We love banh mi sandwiches and decided to try this place because of the reviews. Got there just before they opened at 11am and was the first to order. Three other customers arrived as we ordered. We thought the food must be good if this many people are here as soon as they open. Well it was actually great food. We took it home and enjoyed the beef and one pork banh mi sandwich. So delicious!! This. Place. Slaps. It slaps so hard that Mama W felt it. Heck, even my brother, Simon W, felt it. And to not exclude anyone, let's throw my dad in there too. Baba W felt it and now he's mad... mad that he didn't get some Vietnamese eats from Vietshack. Yes, this place is that good. It's a small spot in a rather unassuming plaza but they deliver big flavor. I've been here multiple times and here are some notes: * 1B - California Spring Rolls (shrimp, avocado, lettuce, mint, basil, and rice noodles served with peanut butter sauce) - $5.75: While I'm a sucker for the classics, the addition of avocado was too intriguing for me to pass up. I love me some avocados and you can definitely find me in the kitchen eating a whole avocado with a spoon at any given time so getting this was a no-brainer. And these spring rolls were good. I said it before and I'll say it forever: spring rolls are one of the most perfect foods. You get your veggie, protein, and some yummy peanut sauce all packaged nicely in an edible wrapper. What's not to love? * 2A - Fried Egg Rolls with Pork (3 pc. for $5.95 or 5 pc. for $7.95): It's a fried egg roll. You know what's up! Wrap it up with your veggies and eat it with fish sauce. Yummers. * 3. Tom Cuon Shack Shrimp (3 pc. for $6.95 or 5pc. for $8.95): It's fried shrimp. I won't be waxing poetry over this basic staple but it was good. It was crunchy and came with a sweet chili sauce. *5B - Salt & Pepper Wings (6 pc. for $11.95): The wings are ridiculously good. They're fresh out of the fryer, ready to burn your lips. Ouch! I know I burned mine but that's how eager I was to eat these wings. *6 - Lotus Root Salad (Shrimp, pork, lotus roots, cucumbers, and carrots. Served with fish sauce and chips) - $11.95: It's deceptive. What appears to be a small salad was a portion that easily fed me for two meals. It was even better the next day once the fish sauce got all soaked up by the shrimp, pork, and lotus roots. *7 - Banh Mi (pickled carrots, green onions, cilantro, jalapeños, Sriracha, and mayo) - $8.45: SZA sings she needs a big boy. Well, come here, SZA. This sandwich is a big boi! There's a lot of meat and a lot of vegetables. While I love me a good banh mi, there's other items here I'd rather have. * 9B - Char Siu Rice Plate with fried rice - $11.95: Now this dish blew my socks off, haha! Get it with the fried rice. It's worth the extra calories, fat, and sodium. Every bite is flavorful. The fresh vegetables will help cut the fattiness and richness while the char siu keeps everything mmmoist! Get the crispy chicken version as an alternative. *10C - Spicy Shrimp Garlic Noodles - $12.95: Between the 10C and 10D, I will say I would rather have 10CD. The garlic noodles weren't any more garlicky than 10D so why not get some more vegetables? The shrimp is delightfully crunchy though with good flavor! * 10D - Shack Fried Noodles (beef, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, and green onions) - $12.95: As a garlic lover, I loved the heck out of this dish. It was like eating beef and broccoli with lo mein but more garlicky and peppery. I'm all for it. Find me in the corner slurping noodles like I'm Uzumaki Naruto. No shame. I'll be honest, this isn't the best Vietnamese food I've ever had. However, if you take the restaurant concept into consideration along with the warm service that makes you feel like family, I would rate Vietshack highly. Although there are some tables and chairs, this is not a large sit down place for big groups. Most people get their orders to go. For sit down, you get served with disposable plates and cutlery. I don't consider this a bad thing considering that Vietshack is meant to be affordable, accessible, and easily managed with their small family-run staff. The value between food portions and pricing is great! My partner and I are always in shock with the sheer amount of food given to us every time we go. As mentioned earlier, I wouldn't say this is the best Vietnamese food you could get, but I also don't think it's bad. It's very accessible and friendly especially if you are new to the cuisine. The man who operates the register, answers the phone for pickup orders, serves the food to sit down customers, and cleans the front of house is a one man army. I often see him running back into the kitchen too to assist. Despite all of his responsibilities, he is so friendly and attentive. The warmth he exudes is so comforting. Anyone would feel welcomed here. If you have never had Vietnamese food and would like to start branching out, Vietshack is a great starting point with how friendly and accessible they are. I love this place! Banh mi's are super yummy, but in my opinion the vegetables could have a more pickled flavor. The fried chicken is to die for! So crunchy and flavorful and they give you lots of fresh veggies to go with it. I also tried their Vietnamese coffee which was delicious and refreshing. The owners are always nice and welcoming too. Dined inside at 4pm on a Saturday. The floors were dirty and most of the tables weren't wiped down. Chairs were not pushed in. We were the only people inside so they weren't busy. My wife got crispy chicken noodles and I got garlic shrimp noodles. The crispy chicken came as a huge piece of deep fried bone-in chicken. She was expecting boneless chunks. The size was enormous but the food came very quick so it wasn't cooked fresh. I got the shrimp. It was battered and deep fried with the tail still on and the legs of the shrimp still part of it. So basically unshelled deep fried shrimp. I didn't enjoy it. The most puzzling part was the noodles. We were the only people inside there and the food came quickly but the noodles were barely above room temperature. Almost like they had microwaved the noodles. They should have been piping hot. Why weren't they? My wife only took a few bites and had enough. The cashier was nice and I thought we would like it since it had 4.8 stars and over 400 reviews but it was very disappointing. Yikes. Out and about, thought we would try a random place. My S.O. Picked this place, I'm glad she did. Nice little cozy place. It's counter service, and they will bring the food to your table if you decide to eat there. The Gentleman at the front was very polite and patient. He answered all our questions and provided us nice suggestions in the kindest way. The food didn't take long to come out, the Vietnamese coffee was STRONG! And we were very happy for it! Everything tasted really good, my fried noodles had 2 pepper slices, so if you wanted it to be spicy, that was an option, if you didn't, I would advise taking it off your plate, because they were spicy lol. Each person who answers the phone is personable and when we pick up food they are always nice as well. Ambiance is pretty straight forward for a takeout spot. It is always clean when I pickup food. I was quite skeptical when I saw that Viet shack has a perfect 5-star rating on yelp - that is *very difficult* for any restaurants to achieve and I saw for myself why they have earned that rating. In my opinion, Viet shack is not just the best Vietnamese cuisine in Tempe/Phoenix, they are one of the best authentic Asian American cuisine in Phoenix, period. Could not believe how fresh and delicious their food is with their unbelievably competitive pricing! I got their spring roll appetizer and while there was a bit more lettuce than what I find at a Viet restaurant, it was still quite delicious. For my entree, I ordered their lemongrass pork vermicelli noodles and it is probably one of the best ones I have had. You could tell they do good business as the pork meat was tender and more on the fresh side of things (whereas I am so used to many places using cheap meats), and both the noodle texture and freshness of the vegetables were spot on. Had I not limited myself to one cuisine type limit on this trip, I would have returned to Viet shack at least once more. Their stir fried noodles and banh mis are very popular here and I plan to try those on my future visits to Phoenix. Strongly recommend this place! read more

This is based on a one-time visit from an out-of-towner. My in-laws moved to AZ about 3 years ago just before the pandemic, but they live in far away Maricopa which has zero authentic food IMO. We drove out from San Francisco for Christmas and I really needed Asian food (preferably w/ rice) STAT. Hub and I weren't in town long and we decided to venture out for the afternoon. I Yelped "Vietnamese food" and this place appeared w/ a full five star rating. This place is located in a shopping plaza not too far from the exit off the 10. It is on the smaller side with a few tables and pretty clean. Hub and I both ordered grilled pork over rice and an order of traditional spring rolls (shrimp and pork), so we didn't have a variety of food to review. The spring rolls were a good size, good in flavor with a decent-tasting peanut sauce on the side. They did not have cilantro in it which I was surprised by, but SUPER happy because I have the gene that makes cilantro "taste like soap" (I hate cilantro, but I would never describe it as tasting like soap). I wanted to try the banh mi, but I really needed some rice in my system, so I got the grilled pork rice plate. Portion size is good. It came with a lot more rice than I'm accustomed to (at least what I'm used to in SF). Needless to say, I did not finish my rice. It also came with lots of cucumber slices (a plus for me) and lettuce. I would have loved a slice of tomato, but not a deal breaker. The flavor of the pork is good and came with a pretty good amount of it (hooray). The gentleman who was working was pleasant, friendly, and checked in on us. Five stars for service. Decent amount of menu options. Overall, four stars for food. Solid food and definitely hit the spot for me. read more

I chose the grilled chicken bun and hubby got the char siu (BBQ pork) banh mi. Everything is cooked to order. The wait was short and our food was brought to the table. The banh mi is huge with char siu, cucumbers, cilantro, pickled carrots, jalapeño and Mayo in a large roll. The roll was toasted and soft on the inside. I love this place!!! This was my go-to takeout place when I lived closer. The pork banh mi is my favorite - so flavorful with the sriracha mayo, and the bread is really good too. The spicy shrimp garlic noodles are also very good, as well as the veggie and shrimp egg rolls. The Vietnamese coffee is one of my favorites that I've had also! There's a unique smoky flavor in the coffee that goes so well with the condensed milk. The location is nothing fancy, but it's clean and welcoming and I've always had good/fast service.
