When we were sat we waited 15 min before our server showed up, placed our drink order, waited another 10 min on drinks. After ordering, we didn't have to wait long on our food. O.K DT. from Swanton I supposed you like Barron's better? This place has the same menu as Barron's and Loma Linda's but somehow Ventura's has much better and consistent cooks. I will take my small, but potent, margarita here any day as compared to some large 16oz. sugar-laden lemon-limeade type wimpy drinks. ( If you want more liquid then drink water!) If you don't like the Mexican food here, try their wonderful daily home-made soups. Or the burger, fish sandwich or ribs are a great choice. Even the plain dinner salad is a good bet. Calorie conscious? The chicken fajita taco is a awesome choice. Oooey-gooey high grease level local Tex-mex it isn't. Down home, good cooking, it usually is. It's honestly like they are trying to make sure nobody comes back, like they don't want customers. Will never ever go back to this hellhole. well it has been a year and a half since my last disappointing visit. The food is still so so, the margaritas are like gasoline but people seem to like them, and the service usually is terrible unless you get a selected few good servers. Tonight service was awesome. Zach our server passed the test. Though he is new, he was very attentive. Usually when you drink tea, getting a refill rarely happens. (You don't make sales with free refills). He had this covered I gave him a five for service however the food a 2. Toledo Tex-Mex food is horrible. Too much salt and way too much cheese. The rice was chewy and tasteless. We frequent this restaurant often, and we always have good food and a great experience.Tonight we shared a full rack of ribs with fiesta rice and a salad. The salad was split as well as the entrees, most restaurants only give you an extra plate and you have to split it between you. Salad was fresh, ribs were good, sauce was not too mild or spicy. I come here once every couple weeks for JUST DRINKS. I will eat occasionally, but a burger, or chicken wings. Although I do enjoy their queso blanco dip. I try not to sit at the bar, after two or three drinks your automatically cut off, only I have noticed by one bartender in particular. Especially if you don't order food. If I stop in for an afternoon drink, I have already ate lunch at home, have been running errands and wanted a quick margarita or few. Last time, my best friend and I were specifically told "You're cut off- since you didn't order food." As I have stated in other reviews, I work in the industry. Serving & bartending. At the bar I used to work at, I would cut people off when they have had too much to drink, unruly, or quite honestly irritating majority of my other customers. Not because they didn't order food. You cannot force people to eat. Although it helps the tab and your tip...what the actual f***?! It upset me because the women whom we were talking with (my previous employers) had had about 6-8 drinks each, and my friend and I only 3. All of us sitting in the bar area. We ate at home and got dropped off by our boyfriends simply because we wanted to drink. After explaining that to the bartender, she didn't care and handed us our bill. I tipped accordingly to the service and attitude I was given. My advice is this. Sit at a table. Service may be slow at times but at least you can have more than a couple drinks to get over the slow service. Order the burger. Maybe even the chicken wings. Poor attitude in the work place puts a damper on business. If your a veteran or a rookie on the staff totem poll, always keep that in mind. It was literal trash. The complementary chips and salsa were tostidos chips and salsa off the rack, it's so bad it's laughable. The food was bland. My enchiladas had no enchilada sauce and had American cheese on it...like are you kidding me. My moms taco salad had whole uncooked peppers and onions in large prices just set on top of it salad. Ventura's is 1 of a kind. Moved to TX recently and Ventura's is 1 of 2 MUST haves for me EVERY time I come home. Best margaritas. There isn't a single margarita in TX that compares. I love the food, especially the nachos & quesadillas. If you're super picky and not down for plain old Mexican, then you may not like their Mexican. In early August 2014 a 12:00 p.m. I was craving some Mexican food after landing at Toledo airport following business in South Dakota. Ventura's was recommended by the limousine driver who drove me from the airport before dropping me off home. I went in and sat at the almost empty bar and uncrowded restaurant. Upon entering Ventura's...the bartender who looks like "Pat" the androgynous fictional character played by Julia Sweeney on Saturday Night Live with his short dusty dollar store dyed hair and thick glasses was unsmiling from the start he seemed very unhappy about my presence at the bar. I over heard him talking negatively about one of the patrons at a table with one of the servers. He did not smile or make eye contact with me and seemed preoccupied as I ordered. He had this 'Bite Me' vibe about him like I wasn't good enough for him because I was in a business suit or whatever was in that dark angry mind? Maybe it was my Paula Deen accent. Maybe he hasn't admitted to his parents (he lives with) he's straight or whatever is making him an apparent time bomb? Maybe he left his flip phone at home? I don't know but he was pretty seething. I kept wondering if his suspicious mole was just chocolate? Anyway...as the bar began to fill up for lunch he remained stoic. I had 2 tiny ice packed margaritas with 2 tacos rice & beans. Firmly, like a Highway State Patrol officer...gritting through tiny yellowed teeth he stated, "I have to cut you off" following my request for a third thimble of margarita when I asked smiling, "One more Marg then my check please"? I was shocked! The patron next to me recognized my questioning look and stated calmly, Shannon has issues. Now clearly, I too was the enemy! Now in Shannon's defense he didn't realize I had a car outside with a driver waiting for me. I don't think there was much alcohol in those two drinks either? Nor did he know the driver highly recommended Ventura's. Now before I finish my warning on Ventura's Worstaurant let me be clear, the pre-packaged food service food was very nicely warmed and pleasant rather like Taco Bell. I admit after being cut off at 1:00 p.m in the afternoon like the ever present homeless drunk in the blighted city of Toledo hosted by 2000 plus competing restaurants I felt it was my civil duty to review and to warn the Lucas County tax payers about eating and drinking at noon on Shannon's watch. I am sure the place is superb during the evening hours. The bathroom smelled like cherry something and seemed clean-ish. Kind of made me feel like writin' on their wall...Burger King's full name is Burger Luther King Jr. Cinco De Mayo on Airport Highway was my next destination after escaping this dining fiasco and the Cinco De Mayo staff greeted me with white genuine smiles made me feel glad I chose their place to visit. Heck I'm going to spend half my life scrolling for an appropriate emoji to express this guy's distaste for working at Ventura's! A friend of mine wanted to go here for her birthday so I reluctantly agreed. I tried to be optimistic but unfortunately, it was not meant to be. Our server had the personality of a rock. She was not friendly at all. But I reminded myself, our party of 6 is here for the food, so we all ordered and I was quickly reminded of why we have stopped coming here. The friend who initiated coming here, had ordered nachos. Her order came out completely wrong and had to be sent back TWICE before she finally said forget it....being that the last time the nachos came out they were burnt. My rice was inedible. It tasted completely of nothing but garlic and was very dry. My friend used to work at Venturas and was completely disappointed at how they have gone downhill so badly. My sons enchiladas came out burnt on top with very little cheese. The margs are small and expensive. We had to constantly flag down our waitress and each time she approached; looked like she had an attitude. We finally decided it was best to just chalk it up to a learning lesson.....do not come back when there is definitely better restaurants in surrounding area. What can you say about Ventura's that can't also be said about Taco Bell? Precious little, other than Taco Bell doesn't use Velveeta on their enchiladas. They serve drinks! Which is nice I suppose, you can get drunk enough to not care that the food all tastes like it came out of cans sometime last week. Their menu is large and confusing, their service is slow (though very friendly) and their salsa is some form of chunky ketchup. We love Ventura's Mexican Restaurant! We have never had a bad meal or bad service there. The wait staff is always very quick to greet us at our table as soon as we are seated. The margaritas are delicious, made with fresh ingredients ( not powdered pre mix like a lot of chain Mexican restaurant). The chicken wings(which are large and meaty) are so good that we usually take an order home with us after our meal for late night snack! If this is your first visit, I highly recommend the Cajun chicken Nachos and Mexi skins filled with Fresh chorizo! The wait staff are always very attentive and fun! My sister passed away from breast cancer and Ventura's was her favorite restaurant and she requested her meal of mercy be held there. We honored her request and Ventura's were very accommodating on short notice. There were around 70 people in attendance and everyone ordered off of a special menu they created for us at my request. They did an excellent job and everyone was served quickly with drinks and warm appetizers and meals. They did an outstanding job. Have grown up in Toledo, I'm no stranger to awful Mexican food. I was (thankfully) spared the pleasure of dining at Ventura's until last night. I honestly don't know what to say. Ventura's is one of the worst restaurants I've ever visited. The burritos were hard tortillas topped with melted Kraft singles. The salsa was primarily ketchup-based. The margaritas, while admittedly strong, tasted like acetone. Everything was completely unappetizing. Bottom line: save your money and go to Taco Bell. read more

If you like to drink so much you don't know what your food tastes like, what you ordered, or how long it takes before your food is served then this is the place for you. The wait staff is partial to yoga pants like they all just came off the bus from Walmart although I'm 99.9% sure not a single one A. can touch their toes or B. has ever seen the inside of a yoga studio. If that isn't enough a woman came out of the kitchen carrying a catheter bag and headed into the bathroom which was about 3 feet from our table. I got a good look and so did my wife. It was a clear sturdy plastic bag with protrusions for filling and emptying and full of yellow liquid the exact color of urine. I can't imagine what else she would be carrying into the restroom although I also cannot imagine to whom the bag belonged and why on earth they thought it was appropriate to change a catheter in the kitchen. My wife and I have a small child and rarely have a night out for just the two of us. I literally think it's been a couple years. To say our evening was disappointing is an gross understatement. The wait to be seated at 6:30 was twice the 15 minute time they quoted but it's Saturday and busy so not big deal. I'm a big guy and hadn't eaten lunch so I brought my appetite. When we finally sat down and the waitress finally showed up we ordered straight away. I asked for the fajitas. She asked if I wanted the large or small. I should have known something was wrong. I have never heard of small or large Fajitas so I, being a hungry fat man asked for the large. Beef Fajitas. I repeated. Beef Fajitas. Again. My wife said loudly across the table: you can always box up what you don't eat and take home for later. About 30 minutes later as the crowd was growing thin she shows up with a tortilla. A tortilla. A single tortilla on a salad plate covered in a giant wad of white cheese with 1 1/2 pieces of "Fajita meat" sticking out. I was confused. Reality turned sideways. I'm sorry I said, is this the beef fajitas? "It's the Fajita pizza" she says proudly. Fajita pizza. Seriously. Like I'm a six year old who has to be tricked into eating Fajitas by making it look like a pizza. I'm a 260 lb man. Who serves a tortilla on a salad plate to a 260 lb man as dinner? That was the final straw. We paid for my wife's entree and put it in a to-go box so I could find something to eat before I lost my patience. The waitress boxed up the "pizza" at no charge. When we got home I picked out a piece of the "fajita" meat and tried it. I'm not sure what dog tastes like but I imagine it must be close. Before you read my review of Ventura's, I urge you to read every other review about Ventura's on this site and then ask yourself this question: How can so many people love the place and how can so many hate it? Well, I've been coming here over 30 years and I can tell you the answer has nothing to do with the food-beverages-service...all of which have remained remarkably consistent over the years. Do you consider yourself a connoisseur of good food, Mexican or otherwise? I know I'm not...and I've never met anyone who is. I only know what I like...which is the same as everyone else who posts here. So, here's the deal...where do you normally like to eat Mexican food? If the answer is a corporate-chain type restaurant (e.g. Don Pablo's...Abuelo's...Chipotle...you get the idea) then save your time & money and DON"T BOTHER with Ventura's. Those of us who do patronize Ventura's will thank you for leaving a table or a seat at the bar open for us. On the other hand, if you do choose to give Ventura's a try remember this: you're free to hate the place just like so many people do. But if you decide you LOVE the place, you'll never be able to enjoy the corporate-chain type Mexican restaurant again. Are the salsa and chips homemade? I don't know...but seriously, how could they be? They go thru so much of the stuff. Do you like small, strong margaritas? If yes-you'll love these. If no-you'll hate them. How is the food? Usually good, sometimes great...never terrible. Service? Better in the early afternoon, but after 5:00 all bets are off. Bad weather = very busy. Good weather = maybe not quite as busy.
