Strong House Inn

Strong House Inn

My husband and I stayed at the Strong House Inn for 4 weeknights in late October. We stayed the…read moreAdirondack room on the first floor of the Rabbit Ridge guesthouse. The room has a delightful 'outdoorsy' decor, a large and luxurious bathroom, and a private patio abutting a little birch forest. The bed and the bedding were very comfortable. The common rooms and the dining rooms of the main house were spacious and tastefully decorated. The breakfast was fresh and flavorful, with an egg dish, a sweet side, and fresh fruit every morning. There were no choices when it came to breakfast, which may be a turn-off for some people. The location of the Inn with respect to downtown Vergennes is a big plus. Several local restaurants, many of the city's historic sights, and charming shops are one-half to three-quarters of a mile walk away. The weather was beautiful, and my husband and I enjoyed strolling to and through the city many times. We had a very enjoyable stay at the Inn, and would recommend it as a relaxing and beautiful Vermont place to stay.

Overall very disappointed. I am one of those persons who is ok with sacrificing luxury for a good…read moreprice. But this place was fairly expensive and far from luxurious. I felt ripped off, especially since AAA Automoble Club has rated this establishment with three stars. They will hear from me. Positives first: friendly owner/manager; pretty public area with dining room nicely furnished in old style Queen Anne and Chipendale; host provided a lovely hot breakfast; there were plenty of brochures for sight-seeing attractions in the area. Negatives: Sofa in manager's office was stacked with shopping bags and large plastic bins, making for an unfavorable first impression at check-in. Very small room furnished from granny's attic; the "twin beds" were actually a king bed whose headboard and footboard had been sawed in half. Air conditioning did not work (or was set at a warm temperature) and when we opened the window to try to get some air we found the window sill and window casing paint was badly chipped and should have been scraped and painted 15 years ago (see picture). Floors were dirty; white bathroom door had yellowed from years of smudged finger prints (see picture). In an old house you can expect to see door stops at the floor to hold doors open, but never before had I seen a fire extinguisher used as a door stop (see picture). This place is struggling and I am sorry to post this negative information. I would not have stayed here for one third the price had I known in advance.

Shelburne Vineyard - Flight of ciders

Ruby welcomed us to the tasting room and patiently poured and explored with us the several kinds we were considering. It was a lot of fun, an experience we highly recommend as a part of wedding preparations. We left with a case of excellent bottles of reds, whites, and cider that we are excited to share with our guests.

Went to the vineyard on a whim and it did not disappoint. Starting with the wines, they could be…read morehit or miss. It really depends on your palette, and you have to understand that the grapes local to the area will not be your typical grapes. My family got flights, both sweet and dry. We really liked the 2023 Louise and 2022 Marquette. In fact, the Marquette was the best of the bunch from my point of view. The ciders were both really sweet, but the Eden Angeljus was pretty good and reminiscent of Mead. The Riesling was also a favorite. We got a cheeseboard for two, and that was freaking delicious. It came with a maple cranberry preserve that was out of this world. But the cheese, and even the crackers, were exceptionally good, too. Beyond that, the service was exemplary. Ruby in particular was a joy to talk to and quite good at her job. Finally, the live music they had playing was surprisingly good. I did not expect that kind of quality on a random Saturday in May. I highly recommend going to this winery.

A really beautiful venue we attended for a wedding. The grounds are truly beautiful and manicured,…read moreand every staff member was top shelf! Everyone we met who attended gave nice reviews for their accommodations and we viewed some that were very, very nice. We lost out, sadly. That said, our unit was an absolute disaster! I replied to Basin Harbor's post-stay survey but have had no response. I normally give rave reviews to places we've stayed around the world; BUT, our unit at $330+ per night after taxes was horrible. We stayed, in basically an upstairs attic space with no refrigerator, no coffee maker (they were in the hall outside the room to be shared and the coffee maker didn't even work!) There was no TV which was ok in a rustic place but not even 2 seats to sit for us both in the unit. The attic ceilings were so low, I continually hit my head and literally had to kneel(!) to see my reflection in the bathroom mirror to shave our comb my hair. I have pictures if you don't believe it. The shortage of convenient electical outlets in this attic space that really should only be rented to a single person who doesn't mind all of these inconveniences and at a much lower rate. Truly overpriced for this unit. We were there for a wedding and my wife could not see her reflection either in the tiny mirror to prepare. We did not complain since this was a celebratory event and we were sure to tip all of the wonderful staff; BUT feel like we really got mistreated even though we booked with very ample time for this event. If you go to Basin Harbor, do NOT accept accommodations listed as Penfield Place, particularly the 2nd Floor which we had no warning of. Had a wonderful weekend for this event but the absolute worst accommodations.

Common Ground Center - Fresh vegetables, as local as they get! We even generate our own compost and use it in the garden.

I'll be honest - I was a little nervous coming here. I actually visited for a weekend work retreat…read moreand although I'm not much of a camper per se, I loved every minute of it. They had several unique cabins on the property as well as "suites" with bathrooms in a larger building that also had a community area. The property is gorgeous with mountains overlooking the treeline, a large field (with Quidditch goals if you're a HP fan), a stunning lake, another community area with a kitchen attached, a barn, campfire area, and trails. There is something for everyone to do here but what I loved the most was being able to look up at the sky at night and see all the stars! If you're looking for a place to reconnect with nature, this is it!

We've gone for the family camp twice and we were there this weekend for their twentieth anniversary…read moreweekend. We are returning again this July. My kids talk about camp all year long and it has become an important part of our lives. We all love it. It's my piece of heaven on earth. We stay in the cabins. There were plenty of beds. Bunk beds and twins with a little piece that goes between two beds pushed together that eliminates that uncomfortable gap. There was plenty of shelf space for clothes as well. Some people stay in tents, others in the Eco-lodge. There are coin operated washing machines, which is important when traveling with little kids. We brought sheets, pillows, sleeping bags, lanterns and towels. There's no electricity in the cabins but there is in the dining hall and the Eco Lodge. You can charge your devices there and connect with the world if you really want to. We stayed screen free and didn't miss it at all. During family camp there are plenty of activities and kids go to Kidville for three hours in the morning. I love hiking up the mountain, relaxing by the river or taking dance classes. Others prefer glass blowing, art class or playing instruments. Activities vary by week. It's relaxing, people are great, and the campus is contained so I can give my kids more freedom than when we're at home. In the afternoons/ evenings there are organized family games like Quiddich and scavenger hunts. There's no pressure to participate but it was a lot of fun. The food is vegetarian and delicious. Meals are planned with kids in mind and there are kid friendly options. They even published a camp cookbook. For me what makes the camp is the people. Camp was built little by little and with a lot of love. The tiles in the bathroom were 2005 camper art projects, and many of those families return every year. The people who run it live what they believe and they are active in the community, they use solar power and they work hard to decrease their carbon footprint. A tour of all of the features of the Eco-lodge was fascinating. They run different camps for under served populations. Camp Kaleidoscope is for families with autistic children, Camp Outright is for LGBTQ teenagers and they run a camp for families in the midst of high conflict divorces. They don't shy away from hard situations. All families are truly welcomed and it's a non-judgmental, cooperative environment. Communication is real and the friendships are genuine. There is a bit of sticker shock but there is a sliding scale and I believe it is money well spent. The food is high quality and fresh. They invest in maintaining the property with ecologically friendly products, they provide a variety of activities for children and adults, and there are enough staff on hand to deal with issues as they arise. It has been an experience that has greatly enriched my life and my children's lives.
