We had some repairs needed desperately in our kitchen and bathroom. We called around and got prices all over the board. When we spoke with Sean, with Versa-Tile, he was very clear about what his prices included and would not include as well as offered additional options that we didn't even think about. And as we were speaking with him, it became clear why some quotes were lower from other contractors. And I get that, as so many people give a low low bid and then after the job has been started, all these hidden charges come in to play. Initially, I hired Sean to redo my shower. After seeing what a great job he and Fernando were doing, I added the countertops, backsplash, and floors. I'm ecstatic about the end result. The bathroom looks brand new! Sean took my old eyesore 1960s bathroom and turned one of my favorite rooms in the house. Prior to Sean, my counters were oddly low but I didn't want to replace the counters or sinks because of the shape of the room. There's a problem on Yelp with successful businesses: they don't know how to handle their popularity. They don't return calls, they don't make the appointments, they aren't capable of dealing with inquiries. It's a problem, hardly worth downgrading their overall, but worth considering. I was having terrible problem with listed tiling people. Then I saw Versa Tile and even though there were only a couple of reviews, thought I might as well. I have never been happier with the result. First Sean called me the same day I called and was over (on time) the next day. So rare around here. He looked at what I wanted and not did he not try to sell me something else, he told me exactly what I'd need. He made a reasonable offer, put it in writing and gave me a start date in the immediate future. He gave me a list of things to get as I had already started the project with Home Depot supplies, was phone accessible when I had questions. Then he showed up on time. He was pleasant, thorough and completely conscientious. The slightest variance was given to me to discuss and solve. Every suggestion of mine was incorporated and those of his rejected were done so without event. The job wasn't completed in the single day we'd anticipated. He came the next day, didn't just spit and paste, but really continued for several hours. and the end result was spectacular. On his way out he patched a brick on my front porch which had nothing to do with the bathroom work he had been hired for. I will start with the bottom line. How about that? Sean McDonough from Versa Tile saved me. Yep, simply put, that's what he did. Why? keep on reading. Only want the gist? skip to the last paragraph. I had contracted some guy (NOT Sean), who claimed to have 20 years of experience laying tiles, to replace the tiles in my entrance, dining area, and kitchen. Overall it was a 220 sqr foot job. The guy assessed and said he could do it and that he had done far more complicated projects than this one. I was convinced by his track record and low price and I went with him. On the 2nd day I noticed that some tiles were laid unevenly. When I inquired about that, the guy simply said that the floor was uneven, and therefore, the tile couldn't be laid evenly. When I asked if there was something we could do about it, like putting more/less thinset to compensate for that, the guy said that if he puts more thinset, he would end up higher than the floor in the living room, which would require a reducer. I then asked him why wasn't he using a level when laying the tiles, and he said he was going by the floor. Oh wait, didn't we just say the floor wasn't level? Long story short, I had to stop the guy until I consult with some more people to see how we can remedy/mitigate/improve the situation, because as you know, once the tile is laid and the thinset is cured, you will have to break it to remove it (More time & cost for me so no thank you). Anyway, my intention in this little intro is not to rant and rave on another guy's work, but to contrast it with Sean's. And now, since I have him in the picture, the review on HIM and HIS work can start. Shortly after I fired the first guy, I gave Sean a call and asked him to come over and give me an estimate for a 220 sqr ft. job. I didn't tell him the job has already been started, that it was *not to my liking*, and that he was to jump in to fix somebody else's sub-par work and finish it up like a champ! I didn't because I was afraid I'd get a NO over the phone. In retrospect, I know he would have come anyway! He came the day after to assess the situation. From the get-go, I could see Sean was a pro. He knew his stuff very well. He checked the floor and explained why the other guy's work went astray, what were the pitfalls and mistakes made, and what should have been done to avoid them. Finally, he suggested solutions and gave a time frame and a fair price to complete the job. It's worth noting this job wasn't a cake walk, for one reason, since he had to remove tiles that already been laid to correct the lippage. Another reason is because it was a staggered 12 x 24 job, which is prone to lippage and known to require expertise and high level of workmanship. We closed on a price and a starting date. Sean showed up at my place as scheduled and started work. He worked with a level and with tile leveling system that eliminates lippage. He didn't give me excuses but reasons, he wasn't succinct or repetitive in his answers but descriptive and compelling, and most importantly, he was receptive to my feedback and worked with me when I raised issues or suggested alternatives. Overall, the scope of the work creeped slightly and Sean spent few more hours on the project. We agreed beforehand on how these hours were to be billed so everything was clear and on the table right off the bat. I was very happy with the result at the end. Sean was able to rectify the situation and complete the job with as little lippage as possible, not to mention, the grout he picked for me meshed up beautifully with the tile. So why four and not five starts? Four stars because the job wasn't clean. Yeah, I understand cutting and laying tile can be a one messy job, but the messiness was all over my place. To his defense, I should say that Sean cleaned up after him, but there was still a lot of dust and debris left after he finished his work. Another thing is communication. It was great at the beginning but towards the end, it kinda dwindled. I had to ask him a few times to send me the revised invoice after we were done. This could have been handled better and quicker on his part. Lastly, the estimate of the hours and materials was good but the difference between the estimate and the final cost wasn't small change. The reason comes from a good place though. Sean didn't try to make an extra buck on my back. Not at all. He just believed and was hoping to finish it up in that time frame, but as it is always the case, things come up so we had to reevaluate. Brownies: Sean covered a crack I had in my foundation before laying the tile, and he did it for free!!! (First guy just shrugged and said he won't be held responsible in the future). I called up Versa Tile, since I was in a time crunch and not only was Sean INCREDIBLY helpful, but very knowledgeable ... and, not to mention, kind, flexible, and easy to converse with as well! The people I work for were suitably impressed and had their table tops before deadline (which is worth its weight in gold in this town, if I do say so myself). Sean and his guys have done work for me a few times and have always been excellent. I live in an old house and Sean is experienced enough to make things work no matter how wonky the shape of the house. He is expert in all aspects of tile installations using both modern and traditional materials and techniques. He has torn out annd re-done a shower for me and made it blend seamlessly into the pre-existing tiles. Likewise the floor of another vintage bathroom that had bulged and loosened in the 50 years since it was installed. Sean was able to tear out the floor, level everything out, and install a new but vintage looking floor of traditional tiles. He knows where to find the older looking tiles so that the replacements look like they have been there forever. His latest work for me was to create a "Crazy Quilt" bathroom from the frame out. After a complete tear out down to the stud frame Sean was able to create a square enough space (in my old un-square house) so that the tiles laid in square and true. The Crazy Quilt looks exactly like I envisioned. If I see a place to post a photo of that with this review I will do so. You cannot go wrong with Sean and Versa-Tile. Sean came highly recommended by a friend who I work with on interior design projects. He installed a significant amount of subway tile at my families restaurant which we had designed and built primarily ourselves. He guided us through each and every step. Since the ideas kept changing on a whim (sorry Sean!) he provided us with multiple quotes and was very fair and understanding, Helped with ordering and design, And installed within a timely manner being that we were pressured to opening as soon as possible. He really knows his stuff! He predicted that the dark grout I wanted to use may draw attention to imperfections being that it was such a large space that we were covering but I was set on the idea so he didn't pressure me to use something else and in the end he was right but I was still glad that we used the dark grout. I just mention this to highlight that he really is well versed and experienced in tiling. Aside from that, he was just pleasant and fun to work along side with. II am happy to report that in the intimidating world of slippery contractors, I have found THE BEST TILERS IN THE WORLD, who treat their clients with patience, respect, and care! It's strange, but having (almost -- final inspection is next week) survived a contractor experience from hell renovating a new office space, I literally had a "knight in shining armor" experience where Sean and Bobby came to my rescue! They came to my rescue on short notice, and they delivered a BEAUTIFUL result for my office bathroom, that otherwise would have never made it to my inspection date. They arrived early, stayed late, and worked to the job was done. Bobby even returned the next day after the job was done (after my building locked them in the garage after hours and they had to wait an extra hour to get sprung!) to make sure that the new brand of grout that Daltile recommended had the topnotch result that they strive to deliver for their clients. (It did, but he still cleaned the tile and joints with extra TLC like he was working on the Sistine Chapel!) I couldn't be happier with their professionalism, courtesy, promptness, willingness to see a project through on a last minute notice with a pressured deadline with grace and humor (and a great, competitive price!) They are going to be doing a bathroom remodel at my house, and my office building has asked them to do some major repair work for them. The other workers in my office suite literally stood around watching them, and everyone watching their work and seeing the result was impressed. It was a tricky job with large format textured tile in a space that had a lot of irregularities, but you would never know it by the flawless result! I couldn't be happier, and thank Sean, Bobby, and their Yelp reviewers for a great experience! Update: Our inspection went well (compliments for the bathroom, but not the general contractor from the picky Beverly Hills inspector). I hired Sean to fix several broken floor tiles in our restaurant, and he sure is a Versa Tile guy! Not only was scheduling the work a breeze, but he also showed up a half hour earlier than the time agreed upon! It's rare to find a punctual contractor, not to mention one who knows his stuff. After popping up our broken tiles Sean found a huge crack in the concrete slab under the tiles, but was able to give us a long lasting fix that is budget friendly and only took one day to do the repairs. I had Sean come out and do a fairly small remodel job, and I was so impressed with him and his work I began looking for other tile issues around the house I could hire him for. I eventually had him repair/replace grout and freshen up tile in several other rooms, as well as lay down about 100 square feet of new tile. He is very detail oriented and takes pride in what he does. Sean demanded that we pay him the price that he quoted us. We did not like his finished product. He admitted that he goofed up. When we wanted him to redo the unsightly part, he argued. My husband had to tell him to leave and had another contractor fix the problem. He does what he wants to do and does endless explaining why. I picked Versa Tile based on yelp reviews but did not have the experience that many people on here had. Although I don't have any issues with his work itself, I found him to be very disorganized and did not take care of my floors/home. Plenty of clashes over sticking to his time and budget quote as well. But the multiple neighbor complaints (leaving pallets in front yard, leaving his stuff in front of their units, blocking their cars, etc) and the general disorder (back door left unlocked and open, dirty and wet sponges left on ground, uncleaned floors after job was finished) is what really leaves me unable to recommend him to others. read more

I am VERY HAPPY I hired Sean and his crew to re-do my entry, kitchen and bathroom floors (Including the shower walls). Sean is a really nice guy, he was extremely knowledgeable and explained the various pitfalls he may run into (i.e. lip-page that may be created by staggering my tiles 50/50 ). He recommended I go with a 33% stagger which I did, I was a bit hesitant since I thought 50/50 staggering would be more visually symmetrical but I don't even notice it with the bone grout. The floors are completely smooth with no lip-page :-) During my family's stay in various hotels for the few weeks we moved out of our place I noticed all of the horrible tile work done on the bathrooms (the W in Westwood was the worst!) Versa-Tile did an excellent job with the setting of the tiles and spacing. I also had them create a niche in the shower to hold the shampoo and conditioner and they included a large shelf in the corner much bigger than the one I had previously. I couldn't be happier with the results! I only wish I could afford to re-do our master bathroom too! I also appreciated Sean calling me to get my opinion on what I wanted to do as the work was being done (since I couldn't be there). He could have easily just done things his way but he wanted to make sure I was going to be happy. A couple examples are (Since I was also redoing the wood flooring) he wanted to know i where I wanted the entryway floor to start --at the column (in the front or in the middle)-- also whether I wanted to remove the kick-boards so that I could have the tile floor run underneath the kick-boards (which meant replacing them) or to cut the tile to set next to the kick-boards. I elected to have him remove the kick-boards so that the job wouldn't look like a remodel and yes I had to replace the kick-boards but I am the type that wants things done correctly and to look "right" and Sean gave me the opportunity to make that decision....I hadn't even thought about that issue. Also, he took a look at the threshold I had in my master bathroom and noticed that you could see the marble threshold when the door was closed from inside our master bedroom. He suggested that since I was going to redo the wood flooring in the master that he should cut the threshold back a few inches so that the new wood floor would run all the way up to the door so that you cant see the marble from inside the bedroom and you won't see the wood from inside the bathroom (when the door is closed). I didn't even contract him to work on the master bathroom tile but he was thinking about the entire flow of all the floors. He also worked well with the other contractors to ensure that all floors would be level and on top of all that his prices were reasonable, fair and broken down for me (unlike other bids I had received).
