Small and very down to earth family owned winery! Ventimiglia Winery is off the beaten trail in Wantage, NJ. Place isn't fancy, but is an all no-nonsense good winery! We met the Anthony V. son of the owner. Anthony was very welcoming like you're a member of the family in his home. Sampling list consisted of $5.00 for tasting 5 wines or $10.00 for everything! Must say, we enjoyed about every wine! The winery has a tasting room. Of course, the tastings took place outdoors at picnic tables due to Covid. The winery follows all covid standards along with hard sanitizers all around. Anyway, we came home with 3 wonderful wines: 1. Buon Giorno- Dry White 2. Carignane- Medium Red 3. I wasn't so impressed with this Vineyard. Very small area, really no Vineyard to walk through. We went on Sat afternoon and there were quite a few people there. Just sitting at tables waiting. Only one person was doing the wine. They only allowed 3 groups at a time into the tent which was understandable. The host was very nice.. think his name was Anthony. Only tried the red wines. Great little local winery and vineyard. Our volunteer sever was great. Beautiful grounds to have a picnic and trails to walk. We were here on a rainy day but the tasting is under a tent so crisis averted. The wines were diverse in grapes and flavor profile. The prices were great and they prefer cash but accept cards. Visiting the winery is like visiting a dear friends house, because Gene is so gracious. His knowledge of wine making is impressive, and he is clearly passionate about wine making and his wines. As one reviewer noted very often when I have visited wineries in Ca, NY, or Az, there are one or two wines that really make me say... WOW... . This is just not the case with Ventimigilia wines, each one is distinct, and well balanced. it is very hard for me to visit the winery and not come home with a case of wine. I have had many Cabernet franc wines from NJ and have never found one I liked, but His Cabernet Franc is outstanding, Medium body with some light fruit and just enough tannins to make it a pleasure to drink,. If you like an old school full bodied blend then the Fratelli blend is for you, with cab fran, cab sav, and merlot. Now i like whites but am often disappointed with NJ whites, either they are really sweet or have no body. This is not the case with gene's whites, his chardonnay is the perfect summer white, nice medium body, not overwhelming oak and just enough brightness to make you take notice. We optted for the 5 since we had plans for another stop today. Enjoyed all 5. Prices range from $13 to $37. Loved the history behind the Carignane. Almost all grapes are New Jersey grown. Ventimiglia is as good as it gets. A lovely small vineyard tucked away in Sussex County NJ making small batches of fine wine using traditional methods. This winery has top quality wines, that far exceed most other wineries in the area. I live in south Jersey and will happily make the trip to this winery simply because it produces some of the best wine I have ever had. We took a Saturday afternoon break to drive the countryside and try out this neighborhood family winery. On our list were Buon Giono, Wantage White, Reisling, High Point White, Carignane (Grandpa's favorite) and Merlot. All were on the dry side , even the High Point White which was their semi-sweet wine. The Merlot was my favorite. The winery tasting room is rustic and small, great for an afternoon drive. They seemed so happy just describing their wine and they seemed to have a story for each wine. Poorly run operation. Told wait would be 10-15 minutes. Only one person working. And he was bouncing all over. Took about 35 minutes. When we mildly complained, he told us rudely of we didn't like it we could leave. He'd pore a tiny couple of drops in a tiny plastic cup, then take a phone call or a FedEx pkg, or wait on others, etc. Worse winery/wine tasting experience in my life. If you can run out nicely, pleasantly and smoothly, you should get out of this business. Or at least get someone else to work there to help. It's not our fault you are overwhelmed. If you do not like any of Ventimiglia wines then there is something wrong with you. All of the wines are well balanced, aged to perfection and just marvelous. All their wines are of a dry style all of which were good. But what was exceptional was the 09 Cabernet franc and the 2010 merlot. Tasting room if you call it that is small this is definently not the place for a large group. Pourer was a local farmer that the winery buys grapes from he was knowledgable about the growing process and grape but not so much about the wine making process. read more

Cannot say enough good things about Gene and his phenomenal small batch wines. As most reviews have pointed out, these wines are not traditional NJ fare (overly fruity & sweet). Though even their take on a sweet wine (High Point White) still had a nice balance and finish. My wife and I love the quality of taste, especially after they get a chance to breathe. Personal favorites are the deep, red Chambourcin, Cabernet Franc, and the smooth white Vidal. If you make the trip to the winery and want to make a day out of it, the town of Milford, PA is also close by. read more

Gene is the BEST!!!! I love going here on Sundays when he is there. My favorite wine is the Merlot, full bodied, well balanced and enough sulfures so they don't make your taste buds tingle. Their Riesling is one of the best I've had (yes, I've been to Napa)! I usually bring cheese and crackers and fruits and sit outside with a bottle. Bring blue cheese to try with his wine. Found Gene and his wine at the Montclair farmers market. I bought two bottles and wish I picked up more. Gene is great. He's really funny and welcoming. He let me try a bunch of different wines. His Carignane, or his "sexy wine" as he called it, was my favorite. I also bought the high point white which is lovely for summer. I really like supporting local businesses, especially ones where the owner is present and friendly. Gene won me over. The thing I loved most about Ventimiglia is that they let the wine speak for itself. If you are looking for wine themed gifts or spoken word poetry performances...look elsewhere. But if it's quality, Napa-rivaling wine you are after, look no further! I'm pretty certain every other NJ winery makes fruit wine...blueberry and apple are usual suspects. While these are easy to drink and fun, they are not wine in the purest sense. Ventimiglia, not unlike Homie the clown, don't play that. All of their wines are traditional grape, and with only a few exceptions quite dry. Lucky for me I like my wine dark and dry so I was in vino heaven. My favorite was the Merlot. Although it is a bit pricey, it's worth every penny. Further proving that people who drink wine are better people, the ones that operate the tasting room are delightful. Their passion for the craft is palpable. For $5 one can taste all of what they have to offer. Bottles run around $25 I'd say with the most expensive being $45 for Merlot. But it is money and time well spent! read more
