My husband picked this place for dinner and knowing him I went in with high expectations. I am happy to report that this place surpassed all my expectations from food, service to ambiance. The shrimp and grits were the best I ever had, so warm, comforting, and flavorful. It had a slight spicy kick to it which made it even more delicious. Found Vic's River Grill (VRG) online and we made reservations for 8pm. Probably like many others, we ended up at the sister location, Vic's on the River. Thankfully, Vic's on the River was nice enough to direct us to the right spot. We arrived at VRG about 15 mins early and were told that we would have to wait/come back at our reservation time. There's a little novelty shop with clothing and items that you can peruse right next door. Finally it was our reservation time and we were led into the restaurant. We were told that the building is historic so there have not been many upgrades or changes, but the decor is really nice. The lights are low so this is a good date night spot. For appetizers we ordered the crab cakes and crab beignets. I will tell you that the most amazing thing on the menu are the crab beignets!!!! Ahhhh....they were firm but soft and the filling filled your mouth with amazing goodness!! THEY ARE, WITHOUT A DOUBT, THE BEST THING ON THE MENU! For the entree, Kelly let us know what the specials were. I had the steak with crab on top with a side of mashed potatoes (it comes with asparagus as well but I'm not a fan so I got double mash). The steak was nice, more medium rare than medium, but my daughter's pasta with artichoke hearts was inedible. She has to take the artichokes out of the pasta and place it on the side. The shrimp and grits were great as well. The drinks were okay. Lemon Drop Martini was great! A woman in my group got the Expresso Martini with a side of Bailey's. After receiving it she asked if there was Bailey's in the drink because the drink was dark. She asked twice and it never came so a person in our party had to get up and get the Bailey's because our server forgot to pick it up from the bar. The location of the restaurant just along the water is lovely. We were worried it would be an overpriced tourist trap (and it's not super cheap) but it was certainly worth it. We came here before an event and they were so nice to allow us a party of 9 to come in and order a couple of drinks and appatizers. We ended up almost trying all of their cocktail drinks. I had their Yellowfin Tuna Tartar and it was so good! I honestly finished it in two bites it was so fresh and just amazing! For my cocktail I had their blueberry lemonade cocktail? If you book a reservation on Resy.com, it is for Vic's River Grill, but if you book on OpenTable, it's for Vic's on the River. We went to the wrong place at first and the host was very kind in explaining and getting us sorted out. At Vic's River Grill, had the Fried Green Tomatoes and Blue Crab Beignets. The FGTs come with a lovely tomato chutney and goat cheese on top and then smoked gouda grits undernesth underneath. Definitely my favorite od the evening. The beignets are also worth a try, the parmesan adds a nice touch. Both my wife and I got the half portion salad which was still fairly big. I had salmon on top and choose the green goddess dressing and the salmon was cooked perfectly. She also had a cup of the French onion soup that she had enjoyed. Friendly! Delicious! Welcoming! Friends and I were in town for a festive weekend and we were hungry, as we walked by the smells coming out of VRG's enticed us in. We sat outside so we could people watch and see the river flow by, what perfect weather we had for it. We were taken care of by Mike, he was perfect. Views were amazing!!! You can go outside on the balcony for pics and sunset. They had a live pianist. We got the filet to share and they were kind enough to split it on separate plates in the kitchen for us. Comes with complimentary biscuits. Without any reservations Thursday evening, we were lucky to get a table right away near the bar and close to the live music. The hostess by the the front door informed us that the restaurant is a sister restaurant to the original Vic's Restaurant but had a different flare of southern food and a modern take to craft cocktails. Cocktails hit the spot and average price compared to other restaurants in the area. Savannah bars charge a lot for drinks so don't be shocked. The fried green tomatoes were out of this world. Nicely flavored tomatoes paired well with the smoked gouda grits. It's topped with creamy chevre cheese and balsamic vinegar dressing. The Grilled Salmon Oscar also pared well with blue crab meat, asparagus, and potatoes. The fish was flaky and perfectly cooked. The menu does recommend a wine for each meal and we chose a Malbec. Vic's is an amalgamation of venues, wrapped into one facility. A restaurant, a riverside grill, a coffee shop, a catering/meeting venue. I've had drinks at Vic's on the River and reviewed those separately. A laid back vibe with attentive bartenders. Vic's River Grill appears to have a pared down menu compared to Vic's on the River. I had the fried green tomatoes. Don't ask my why, because it's my husband's passion dish, but even when dining alone, I feel compelled to try them. These were quite good, served with a salty tomato chutney, smoked gouda grits, balsamic, and chèvre. Perfectly breaded. Delish. For my entree I had the filet mignon, which was tender. Wish it had a little more salt and pepper or seasoning, but was good and cooked medium as requested. It came with a loaded mashed potato side and asparagus. Asparagus was perfect. The potatoes seemed a little warmed over like they had sat under a warming light for a while, but the flavors were okay. All my drinks were good. I had a paper plane, Vic's version of an Old Fashioned, and the Strawberry rhuby. The rhuby was light and not too sweet. The other two were smoky, slow sippers. The River Grill also has a few soups (French onion, tomato, she crab), salads (mixed green, wedge, chopped fried chicken, caesar, whipped goats cheese). They have a smash burger as well. Entrees include scallops, the previously mentioned filet, mahi mahi (I saw one next to me and it looked super tasty), catfish, and a fried seafood platter. My service was EXCELLENT. I don't remember her name, but she was a big, beautiful, confident Black QUEEN and she treated me like royalty. So Vic's, whomever matches that description, you let her know she reigns supreme. The tables were bright, white, clean, and plenty of room in between. Some things Vic's on the River serves that the grill doesn't: a few more appetizers and salads, more entrees with a lot more seafood available (oysters, scallops, salmon, flounder, shrimp, fish tacos, shrimp pasta etc). Several more sandwiches aside from a burger (black and blue chicken, short rib, fried green tomato BLT, reuben, po boy). Several more cocktails. But I made this reservation literally minutes before arrival and it was much easier to get than the original vic's. So unless you want something very specific, vic's grill does the job and is a wonderful experience. read more

Michael has to be the best server hands down. He's attentive, makes great recommendations and very invested in our experience. We started off with fried green tomatoes, tomato bisque soup and French onion soup and the fried green tomatoes blew me away. They set the bar very high. The tomato bisque soup was also delicious and the French onion was good but not the best I've had. The strawberry salad was tasty but the dressing needed more flavor. Now onto the entrees. We LOVED the fried green tomatoes-- though there were so many components to the dish they could have fried up and presented almost Anything this way and it would have been awesome-- goat cheese, grits etc. The she crab soup was so so - it wasn't really hot which maybe made me like it less. The catfish and grits entree was great. I skipped the tomato part of it but it was so much food I couldn't have eaten it all anyway. My spouse thoroughly enjoyed the chicken and Brussels sprouts. We shared the key lime pie. It was awesome! The adjoining bar section had live music which we were glad we were in the next room since it seemed way too loud.... But they had piped music in our area which was fine--- except for much of the time it was like competing music that was just annoying since you could hear both at the same time. Visited Vic's River Grill on Christmas Eve. The restaurant is on River Street but you can get there by using the elevator in Vic's on the River from Bay Street level. I'm not sure if there are other elevators to get from Bay St to River St but we took advantage of this elevator several times. The restaurant was busy but service was great. Fun place with a nice atmosphere. We just landed in Savannah and after unloading bags, we were looking for dinner. We walked around and found Vic's. The waiter was nice, knowledgeable and totally engaged with us. The menu had many offerings and specials were plentiful. I like having prices ahead of time with specials or MP on the menu. We ended up with beignets which were fun and shared a crab cake. I had the fried seafood platter which was fine, almost too much food. This spot is located right by the water in Savannah, next to its sister restaurant and sister coffee shop. It has a nice, modern clean look and cute coastal chic decor. The food we ordered was pretty good - our waitress recommended the savory blue crab beignets, which had a really nice blend of flavors (8.5/10). The fried fish sandwich was a 7/10 -- it had ham on it, which was a nice flavor addition to the fish. The fried fish tacos were a 6/10 -- the fish was battered and cooked well but it was a little bland. The service was ok - the drinks and food were both a little slow to come out, but the place was busy with the lunch rush, so that may have been a factor. Stopped in Savannah for one night and wanted some Southern seafood, this place absolutely delivered. They even had a live piano player on a Monday night, which made the atmosphere feel really special. They kept the biscuits coming, and we ordered the shrimp and grits plus the catfish and grits. Both were honestly some of the best we've ever had. Every bite was so flavorful. Our server was friendly and attentive, and we found ourselves telling them multiple times how much we loved the food. We came here for an engagement party. There were 2 families; 14 people in all and Vic's was a great choice since we really didn't know much about Savannah. (The only problem was the restaurant next door is Vic's on the River; so luckily everybody showed up at the right place and the surprise wasn't ruined.). We sat at a long table, (actually several small tables put together,) upstairs. There was a view of the river for folks at the end. We tried opening the balcony door but it was really cold and windy! We had a server approach us for drinks within minutes of being seated; even though our party was only 1/2 there. They had a full liquor bar and everyone was able to get what they wanted from beer to Aperol Spritzes. We ordered some fried green tomato appetizers and they were fantastic! They had a balsamic glaze and were served over Gruyère grits.I didn't get everybody's order but 2 of us just had the wedge salad, which was really good, and the French onion soup which was the best ever! My mother-in-law had the strawberry goat cheese salad with an added crab cake on top. She thought the salad was good, but the crab cake was slightly burned. My husband had the shrimp and grits. He said it was very good. Overall we had a very nice evening. The food, service, and atmosphere were delightful!
