I recently had to say goodbye to my beloved guinea pig Chai at VEG Newton, and I cannot express enough gratitude for their extraordinary compassion. From the moment we walked in, the staff treated my small pet with the same respect and dignity they would show any larger animal - something that meant the world to me. The team thoroughly understood that the size of a pet doesn't determine how much we love them. There was no judgment, only genuine empathy and support during this difficult decision. Their open floor plan meant I could stay with my little one throughout the process, and they explained everything clearly and gently. I have never had to do anything like this but felt in good hands. What sets VEG apart is how they truly put both people and pets first. They took time to understand our situation, never rushed us, and created a peaceful, caring environment for our final moments together. For anyone facing the difficult loss of any pet - whether it's a dog, cat, or small animal like my guinea pig - you'll find nothing but understanding and professional care here. Thank you, VEG, for making an impossibly hard day a little bit easier, we noticed the heart you added when you wrote her name on the box.

As we come upon the one-month anniversary of the realization of my worst nightmare, I feel compelled to share my utmost gratitude to and amazement of the amazing staff at VEG Newton. In the late evening hours of 08/02, I carried my sweet, vivacious, high-energy Ruby girl into your facility in extremis. The team jumped into action before I had even fully laid her on the exam table and begin relaying the information I had. A working diagnosis was swiftly identified, and subsequently confirmed to be acute hemoabdomen likely related to a ruptured splenic mass. The team set about working fervently to stabilize my precious girl in the hopes of getting her into the OR to address both the mass and the bleeders. Throughout this delicate dance, every member of the team did their part to keep me fully updated on this ever-evolving situation. I assume this was slightly more difficult than usual given my background as a peds critical care RN and subsequent deeper questions about almost everything. It soon became evident that despite everyone's best efforts, Ruby was not likely to survive her situation. I will never forget the face of the head veterinarian who gently told me, "humane euthanasia is an option in this situation", but I will forever kick myself for not making a point to know her name. Her words knocked the wind out of me, they opened the box that contained my worst fears that I had been desperately trying to keep shut... but I knew they were true. Knowing further resuscitation efforts would likely prove futile, the decision was made to stop efforts to stabilize Ruby and instead we shifted our energy toward prioritizing her comfort. This decision, one of the hardest most gut-wrenching decisions I've ever made, felt right, almost natural, thanks to the information from and conversation with this veterinarian whose name I wish I could remember. The team at VEG Newton was as incredible in facilitating Ruby's end of life as they had been in the fight to resuscitate and stabilize her. They seamlessly transitioned us into a quiet space that allowed me time and privacy to love on my sweet girl and say my final goodbyes in private. Given that I was a slobbery, snotty mess- I really appreciated this privacy. In this private room was an unassuming bell, ready to be pressed when needed, that would summon the veterinarian- just one person- who would help Ruby cross the Rainbow Bridge when we were ready. We never once felt rushed, pressured, nothing like that. I loved on my girl, telling her how much I loved her and thanking her for being my ride or die for all those years- I apologized over and over for not being able to save her and I promised I would never forget her for as long as I lived. I could feel her growing more tachypneic and was concerned that was a sign of discomfort, so I rang the bell. The veterinarian- the one whose name I wish I could remember- materialized and asked if I was ready. I said, between sobs, that I was as ready as I could ever be. We had discussed the drug cocktail previously so I knew what she was holding in her hand, and I knew this was it. I laid my head on Ruby's chest, as I had so many times in our normal life, and I listened to her heart. Felt her breathe. I felt her respiratory rate slow, and eventually I heard her heart slow to a stop. I waited for the veterinarian to listen, to officially declare it, but I knew. My sweet Ruby, my OG ride or die... she was gone. Sometime after 0100 on 08/03, my Ruby left this earth. I can only hope, pray, that the Rainbow Bridge is real, and that I will see my sweet girl again someday. While the veterinarian's face is the one that plays on in my dreams, and sometimes my nightmares, I want the entire VEG Newton crew working that night to know that I see you, you matter, and I am so grateful for you all. You took my girl and treated her as if she were your own- that care was palpable. I cannot thank guys you enough for the incredible care you gave Ruby, for fighting for her when she was too weak to fight for herself, for the compassion and expertise you all possess and share with your patients. Your work is so important and your efforts are so appreciated. I know it's a thankless job, so please just take this one and remember it, especially when times get tough. -Mandey and Pearl (Ruby's mom and sister)

Definitely don't bring your small animals here they don't know how to help/care for them. Either take them to a small animal specialist or anywhere else but here. I literally heard some of the vets say "I'm not a hamster person " I'm so glad I decided to leave before things could have ended bad.

I came in and was brought back right away. I was triaged right away and felt the team there did a good job letting me know my wait time, diagnosis and results came in and options for treatment and payment (and payment plans if needed). While waiting, you're in the back where they're doing the treatment for your pet and others. Everything looked clean, clean and organized, and I immediately felt I had brought Buddy to the right place for his care. Buddy ended up needing to spend the night for monitoring and I felt informed and assured he was in the best care. When he was discharged the vet and Vet techs made sure I had Buddy's necessary medications and answered all my questions before I left. I felt I went home with all my questions answered and clear instructions on what to do next each time I've called with questions. I've gotten answers fairly quick no matter what time of day it was. I hope I don't need to go back to the emergency room, but if I do, I wouldn't hesitate to come back here.

They helped diagnose my beloved cat Achilles with a shockingly advanced cancer. It took multiple tests and procedures in under 24-hours, and they had to deliver a result no one wants to hear. Throughout the process the staff treated me and my cat with such care and dignity. After the initial x-rays, the head vet took the time to acknowledge how painful and shocking it was. Every member of their staff was so genuine. One of the nurses told me she loved that my cat had a mix of black and pink toe pads. Another shared stories of the puppy who would be the last overnight neighbor my cat had. When we went to say goodbye to Achilles, he had a pink paint mark on his forehead that another staff member explained was lipstick from an overnight nurse who kisses all her patients. Our euthanasia nurse made him a plate of cheese, mousse pate, and little crunch treats before he had to go. I am so glad he was so loved in his last hours. Was it expensive, yes. There's a wider conversation here about prices that staff don't set themselves, and pet care in America. But for anyone in dire straits with a pet that needs help, no one here judged me. If he had recovered, I think they would have been cheering right alongside me.

Due to what I believe was serious negligence in this hospital's postoperative care, I lost my beloved four-year-old French Bulldog. The experience was devastating, and the lack of accountability and professionalism that followed only compounded the heartbreak. Nothing will ever undo the loss of my best friend, but I hope sharing my experience helps prevent another family from enduring the same pain. Since this happened, I have spoken with several other pet owners who have described strikingly similar experiences. Hearing these accounts has raised serious concerns for me about whether this reflects a broader issue that deserves further scrutiny. I am currently pursuing legal action regarding Beau's death and believe these concerns deserve to be taken seriously. Please do your research, ask questions, and carefully consider all your options before entrusting this hospital with your pet's care.

I'm glad there's an emergency vet in the North Shore now, as heading to Woburn during critical times in the past was always a little bit more of a hike than anticipated. I paid $1,371 for her care, and this level of service is completely unacceptable. My dog has not been eating regularly for six days, and I came to an emergency veterinary clinic expecting her condition to be taken seriously. Instead, her blood was drawn, and I was left waiting for another couple of hours with no meaningful update on her condition or when she would be seen. I understand that emergency clinics can be busy and that patients must be prioritized based on the severity of their conditions. However, leaving someone waiting for hours without clear communication, especially when their pet has been experiencing ongoing symptoms for six days, is incredibly frustrating and concerning. I expected compassion, professionalism, and timely communication from an emergency veterinary clinic. Instead, I feel as though my dog's well-being and my concerns are being disregarded. Paying $1,371 for treatment should come with a reasonable level of communication and care. I'm trying to find the right words to adequately praise Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital…read more(MVRH), its staff, and Dr. Kelly Larabee, an Emergency Physician whose compassion and professionalism made an extraordinarily difficult day more bearable. While traveling from northern New Hampshire to Boston, we stopped in Woburn and discovered that one of our very elderly dogs could no longer get out of the car on her own. When she finally did, her rear legs collapsed beneath her. In addition to the weakness in her hind legs, she was breathing rapidly and drooling excessively. As a longtime dog owner, I recognized the look in her eyes immediately--the look that says, "It's time." Fortunately, we were less than a mile from Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital, a Level 1, 24-hour emergency and specialty veterinary hospital. We arrived without an appointment and were met by a team that was immediately welcoming, compassionate, and remarkably efficient. It was clear from the moment we walked through the door that MVRH has built a system of care designed to deliver expert treatment with both urgency and empathy. Our dog was promptly brought into the treatment area and made comfortable. Shortly thereafter, we met Dr. Kelly Larabee, whose kindness, professionalism, and genuine concern were evident from our first conversation. Dr. Larabee confirmed what we had feared but already suspected--that the time had come for our beloved companion to cross the rainbow bridge peacefully. Dr. Larabee and her team brought an extraordinary degree of humanity to veterinary emergency medicine. They treated our dog with dignity, tenderness, and respect, as though she were a member of their own family. During one of the most difficult moments a pet owner can experience, they provided not only exceptional medical care but also comfort and compassion for us. I am not sure the average pet owner--or member of the public--fully appreciates the expertise, systems of care, and operational excellence that make an institution like Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital function so effectively. Having spent much of my career in process engineering, I was deeply impressed by both the efficiency of their operations and the quality of care they delivered. Every aspect of our experience reflected a well-designed system staffed by highly skilled professionals who never lost sight of the human and emotional side of their work. Dr. Larabee and the entire MVRH team were as compassionate as they were capable, and as caring as they were efficient. Their professionalism and humanity turned a heartbreaking day into one marked by dignity, peace, and gratitude. We would all be fortunate to receive the same standard of care in human medicine.
