Very limited space downstairs and the stair steps looked rather short, so we opted to sit at the bar. Ordered the Fresa Margarita $13; Grilled Blue Point Oysters appetizer $18 (Qty 4); and Tostada De Atun $20 (Qty 4).. The ceviche was very acidic but fresh and tasted great. I would prefer if the onions, cucumbers, and avocados were cut into smaller pieces so that it is easier to eat. I've had this place in my list for quite some time. It's not too far from our home and it's always been a great "backup option". Well I was finally able to try it and wow. What a place. They have a very cute and intimate downstairs bar, but they have more seating for larger parties upstairs. I sat upstairs with my toddler daughter (great for families) and we're close tot hr bathroom area. I ordered a Pima cocktail and whew- that chipotle agave ice cube sure did pack a good pinch of spicy flavor (in a good way) I then ordered the shrimp ceviche and the *****see menu photo**** My daughter loves the ceviche but called it sour and she lived the cheese part of the ******. Our server was amazing and so attentive to my daughter which is always so nice when going out. We will be coming back and soon. read more

So maybe I'm late to the game, but here I am adding another FIVE STAR review to Deseo Modern Mexican's list of 5 star reviews. DRINKS: If (in Toledo) I'm going to pay 13 bucks for a drink, it better taste FANTASTIC and/or knock me on my ass. The drinks at DMM did both. Actually, I didn't get knocked on my butt, but I did catch a really cool buzz and totally enjoyed the Mango Mezcal and the El Deseo. My wife, tried the Pina Margarita and the watermelon Marg. She was amazed by both and admitted that both were worth the calories. "All" are made with fresh ingredients and good booze. There is beer (including Corona Premier...excellent waterbeer) and wine. The food is amazing and worth every calorie (and every penny). Mexican fare with a modern twist? Yeah, just like the name says. The combination of flavors and (especially) textures is amazing. I wouldn't call it tapas style, but with the number of small plates and tacos available, you could easily do tapas if you wanted. Fresh high quality ingredients, in conjunction with creative and well executed recipes makes for an excellent dining experience. Service: Friendly, accurate, and surprisingly fast. Location and Atmosphere: I like it. I've always been a sucker for Cricket West. Inside, it's modern, clean, and comfortable. Located in a former upscale strip mall. The main part of the restaurant is up a flight of steep stairs. It's upscale food but it just misses the mark. There were no flavors that I am craving to return for. The tacos were filled with a huge lump of coagulated cheese and the shell was falling apart in my hands and almost impossible to eat. The app that I ordered said queso but it was actually the same cheese served with veggies on top. The chipotle sauce was bland, mild and forgettably flavorless. Our server offered no explanations or suggestions about the menu. The highlight of my meal was the Spicy Strawberry Margarita. Maybe the best I have EVER had. I ordered 4 tacos with no sides, one app and two margaritas; the bill was almost $100 with the tip. I'll be back for that Margarita though. read more

My dad and I had our first dining experience at Deseo Modern Mexican this evening and although we didn't know what to expect as I come from a Mexican family and have also traveled throughout Spain, we both decided it was 10/10 amazing! We ordered the Verduras Tacos (added shrimp), Cazuela with vegetables, and Papas Bravas to share. Even though they say tapas it was more than what we could finish with the caveat that neither of us eat giant portions anyway. For our drinks, dad ordered a refreshing limeade (not too sweet or too tart) and I had the Horchata. The Horchata was good but next time I would get the limeade for something less sweet and more hydrating on a hot day. Shoutout to our server Glenn who surprised us with a piece of cake before we left. I appreciate that he checked in on us and was quick to answer any of our questions about the food. Disclaimer: the stairs are a bit steep which I could see some folks having a hard time with and the tables are close to your neighbors. I personally think it made it feel like more of an authentic experience but know some people have melt downs about that sort of thing. We are ending our 60th grade school reunion weekend with a bang! After a very filling brunch at Rick's City Diner and traveling around Toledo to see various childhood memory landmarks, we thought we should end the day with a light meal. To get the taste of Carmel's out of our mouths (sorry Carmel's) we decided to try this Mexican restaurant. Interestingly it is not too far from where we are staying, so quite convenient. We arrived pretty early, a bit before 5:00 pm. Obviously we were seated immediately in their upstairs dining area. Asia was our server, and she gave us some guidance on the menu. I ordered a margarita and my wife ordered a Modelo Negri. Both were very good. There was a special burrata peach salad, which my wife ordered plus four shrimp tacos. I ordered the scallops. All of the dishes were excellent. My wife even let me eat a couple of her shrimp tacos. Excellent. As we were eating more people arrived. So obviously a good place to eat on a Sunday evening. We very much enjoyed the food, the service and the locale. Very comfortable place to dine with more than adequate parking. We will remember this place the next time we visit Toledo. read more

The owner awesome.. even the people you meet in there having a nice cocktail after work are also awesomely amazing... The ambiance and the energy is as equally warm and in inviting. Based on the reviews, I was excited to give this place a try. The layout is a bit odd, a bar downstairs and one large table or you. Can hike the stairs to the second floor which has an odd assortment of tables incredibly close together. If I was rating just the margarita it would be 5 stars. Unfortunately, the food is pricey and a miss. Neither dish we ordered I would want to return for. The cheese in both the tacos and the dip was one partially melted blob. My brother and I met our cousin and her boyfriend in Toledo since it was halfway for us. They had some great cocktail choice and all the drinks are made with fresh fruit and agave as their simple sugar. I had a Mexican old fashion made with Anjo Tequilla, brown sugar cubes, Aztec chocolate bitters it was delicious. For my meal I had the Papas Bravas with sausage. Beautiful presentation and delicious. I would drive there again for another meal and cocktails. I would recommend making reservations because the place is limited to seating. The only down fall is the main dinning is upstairs but there is limited sitting on the lower level. I would recommend this place if you want something different. read more

3.5 stars. I sometimes really wish Yelp would incorporate half stars. Food is good and stylish. Authentic, which is most important. Ambiance is good. Owner has a great personality and seemed knowledgeable in what he was saying and doing. Cocktails were actually great. Server was friendly and the service was good, too. So what's wrong? It's just that I couldn't justify the pricing. It's too expensive for what I get. It's a tapas place, but every dish was closer to $20. Maybe I'm the only one who hasn't adjusted to the new inflation prices yet, but the fact remains I could get many of what they serve elsewhere for almost half the price. I guess if I sit back to think a little bit about it, I could see/understand that some people would be okay paying the "premium" prices for the experience, as long as the food was "elevated." This one is tough for me, because I really like the food. But I can't justify paying $5 for a taco birria, or a tiny 2" piece of tuna tostada. Delicious!!! If you are in the Toledo area, call and book your reservation today! This was the most enjoyable dining experience I have had in years. Deseo makes fine dining Mexican cuisine accessible to everyone. We started with a special appetizer, the Queso Frío. It was a cold queso with feta, pico and jicama, toast and cucumber dippers. Ah-mazing! So unique and totally delicious. We next shared the Chicken Tinga Tostadas and Arroz Verde. The tostadas would be excellent for a meal choose as well. The chicken was tender and flavorful with fresh toppings to add a crisp texture. The Arroz Verde, poblano rice, was unique. It's not rice with poblano in it, it's more like rice soaked with a poblano soup. Creative and delicious! We had two kids with us, one got the chicken tenders with fresh cut fries and the other opted for the steak quesadilla, steak in the side, with fruit. The steak was flavorful skirt steak and the fruit was watermelon, pineapple and pomegranates. The kids meals are big, tasty and affordable. Lastly, we did two taco orders to share, the pulpo and chicken taquitos. I've never had pulpo, octopus, and I originally wasn't going to try it, but I did! The octopus was tender, thank goodness, and there was some heat and church with the fresh toppings. The Flautas were the bomb! Crunchy, crispy, fresh, packed with sabor (flavor)! It would be so easy to work your way through the menu at Deseo. Another thought about their food...The toppings are so plentiful, they almost provide another meal. Get chips so you can scoop up everything in your plate! We have two drinks, the Spicy Serrano margarita and the Watermelon Margarita. Both we delicious! These are not you typical margs made with a mix, everyone is freshly muddled and assembled. Yum! In terms of the atmosphere...It is bustling! The waitstaff is constantly moving. The servers are up and down the steps running the food out as it's ready. This is a unique trait of Deseo, once any part of the order is up, it is run to the table hot and fresh. At least one of the owners, Luis or Krystyn make their way to every table. They treat their customers like friends and family, and it is obvious they already have a group of regulars. First, this place is loud and cramped. Everything here echoes, and it's hard to hear anything you want to hear. Seating is mostly right on top of other customers, and that not only adds to the loudness, but you feel like you're a part of your neighbors dining experience. You also will likely end up getting seated upstairs where most of the seating is located, and it's a steep stairway. Because I was so close to the other diners, I could see most staff were pleasant and nice. My waitress, however, was bordering on rude. Maybe she was having a bad day, but she certainly acted like she wanted to be anywhere but there. My pastor tacos tasted OK for the most part, but it was clear from how fast the food came out (within minutes) and how chewy and overcooked most of the pork was that the pork had been sitting around in a tray for a long time. I seemed to get this terrible meat in two of the four tacos. And the tacos were pretty tiny, too, in my opinion. And it says on the website "ask about our local craft beer selection," and there is none. When I asked I got sort of scolded for even asking. I would have liked to make a second visit before reviewing, but I won't be back. read more

Everyone on hand is there because they're passionate. Not just with regards to the food, but they believe in what they're doing and warmly welcoming in the opportunity to share that passion with everyone who walks through the door. But you're here for the food, aren't you? And, let's be real, the drinks. The crema de chile poblano is warm and smokey with a perfectly balanced spice profile. The quesabirria is miles beyond any version of it you've ever had before. The arroz verde is an absolutely perfect side that can bring you back again and again by its own merit. You literally cannot go wrong. And, as for the drinks, the Jamaican is a bright, lovely take on pomegranate that will complement just about anything you get, but even the house margarita, with its muddled limes and balanced sweetness is better than most top shelves you'll find anywhere else. What you really want to try though, is Luis's tamarind-mezcal sour (I'm strongly advocating they name this one after the restaurant!) - you've never had anything like it, and I have no intention of ruining the surprise with words.
