Just got back from our vacation in Kauai and Verde is definitely on top of the list of the food places we loved. This is one of those places that you wish was located down the street from your home. Everyone who works there is super nice and friendly and the food is Delicious!!!!! During our 8 day stay we went back three times. Between me and my hubby we tried the mahi mahi tacos, ahi tacos, stacked enchiladas, spicy shrimp burrito, sopapillas and various margaritas. I recommend them all. I question the integrity of this place because they overcharged our order and also increased the price on the final check. The check on which we issued the credit card was different than the final bill! I brought it to the Manager's attention and did not argue any further for the matter of few bucks. Verde is a very small restaurant with tables in a non-descript strip mall in the Kapa'a area on the Kuhio Hwy. It difficult to see the name/place from the road. We went there on a Friday night and luckily we were early and got seating. They were very busy already and it took some time to get waiter and drinks. We were then delivered some chips and salsa. The chips were good and salsa was chunky with fresh veggies and just the right amount of spiciness. Food was great. Go early or there is a wait. Been back several times since my previously good review. Finding margaritas inconsistent. Great before. Terrible today. I've tried various veg options. Today vegi burrito. Dry as could be including green beans broccoli and fried potato cubes. No salsa unless you pay extra. No beans included, but you can pay extra. For 13 dollars you'd think a little hot sauce would be included. But, you can pay for it to be 'smothered' in green chili sauce. This was some sautéed Vegi's (no pepper or onion!) and fried potatoes wrapped in a tortilla. Avoid! Tostada better. I find it surprising that a Mexican food restaurant would not include some condiment without extra charges. I get frustrated by this here every time. We did buy the chips/salsa for 4 bucks....okay. OMG, this place is amazing! Went here 4 times in one week. The house margaritas are really good and only $3 in the afternoon. I would also recommend forking over $12 for the pina verde margarita, it's a perfect balance of sweet, spicy, tart,and boozy. I couldn't tear myself away from the mahi mahi (fresh catch of the day) burrito, so I didn't even get a chance to try anything else, but my husband tried a beef burrito and al pastor tacos on different occasions, and both were great. Pretty decent prices for a touristy joint - the servings were big and the ingredients were always fresh, so we didn't mind shelling out $12-15 for an entree. I see other people have commented about the poor service, but we only really had to wait a long time to be attended to on our first visit, and at that time, the restaurant also happened to be full. We were on vacation, so not in a particular rush to go anywhere. And once we put our drinks order in, the wait staff checked on us regularly. No issues with service at our other visits. read more

Verde was a great start to our stay on Kauai. The shrimp tacos, smothered burrito (if a place offers to smother, get it smothered!) & the beef quesadilla were great. Chips & salsa were just okay & only the first round is on the house. Margs were good but from a store bought mix- I like Costco too but for a place that touts local, I'd expect a little more effort. Great local spot for Mexican food. Their happy our is amazing - $3 house margaritas with rock salt on the rim. We had the nachos and shrimp tacos and both were delicious! The owner was very nice and attentive and even told us that the nachos are large. I am happy we found it, great spot! read more

Stopped in for a late dinner. I had the short rib sopapillla with green salsa (delicious). I had a couple bites of the fish tacos (ahi and ono). Everything was very good and prices were reasonable. Beer was $5, much lower than south shore prices. Place was packed and service was a bit slow. Watch out for the $2 charge if you ask for a chip refill. Believe the hype. So good we went back two days in a row for lunch. The first day he got the fish (ahi) tacos and I got a fish enchilada. The second day I got the tacos and he got the enchilada. The result of this highly scientific test was that we agreed the tacos are the best, if you only get to try one thing. Also when they ask "green, red, or Christmas" regarding the enchilada sauce, the red is spicy, and the green is not very flavorful. So I would go with either red or Christmas unless you don't like spicy. The medium salsa is also not flavorful so just mix it up with the other salsas from the bar, especially green is great! This taco was so good I could not stop eating it and made myself sick. A true sign of food excellence and how dangerous this delicious food is. It is not cheap, the plates are like $15 each. But worth it. Also how cool is getting served by the owner/chef? Loved this place. read more

Came here in May with my mom and my boyfriend. When I arrived in Kauai, I made it a point to ask the staff at the resort where I was staying where the good food was. Luckily, the locals did not steer me wrong! The owner catches some of the fish himself. My boyfriend and I both ordered the fish of the day tacos (Ono). It was truly delish. Grilled perfectly and the taco was stuffed with cabbage and other toppings and a unique sauce that tied everything together nicely. My mother had the beef burrito and she thought it was just ok. I do agree that the chips are strange. I did not mind them, but my mother and boyfriend hated them. I ordered the Sopapillas with Honey for dessert and it was SO FREAKING GOOD! Piping hot triangles of dough with yummy Kauai honey. HEAVEN! Will definitely be back the next time I am in Kauai! read more

a huge fan of Monaco's I make sure I head there every time I go to Kauai. I was recently turned on to Verde's from a friend that lives close by. The food was reaaaaaly good. I grew up in San Diego, so I'm always a little skeptical of "mexican" food other places. While I wouldn't call this traditional mexican fare, it definitely is really good quality and extremely tasty. It's just spicy enough and very flavorful. I would certainly go back here often if I lived on the island. The only slight ding that I have is that the flour tortilla was unusually tough and dry. I don't like the typically rubbery ones that you find at some places, but this one could have been a little softer. Delicious! Go try it! DH got the verde burrito and loved it. It looked very good. I got the smothered chicken burrito and it sucked. I think my burrito was an aberration, but I've had better burrito from a Taco Bell. However, the staff was really friendly. Everyone seemed to be having a good time and actually enjoyed their jobs. That was great! They aren't kidding about that green sauce, it's spicy! My wife and I were really excited to try to this restaurant after seeing such great reviews but sadly were left wanting more; flavor, spicier salsa (with flavor) and a warm meal. The nachos had a different flavor but were smothered in sour cream (not in a good way), one of our meals arrived after we finished the nachos and the fish tacos were mediocre except for the aioli sauce and guacamole. Overall, they have great presentation and excellent texture but everything was just on the bland side. Prices were fair but charged us extra for a small side of bland but spicey salsa. Not sure how this place is rated 4 stars. The food was anti climactic. Sin sabor! How? The pork tasted like it was boiled in too much water without even the basic seasoning. Sin sal. Mas encima, the tortillas were cold and the sopaipilla were not only inauthentic because they were made with yeast but the honey they served it with was fermenting (and not in the fun way). Coming from California, and growing up in Southern California surrounded by tons of great Mexican restaurants I have a hard time giving Verde a good review. Maybe it's just that you can't compare Hawaiian Mexican food to authentic Mexican... We ordered the spare rib tacos and the garlic shrimp burrito and weren't especially impressed by either, although I will agree that it did taste fresh. Service was good, friendly, and attentive, the establishment was clean, but that's where the positives end in my book. If you're from the mainland and on the lookout for authentic Mexican, I'd look elsewhere. But plenty of locals seemed to like it. read more

This is my first ever post on Yelp. Last Saturday I experienced the worst food I have ever had a any restaurant in my life. We ordered stacked enchiladas and a beef taco. The beef was so over processed it looked like a nasty wad of unknown material . I took most of the meat out to my loving puppy who wouldn't even eat it. Sorry Verde. We went there yesterday after the sunset to take-away our dinner. I got a "Naked" taco salad with grass-fed Kauai beef while my husband the Verde verde burrito. I don't usually like Mexican food but this was DELICIOUS! So fresh and flavorful without being overwhelming or too heavy for the stomach. He has burritos for lunch in San Francisco every now and then, but he told me that this one was absolutely the best he has ever had! I just started eating meat - this is my second time only - after years of veganism and the beef tasted so good. I love seeing how much eating local, organic and sustainable seems to be important here on the island! It's not so easy to find grass-fed meat in NoCal - at least I almost never see it. Servings are plentiful! We'll try to go back there before the end of our vacation because there's so much to try in their menu :D read more

This restaurant was excellent! The BF got the short rib tacos which were amazing! The short rib was tender and flavorful. The pico was fresh. I got the stuffed sopapilla with pork, christmas style. It was also very good. The green and red sauces were delicious and the pork was falling apart. The portions were large. We also got rice and beans....the rice was a bit dry. That was my only complaint. I would definitely come back here when I am in Kauai again. read more

These are the nicest people who run and work there. I must say the fish and all food is very fresh but we all found it to be a bit mild in flavor. They use the freshest ingredients but those expecting Mexican food should probably stick with Monico's. More authentic and the food is packed with a punch of flavor in every dish.
