Poorly sutured abdominal incision that the clinic did not even resuture after charging $7000
    K S.

    1. The staff is very accommodating to owners who wish to participate or be near their animals during procedures. The clinic is very clean and polite. For that I would give 5 stars. The staff is VERY YOUNG (at least when I was there.) and maybe a tad inexperienced with some aspects of veterinary. However, I arrived at Veg early in the middle of night/Sunday morning for an emergency c-section due to dystocia. The staff took us in right away and for that I am grateful. My girl was given an ultrasound, to which there were 3 heartbeats (3 live puppies). The staff had to set up the surgical room, so they put us in a very comfortable private room with a leatherette sofa bed, complete with blankets and pillows! It was very clean/quiet/comfortable. When the surgical room was almost complete, the staff had us go to the surgical prep area for intubation and anesthesia. The techs that were doing the intubation grabbed a size 6 intubation tube for a 5 lb dog. I suggested they try a smaller tube as I could tell that was way too big. They ignored me, injected my dog and attempted to intubate her UNSUCCESSFULLY until she woke up. This happened THREE times before they got it right. I had at first suggested trying a size 4 but they rolled their eyes at me before finally getting her intubated with a size 4 tube! Great! Off to surgery. Staff allowed me to resuscitate the pups outside of surgery- albeit charged me $500 for doing so! As a professional breeder of over 20 years I have many times witnessed techs not know what to do or not know how to properly resuscitate toy breed pups, so I do like to be a part of this. I recussitated the first pup, then the 2nd.....then I waited for the 3rd. I had to ask- "Where is the 3rd pup?". One of the techs told me, "It died".... Knowing that this happens occasionally, I asked, "What happened?". She responded, "It was DEFORMED!". So I said, "Bring the puppy out. I need to see it. I keep records of all of this." SO, they brought out the puppy to me. It was still in the sack!!-UNOPENED!!! It was covered in green slime. THIS IS NORMAL even though some folks are taught it means a dead puppy. GREEN DOES NOT MEAN DEAD! I opened the sack and found a PERFECTLY formed puppy with absolutely NO DEFORMITIES. It was cold and unable to be revived. I was sad and shocked! I left after momma and pups had recovered post op with a $7000 bill. Yes, you read that right... SEVEN THOUSAND! (I have typically paid between $600-2000 for c-sections) Next day- only a few hours post surgery- Mother dogs incision was completely split open. NO- she did not rip her stitches, neither did the puppies. It popped open when she stood up. I saw when it happened. I immediately called VEG to tell them that the stitches burst and their response was-"You should just go to your own vet because it will me more cost effective!". After paying $7000 and only being home about 10 hours, they didnt even guarantee their stitches or glue that they used! So, off I went to my vet who ordered the vet report from VEG. They sent it along with a conversation from their vet to mine telling them that "They didnt do anything wrong"...(nobody said that they did).....and in the report noted that they had given my 5 lb dog FENTANYL. My vet told me that 1. the vet claiming she did nothing wrong was just a weird conversation and 2. The use of fentanyl was something they had never heard of doing in veterinary care. Picture attached to review is of dog before going to my vet for repair. Upon inspection by my vet, the entire abdomen split open with just the touch of a finger and immediate surgery was needed to resuture. In the end, my dog was fine. But I would never return to this clinic ever again due to such inexperience.

    Our Baby Boy. RIP

R-I-P To Our Awesome D-O-G As V-E-G Vegges On the J-O-B! Our Pup NEEDLESSLY Suffered In Front of Our Eyes Last Evening in the Emergency Room Before He Took His Gasps of Air and went to Doggie Heaven. He was almost 17-years-old and suffered from congestive heart failure. I had taken him into the same VEG Camelback location the week prior knowing his health was rapidly declining and that euthanasia was a high and likely probability. Fortunately, the veterinarians were able to help our boy breathe more easily and efficiently, despite the fact that he had to be treated for significant water retention in his lungs due to his condition. I was able to bring him home to my wife, who had to work, with the understanding that he probably only had three-to-six months to live. We were fine with that including footing the very large bill. In the end, we felt like we bought more time with our elderly pup and the hefty price was worth it. My wife and I still feel this way despite VEG's great failure last night that now leaves us devastated. Unfortunately, our dog's ability to overcome the water accumulation in his lungs was not sustainable. We drove back to VEG fulling knowing that our precious pup should probably be euthanized. We waited in the room with our boy for the vet for quite a long while. During that time, his condition got worse to the point that he appeared to have died in my wife's arms. I raced out to the room and yelled that my dog just died. It was only then that the veterinarian and another staff member rushed into the room. My wife decided my baby boy had suffered long enough and it was time for us to say goodbye. We are not upset with the final outcome as we had already come to terms with the decision. But the needless suffering our dog had to endure leading up to his death while we patiently waited for the vet was beyond ridiculous. We were told that the veterinarian had another pet in a critical state she had been attending to. This was the reason that she was not able to get to our pup sooner. We can certainly understand and appreciate the difficulties of these circumstances. At the same time, the emergency room was well aware of our dog's condition, ESPECIALLY the vet who had initially treated him the week prior. We are NOT singling out that veterinarian or the vet who eventually euthanized our pup. There is enough blame to be spread around for the entire facility. To be placed in the room and have ABSOLUTELY NO ONE check on our dog's condition is unacceptable and a dismal failure. To be fair and objective, we felt this vet emergency room was top notch during our initial visit. We told the front desk our dog collapsed and the staff rushed us in with a sense of urgency and without hesitation. In fact, our impression was that this is way better service than one experiences at hospitals for humans. Unfortunately, that opinion dramatically changed for the worse last evening. It's really difficult to express our frustrations without lashing out in anger as I did last night when VEG failed us. But hopefully pet owners who read this post can absorb this information objectively to determine whether they should bring their pet here or somewhere else. Photos of our Baby Boy at VEG are posted here from last week. He is greatly missed. Btw, lame form letter type response from VEG below. It's a response without really responding to the specific criticisms. It screams, "say something generic and don't say too much so we don't get sued!" These are empty words. You were better off not responding to this post. This is sooooooo weak!!

As a vet tech with over 15 years in the field, including a short stint in emergency medicine; I've seen a lot, and I can honestly say I've never had an emergency vet visit go as smoothly and compassionately as this one. From the very first phone call, Shannon was so helpful and kind. Just the call set the tone for the whole visit and I didn't doubt heading down to VEG. Once we arrived, the immediate care and communication were outstanding. One of the things that sets VEG apart is that you get to stay with your pet the entire time. That level of transparency and comfort is just unheard of in emergency settings. As a veterinary professional, I'd always been curious how VEG handled this kind of care, and they've truly struck a thoughtful balance between transparency and giving you the privacy and support you need in those tough moments with a sick pet. Sally, our tech, was fantastic; very kind, patient, and knowledgeable. She explained everything thoroughly and made sure we felt supported every step of the way. Dr. Beckwith was fantastic as well--professional, clear, and compassionate. From start to finish, the experience was genuinely exceptional. Did we have to wait a bit because more urgent cases came in? Yes. Did we have to spend some money because it's emergency medicine? Of course. But those things are expected and even with the stress of the situation, VEG made the whole experience far more positive and supportive than any emergency visit I've had before. They really know how to care for both pets and people. Hopefully we won't have to make another emergency visit anytime soon, but if we do, we won't even hesitate about where to go. VEG truly raised the bar. Thank you, VEG Phoenix team!

We took our pup here on Sunday out of fear he may have parvo (he doesn't). When they put us in a room they made me hold him in my lap and not let him down. While I know this may be a precaution and he only ways 27 pounds it was a bit much and my legs fell asleep. Then I struggled to stand and walk him to the exam table when the tech finally came back. The other clinic asked us to carry him to the room and had us wear booties. Given the severity of the disease I understood. Additionally, the vet tech really freaked me out and said that he was not protected for Parvo by the Tractor supply vaccines. The way she presented it created fear. However, the veterinarian was more calming in her explanation. It was very pricey but given it was Sunday, I couldn't complain.

As a lot of you said you hope to never have you and your pet here. I recently spent 16 hours there when my dog had seizures, he unfortunately was not responding to medication and I made the choice to euthanize him. It was his time and he lived a long and wonderful life. During the 16 hours I was there, each person was extremely kind to me and my dog. Each choice I had to make was never forced and was given a gracious amount of time to decide. As I sat there, I watched them care for several animals in need and each of these animals were in good hands. I appreciate everything they did for us and the time I was allowed to mourn and be alone with my dog one last time.

Ask the Community - Veterinary Emergency Group

I would like to bring my cat in for a spay or neuter. So I would like to ask if I need to make an appointment and if I do, how do I make an appointment?

This is basically an emergency department for your pet. Not a spay/neuter clinic lol.

Is this an affordable vet? I have to bring my boy in for an X-ray but I can't afford to go into dept and he has what looks like a fatty lump on his belly .. I've been reaching out to rescues if I can possibly a price estimate? Or id have to surrender

they do have financing options. I recently took my pup there, and it was a pretty hefty bill, but I was able to get it taken care of with a few options that they gave me. Definitely recommend.

We had a virtual urgent care call and they were concerned enough that we brought him into The Scottsdale Veterinary Clinic to check in on him. After an ultrasound, they found that he had a mass on his spleen and was internally bleeding, and had to go into immediate overnight emergency surgery. The surgery was successful, and after a 36 hour hospital stay, Barkley is back home and on the mend. While this was such a scary experience and few days, I have nothing but wonderful things to say about The Scottsdale Veterinary Clinic and their team. They are open 24/7/365, and provided around the clock care. Because of the length of his stay, we worked with and spoke to multiple of their veterinarians and assistants (thank you to Dr. Ferguson, Dr. Fleming, Dr. Goldberg, and Dr. Blackmon), and everyone was so kind, attentive, and caring through every step of the process, gave us calls throughout the night with updates and over the past few days to check in on Barkley's progress, and were so compassionate in all of the care they provided. Dr. Starks was thorough in explaining what could be happening with our dog, Thor, and clearly outlined her plan of action. I appreciated how she took the time to make sure we understood everything before proceeding. The facility itself is large and well-equipped to accommodate several large-breed dogs. Because Thor was possibly dealing with kennel cough, we were asked to wait in our vehicle for safety, which we understood. Before the examination, I completed the necessary paperwork inside the lobby, where they provided fresh cold water bottles and a coffee machine for pet parents -- a thoughtful touch for those waiting for their precious pets. The staff and assistants, all female during our visit, were professional, gentle, and very attentive during Thor's exam. Poor Thor was uneasy at first with all the touching and the new environment, as he's mainly used to home and daycare, but the staff helped calm him and made him feel more comfortable. I've already recommended this facility to my favorite niece, who has two German Shepherds. The exam cost was very reasonable -- under $200, not including optional services such as X-rays, which Dr. Starks clearly explained upfront. We are truly grateful for the care and compassion shown to our handsome large Lab mix, Thor. What an A+ urgent vet care experience…read more I found the spot through reading reviews here on Yelp. Unfortunately, my late, sweet angel of a Bichon Frise has recently passed, however it was extremely helpful to have brought her here to this facility to understand more in depth the severity of her medical issue. Not only is the staff here so friendly and empathetic, they are also punctual, efficient and very honest. My dog sitter ended up taking my dog here one night while we were out of town to deal with her chronic vomiting. The vet caring for her that evening spoke with me directly over the phone to go over treatment options. I thoroughly appreciated her honesty. I ended up having to take my dog back here one night a few weeks later due to the vomiting starting up again and her primary vet also suggested what she's going through needs to be handled at an actual animal hospital. This second visit was just as efficient and also they were kind enough to waive certain fees due to us returning back to them in such a short amount of time. I also like the fact that we're able to use payment plan options via Affirm. That was extremely helpful for me during this previous emotionally tumultuous season. Overall, great urgent animal care location. I highly recommend them.

He'd had a full check up within weeks and actually was at VEG about a month before for an unrelated GI issue. We had unfortunately been to several other emergency vets before making it to VEG, as we were out and about when the crisis started. I also had my little pug with me as getting care for my Great Dane was a bigger priority than taking her home. Once again the staff at VEG surrounded us with compassionate care. Nothing could have changed the outcome of the day but I am so grateful that at every moment the VEG staff was working to save my dog and caring so much for all of our comfort. They immediately got several large beds and a blanket for him to lie down and offered me a cushion. They handled him with love and checked on us in so many ways. And they tried. At one point we had something like 6 people working to stabilize him and everyone was focused and on task. I felt they worked on him not like a job but as if he was their own. I know its hard to work on a holiday and I know his death was emotional for everyone. But thank you all because at least I was with him to the very end and he knew he was being cared for. Being able to be with your dog throughout care is such a meaningful difference in the veterinary industry and in both owners and pets experience with vet care, and I feel like VEG always has such caring people. Thank you, though honestly have to say I'm hoping to see you all less in 2026.

Unfortunately, my soul dog Ernie did not come back home with me, however Dr. Jared Brethouwer and staff answered all of my questions, patiently responded to my scenario-based questions, my what-ifs, my repeated questions to make sure I was understanding fully what was happening to my dog and his prognosis. They waited for my children and husband to drive to the hospital to say goodbye and allowed us as much time as we needed while keeping Ernie comfortable. They were a wonderful ally thru this excruciating process. Even though the outcome was heartbreaking, I felt that Ernie and I were in the best care, with compassionate professionals, and I am very thankful for their expertise in our time of despair. Thank you for your kindness and guidance, Erin

-- Our experience with BluePearl: Please read before choosing an internist…read more I don't often write reviews, but I feel a responsibility to share what happened with my dog, Dresden, in hopes of helping other pet parents avoid the confusion, cost, and heartbreak we went through. We brought Dresden to BluePearl because we were concerned he might have Cushing's disease. We were prepared for diagnostics, answers, and a clear treatment plan. Instead, after 2 visits, thousands of dollars, and a long list of tests, we left with less clarity than when we started. Despite our concerns about Cushing's, Dresden was never actually tested for it. Dr. Ford told us she didn't think he had Cushing's--and even if he did, she likely wouldn't treat it. That was extremely confusing for us as owners trying to identify the cause of his symptoms and advocate for our dog's health. Over time, Dresden's symptoms worsened. Eventually, he ended up in the emergency hospital after what was likely a vascular event triggered by untreated Cushing's. Heartbroken and desperate for answers, we took him to Salt River--where he was finally tested, and officially diagnosed with Cushing's disease. I understand that medicine isn't always straightforward, and no internist can predict everything--but what we needed was someone who listened, took our concerns seriously, and followed through with appropriate diagnostics. We didn't get that from Dr Sara Ford at BluePearl. In fact, we were poorly treated, misinformed and made to feel we were bothering her for following up for direction when his condition worsened. If you are seeking an internist who will be thorough, proactive, and aligned with you in getting to the root of your pet's issues, I urge you to look elsewhere. You deserve a team that takes your concerns seriously and doesn't leave you with more questions than answers. We wish we had gone to Salt River from the start. It could have saved Dresden pain and us thousands of dollars months of stress, fear, and unnecessary expense.
