What a lovely respite! We found Mad River Inn as a haven from the overheated yurt we had booked. The owners (Brandon and Susanna) let us know we weren't the first yurt stayers they had rescued. And what a rescue! From an abundance of tea options to daily fresh cookies to some wonderful recommendations, we were comfortable from the start of our stay to the end. This ICU RN needed respite after a very long day leaf peeping and hoping for that one more than decent photo (amateur photographer). "I need a place to rest my weary bones" what is nearby? So very thankful I was near the Mad River Inn B&B!! My requirements were simple-a bed, a pillow and sleep...I'm gone early am was the plan. Then I met The innkeepers/my hosts. From the moment I entered the home I truly felt cared for! By far the best stay I've had anywhere in this world (I travel a lot). Beautiful place, lots of charm, love the antiques! Lovely rooms! The tea and coffee stations were superb...I'm a diehard coffee drinker but the tea station (selections and dainty china teacups) hooked me. The yummy homemade cookies, ice water, snacks and sodas were such lovely touches! The books, history, information, touristy flyers etc WOW! Curl up by a fireplace or fire pit, sink into a chair, kick off your shoes (oops, right they were already off and left at the door!) revised that early escape plan .....I did not want to leave! Breakfast was beyond amazing and delicious (omelet-eye rolling fresh gooey cheese, and fresh fruit.) The other guests were mostly returning guest or friend of someone who had stayed here. Friendliest people ever! Felt very at home with this entire way too short stay. The total kicker for me was when I returned home....took 425 leaf peeping and Vermont photos and the only ones I truly loved and felt were spectacular were taken in the back yard of the Mad River Tavern!!! Loved this so much that I am Seriously rethinking my February birthday trip NH and my usual place (15 years)....it was that wonderful of a stay at the Mad River Inn. Brandon and Susanna are the best! My boyfriend and I have stayed at the Inn several times now. It's so convenient, close to Sugarbush resort. We go ski and get to enjoy the hot tub after! They have made the Inn feel so homey, they make delicious breakfasts in the morning for everyone. Even afternoon cookies and pastries. We could not have had a better stay at any other inn than we had at Mad River Inn. I'm not typically a fan of B&Bs and especially not of communal breakfasts, but this inn felt very comfortable. Our stay overlapped with pleasant guests we enjoyed meeting during both of our breakfasts. The house is just what you would hope for in an old Vermont Inn. Amenities are modern while the style is antique without feeling worn out. We felt very comfortable and right at home. Brandon and Susannah are extremely accommodating hosts who are friendly and personable. The food is delicious. Bed is comfortable. Location is within an easy drive of Mad River, Sugarbush, Stowe, Waterbury, etc. My favorite amenity is the tea drawer! It was great to have hot water and tea options any time of day. I booked this space at the last minute and was lucky to get a room for me and my two children for thanksgiving. The owners, Suzannah and Brandon were both kind and patient with us and our twin seven year olds. The thanksgiving dinner was nothing short of fantastic!! The turkey was moist and flavorful! The owner's seeing that we did not have plans invited us to their family's meal witch was very kind. The breakfast the next day was bountiful and plenty as well. My children, which are picky and a handful, ate loads. Our room was both comfy and charming. After speaking to the owners I was surprised to find out that they just assumed ownership of the inn two months earlier and were just coming up to speed on the mechanics of running the place. This was our first time staying at the Mad River Inn. We would definitely stay here again. The new owners, Brandon & Susanna, are wonderful hosts and made us feel very welcome and at home. They've made many improvements to the inn and have more planned. Brandon was working on the new fire pit when we stayed. It should be finished by the end of June 2022. We stayed in the Champlain Room. The bed was super comfy. The bathroom had recently been remodeled and was beautifully done. Loved the subway & penny tile in the shower. The breakfasts were delicious with fresh fruit, juice, coffee and eggs or pancakes. We were really spoiled by the afternoon cookies. Susanna even made gluten free cookies for us! We enjoyed the hot tub on the back porch. And put the pool table downstairs to good use. Brandon & Susanna had lots of excellent recommendations of places to see, hike & dine. Cute old Victorian house on a very quiet street. It's only a couple miles from the shops and restaurants in Waitsfield, so it's very conveniently located. The "check-in" process is a note left on the dining room table, telling guests where their rooms are. I had no room key, which I'm OK with as I had no valuables with me, but be warned in case that's a problem for you. There is someone at the inn at all times, so I wasn't worried about it. The back porch is a nice spot to hang out in the morning with the other guests, and it overlooks a large yard and scenic cornfield. The room was small, but comfy. The bathroom in the room is very small, and the shower was a bit tight for space. It was a comfortable stay, and we made good use of the pool table in the basement game room. The only real ding against the inn is the breakfast. There's no menu prior to each day so you have no idea what breakfast will be until you sit down for it, and you aren't given any options. You're forced to accept or not accept whatever is cooked for you. While I appreciate the level of effort it takes to run an inn, you have to give your customers a choice. I don't eat pancakes or crepes, and unfortunately that's what was for breakfast two of the the three days we were there. I was offered a bowl of cold cereal as a consolation, and I find that unacceptable for a B&B. It only takes a couple minutes to whip up some eggs and toast. When paying to stay at a bed and breakfast, I shouldn't have to go out and buy breakfast. read more

This summer was my second multi-day stay at Mad River Inn. With all the concerns about COVID this summer, Luc was upfront about his extensive sanitization of the Inn and the rooms. It was spotless, as usual and the other guests were great. My daughter and I had a great weekend. Luc's breakfast was great all three days, he even graciously adjusted the menu to our individual tastes. Comfortable rooms, cozy bed, great water pressure in the shower (very important!). Stayed during peak leaf-peeping time in 2013--had limited options due to lateness in planning our annual leaf-peeping trip and it was Columbus Day weekend (so doubly busy). The rooms were clean, and the innkeepers were very friendly. We were on the ground floor and the room door didn't shut all the way, so it didn't feel like there was very much privacy. Sometimes it was a bit noisy, as well, but that's the risk you take on a first floor. We were exicted to stay here. The pics on the internet were cute, and we decided to splurge on this place out of the way vs. some cheaper chains in one of the towns. We pulled into the inn at around 6PM ready to drop off our bags, and get connected to the Internet. We had been driving all day, and didn't have cell service for the last couple hours so we needed internet to find a place to eat dinner. The inn was unattended with a note on the table giving us basic info. That seemed fine, and normal for a BNB type place. A guest who also arrived and hadn't met the innkeepers was rummaging around the kitchen trying to figure out how to access the wifi. I didn't like that because we really needed internet. I left her to that job, and we grabbed our bags and went upstairs. The room was much tinier and less pretty than in the pictures. I noticed the bed and bureau looked like they had been left outdoors in the rain for months, with severe water stains. My boyfriend said the curtains and art from the pics online werent in the room. The room was super tiny. If you look at the pics online, I don't know how they did it. Maybe photoshopping or the bed in the room was a twin when they took the pic, I don't know. The walls are paper thin. I knew we were in for a night of whispering if we didn't want the other guests hearing every word. The room was a big disappointment, but the reason we decided not to stay was there was no way to lock our door! To me, the only places you are not able to lock your stuff is a hostel. Even at a campground you have your car right next to your tent. As someone who has backpaced all over Central and South America paying $4 and $6 a night, this blows my mind. How is it a room, if you cannot securely leave your belongings??? I have stayed in a lot of very quirky places, with a lot of really interesting people. No lock on the door with other guests poking around was too much for me. At this point we decided this was a place that didn't care enough about what they do, and we decided to leave. We left a voicemail for the innkeeper saying this was not okay and took off, not knowing where we would eat or sleep. The innkeeper (a man) called us back and got into a big fight with my partner. We were on speaker in the car so I heard it all, and it wasn't pretty. My partner said that we were travelers, and furniture that you would not pick up off the side of the road, and no way to lock your door was unacceptable. At this point, the man called my boyfriend a "Rick F***". No kidding. I think he decided because we said we were experienced travelers we had to be rich people!!! They guy said he was keeping our money. Just wow. What a terrible place. Maybe the other rooms are nicer, but I don't recommend calling these people out if they make a mistake. They respond with a boatload of hate and anger instead of trying to make it right. We wound up back in Montpelier at the Hilton. It was the same price, and the furniture was clean, and the staff was kind. I am normally not a chain person, but we needed both a hotel and a restaurant fast, and things are closing early due to Covid. We will be working with the card company to try to get our money back. read more

Great place for a weekend getaway. We stayed in a two room suite with a private bath. Most important for us, the beds were super comfortable and the sheets were delightful. We missed breakfast the first morning because we bolted out early to catch first chair at Mad River Glen, but Luc make sure we didn't leave without muffins and coffee in hand! The second morning we enjoyed a luxurious breakfast at the Inn. Luc and his family were very welcoming. We will be back! read more

We booked a horse vacation package at the Vermont Icelandic Horse Farm and Mad River Inn. Horrible experience! The package confirmation letter claimed the final ride ended at 4 pm on our last day. The website claims "Our Inn Ride prices include ride with guide, meals​, and lodging". Owing to the final ride ending at 4pm and that we had an 8 hour drive back to Pennsylvania, we opted for the 3-day/4-night package for $1,050 pp. Upon arrival, we were told that "we were on our own" for dinner our final night. (Why would we get dinner the other nights we rode but not this night?) Awkward start. We then learned that the final ride ends at12:30/1:00 pm, not the 4 pm stated in the confirmation letter. Had we been given correct information, we would have booked only the 3-day/3-night package for $950 pp and left at 1:00pm after the final ride. So we asked to check out on day 3 and to be credited for $100 pp, since the error in booking was due to their incorrect information. Decent, honest business owners, who genuinely care about their customers would admit they made an error, apologize profusely, credit the difference and correct their information going forward. Not this husband/wife team. Luc, the Inn owner said we needed to take this up with Karen, the Ranch owner (adding tersely that "she's not going to give you any money back"). When we then spoke with Karen, she instantly, dismissively and angrily refused any responsibility and said all the details were stated in the contract we were sent. Fortunately, we had a copy of that contract with us, and we agreed to review it later that night. And later that night is when she actually YELLED at us! With our contract in hand, we asked if she had a minute to discuss it. And she screamed "No! I'm tired, I worked hard today and I'm not giving you any money back!" We were stunned. We tried to calmly discuss this with her and Luc, but to no avail. Luc also raised his voice and neither would calmly hear us out. And, this whole scene took place in front of another guest's child. We all work hard. We worked very hard to earn the money to spend on a vacation at their establishment, which was ruined with that confrontational outburst. Read the bad reviews of this operation. These are true. Right down to the small details. These two owners have an underlying simmering contempt for customers. When we arrived, Karen was in the kitchen and didn't even introduce herself or say hello or welcome. At every turn, we felt like intruders. A fellow guest asked to freshen up after the final ride before heading home, and she was told "no" by Luc because he had 3 parties coming in and no room was available. We know for a fact that one room (ours) was available. The only warmth, graciousness and hospitality you'll find is on their website. And the funny thing is that Karen admitted to the incorrect information and still would not make us whole! After that outburst, she came to our room and offered to take us on an extra ride. So, let me get this straight. You just yelled at us and ruined our vacation, and you think we want to spend more time with you?! The next morning she be grudgingly offered to refund us the cost of the room for the extra night we wouldn't be staying. That was $150. When I explained, yet again, that her incorrect information led us to choose the wrong package, and the package differential was $200, she refused to refund us that amount. We filed a disputethrough our credit card company and won for the difference in package prices. No wonder their website says they prefer to be paid by cash or check. As for the riding, it was fine but not great. The barn is well run and the staff is competent. However, you will literally do about two 20-30 second bursts of tolting per ride. And about half or more of each ride is on lightly traveled gravel roads. Except for one longer day ride, you'll spend half your time getting to the beautiful meadows, mountains and forests to ride in. I'm a regular ranch vacationer having gone to almost 20 ranches around the country. I have never been treated so poorly. We were yelled at, belittled, and made to feel unwelcome and uncomfortable. All of my other ranch vacations have been wonderful, with hosts who truly enjoy what they do, who are warm, gracious and caring and who want their guests to have a wonderful experience. Luc and Karen may have passion for the horses (Karen) and for cooking (Luc), but there is no warmth or compassion for the guests who help make their livelihoods possible. There are far, far better horse riding and lodging experiences out there. Don't stay here! read more

We spent 3 nights at the Mad River Inn B & B with our two teenage girls. Ate sumptuous breakfasts, hiked the many nearby trails and rode the Icelandic Horses. Luc was incredibly accommodating and the scenery at breakfast in the morning was breathtaking. This is a great place for a couple to spend a romantic weekend, or for a family to use as home-base while exploring the Vermont countryside. We can't wait to go back! read more

This is my favorite place to stay for so many reasons. The owners are welcoming and friendly and it seems to spread like wildfire to the entire staff. Don't skip breakfast, it's great. The service is bar none and the potatoes are so yummy and very well seasoned. The rooms and property are gorgeous. The bar is full of awesome local beer. So go drink a heady topper and play some shuffle board on one of the best tables anywhere! read more
