We love perfect Paws! I reached out to Janie about over a month ago about training our 1 year old golden retriever Bow. He needed obedience training and had issues jumping and pulling on the leash. I am so happy we found her. She has been working with bow for the month of February and I have seen such a change in my dog. He loves to go to doggy daycare and train and play. He come home exhausted after playing with his friends. He is doing so much better listening, staying, and sitting. He no longer jumps on me when I bring him on walks. I learned about Perfect Paws from a neighbor who raved about sending their dog to boarding - something I always dread, so it caught my attention! This friend shared that their pup returns home better behaved than when they leave him, since Perfect Paws offers training, in addition to boarding. We recently added a new dog to our family and have been working with Janie on training the new puppy, and getting pointers on helping our older dog accept her new companion. Janie is extremely knowledgable and has helped us address issues via a variety of creative approaches. She understands the personalities/motivations of our dogs and caters to their individual strengths and challenges. Janie is excellent at teaching dog training. She clearly explains a target goal based on our unique needs, demonstrates how to communicate it to the dogs, observes technique, and then gently corrects and makes suggestions for greater success for both me and ultimately my dogs. Our individual training with her has made for a much more harmonious first year with our boisterous and energetic new dog. We have also recently enrolled our dog in play group two afternoons a week, and it has been a real game changer in terms of having more time to get my work done and having a tired, fulfilled and happy pup to come home to. We really love Perfect Paws! Our Cavalier King Charles Addie has been going for small dog daycare and boarding since we moved to Newton 3 years ago. Janie and her team treat her like family and Addie is always excited when they arrive to pick her up. Janie is always available for advice and gives me tips and even has helped me find other services for Addie. When Addie was boarding while on a medicine which was a little tough for her tummy Perfect Paws even made chicken and rice for her everyday. Katie at Perfect Paws did more than just teach an old dog new tricks! After rescuing an incredible older dog who seemed well trained, but didn't seem to respond anything I did, Katie rescued me! She took us back to the basics and got me and the dog on the same page. After 3 sessions of discovering the differences in two owners interacting with the dog and what worked for the dog, we've now been able to expand upon it and she just keeps on eagerly learning more. My girlfriend and I recently adopted a 5 year old dog and were struggling to fix his leash behavior (pulling and barking at other dogs). We did a session with Janie where she gave recommendations on the type of harness to use to get the most out of each walk with our dog as well as explaining the methods we should be using to help curb these behaviors. She was very good at breaking down why we should be doing each motion in terms of how the dog is thinking. By then end of the first hour our dog had seen marked improvement and we left with the set of skills to keep him improving. Additionally, she was very polite and professional and you can tell she really cares about the wellbeing of dogs. We didn't do the daycare only the hour training session but we met at the facility they use for the daycare and it was very clean and well-constructed. I would definitely recommend a session with Janie and now were looking into the daycare sessions as well. read more

Just enrolled my dog in daycare at Perfect Paws. Janie is great, I met her and the outdoor doggy daycare staff for 30 minutes during a Meet and Greet. They do all sorts of training with the dogs while they are there, as well as divide them up by size and/or temperament. Also, if you live in Newton they pick your furry friend up for free, which is super helpful while I am gone at work. We were struggling with our 11 mos cocker spaniel with constant barking when anyone entered the house as well as his fear of people in general. Such a kind and loving place for our dog. Janie, the owner, is very careful and diligent in screening, selecting and training staff. And the human:dog ratio is kept at a reasonable level. Plus small dogs and big dogs have separate areas. In addition, PP is very good at arranging boarding either at our home, or at an employee's home, when we need it for short or extended periods. I did not have the opportunity to get to know Perfect Paws. I am impressed by the reviews and see smiling dog faces in the pictures. We were blown away by the hoops we were asked to go through before even getting there. I completed the application form and sent all medical records within one hour. I was told to place both documents in the same email. We did this 3-4 times upon repeated request (not understanding why we were being asked the same thing over and over). I was told "there are several emails from you, can you just do it again and send them both again (repeatedly). Done (again??). Then Janie said "Can you merge your vets medical files and our application form in one document for me ..then we will be all set." I said "You want me to merge two PDF files for you?" "Yes." she said and continued "I can only upload one document at a time and need all of your information in one place so need you to merge your vets medical documents with our application form" ...isn't this something one's BUSINESS should do? I explained that would require either a scanner and app to save all scanned docs electronically in one file which I did not have, or adobe acrobat which I did not have. She stated "I"m sorry you're having trouble. Just do this one thing and we'll be all set." I thought I must not be understanding ..or it must be a joke or a show like PUNKED by Ashton Kutcher. A business would never ask such a thing from a customer ..I had to be mistaken! Sigh. The vibe of course was ..any business who would expect a customer to go so far for their own bookkeeping...doesn't care so much about the customer. Was all of that for real? read more

Our dog Luna has been doing to Perfect Paws since a few weeks after we adopted her almost a year ago. She loves going to Perfect Paws. It's the only activity that involves being separated from us where she gladly runs out the door! Even if we're home during pick-up and she's usually very attached to us. The fact that they pick-up at the house is SO convenient; it allows me to bike to work for exercise when I go into the office, since I don't need to drop her somewhere like most day cares. I think the 2x per week small group socialization and training with Perfect Paws has played a big role in Luna's blossoming into a very well-rounded lady. We do put in a lot of work too, multiple formal obedience classes, so it's not an out for training your dog! But when we first got her, it would take her a while to read other dogs (if and how they want to play) and she's so good at her interactions with dogs of all personalities now. I really think the experience and consistency of her Perfect Paws has been phenomenal for her development! They post pictures on Facebook if you go look for them - sometimes I wish more were posted - but that's OK. I just miss my Luna when I have to go to the office. :) read more

I had a very good experience with one-on-one training for my now 5 month old puppy. Training was with Katie and took place at my house. Katie was very nice and very knowledgable about dogs and dog training. She was able to suggest many helpful products/treats etc. I also appreciated that Katie respected how I wanted to approach training. Some things we worked on in training were: potty training, leash walking, sit, stay, come, paw, lay down. My dog hadn't had any other type of training so he really needed to learn the basics. We had 5 training sessions over 6 weeks and I definitely saw improvements in his behavior. Had I taken more time to practice commands with him throughout the week, I think I would have seen even more improvements! It's definitely true that your dog will only get out as much as you're willing to give during training. I am glad we used Perfect Paws and started with this individual training. I plan to see how his behaviors evolve and to continue to use the skills I learned to train him on my own. At some point, I may want to do more training if he is still struggling with any of the tougher aspects of training (i.e. barking). I may want to do group-training for more socialization for him and with the added aspect of distractions from other dogs being helpful in terms of training. If Perfect Paws offers group training, I will definitely continue with them! read more
