On Saturday evening I brought in my shih tuz dog with a very severe eye injury. From the moment I entered the door I was greeted by a wonderful staff from the receptionist to the Veterinarian. They were all wonderfully supportive and caring. The doctor treated her with a highly aggressive course of action which actually saved her eye. I was kept informed of every step they were taking and why it was being done. I was impressed with the care and treatment and strongly recommend VEG to anyone in need of emergency care. We were referred for a follow up at the Eye Center across the way and the specialist there was very impressed with the course of action taken and how well Rosie was doing. I've taken two cats to VEG in the past 3 years and have had consistently positive experiences. I love that you can speak to a vet before you come in and that you can stay with your pet the whole time. Staff are kind and compassionate. I also really appreciate that they offer free snacks and beverages. They have a basket of coloring books for kids and feminine hygiene supplies in the bathroom. It feels like they took a thoughtful approach to providing things to make the visit a little easier, knowing that urgent care visits are often sudden and stressful. A few weeks ago, I was already driving my male Akita to VEG Newton because he had thrown up blood. I was panicked, scared, and trying to get there as fast as I could. What I didn't expect was for things to get even worse. Somehow, while I was driving on the highway, he managed to roll the window down himself and jumped out. Yes. My dog jumped out of a moving car on the highway. I pulled over immediately, heart racing, shaking, terrified I was about to lose him. He limped toward me from the fast lane as cars slowed down. I scooped him up and rushed him the rest of the way to VEG. There are no words strong enough to explain how much my dogs mean to me. After losing my fiancé in the most tragic way in 2024, my dogs became the only reason I kept going. They're not pets -- they are my heart. When I walked into VEG, I was a complete mess. My dog was bleeding from his leg and already sick from whatever was going on internally. The team didn't hesitate. They didn't waste time. They brought us in right away. They were calm, focused, and kind. They made sure he was stable, gave me the information I needed, and reassured me when I could barely catch my breath. They treated my dog with gentle hands and treated me like a person who mattered, not just another case walking through their door. As we come upon the one-month anniversary of the realization of my worst nightmare, I feel compelled to share my utmost gratitude to and amazement of the amazing staff at VEG Newton. In the late evening hours of 08/02, I carried my sweet, vivacious, high-energy Ruby girl into your facility in extremis. The team jumped into action before I had even fully laid her on the exam table and begin relaying the information I had. A working diagnosis was swiftly identified, and subsequently confirmed to be acute hemoabdomen likely related to a ruptured splenic mass. The team set about working fervently to stabilize my precious girl in the hopes of getting her into the OR to address both the mass and the bleeders. Throughout this delicate dance, every member of the team did their part to keep me fully updated on this ever-evolving situation. I assume this was slightly more difficult than usual given my background as a peds critical care RN and subsequent deeper questions about almost everything. It soon became evident that despite everyone's best efforts, Ruby was not likely to survive her situation. I will never forget the face of the head veterinarian who gently told me, "humane euthanasia is an option in this situation", but I will forever kick myself for not making a point to know her name. Her words knocked the wind out of me, they opened the box that contained my worst fears that I had been desperately trying to keep shut... but I knew they were true. Knowing further resuscitation efforts would likely prove futile, the decision was made to stop efforts to stabilize Ruby and instead we shifted our energy toward prioritizing her comfort. This decision, one of the hardest most gut-wrenching decisions I've ever made, felt right, almost natural, thanks to the information from and conversation with this veterinarian whose name I wish I could remember. The team at VEG Newton was as incredible in facilitating Ruby's end of life as they had been in the fight to resuscitate and stabilize her. They seamlessly transitioned us into a quiet space that allowed me time and privacy to love on my sweet girl and say my final goodbyes in private. Given that I was a slobbery, snotty mess- I really appreciated this privacy. In this private room was an unassuming bell, ready to be pressed when needed, that would summon the veterinarian- just one person- who would help Ruby cross the Rainbow Bridge when we were ready. We never once felt rushed, pressured, nothing like that. I loved on my girl, telling her how much I loved her and thanking her for being my ride or die for all those years- I apologized over and over for not being able to save her and I promised I would never forget her for as long as I lived. I could feel her growing more tachypneic and was concerned that was a sign of discomfort, so I rang the bell. The veterinarian- the one whose name I wish I could remember- materialized and asked if I was ready. I said, between sobs, that I was as ready as I could ever be. We had discussed the drug cocktail previously so I knew what she was holding in her hand, and I knew this was it. I laid my head on Ruby's chest, as I had so many times in our normal life, and I listened to her heart. Felt her breathe. I felt her respiratory rate slow, and eventually I heard her heart slow to a stop. I waited for the veterinarian to listen, to officially declare it, but I knew. My sweet Ruby, my OG ride or die... she was gone. Sometime after 0100 on 08/03, my Ruby left this earth. I can only hope, pray, that the Rainbow Bridge is real, and that I will see my sweet girl again someday. While the veterinarian's face is the one that plays on in my dreams, and sometimes my nightmares, I want the entire VEG Newton crew working that night to know that I see you, you matter, and I am so grateful for you all. You took my girl and treated her as if she were your own- that care was palpable. I cannot thank guys you enough for the incredible care you gave Ruby, for fighting for her when she was too weak to fight for herself, for the compassion and expertise you all possess and share with your patients. Your work is so important and your efforts are so appreciated. Overall, I felt as the staff was competent and very caring for my pat. I however believe the price is completely unreasonable for the service. At the moment, it doesn't appear there is a lot of competition in Boston in 24 hour emergency clinics which may contribute to the exorbitant prices. My only comparable experience is my time in San Diego where I paid about ~1/3 for the same diagnosis and action a little over a year ago at a premier clinic there. I've already done my research and intend to try another clinic in the city for the next emergency for my dog. Everyone took the time to introduce themselves and update me and my friend on Otpor's condition. Even the directors came up to me personally to ask how I was doing and if they could make my visit more comfortable. One of the veterinarians caught that we were using the U-100 syringes for his insulin, which should have been administered with U-40s, and recommended a more effective insulin for Otpor. Otpor received such great care during his 3 day stay there. I will be forever grateful for everyone there for saving his life and helping me make the best of a terrible situation. Best of all, visiting hours are 24/7 so I was allowed to do homework while petting Otpor all through the weekend. Next time you have a pet emergency, come here! I would NOT recommend this place to ANYBODY!!! Last Friday, my boyfriend (21) and I (20) took our kitten because he seemed to have dislocated/fractured his leg. They took a few x-rays for him, gave him a shot of a painkiller as well as an anti-inflammatory shot, and sent us home with pain medication. ALL FOR $587. They showed us the x-rays and scared the s**t out of us by saying that he might need 5-10k worth of SURGERY or possible AMPUTATION!!! Today, we brought him to a local vet clinic to see what they could do for him because that is absolutely insane. This woman told us that he also has a fractured toe, that VEG totally missed. This woman also informed us that our HE is a SHE! Also totally missed by VEG. She is also able to sedate our poor kitty, pop her dislocation back into place, and wrap her up for a total of $370. Overall, VEG is very clearly not qualified to help out your poor animals in a state of emergency. They didn't even wrap her up to keep her more comfortable for the weekend when we would not have been able to get in anywhere. They also totally missed crucial information and charged us double what we are paying today for the smallest of things. They saw two young adults and took advantage. I am not one to write yelp reviews for places, but my kitten is my everything and I'm disgusted with this practices way of helping. If I could leave 0 stars... I would. read more

Seek care elsewhere! VEG veterinarians offer the best and the worst in care! The best is Dr. Jessie Bishop and Dr. Victoria Mellow. Exceptionally skilled and caring veterinarians. The worst was Dr. Lauren Krone and Dr. Kristen Groves. They shouldn't treat pets! They lack empathy and compassion. Simply put, they have cruel streaks. Our 16-year-old dog, Jenny, suffered from kidney failure. She needed iv fluids to try and save her life. VEG promotes everywhere that "you can stay with your dog during treatment" (on their web page, on social media, it is even written on their wall in big letters!) It is what makes their service unique! We wanted to be with Jenny since we feared losing her. She also suffered from separation anxiety. Another big reason we opted to have her treated at VEG. We talked with VEG at length, explaining our situation before admitting Jenny. They confirmed they were on board with letting us stay with Jenny for the three days of fluids. We expressed our gratitude! They said if they became swamped, "We might need to step out for a minute," I presumed it would be with Jenny, and we would quickly be able to return. Not sure why Jenny would be the patient selected to "step out" as she was in critical condition. Dr. Mellow greeted us when we arrived. She couldn't have been nicer. Erica, the veterinary tech, was also terrific. In the morning, the shift changed, and we were handed off to Dr. Krone. Things took a tragic turn. She insisted Jenny be caged. She ordered us out of the building, sighting Covid as an excuse. We're fully vaccinated and had been there for twelve hours. Keeping our masks on the entire time. Dr. Krone informed us at 9 am that they would most likely be swamped till late Saturday night. We'd paid the $3,000 deposit for the originally agreed-upon treatment plan. But found ourselves in the terrible position of deciding whether or not to suspend treatment. Fluids were Jenny's only hope! We reluctantly put Jenny in the cage. She became frantic! I'm haunted by the image of having to push her into the cage. She was terrified, desperately wanting me to take her out! I told VEG I would try it for an hour. Please get me if Jenny doesn't settle. I'd wait in my car outside. I received a text from Dr. Krone. Saying she wanted to discharge Jenny at 2:30 pm, Bizarre since Jenny hadn't received even a day of fluids. It was clear Dr. Krone wanted to clear her patient load rather than help Jenny. About an hour later, I looked out my car window and saw Jenny being walked. It was a frigid 9-degrees. Jenny couldn't walk; she was falling over. I ran to her. She was shivering from cold and fear. A client told me Jenny had been howling and crying in the cage. The sound was piercing! Dr. Krone bombastically instructed Jennys nurse Zach to tell us we could stay only a minute with Jenny and then put her back in the cage. I told him not to; we'd be taking Jenny home. Zach Kindly told us we were doing the right thing! I asked to speak with Medical Director Dr. Lobes. I expressed intense displeasure for reneging on the originally agreed-upon treatment plan. Dr. Lobes tried to remedy things, knowing how dire things were. He agreed to let us borrow their iv machine to continue the treatment at home. Dr. Lobes wanted Jenny checked on, so we arranged to have a visiting veterinarian come to the house and take her vitals. We emailed him that we had put that plan in place. (Dr. Lobes was traveling through a mountain range with no cell phone reception). We needed a new fluid bag and the machine to be re-programmed when the fluids ran out. That happened at 2 am. We called the hospital to say we would be there in half an hour. They told us we were all set. Upon my husband's arrival, A belligerent Dr. Groves told him they would not be giving us any fluids or the iv machine. Dr. Groves said, "Were not a Rent A Centre". Such a callous, mean-spirited attitude! We're trying desperately to save Jenny's life. My husband said to Dr. Groves, "Do you want my dog to die?" No response. Again, we're in a terrible position. Our only option was to bring Jenny back to this horrible Doctor for fluids. So at 3 am, we packed up our poor dog and returned. I requested Jenny's blood be re-tested; there was little improvement. We made the painful decision to have our sweet Jenny discharged and have an assisted, passing at home. I don't usually write bad reviews. Hopefully, it will spare someone from putting their pet in the heartless hands of Dr. Krone or Dr. Groves! Bullies determined to exercise their power over a vulnerable little dog. When I returned at 3 am, I held Jenny up to Dr. Groves and said, this is your victim. Jenny is pictured below. These doctors split-second decisions made things so difficult. They chose cruelty over kindness. Bullies target the vulnerable and helpless. It's cowardly! Could there have been a better outcome if Jenny wasn't put under such duress?
