I ordered a "steak" burrito. It turns out the $16 "steak" burrito is pot roast or at least it was that night. Pot roast makes me very sick so later that night I spent 3 hours in the bathroom and the entire next day in bed. Just a warning because a lot of people can not eat pot roast. I had only had a few bites and brought the rest home but those few bites really affected me. The rest of the burrito had to be thrown out. This was our second visit and it didn't disappoint. Please check hours of operation before visiting. I don't think they are open for lunch anymore and are closed on Mondays. Also, there are a lot of steps inside the restaurant so if you have mobility issues, be cautious. Now that all of that is out of the way, we love this place! The restaurant is in a real villa where a family originally lived. It is on a hillside and we dined in a room with a canopy of trees outside the windows. The food is upscale and this is a place to sit, relax and enjoy the dining experience. When my husband and I were trying to decide where to get away for a few days I asked him where he would like to go to dine again. Villa Montez was his request and this visit was just as good as the first one! read more

Villa Montez has made its way to become a Tyler, Texas staple for me. I currently live in Austin, but still call Tyler home. This place rivals any Austin restaurant of its kind. I beg my parents to take me to this mansion on the hill whenever I get a chance. The atmosphere is great. It's an old mansion restored to look like a Mediterranean elites house. They have a small bar area tucked away that is fun to check out before you dine, and an awesome basement made from an old wine cellar. For drinks, I recommend the cucumber mojito. I don't usually go for these, but trust me, you can't beat freshness like this if you like mojito's it is a must get. This time, my family and I ordered the Oso Buko, a special for the night, that is to die for. Fall off the bone, orange flavored, and melts in your mouth. We also had the New York strip chimichurri steak, which you can't go wrong with. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. This place has great price points and I highly recommend. read more

This was perhaps the worst dining experience I have had in 30 years. It was a beautiful evening, and I had made reservations about 2 months in advance. When we arrived, we saw a haggard staff, apologizing for the wait (we were seated about 45 minutes after our reservation). That in itself was not a big deal - after all, it's tough to know how long people will stay. When we arrived at our table, the family next to us had 3 kids playing video games at top volume (it was a room with just the four of us and this family). I asked the staff if they could reseat us or at least tell the family to turn the damn volume off, but they did nothing. The waiter was clearly overworked. He was always breathing hard and very sweaty from running up and down the stairs. After waiting 20 minutes for him to take drink orders, he came back 15 minutes later and said that he forgot our order because he had taken someone else's order. After another 15 minutes, our drinks and appetizers arrived. Here is the good news: the margaritas were excellent. Unfortunately, that was the only good news. Food took forever and did not come out at the same time (2 plates delivered, 10 minutes later, the other two plates). For the prices, the food was an extreme disappointment: crunchy rice, and food that had clearly sat under a heat lamp for quite some time. They could have fixed this for us by offering an apology, a free appetizer, a coupon for a future visit or something else. Nothing. This was a special day (1 year anniversary of our daughter), and it was the lowlight of our weekend by far. We won't ever return. read more

Went there for Valentine Day dinner. The restaurant was very organized with a special menu for the day. All went smoothly and we were in/out in 1 hour. However, the "organization" was also a problem: the food seemed to have been prepared assembly lines style, which is not what you want on a special occasion. The shrimp enchiladas were great, tasted like seafood and not like a tortilla drowning in cheese. The Chicken Monterrey was also good but uninspired. Staff was friendly and prompt. The lesson I learned is: if you want speed on a special day, go to a fast food restaurant. If you want something special, go on a day when not thousands others are also going. This place is beautiful! We were seated right away by a very pleasant hostess. We ordered margaritas and the guacamole appetizer which all came out quick. When our entrees arrived we were told to be careful the plates are really hot since I have worked the restaurant industry for many years that is always a red flag, our plates had just been sitting under the warmer waiting to be ran, our server never came back to check on us, I really needed hot sauce since it was so bland. I could see our sever below talking to another sever so I gave it some time, still didn't come, so I went down to ask for tomatillo sauce the red kind (there is a green and red kind) the male server told me it's green and I said okay well can I just have a red hot sauce then sure no problem..I sit down and he then comes back to tell me again that the tomatillo sauce is green and not red still no hot sauce. He finally brings me some in a bowl. By this time my food is extremely cold and hard to even eat. Probably the worst dining experience I've ever had. The highlight of the dinner was the creative two lobster tacos. This dish was served with black beans, lettuce and fried rice. The ceviche had a generous portion of cooked shrimps, guacamole and vegetables. Personally, I prefer the ceviche crudo with a raw fish base. I should have asked the friendly and efficient waiter Omar the ingredients of this appetizer. Complimentary chips and tomato sauce with fresh herbs welcomed you when you were seated. We were put in a far corner room, which would normally be lovely however it was difficult to flag down our server when we were very cold to request the fan be off. ( no one else was in this area with us.) food is high price point so I did expect a bit more than what we received. Plating was mediocre, and the steak lacked salt. An old house that apparently was transformed into classy restaurant! I could see this being a great date night spot. The ambiance is upscale with great lighting at night. My dining party wanted to try multiple appetizers and they were all delicious! The ceviche was bright and fresh; the chino Latino rolls had a southwest flare without being too spicy; the spinach artichoke dip was solid as well! The only dish that didn't blow my mind was the complimentary chips and salsa. The salsa was more of a runny, savory flavor compared to a traditional, homemade salsa with fresh elements and spice. For my entree, I tried the Margarita shrimp with rice and refried beans. The shrimp had a flavorful sauce with mushrooms mixed in- Delicious! The beans and rice were an excellent compliment to the meal. Lastly, we snagged a slice of the Tres Leches cake which is VERY SHAREABLE. This slice could feed three people comfortably. Decided to stop by one evening after work for a quick happy hour. They hav edge best Mojitos in town and the variety of flavors is also a plus. My friend and I each order an appetizer Latino rolls and lettuce wrap and we both enjoyed. Service was quick and everyone was very friendly. To start the service was amazing and very attentive, the ambiance was welcoming and made you feel at home, and the food ( tear falls down my cheek) was to die for! I have been to many mexican/latin food places in Texas and can confidently say this was my favorite. I highly recommend the chimmichuri steak and Latino rolls, you wont be disappointed. We came here for dinner last Friday night. We were visiting in town and heard good things about this place. The house is beautiful! When you drive up the long driveway, it is very enchanting. Parking was a little cramped, but we found a spot in the lot behind the house. The hostess told us we would have a 20 minute wait for our group of 4. We said ok and hung out at a table in the TV area. 2 in our group put in their drink orders from the bar. We had only waited maybe 3 minutes when they said they could seat us. Our waiter was Nathan and he was fantastic. He kept our drinks filled and was very attentive to whatever we needed. Great guy! They serve complimentary chips and salsa, so we started with that. Me and one of our friends ordered the Osso Bucco which was featured as a special. My boyfriend got a Steak Quesadilla and our other dining companion got the Chimichurri Steak. Everything was delicious. They learned we were also celebrating a birthday so they brought out a massive piece of Chocolate Cake for us all to split. It was super yummy. What a gem to find in obscure Tyler TX! Villa Montez claims to be "latin american" rather then lowly tex-mex, but 95% of the food is tex-nex, though admittedly high end. They have chicken tinga, guajillo-orange sauce, and jalapeno jelly snuck into their dishes, which is great! The salsa for the chips had a rather odd deeply tomatoey flavor, almost italian. Not necessarily bad, but odd. The only flaw in the guacamole was my granddaughter ate it all before I had more than a single bite. Wife had a bowl of brazilian coconut chicken soup & liked it. Daughter-in-law got fish tacos, ate them really fast, then reported an off-putting bitter element. But she still ate it. Son got chimichurri steak & really liked it. Grandkids had chicken milanesa, which turned out to be battered instead of breaded (the usual). The burritos were COLOSSAL. Be warned. My usual practice when i go somewhere for the first time is to order the dish named after the restaurant. Its always special. So i got the Villa Montez Steak. It was a good little sirloin on top of some fabulous tomatoey beans. It was accompanied with some shrimp & vegetables in a sauce that was so sweet it eventually became cloying. Good until i had just that one bite too much. Their diet pepsi was so bad i swapped it out for club soda. They comped all our drinks for the meal because there had been a slight delay in service. I thought that was nice. The venue is perfect. A romantic old mansion on a hill. Glorious. Not every dish was perfect but it was more a matter of tastes differing rather than error. My husband and I visited last week and brought our family who was visiting us from Florida. The last few times we have had dinner or lunch here it seems the food quality keeps getting worse. The queso was not good at all the onions and peppers were hard and chewy and the rice on all of our dishes was barely warm and crunchy. Needless to say my husband and I agreed to never visit again. I have always loved this restaurant. But last weekend was the worse experience I've ever encountered at any restaurant I've ever been too. The Service was a joke. Bathrooms were a disgrace. I had family who flew in for a visit and I was so excited to take them to this restaurant, but sadly ended up being so embarrassed by our experience that night. I had to call for the Manager and took her aside to let her know of all of the issues we were having. All she kept saying was what can I do to make it better. Ugh really? Get your staffs act together is what was needed. Just a few of the problems were: We waited for 25 minutes for drinks. They didn't have enough menus. The waiter Nick was in the midst of taking our orders and stopped one of family members mid sentence and said I'll be right back I have to go serve another tables food. We were all so stunned he did that. There were other customers who were experiencing the sane type of horrible service. Omg and the bathrooms....no toilet paper, no soap, trash cans piled high with trash Your restaurant missed out out on a lot of revenue that night. Shame on these owners who aren't keeping an eye on this place. The whole place was in disarray that night. We will never go back. The manager did not have control of the restaurant at all. read more
