Craving a taste of Colombia without leaving New Jersey? Colombian food embodies a sense of delightful magic that'll have your taste buds tingling at the first bite. This South American cuisine is woven from a rich blend of cultural influences reflecting the heritage of the indigenous and the Spanish. Some common favorites are bandeja paisa, chicharró (fried pork belly), black beans, rice, plantains, avocado, and an arepa. Located in the heart of Hackensack on Mercer Street, this establishment has been at the former site of OG of Colombia since 1990, where my partner, our friends and I decided for lunch. Just ask any local, and they'll tell you that Villa de Colombia is one of the best and most authentic BYOB restaurants for Latin cuisine in Bergen County. The reservation was easily made by calling into the restaurant for a party of 5. Upon entering as first-timers, we were greeted by the staff and got a table right away in their comfortable, clean, and cozy-vibe interior at their main dining room. The menu features authentic Colombian cuisine. But as evidence of the ever-expanding community, they have integrated other Latin American and Spanish recipes--something for everyone. As an appetizer, I decided on the beef empanada. For the main meal, we opted for Pechuga De Pollo En Salsa De Champiñones, Tamal Colombiano, Quesadilla Mixta, and Quesadilla Colombiana. Complimentary warm arepitas with hot sauce started our meal. The food was served hot, well prepared, full of flavor, tasty, and delicious. The quality and amount of food one gets for the price is unbeatable. The service was professional, friendly, and not rushed, and our server was Esteban. This was a real treat where all the boxes were checked, which we can recommend.

The service was great incredibly welcoming the waitress spoke Spanish and English. The food came quick and the portions are like I've never seen before. We got paella marinera and o swear that was enough food to feed a family. I also got the tres mosqueteros, the best churrasco I've had in my life. Great setting as well very clean and organized, loved it.

Delicious! Love love loved it all, from the staff to the place and to the food! The prices were very good. If I'm around the area I am definitely coming back!

Great service and food. Baby Churrasco and Bandeja Paisa recommended. Cafe con leche/Late also really good. The outdoor space looks really nice and there enough tables. The place has a cozy atmosphere to spend time at anytime of a meal. Noticed people arriving with their own bottle/s of wine. BYOB, I'd say is a plus.

Excellent as always! They opened a lovely patio area that is covered however the weather has been very bad so we decided to stay inside and good thing because it was a monsoon. I was most looking forward to having an app of Morcilla, blood sausage which they make fairy good here but our waiter said they did not have. He saw Howell sad that made me and he said he would ask the kitchen and he came out with the amazing news that they had some. I scarfed it down so quick I couldn't even take a picture but it was quite possibly the most delicious one I've had there today. For an entrée I had the Punta de Anca, cap steak, which came with a side, I chose the fried cassava. I was shocked when I received not one, but TWO thick, juicy and perfectly executed medium rare steaks. My mom got the Plato de Frijoles, a plate of rice with a fried pork strip, a small pot of beans and a side of plantains. She was raving how wonderful it was and I stole a piece to confirm it. We were way too full to even consider dessert. This place has been a staple for visits for years as they have always been very kind and attentive with amazing food. Oh yeah, it's also BYOB!

I came here for the lunch special which was only $10.5!! I ordered the Bandeja Paisa - it was a huge portion but the beef was quite dry. The interior is nicely decorated and clean and the lunch deals are pretty worth it!!

El servicio estuvo genial, muy atento el mesero. El ambiente es acogedor y tranquilo. La comida fresca, deliciosa y muy bien presentada. Los baños limpios y tiene música pero es buenísima de escuchar.

Great spot and honestly I like it better than Noches. I believe this is my second time Coming to this spot, first time was with my colleagues for a Christmas dinner but I wasn't active at Yelp. The service was good, food was good, the cassava fries were a little too greasy for my taste but my dad liked it so that's what matters. We ordered salmon with vegetables, delicious! Great ambience, wasn't too crowded and man those arepas with butter won my heart! I love that they have parking spots available, and they did not require any reservation, the wait time wasn't long, we only waited for 10min and that was it. We will definitely be back!

Anyway, came here on a weekday afternoon and wasn't busy at all- that's not to say that the food/bakery wasn't good. It was AMAZING. I got the lunch special which was chicken soup with breaded filet, salad and rice for $12.99. WHAT! And that portion was BIG as you can see from the pictures. Our server was attentive and got us whatever we needed almost right away! My breaded filet came out delicious. Perfect amount of crispy where it's not overdone and it wasn't drenched in any sauce that made the filet soggy. The house salad was simple yet flavorful and that chicken noodle soup was SO hearty that I wanted to go in the kitchen and scoop myself more. The place is big and bright and clean. Bakery on one side of the restaurant for quick take out and restaurant to the right. There's street parking but there's also parking in the back where the giant farmer market is, but it can be a busy lot. I came back here again with my husband another day and had another lunch special which was grilled chicken with mushroom sauce and my husband had a 16oz churrasco, all cooked to perfection. We got some bakery goods to go and we can't wait to have them later. Highly recommend this place!!

They definitely shine even more with a little hot sauce on the side. Easy 8/10. The highlight of the meal was the steak tostones. The steak was juicy and tender, the guacamole added a fresh touch, and the tostones were perfectly crispy. My only complaint is that I wish there had been more on the plate because they disappeared fast. 8.5/10. For my entrée, I had the grilled chicken topped with mushroom sauce. It was good and cooked well, but I felt it could have used a little more seasoning and heat to really make it pop. 7.5/10. Beyond the food, the ambiance was fantastic. The restaurant is beautiful, comfortable, and has a welcoming vibe that makes you want to sit back and enjoy your meal. I'd definitely come back to try more of the menu.

A Concerned Review of Pollos Mario…read more For years, my spouse and I have been loyal customers of Pollos Mario in Hackensack, NJ. We have enjoyed many meals here, from breakfast to lunch and dinner, supporting this establishment through economic ups and downs, a pandemic, and an influx of competition on Main Street. As one of the original Colombian restaurants in Hackensack, we have always hoped for the best for them, but recent experiences have left us concerned. While the food remains fresh and flavorful, Pollos Mario is no longer the only player in the game. With eight Colombian restaurants now within walking distance, the landscape has changed significantly. Recently, we found ourselves paying $32 for breakfast, which feels exorbitant. Reflecting on our past visits, it's evident that the portion sizes have shrunk considerably since pre-pandemic times. The arepa con queso, which used to cover the plate, now barely touches the edges. Both my spouse and I ordered Huevos Revueltos, priced at $13.90 each, which included scrambled eggs, a homemade potato, and corn cake with cheese. My spouse enjoyed a hot chocolate or coffee with their meal, while I was charged separately for my Aguapanela con Limón, a sugarcane lime drink that, upon receiving the bill, we discovered was not included with the breakfast and added an unexpected $5 charge for a tiny glass. This feels disproportionate for what is essentially a simple beverage. I understand that economic uncertainty is impacting many businesses, and restaurants need to find ways to stay afloat. However, the experience cannot come at the cost of customer satisfaction. It's disheartening that we now visit Pollos Mario only once or twice a month, down from two or three times a week. Price increases, smaller portions, and additional charges are not conducive to fostering loyalty among customers. I hope the owners take this feedback into consideration. We all want to see Pollos Mario thrive, but it's important to create an enjoyable experience without pricing customers out.
