ask what type of meat is being used in a burrito now. I had never thought of asking that before. read more

Went there for Valentine Day dinner. The restaurant was very organized with a special menu for the day. All went smoothly and we were in/out in 1 hour. However, the "organization" was also a problem: the food seemed to have been prepared assembly lines style, which is not what you want on a special occasion. The shrimp enchiladas were great, tasted like seafood and not like a tortilla drowning in cheese. The Chicken Monterrey was also good but uninspired. Staff was friendly and prompt. The lesson I learned is: if you want speed on a special day, go to a fast food restaurant. If you want something special, go on a day when not thousands others are also going. A romantic mansion on top of the hill is the backdrop of the great food! The chandeliers on the ceiling and candle on the table were soothing. The highlight of the dinner was the creative two lobster tacos. This dish was served with black beans, lettuce and fried rice. The ceviche had a generous portion of cooked shrimps, guacamole and vegetables. Personally, I prefer the ceviche crudo with a raw fish base. I should have asked the friendly and efficient waiter Omar the ingredients of this appetizer. Complimentary chips and tomato sauce with fresh herbs welcomed you when you were seated. An old house that apparently was transformed into classy restaurant! I could see this being a great date night spot. The ambiance is upscale with great lighting at night. My dining party wanted to try multiple appetizers and they were all delicious! The ceviche was bright and fresh; the chino Latino rolls had a southwest flare without being too spicy; the spinach artichoke dip was solid as well! The only dish that didn't blow my mind was the complimentary chips and salsa. The salsa was more of a runny, savory flavor compared to a traditional, homemade salsa with fresh elements and spice. For my entree, I tried the Margarita shrimp with rice and refried beans. The shrimp had a flavorful sauce with mushrooms mixed in- Delicious! The beans and rice were an excellent compliment to the meal. Lastly, we snagged a slice of the Tres Leches cake which is VERY SHAREABLE. This slice could feed three people comfortably. Decided to stop by one evening after work for a quick happy hour. They hav edge best Mojitos in town and the variety of flavors is also a plus. My friend and I each order an appetizer Latino rolls and lettuce wrap and we both enjoyed. Service was quick and everyone was very friendly. Traveling to this area of Texas, I expected decent BBQ but did not expect to encounter wonderful south American cuisine. I drove up to the restaurant in awe. The grounds and chateau like restaurant is gorgeous. Half of the restaurant displays beautiful landscaping, the other half has a patio strung with white lights and all mostly shaded by over sized shade trees. Inside is a maze of rooms, very similar in decor yet slightly unique. The restaurant is also available for events and would make a picturesque wedding venue. They have an impressive wine list yet if you linger around the bar long enough the smell of mint is a clue that mojitos are their thing. The menu items are fairly priced with good portions. I ordered El Dorado Veracruz, a pan seared white fish, corn tortilla, with tomato olive caper sauce served on rice with a side of black beans. The fish was served in a hearty portion and surprisingly, the tomato olive caper mix worked well. The black beans were decent as was the rice and went better with the tortilla chips than the tomato-ey salsa. This dish was $12.99 which considering the quality and portion was a well priced meal. One of the owners was on site and could be seen busily making his way through the restaurant greeting regulars and new customers alike. I had the chance to chat with him on the way out the door and found out one of his favorite spots in Austin is Hudson's on the Bend. Clearly, he has good taste. read more

I moved to Tyler in August, dined here for the first time Saturday night. I am mad at myself for waiting this long to enjoy this delicious food. Went on a Saturday night at 6 PM, had to wait thirty minutes for a table. Which I believe to be about average for any Tyler area restaurant. We gladly waiting in the bar area, as many nicely dressed people were coming in and out. I believe there was a Christmas party in one of the rooms upstairs. The food was simply amazing! We started off with ceviche and spinach dip for our apps. Both of which were some of the best I have ever had. For my main course, I had the Chimichurri steak, which was absolutely amazing! The steak was cooked just how I liked it, and had a great flavor to it. Finishing off the meal with a delicious Crème Brûlée. The service was on point. The waiter was at the table no more than three minutes after being seated, and was knowledgable of the menu. My water glass was never empty, and any need was taking care of promptly. I have tried Mexican restaurants in Texas before, and there more often Tex-Mex, but this place was a little more what I dig. I wasn't sure what to order so I asked the waitress to pick something for me, we she brought me the Cillian Sea Bass with Shrimp Sauce. O man it was so good, full of flavor, and the appetizer was yummy artichoke dip with some kind of small burrito cut in half. The draft DosXX was on point, and the dessert was over the top. So glad I had the opportunity to dine at Villa Montez. I loved the view of villa as I approached from the parking lot. It is warm and wlcoming. I loved the interior design and killer ambiance. I had the ceviche which was really fantastic. I had the Maya which was $10 and on a 15" plate, I swear. Both for $20! I could hardly beleive it! They could jack up their prices and get away with it. This was one if the best meals I have ever had! I'm sad it's almost gone. Why is this gem in Flint, TX and not San Antonio where I live?!? No Tex Mex here. This place has a Latin fare. Although it is casual dining, the restaurant is gorgeous. As soon as you drive through the gated entrance you're transported to an elegant place. It reall is a villa set on top of a hill. The cucumber mojito is cool and refreshing not too minty, not too sweet. I had the Chino Latino rolls for an appetizer. The chicken was so tender. Careful though these rolls are a little spicy. For the meal I had the Margarita Shrimp. Unlike the other dishes reviewed this was not a large portion but it was sooooo good! The pesto was creamy with just the right amount of garlic. Yum! Yum! Yum! Finally the prices are comparable to chain sit down restaurants. I spent about $25 for 2 drinks, an appetizer and shrimp. This place is beautiful! We were seated right away by a very pleasant hostess. We ordered margaritas and the guacamole appetizer which all came out quick. When our entrees arrived we were told to be careful the plates are really hot since I have worked the restaurant industry for many years that is always a red flag, our plates had just been sitting under the warmer waiting to be ran, our server never came back to check on us, I really needed hot sauce since it was so bland. I could see our sever below talking to another sever so I gave it some time, still didn't come, so I went down to ask for tomatillo sauce the red kind (there is a green and red kind) the male server told me it's green and I said okay well can I just have a red hot sauce then sure no problem..I sit down and he then comes back to tell me again that the tomatillo sauce is green and not red still no hot sauce. He finally brings me some in a bowl. By this time my food is extremely cold and hard to even eat. Probably the worst dining experience I've ever had. Every time my family and I get together for dinner we always choose this restaurant. The setting is just beautiful and the staff is super friendly. I recommend sitting at the patio if the weather is nice. The chips and salsa are complimentary, which I recently found out is unheard of up north. The salsa is fantastic! The perfect blend of sweet and spicy. I typically go through three to four bowls, myself. As far as drinks go, they have a full bar and a pretty good beer and wine selection. My favorite is the Top Shelf Ultimate Margarita. They place half a lime in the concoction and it is so refreshing on a balmy Texas summer night. The menu has a pretty good selection but I always go back to the California Chimichanga. The flavors are rich and there's always plenty of leftovers. Highly recommend this restaurant!
